does jay-z's new song "death of auto-tune" mark the actual death of auto-tune?

I just heard this on the radio.. I had no idea it was Jay-Z, but I agreed with everything he said.

billstevejim, Monday, 8 June 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

trends die because they're replaced by newer trends, not because of backlash

that said, this coulda been dope if the beat, vocals and/or lyrics reflected the aggression of the concept like, at all

Jayz probably not the ideal person to be making pronouncements on what's hot and what's not

i didn't hear it as "these kids today" as much as i heard "commercialization is wack" .. sorry i forgot this is ilm and no one will ever agree that the current trends are wrong.

T-Pain's "Karaoke" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this song

although both have the same problem of being too soft and ultimately going "kanye's my buddy, though, he can keep doing it" and not really taking aim at even the much easier targets

Yeah ILM is wall to wall pie-eyed poptimists eh? You're probly right tho, multi-millionaire businessman Jay-Z is probably decrying commercialism here.

and yes i picked up on the irony that kanye, whose last album was entirely leaning on auto-tune as a crutch, helped produce blueprint 3..

autogucci cru (deej), Monday, 8 June 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

haven't heard anything else from blueprint 3 yet, but regarding kanye..

he seems like the type of dude who's big-headed enough to think his last album is the end-all of autotune.. as if he took it to a level of artistic greatness that will remain unmatched, and that any future usage of this in hiphop production will only be used to appease pop audiences, and not hiphop listeners. .. i wouldn't be surprised if he's finished with it altogether.

billstevejim, Monday, 8 June 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah...most of his last dozen or so guest appearances have been w/o autotune, he's probably gonna leave it alone on the next album he does

I think everyone here is underestimating the weight of this song. Check any hip-hop news site and it's practically the only thing anyone has been talking about since Friday night- with a overwhelmingly positive response (honestly, people have been complaining about autotune for so long, it's a surprise that it took this long for someone to actually build a song around the theme). At this rate, DOA could end up being the hip hop equivalent of Smells Like Teen Spirit, in the sense that it so totally destroys the trend of the moment that no one will ever be able to use autotune ever again. Look for hip hop to get darker and less pop-oriented (on the whole) by the end of the year.

dude...you're overthinking some shit but i dont see how a rapper who most people agree has been off his game for a good half decade can come back with a wack "statement track" and expect to change the course of the genre. there's still plenty of paper to be made using autotune so it's not going anywhere

just as "disco sucks" did more to change fashion than halt the rise of programmed dance beats, there will be plenty of auto-tune on tracks but it's possible/hopeful fewer rappers will go Full Troutman after this.

x-post I think Jay-z has been past-prime from the Blueprint on, but his last album went double platinum at a time when few rappers can make that claim. he just signed that ginormous LiveNation deal, and it's hard to imagine anyone would turn down a cameo. To be all "whatever he's washed up" like it's Ice-T vs. Soulja Boy is pretty absurd.

the point is that they're a pretty big example of rappers using autotune to keep their careers alive - pray IV reign might've sold 25,000 copies if it didn't catch buzz off of "pop champagne"

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

if U2 made fun of Coldplay's Les Mis outfits or the Killers mustaches you can bet Coldplay and the killers wouldn't be wearing them much longer. The response wouldn't be "aw muthafucka you just ain't ready for the stache nation" because its a frivolous aspect of their shtick. jay-z's track isn't The Killing Shot In The War On Autotune, just an established figure of respect saying that a fashion should pass, which does mean more than when a blogger says it, even if people are going to continue and making heavily produced candyass pop songs.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

The point isn't that summer jam appearances can change the direction of music, but that the song made T-Pain nervous enough to make an awkward public plea for Jay's pardon. And in the end, that's what's going to kill autotune as a gimmick. It won't be ringtone consumers asking for it to go away, it'll be singers and rappers being too embarrassed to use it again because they don't want to look like they're on the losing team.

yeah, croupier, but yr analogy hinges on U2's influence on, like, ~coldplay~ and ~the killers~. they might be able to get them to stop dressing like pirates, but i guarantee it wouldn't mean anything to all of the hipster dudes i see with mustaches and antique suspenders or whatever

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

while it is possible that the hipster autotuners will continue to make sexy robot tracks willy nilly, when someone respected says something is embarrassing it is not unprecedented for it to have an effect.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

"Green Light" was kind of the opposite of a 2008 autotune track.

Eazy, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

debating whether or not this track is a hearty smack-down or a pitiful stab at relevance is sort of a waste of time, imo. if anything, it's just him realizing that this shit will pass ~anyway~ and capitalizing on the chance to make it seem like he had something to do with it

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

Of course autotune will die and be replaced by something else, that's the story of every fad since the beginning of pop music. I think this is particularly interesting though, because Jay's song might actually have a tangible effect on the course of pop/hip-hop music in 2009. Sure, songs that are already hits might still remain hits, but from here on out, it's hard to imagine anyone getting in the recording booth and requesting the autotune effect without a conversation about this song taking place.

makeitpop, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

Let me put it this way, I don't think T-Pain's next single will feature autotune, and I think it will be a direct result of this song.

makeitpop, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:24 (sixteen years ago)

You could've put anyone else's name in that space and it might be true, but T-Pain will always use autotune and noone will ever tell him to stop because he's just way better at it than everyone who's done it in his wake.

Hasn't T-Pain already said he wants to record less with autotune?

I still resent that Jay didn't provide other rappers the precedent of truly retiring on top, but if he's going to keep making shit he might as well give it a news hook like this rather than record "I'm Still Hova" or something. The only reason I'd have any beef with this track outside of the standard qualms with later Jay-Z is if LL Cool J was planning to drop some autotune love jams and now he won't. But god, let a rapper talk trash!

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:32 (sixteen years ago)

T-Pain rapped w/o autotune for years when he wasn't famous, and still does occasionally and for the most part people either don't like it as much as the autotune stuff, or don't even notice that he dropped it for a second.

the daily fail (some dude), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

Autotune was definitely reaching the end of it's cycle anyway, but I have a hard time believing that anyone is going to go out of their way to use it after this. I don't care who uncool you think Jay is, he still carries more clout than almost any other rapper out, in terms of sales and overall influence. And does Best I Ever Had really use autotune an an effect? If so, it seems pretty subtle (and it's irrelevant anyway, since it was recorded and released before DOA dropped).

"Rock is dead" or "hiphop is dead" are not really saying the same thing as this.. Auto-tune is merely an element used in dance music, and not a broad genre category.

OK there's a nice R&B lope to begin with, almost stumbling into action. I quite like such vulnerability in a chart song. The female vocals which open the track are a bit phoned-in, but I am willing to overlook them because the guitar loop has a really quite startling, vibrato tone. It's almost shoegazey. It works, again, pretty nicely. The song is vulnerable. It's in a minor key and the backing whoops and hollers sound more like yelps of pain. There's a looped sample that sounds like a dog being kicked. All the while, a loping, downtempo beat allows our man to rap slowly, deliberately, and really sound the syllables with feeling, like each one hurts him.

More focus on the lyrics this time round. One thing I hadn't noticed is that the kicked-dog sample actually begins the song and persists more or less throughout. Strings from everywhere? It's like she's imagining some sort of giant weepy violin concerto. Unless she's singing "Strains". Lots of non-understanding. Things are fucked up and she doesn't know why. Jay-Z will tell her. He's tryina get back. Something about stacks. Life's an unfair game, and she breaks the rules. Oh wait, she's like his choral conscience. Righto, as you were. Some wailing. We are...C-saw? Chainsaw? Fractured, brutal imagery. Millionaires. I'm not really a hip-hop lyric expert, but the musical levels are building and busting adeptly. They understand the night, and the night is cruel. "Next time I'm in church, please no photo"...Jay is beset with the trappings of fame even when trying to connecting to something spiritual. It is a husk, his life, bereft of substance. Shoes without shoestrings. He wears his slippers everywhere these days. Near the end, a slightly more muscular bassline emerges briefly to give the song some short-lived and quickly-strangled direction. It's like a sort of false build. Very effective. An oscillating vocal sample, like the kicked-dog but more expressive, spirals into the distance. A harrowing ride. A grim depiction of life at its cruellest, no doubt. Aided by a soup of audio vulnerability and strangulated production.

country matters, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

hipster brünoff (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 24 July 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

The Game's own account suggests that he saw vulnerability in Jay-Z's over-extension. First, supposedly Jay-Z got Chris Brown blackballed from the BET Video Awards by threatening to stay home if he performed. Second, D.O.A., the first single off of Blueprint 3, attacked a whole generation of rappers using the Autotune program to sing (including such great powers as Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West as well as the hapless T-Pain). Taken together, that might add up to a growing resentment which could be exploited. Maybe he calculated that now was the moment to strike, and that the rest of the middle powers will ally with him to topple the tyrant.

oh come one. first of all, the radio means nothing. second of all thats like saying "A Millie" blew up because a bunch of rappers jumpe don it. Souja Boy "Turn My Swag On" is an undeniable classic and only associated with one person. mr tellem

ok, those two songs have nothing to do withe ach other. "turn" is a game changer because of its sound, structure not cuz it feaured a sample from a hip artists some A&R suggested and a handful of popular rapper

P.O.L.O. (Posters Only Lol Once) (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Sunday, 26 July 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

I assumed when we were talking about a radio hit that at least some of its assumed significance was derived from radio play. Anyway the song was out for about 4 months before anyone who didn't own the album seemed to know it existed.

soulja boy antebellum (some dude), Sunday, 26 July 2009 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

Someone should do a roundup of all those bLOLg posts from May wondering if this year's "summer jam" was gonna be Micuchu and the Shapes or Drake or Das Rascist or Gaga, when in reality it was a Soulja Boy song released in January.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 26 July 2009 03:28 (sixteen years ago)

some dude, not to throw a wrench in your arguement, but I didn't even know a Wayne remix existed of swag o_O

no one associates 'swag' w/ lil wayne, everyone knows its an sb record

butthurt (deej), Sunday, 26 July 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

the high profile remixes were due to the song being huge, not the other way around!!!

butthurt (deej), Sunday, 26 July 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

"swag" is "a Millie" level impact imo...this song and everything jay z is pushing for is hapless and rather pathetic in light of those two songs

P.O.L.O. (Posters Only Lol Once) (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Sunday, 26 July 2009 04:04 (sixteen years ago)

There is no room for rap outside of "A Milli" and "Swag"

ttepmalc deej (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 26 July 2009 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

You know, surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, it's not that Jay-Z actually runs the rap game it's that he has the swagger an attitude of someone who runs the rap game.

Do you get mad and scream "THAT'S NOT TRUE" when Diamond Dallas Page said he was better than Stone COld or whatever?

ttepmalc deej (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 26 July 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

Like calling someone a played out has-been loser because they're not as famous/popular/iconic as Soulja Boy is an argument that even a 13-year-old would tell you is short-sighted

ttepmalc deej (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 26 July 2009 04:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i remember you noticing "swag" catching on before me, but that was still months and months after it'd been out. it's not like i was screaming "IT'S A FLOP" Jordan-style a week after it was out.

yeah it's really sad the way he's chasing kanye now instead of vice versa -- anyway i don't think anyone's arguing much with you saying that jay is way over the hill, just the idea that "turn my swag on" had anything to do with him becoming any more irrelevant than he already was

a Jay-Z song titled "Guns 'N Roses" featuring Lenny Kravitz with a beat produced by Heavy D that samples Cake was one of the few true culture clash headfucks in a decade full of false alarms. also it wasn't that bad as a song.

some dude, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

i'm just sayin the blueprint had one guest and one sound wasn't that what made it so unique in his catalog and such a great album. these two seem like they may have more in common with each other than with the first one. and with Kingdom Come too

Waka Flocka Neuname (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

if DOA was a new Takeover-like kickoff to a new album with that consistent sound and a lot of NO ID and Kanye productions it would be pretty cool. this seems kinda suspect. that being said I'm listening to American Gangster right now and trying to stop being so negative about the guy

Waka Flocka Neuname (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i mean, they talked a big game about taking all the AutoTune off the album and making the production aggressive, but even if they follow up on that and just happen to have a bunch of indie rock hooks and tight jeans rappers on those beats it could still be pretty lame. i'm glad to not see "Jockin' Jay-Z," "Swagga Like Us," "History" or "Brooklyn (Go Hard)" on the tracklist if only so i don't ever have to think about intentionally listening to those songs ever again.

some dude, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

never been real into the "protest ballot" thing but i kinda wanna make my Pazz & Jop singles list all-AutoTune. probably gonna be at least 50% anyway.

Sure, songs that are already hits might still remain hits, but from here on out, it's hard to imagine anyone getting in the recording booth and requesting the autotune effect without a conversation about this song taking place.

I think it's a joke.

Bear in mind, this thread was started before the release of Attack Attack's "Stick Stickly," which was essentially the Smells Like Teen Spirit of auto-tune usage.
