DAS RACIST and the annual indie fuxxor electronic novelty hit

sorry if this is too @hipsterrunoff or whatev, but...

So like every year we're pretty much gonna get one electronic novelty hit that crosses over to bloggos as hot jam/reference/joke/meme because it's a catchy beat with someone saying something dumb/silly/filthy/wacky over and over and over and over and over again.

How do we feel about DAS RACIST? What can you add to this list?

1997: DJ Assault - "Ass 'N Titties"

2001: Detroit Grand Poobahs - "Sandwiches"

2007: dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip - "Thou Shalt Always Kill"

at least it isn't a taco bell / long john silver's. those are the worst.

das racist is like "lazy sunday '09"

us_odd_bunny_lady (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

i think this song is dope + funny

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

i was gonna say - if this was a 'digital short' it would be canonized w/ "lazy sunday" and "dick in a box"

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

Pizza Hut is changing their name, so this shit is gonna be a relic by next year

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:25 (fifteen years ago)

i think these things were definitely annual at some point, but around 2007 they became monthly. and will probably be weekly by the end of '09.

some dude, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

lotsa blogs missed the boat with the original "pizza hut/taco bell" so they're furiously trying to pass off like 20 remixes as "superior" versions. wtf internet.

Man, Funk Dat

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

it sounds like the same song anyway tbh

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:33 (fifteen years ago)

no doubt Sagat was a novelty hit but i dunno doesn't seem indie fuxxor enough for this thread. shit got played on MTV and rap stations.

some dude, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

for all i know Sagat still lives in Baltimore, btw, it's one of my on-again-off-again goals to track him down for an interview one of these days.

some dude, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

xpost
yeah, but alternageeks at the time quasi-irono-referenced it in the same way, so I think it applies, even if only as a forebear

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:38 (fifteen years ago)

indie fuxxors were a different breed in 1994

some of the greatest artists ever are bland (los blue jeans), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but i dunno..i heard "lucas with the lid off" and "cantaloop" on alt-rock stations at the time, not so much "funk dat," so it feels like somehow of a different breed.

some dude, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:40 (fifteen years ago)

this is not about radio play, it's about embracing a novelty electronic song in a slightly ironic wacky way, which applies to both Doc Martin hipsters in 94 re sagat and keffiyah kidz in 09 re wacky fast food song

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:42 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know if you're 15 or something like the rest of the autogoon cru or whatever, but flannel dudes at my school were def doing the "maaaan... funk dat" thing for about 6 weeks.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

what about "genie in a bottle" + "hard to explain" - certainly that was "a novelty electronic song" that was embraced in a "slightly ironic wacky way"

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

xpost: yes. to me that's what makes it fit this mold better. it was referencing the "other".

some of the greatest artists ever are bland (los blue jeans), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

i dont think anyone irl outside of ppl who live in brooklyn know about "combination pizza hut and taco bell" - people are still shouting "I'M ON A BOAT" tbh

I don't remember anyone embracing genie in a bottle, but I wasn't hanging around too many ironical dudes at the time

some of the greatest artists ever are bland (los blue jeans), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

1st ironical embrace of genie I can remember is the strokes mashup

i dont think anyone irl outside of ppl who live in brooklyn know about "combination pizza hut and taco bell" - people are still shouting "I'M ON A BOAT" tbh

i'd love to be all BUT PEOPLE IN KANSAS CAN READ BLAWGZ, but you're probably right. consider this thread a prediction of pizza song's oncoming cult status.

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:49 (fifteen years ago)

internet people def know about this esp since it got reviewed on pitchfork but if people at your college were going around referencing "funk dat" for 6 months i can guarantee that people at my college are not sending me texts that say "i'm at the pizza hut!!" and we went to comparable colleges size/city wise

I think maybe I wouldn't have to go on screaming rampages about my shitty job prospects at Twitter conferences if I spent more time looking for work and less time having 2 a.m. chat sessions with people that used to watch Eureeka's Castle.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:53 (fifteen years ago)

tbh the annual indie fuxxor electornic novelty hit of 09 is that 3OH!3 song

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:53 (fifteen years ago)

3OH3 is mainstream fuxxor iirc

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

i mean people who are going to women/men/boys/girls warehouse shows probably aren't fucking with 3OH!3 but people who are vampire weekend/decemberists/broken social scene "mainstream" indie fuck with that song as far as i can tell

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

i thought only Bamboozle Fest Fall Out Bros with the big text T-shirts listened to that shit, and no one who actually listened to, like, any indie band that stereogum would cover

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

I've been meaning to make a shipley-style Idolator post where I categorize the 30 types of hipster so we stop just calling all these disparate groups "hipsters"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 21 June 2009 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

im basing that post on small anecdotal evidence but it's not thaaaaat far of a bridge from "discovering" justice to "liking" a 30H!3 song if you listen to stereogum bands

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

im sure lots of it is "this pop song is so bad it's good!!" or whatever but still

swag serf (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 June 2009 06:02 (fifteen years ago)

I was under the impression that 3ought!3 is more of a nu-hot topic band. Like maybe there are some people that like them and justice and vampire collective or whatever but they are just the people that list a bunch of new bands + Johnie Cash (sic) on their social profiles.

some of the greatest artists ever are bland (los blue jeans), Sunday, 21 June 2009 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

this is not about radio play, it's about embracing a novelty electronic song in a slightly ironic wacky way, which applies to both Doc Martin hipsters in 94 re sagat and keffiyah kidz in 09 re wacky fast food song

I think you are overthinking this man - it's more about "there have always been novelty records and people dig a good novelty record every now and then" & moreover the pop charts have pretty much vaccinated themselves against good novelty records so if you're gonna enjoy a nice stupid summer novelty jam it's gonna have to come from homemade style stuff

IOW it doesn't really have much to do with hipsters except that they're the ones making the novelty records. if Rick Dees wants to get off his ass and write a good sequel to "Disco Duck," everybody'll throw down for that too for for the time being it's people who claim Brooklyn comin w/insightful wry observations about the intersections of commercial culture & personal interaction

look for my presentation on this in Seattle this year

fyi i'm maybe 2 years younger than you, and i do remember kids in middle school quoting "Funk Dat" but i think it was more from it being on Beavis & Butthead than that they were indie kids and it was an 'electronic' hit (is hip house really electronic music? i have no idea)

Pizza Hut has recently expanded its menu beyond pizza to include pasta, giving it some reason to alter its branding. Media and advertising trade publication MediaWeek characterized the name change as an attempt to transform its stores into hip hangouts.

lazy sounding rapping is very much in character here. and the "lazy/stoner" vibe is betrayed by the density of wordplay and references (it's the pavement reunion of rap!) i dig it.

The other day I was thinking how, besides the Beastie Boys touchstone, there's also early Scritti Politti's critical theory and alienation effects.

I wonder how bands like this would've been appreciated ten years ago, or before the Internet Runs Your Life era. Would they just have a cult following like Ween?

If nothing else they epitomize the way hipsterism and nerdiness has been blurred in the last few years.

it's complicated. i mean, i think it will become more of a thing in the coming day or two. but it's hard for places actual news sites to run a story like this based of just a tumblr post. maybe someone will get an interview with the girl or something that would help solidify things a bit.

which of course isn't to say that the accusation isn't legitimate... but it's a tricky area when you're talking about covering it on a wide scale

i think we know why they were assholes to some dude though:

It was rad and he spent a bunch of time making fun of me for coming to his show alone and then some dude rushes up to us and is being super annoying asking for Dap’s autograph and just generally being terrible until Dap just puts a hand up and goes,

“Dude. Can’t you see I’m busy? I don’t know if you’ve met my wife. But this is Gwen. My wife. My WIFE okay?? So I’d appreciate it if I could have some time alone with her.”

I really enjoyed DR's music but it's been pretty clear for the last couple years that they weren't enjoying what they were doing together. I don't remember the last time I saw a band get as jaded as quickly as these guys have

I will miss their brand of hip-hop, though. I know a lot of people dismiss them but I always found them refreshing. my ears are probably broken though

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 May 2025 16:06 (one month ago)

looking up "hotel room service" to see if it fits this thread but i don't think it does because pitbull is way too popular. i was blissfully unaware that his 2009 album is called "Pitbull Starring in Rebelution" and that on the cover is Pitbull in a tux with a prominent soul patch next to a woman in a camo bodysuit. wiki tells me he was another florida rags-to-riches story like rob thomas - there must be something in the wang state that bestows gloriously loud careers on talented and very lucky reprobates. i hope i live to read a pitbull biography, although i see that mr. worldwide is only a year (!) older than me. biography.com tells me that he took the nom de plume "pitbull" because they are "too stupid to lose." i hope that he's actually kind of like that and that we aren't going to get any sex pest allegations and he turns into a beloved philanthropist or something.
