hmmmmmmmmm so many choices - i feel like im totally drained of thoughts about this album. i guess i would choose "right side of my brain" or maybe "love vs money" - "mr yeah" has crazy things going on and i always forget how amazing the outro is. "kelly's 12 play" is maybe lyrically the best song of dream's career. "fancy" is like a monument basically, and the transition to the rap verse is one of my favorite parts of the album. "put it down" and "sweat it out" are amazing - esp the way "sweat it out" starts so exultantly, but those are two songs where i look back on l/h and go "yeah 'falsetto' and 'purple kisses' and 'luv songs' are better" and the singles are great songs but probably my three least favorite songs on the album except for maybe "my love" but i played that one out. i don't think i loooove "take u home 2 my mama" texturally, it's kind of trebly and flat and though i certainly do love it as i do all songs on this album, i wouldn't consider it for the title of best song even despite HER TITTIES LIKE WOOOHOOOOOHH. "love vs money 2" is great in tandem with "love vs money" but i think the first song is better and could stand alone whereas "love vs money 2" is a great song that works best as a transition between "love vs money" and "fancy". i did not consider voting for "let me see the booty"

i will choose amongst "fancy"/"right side"/"mr yeah"/"kellys 12 play" and then regret my choice

For me it's "Fancy" or "Right Side" but I basically endorse Jordan's handwringing above.

Tim F, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:39 (fifteen years ago)

'fancy'. it's v much a default answer, much like 'deeper & deeper' is always my answer to "what's your favourite madonna song", b/c it could so easily be anything else at any given time, but there it is. it's the lynchpin of the album for sure.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

yeah basically agree w/ jordan as well -- thats absolutely the heart of the album

voted kelly's 12play for fun

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:46 (fifteen years ago)

This video is actually what convinced me to get the album. Something about all of the fun he clearly had recording "Put It Down."

but it's between "rockin that shit" and "fancy", and i'll prob vote "fancy"

nadroj thing (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

put it down or right side of the brain is my initial thought. take you home through fancy is almost too much of a suite for me to pick one. i did finally learn the other day that fancy is mindfuckingly amazing on headphones but (and i mean this in the best way possible) it's almost too much song. i think if i were to just put on one track from this album it would be right side.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

only joints i did not consider voting 4 were 'my love', '12-play, & 'booty'. think the best song is prob 'fancy' but i voted 'mr. yeah'

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Great album all around. I voted for the title track as it's received the most plays from me.

FANCY

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

right side of my brain sticks in my head the most, but honestly my favorite moment of the album is the segue between take you home to my mama -> love vs. money

cutty, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

joeks. i dunno i haven't even listened to this LP much but drifted along pleasantly and then the final track just stood out sounding hazier, more lucid and generally elsewhere and i always dig that

oh i probably just listened to it in the wrong order (doin this now and then without realising i've left shuffle button on - what a disaster for artists original intentions)

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

you are a disaster. the album flows effortlessly from one song to the next and you are listening in shuffle mode.

cutty, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

imo "Take You Home" or "Sweat It Out" or "Mr. Yeah" could've been big radio hits in the vein of his first album's singles, they really fucked up by playing up the songs w/ big guest stars

some dude's dead new wave singer sister (some dude), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

kanye's verse seriously makes me want to strangle someone

yeah they should just make albums one complete track so this terrible catastrophe never occurs

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

^def agree about "take you home" and "mr yeah" (the latter especially) being prime singles choices, though i do love "rockin that shit" and "my love" too. "sweat it out" might be a bit dense/layered for radio, and its tempo might not be ideal for summer jam candidacy

xp cutty holy shit i forgot "walkin on the moon" is a single :( not a bad song but it's got to be the worst on the album

nadroj thing (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

that (^) was to some dude's post

nadroj thing (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

"walking on the moon" i've decided isn't that bad but it's one of those weird songs where the verse and pre-chorus melodies are killer and then the chorus is just totally dead weight.

"sweat it out" would/could be the album's big quiet storm legacy song imo

oh i prob meant to post this somewhere but the-dream agrees with what rev said somewhere else about 'take u home 2 my mama' secretly being a country song.

'walkin on the moon' is a fine track, i really like that the first third of the album consists of exquisitely executed generic radio jams w/glittering star cameos, kanye and mariah just doing what they do - lays the groundwork nicely for the album's lurch into WHOA blowing my mind territory. i even love the first half of kanye's verse - "i swear god must've made lightning strike and bottled it up, it hit the red carpet and modelled it up" is so great. pity he totally undoes it all immediately with "after i pound you" ughhhhh.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

i think the one i turn to most if i just want to her one song rather than the whole album is 'mr yeah'

lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

lol...i actually think the supposed (but will probably never happen) kanye/dream joint album could be dope, if kanye brings tricky/los into his production team. imo the-dream vox >>>> kanye autotune

pretty epic build & release on that one.

loooooooool this is so otm - this continuously puzzles me and i always think to myself "you know what im not going to even bother looking up the lyrics"

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

as for "fancy", like everyone says it's such a great slow-burner of a song that it gets to the point where merely the addition of the drums ups the drama of the album immensely - also "fancy" is so integral because it really is like dream is building up this great love life of jet setting and fucking in gucci stores and then he totally tears it down with "right side of my brain" - the two songs are really important to each other. and then "mr yeah" is like "fuck it!! girls are awesome im the best at fucking!!!" and then "mr yeah" ends the album in his bedroom <3

aaaaanyway im gonna vote for "right side of my brain" for the build up in the last 40 seconds or so where the drums pick up

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

i agree that he's a retard for not releasing "sweat it out" or "put it down" but idk about "mr yeah" - it's definitely a great summer pop song but i think it might remind too many people of "touch my body" to really be a huge success

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

one of my favorite parts on the whole album is right at the beginning of "right side of my brain" when his voice is suuuuper autotuned and he goes "fell in love with a real heartbreaker/ and there's nothing i can dooo, to shake her" - part gets stuck in my head all the time

i just listened again and this part is so incredible - it's right around 50 seconds - def the most impassioned vocal performance of dream's career, if that even means anything

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

he does put some serious emotion into that song that makes it pretty next level.

unlucky son (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

"right side" has grown on me in a big way -- never did listen to the demo of it that people on here used to talk about, is it really that different or essential to hear?

conansformers 2: revenge of the fallon (some dude), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

i uploaded the "right side of my brain" demo - it's pretty great in it's own right but it's amazing to listen to it knowing how elaborate and intense of a song it turned into

http://www.zshare.net/audio/61814107850f30ed/

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

haha i started to upload before i saw your post btw

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

idk if it's "essential" it just has a different tone - it's more somber and less cathartic, there aren't those huge drums, just these sad piano chords and the beat boxing

s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

ah yeah and then it just FALLS into the aiiiaaiiiiaiiii bits and it's so physical, real heart-into-stomach stuff - the dramatic fall, just after 'fancy's ascended into the clouds

lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

oh i prob meant to post this somewhere but the-dream agrees with what rev said somewhere else about 'take u home 2 my mama' secretly being a country song.

yeah this didn't make it into the piece but he was basically bragging about how he could make any style of song, and he said "i could even do a country song, hell i already done a country song" - i was like ".....take u home 2 my mama???" and he said yeah.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

im more interested in hearing your objections to it! i mean musically like i said the build-> release is kinda flawless & real cinematic, the way the accordion comes in at one pt, the imagery about making love at the end of the world over the swooping strings during the rap section, the way the drums hammer in at its peak ... all kinda amazing

unless yr objection is conceptual, about money buying love or whatever

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

which is kind of contradicted by the rest of the record -- i guess out of context its a pretty superficial track but its emotions feel very genuine, and are later undercut by the reality of 'right side of your brain'

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

i guess it sounds like a lot of effort put into something sort of empty to me? like, the story he tells is well-told and it sounds pretty, but the story itself leaves me kind of cold? i guess that's kind of conceptual, yeah.

i would vote for take you home to my mama maybe. i like the first album better, i have to admit.

i think part of what really interests me about it is how much effort there is in something like that ... its such a strongly felt idea for something that seems pretty aberrant to me personally & i start thinking about the state of ppl's attachment to consumption & status & shit & how strongly it is tied to their emotional well-being -- pretty weird i guess but it feels so honest here & its about someone who came from 'nothing,' which sort of increases the emotional impact ... i dunno i just like it a lot

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

yeah. by the time the song gets around to being first-person i like it more. i don't know, i think its artfulness just pulls me away from it for some reason. i find the sentiment itself moving in other contexts, in a song like "All Falls Down," for example. i guess i just don't find the woman who gets material goods out of relationships archetype a relatable story? obviously he's pretty invested in it.

its 'conceptual' in that "they say you can't buy love, they lyin" is something that the narrator feels at that moment but i dont think the-dream = the narrator, per se

one of my favorite parts on the whole album is right at the beginning of "right side of my brain" when his voice is suuuuper autotuned and he goes "fell in love with a real heartbreaker/ and there's nothing i can dooo, to shake her" - part gets stuck in my head all the time

weird idea, i guess it's good that they're committed to still pushing the album even though sales haven't been huge -- enough room on the disc that they could add 4 or 5 new songs

400k in 3 months, not bad but nothing special, still 150k behind the first album.

curvy argentinian mistress (some dude), Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

I don't listen to this album outside of "RSoM/Mr. Yeah" anymore. Going with "Mr. Yeah" mainly because of the chorus and the outro. Can't decide if the bridge is just dead weight, or needed in order to contrast with that brilliant outro, which I think is 1. the best 10 seconds of The-Dream ever and 2. a metonym for The-Dream's style

The 400 LOLs (dyao), Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Right side", easy. otm about the intro being great. this track embodies everything I like about dream.

I considered "My Love" for a while - it was my favourite track on the album when it came out, but I feel like I played it out pretty quick. It really needs one more verse or something. It feels strangely lacking somehow.

agreed, but going back and listening to it again, it actually is really incredible. the last minute especially, from "right side of my brain" through the woah-oh-oh's has so many neat little layered sounds that all contribute alot.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 29 June 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

These poll results are screwed. "Walking on the Moon" has got to be the bottom of the album, but it's second on this poll? How did "Put It Down" only get two votes?

nothinbutcuts, Monday, 29 June 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

Heh, I voted for Walking On The Moon because I thought nobody else was going to, and it cheerfully reminds me 50s generic happy modern machine music/Joe Meek stuff I've been listening to a lot this year. I totally blank the Kanye verse tho.

etc, Monday, 29 June 2009 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

I have to admit, I voted for "Walkin On The Moon". On an album full of great tracks, it's the one I keep coming back to. I like the spongy synths, and I LOVE Kanye's verse. I also think it also has the sweetest reverie and the most beautiful chord change on the album, in "I'd pull down a cloud for you/I'd circle the stars and bring you one back...".

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2009 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a sucker for those kind've fizzy strings - DJed this into Metro Area's "Miura" at a party to pretty great effect.

yay for "right side". but the best thing on the album might actually be the transition from the end of "fancy" to the end of the intro of "right side" (basically, when the beat starts).
I also love how dream harmonizes with himself throughout "right side", going higher every time.

Finally came around to "Fancy" this week, after playing it a bunch on speakers instead of headphones. Agree with Jordan above about the drums and build and release and all that, but think my favorite part is about a minute before the end, when Terius joins in with the c&s'd vocal track that keeps on popping in and out; the wild, jittery way in which he goes "a-t-a-t a-t-L!" is awesome.

I've been into "walking on the moon" a lot lately. mainly because of its great and clean production (the beat is huge and although there are a lot of synths and stuffs going on, there's a lot of space, somehow) and the "I'll pull down the clouds" part which lovely. Kanye is annoying, though.

dyao, Saturday, 10 October 2009 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

that song is one of the oddest of his career imo - like i said upthread, it always immediately strikes me as aurally unappealing, really thin & flat & compressed. but it has some really great lyrics, my thing about terius being great at club sloganeering fleshed out over a whole song. plus the 'titties like woooHOOOOOH' part which is arguably the high point of his career and the keyboard whistles that punctuate throughout. it's a song with so many gifts that presents itself as so ordinary imo. i always have to remind myself how much i love it.

it takes a nation of 51 to hold us back (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 10 October 2009 06:32 (fifteen years ago)

good summation; I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of its thinness, which applies to a lot of the album in general - probably the reason why I only really listen to Fancy through Mr. Yeah, and prefer LvH over this one.

dyao, Saturday, 10 October 2009 06:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's weird, like, "love vs money" and "love vs money pt 2", i think these are two of his best songs across either album, but sonically they're not "plain" but they are definitely less involved than a ton of the productions on the album. now, i think they work as this two part apocalyptic & hectic mini suite but i'm still taken aback sometimes at how abrasive and simple they are. but, i totally love & buy into them so i totally buy into the mood that tricky & terius were going for

Other great things about "Take U Home 2 My Mama":

  • His awesome twang
  • The way he slides into falsetto on the line "I'm makin' my way through the mother-*fuckin club*"
  • The "OH SHAWTY DO THAT AGAIN" chant
  • "I'm like...damn/ My niggas like *DAMN*"
  • Another great slide into falsetto (he does kinda excel at knowing exactly when to do this) "Shawty look good/ Shawty look fly/ She said we could leave after one more dance/ I said *Take your time*"

And again, with the caveat that The-Dream needs no approval from P4K whatsoever, I'm sort of baffled that Rockin' That Shit is the consensus pick from the album? I mean, unless a second Terius joint is popping up in the Top 50 but that seems unlikely.

It might be the strongest single, I guess, but the brilliance of LvM is all in the deep cuts. And by "in the deep cuts", I mean "Fancy".

popular singles artist being praised for his most popular single of the year shocker

some dude, Monday, 14 December 2009 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

But he's not a popular singles artist exactly...I don't think I heard him on the radio once all year. For someone so high-profile in terms of writing credits, I usually have to explain who he is to people.

Wikipedia says Rockin' That Shit got to 22, so I suppose it's in the realm of actually popular, as opposed to Ryan Leslie or whatever, but if that's his highest peaking single, I think it's disingenuous to act as though radio-airplay and singles are how The-Dream's work's been consumed, especially in critical circles, especially given the acclaim for the album as a whole.

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 14 December 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

"rockin that shit" is both the best song and the biggest single, so it was a good pick

k3vin k., Monday, 14 December 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

But he's not a popular singles artist exactly...I don't think I heard him on the radio once all year. For someone so high-profile in terms of writing credits, I usually have to explain who he is to people.

Wikipedia says Rockin' That Shit got to 22, so I suppose it's in the realm of actually popular, as opposed to Ryan Leslie or whatever, but if that's his highest peaking single, I think it's disingenuous to act as though radio-airplay and singles are how The-Dream's work's been consumed, especially in critical circles, especially given the acclaim for the album as a whole.

you're being weird, dude. "Rockin'" got to #2 on the R&B chart (and was his 4th consecutive top 10 solo single on that chart), and was one of the biggest songs of the year on a lot of stations I listen to, still hear it on an almost daily basis 10 months or whatever after it's been released.

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 14 December 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

Probably worth noting that you can't really put "Fancy" or "Right Side Of My Brain" or either of the "Love vs Money" tracks on a mix-tape, for example (owing to the way they're mixed as a suite), so it's a lot harder to enjoy them in isolation. "Rockin' That Shit" feels more standalone, hence makes sense to talk about it as one of the tracks of the year. "Fancy" is more about the greatness of the album, or perhaps more specifically the greatness of its "side 2".

yeah but year end lists that are voted on by a staff of dozens of people are more likely to represent what all or most of those people have heard, like say a huge hit single, rather than a deep cut from its parent album that may not even score especially high on its album lists

best-dream single this year was "my love" easily

lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

but yeah i don't get why a) if you loved the singles you wouldn't check out the album b) if you'd heard the album why you wouldn't choose "fancy" as the track to pick - def seems that that's the one that opinion's coalesced around

also didn't "rockin' that shit" come out way before 2008 ended?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess Lex has elucidated my point in a far more logical and clear way. And if it were Rolling Stone, or something, I wouldn't be shocked with the big single placing, but the way Pitchfork's poll has always SEEMED to operate, especially with regards to albums/songs/genres outside of its "indie" centre has been via individual writers repping hard for albums/tracks and converting other writers who don't specialize in those genres. Similar to how I'm more likely to hear and thus rep for funky tracks favoured by Lex or Tim or others who have an in depth knowledge of UK Funky (even if they aren't the big hits). Or how I'm more likely to give the time of day to Gucci tracks that deej or j0rdan suggest.

Given that the people contributing to the P4K lists are, like us, a bunch of obscurantist music nerds. And given (not a HUGE assumption) that many P4K contributors wouldn't have given Terius or Electrik Red or whoever the time of day without SOMEONE strongly advocating for it, the end result being "Rockin' That Shit" seemed counter to my perception of the response to the album by the critical bandwagon. (I mean, it's not like they voted for Walkin' on the Moon, but nonetheless...)

And again, I think it's clear that my assumptions are way off. Scott P. said something in another thread about how deej's nomination of a second Gucci track split votes and led to Wasted being lower down the list (possibly because most non-specialists aren't/weren't willing to throw on two Gucci tracks in their top 25/50/whatever). So it's possible that something like that happened - a vote split between the big single and an album track that a Terius-fan on staff nominated, or maybe some dude is 100% right, and my ignorance of the various Billboard charts led me to have totally faulty expectations.

Anyway, my stupidity has resulted in a big kerfuffle over nothing, so let's just move on, shall we?

b) if you'd heard the album why you wouldn't choose "fancy" as the track to pick - def seems that that's the one that opinion's coalesced around

not to put down "fancy," but as great as it is, like are you really saying this six-minute long dream pop ballad near the end of an rn'b album is the obvious choice for a bunch of mostly indie-minded critics?

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, yeah. Given that the values that tend to be favoured by indie-minded critics tend to be experimentation, arrangement, non-standard song structure, etc. etc. 'Fancy' is exactly the song I would recommend to indie-minded critics in an attempt to sell them on The-Dream. Not run-of-the-mill R&B - but ambitious, musically intricate and starkly different from most things out there.

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

It the song that (on its own) most effectively lets you stake the claim for The-Dream as musical innovator. Ideally I'd throw on the self-referential song-suite that is Side B, but in a pinch, "Fancy" would probably do. It's worked, too.

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

("Indie-minded critic" is a category I include myself in, tbh.)

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

that should be true, but uh is there any precedent for that happening with pop and rn'b? electing a deep cut from a pop album rather than the single, i mean.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

"fancy" isn't necessarily what i'd have picked to win over critics when i first heard LvM, but empirical evidence suggests it's the one that seems to have worked...

as great as "rockin' that shit" is, it's not the kind of standalone single that screams "pick me!" to non-r&b oriented critics.

i agree with this b/c 1) who cares about what kinds of critics like what kinds stuff and 2) when you make up traxx lists you shouldnt be thinking "hmm okay so i need a track from [this album i love], which one on this album should it be?" it should be obvious to you; i prob won't have a dream or e red song in my top 20 but if i do it'll be "rockin that shit" because that's the one i play the most, both in and out of album context, not because i think it sums up the album or whatever

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

same kind of "which album summed up the decade" dumb writerly/narrative shit ppl always fall into, mad annoying

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

I think the fact that 90% of "Fancy" is a gentle R&B ballad would actually play against it being the "indie" pick. I think it's more the kind of track that tends to wow people who listen to a fair amount of R&B already.

Tim F, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

it codes as a "different" sort of ballad though - the kind of consciously ambitious thing which might well appeal to non-r&b ears (the ballads that get dismissed are much more ostensibly generic, not to say melismatic, than "fancy" is at any point)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

the part you guys are missing is that there's prolly no R&B album, even a critic/indie-friendly one like The-Dream, that PF would put a deep cut from on their tracks list. it's not like their Beyonce picks or w/e aren't singles too. even w/ rap albums it might be a Clipse or Lil Wayne deep cut but everything else is singles.

anyway i REALLY object to the idea that "Fancy" is universally agreed upon as the best song from this album, since again it didn't win this poll, and it's not even in the top half for me.

some dude, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

'rockin that shit' is dope & imo looking for 'fancy' would be like me expecting, i dunno, 'my shadow' to be gucci's token critic pick this year -- an excellent choice (in fact i was debating whether or not to vote 'fancy' as a single & decided not to bcuz i was voting for the album & that gave me another spot for other singles) but one that wasnt likely to get much support outside of the album's superfans

keep in mind that even w/ kells, most indie fans just new 'ignition' & werent really listening to chocolate factory

unicorn strapped with a unabomb (deej), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

well said, and it's worth noting that p4k, for example, employs maybe 2 "superfans" of dream so expecting a deep cut is kinda unreasonable. but w/ something like animal collective or whatever, they've got like 20 die hard fans writing for that site, which is why there'll prob be 3 mpp songs in the top 10

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

x-post
^^^ I think I failed to push The-Dream tracks as tracks for the same reason. This always happens with the Pitchfork list - I end up not voting for tracks where I loved the album, and then when i vote on the short list suddenly I'm putting those tracks in at like No .2, No. 3 spots.

Tim F, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

tbh this is why I don't really like the "tracks" thing and always make singles lists, for P&J or whatever -- a straight list of my favorite songs of the year would be so redundant with my albums list and would feature so many tracks by the same people over and over that I'd rather just stick to singles as a medium in and of itself.

some dude, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

nah, by representational I meant that, you know with pitchfork they want a list that shows off the full extent of their aesthetic, their ecectecism and weird wildcards that show how they can look outside their standard field of focus to find things that complement or offset their musical landscape

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 07:13 (fifteen years ago)

I suspect you're drawing a bit of a bow from pitchfork's historical love of remixes - but the thing with remixes is that, esp. for the period 2004-2006, when it came to dance music non-dance fans were much more likely to be into remixes of things than they were to be into original dance music tracks.

Pitchfork has never particularly celebrated R&B or hip hop non-singles in its end of year polls - non-single rap tracks that did well have almost always been radio hits at the very least.
