So is this going to be a more rap-centric record? I guess you couldn't necessarily judge Love/Hate from "Ditch That", but it's not as if that was the first thing we heard from that record.

I like this alot. It's the kind of thing that would sound absolutely epic in a club what with those pounding drums and the chorus is really droney and strangely hypnotic. I have no problem with The Dream's more carnal jams like this and "Let Me See The Booty."

so as much as i love the big the-dream thread, it's pretty damn big at this point & tons of the initial posting about love vs money is waaaaaaay deep in there, so i think an album specific thread is warranted -- not in the least bit because his profile is pretty big on ilm

according to twitter, terius is currently playing the album for the staff of the fader -- at this point in the lvm process, i think three or four songs had already leaked out ('my love' & the 'right side' demo iirc, as well as 'let me see the booty' & 'rockin that shit'), so we should be seeing some new stuff soon

I've been trying to avoid as much exposure to leaks from this one as possible so I don't spoil the record, but so far everything I've heard has been pure bliss. "Love King" is in strong rotation on our local urban station, and it holds up to all the exposure, while a couple of those T.I. tracks have also been getting semi-regular spins, and they sound fantastic, too (especially "Love Again," which is so much richer and more lavish than pretty much anything else the radio is playing right now).

If Terius can balance this radio-fodder with a some darker, more cerebral moments and maybe a few thematic twists like he did on LvM, this could be another hands-down album of the year for me. But even if he doesn't, I don't think I'll complain. This is going to sound fantastic in my car all summer.

yeah good point, considering how that song makes up roughly 40-50% of the album

"walking on the moon" def in the bottom 3 of that album but it's not a throwaway or anything, good production and the bridge is one of his best

6 times, apparently. I think the bit before Kanye's verse and then again at the end is my favorite little snatch of melody he's come up with. I like the song a lot and kinda wish he would do more uptempo stuff in general, as good as his slow jams are.

I can't listen to music right now, but I love the buzzy but still kind of lilting synths on the original. Not sure what you are talking about by "the over-synchronicity of the vocals/beat", tho. The vocals rhythms in the verse are syncopated way against the straightforward beat.

Also, I love the way everything goes into bullet-time during the pre-chorus. And also, the bridge is like the sweetest melody there is.

wotm's rythmic tightness, which i think is part of what you're describing, is part of why i like it so much. it's like disco rn'b.

I would think of it as one of his most "muscular" songs really, after "Ditch That".

ehh I give him credit for trying but if anything those two tracks really reveal his deficiencies as a singer - not only does he have a limited vocal range but he also has limited emoting abilities. he's at his best when he's letting the production & music speak for him. I just listened to the two again and damn if I didn't feel embarrassed for him, going "when loooooove is the problem / nothing can solve it" just came across as so false & contrived.

This is the worst kind of music crit fallback line. I could take nearly 100% of the full-length albums on my shelf, remove my less enjoyed songs, then say it "makes a better EP" -- but that's not the point. Albums are meant for stretching out, covering a greater stylistic range, taking more risks and detours... to knock any album down to EP length really misses the point, I think.

Also, this whole album's great. One of those albums where my favorite and least-favorite songs totally switch up every time I play it through. One spin I may be really feeling "Sweat It Out" or "Walkin'" -- then the next spin I'm onto something else. But really, they are all great songs.

Yup.

I just heard the album from start to finish for the first time. It is fantastic, well worth braving the abhorrent PlayMPE format for. It's a much smoother listen than Love vs. Money, with much less turbulence, and many more conventional slow jams, especially in the album's second half.

"F.I.L.A." does not feature T.I., but the song holds up well without him. A lot of the overt Prince homages from Love/Hate are back, but I think they sound much better here. Closer "Florida University" is the album's most conventional pop song; very perky and simple and Akon-esque. For me it breaks the spell a bit, but maybe that's why it's sequenced last.

"February Love" is the song that will most likely top future ILX polls; it may even out-fancy "Fancy." Six minutes of Bacharachian balladry that gives way to nervy, defensive raps.

Some diehards may be disappointed by the lack of complete curve balls and gut punches here, but there are still plenty of smaller twists and surprises, and to my ears Dream has done a fantastic job refining and distilling his sound down to what works best. I think the album is pretty much perfect.

Feather-light and breezy.... "She want me to reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-mix this...." Very R. Kelly, more of a sequel than a remix.

I think it's safe to say this is The-Dream's prettiest album; almost every track goes down very, very easy, without the grit and noise that Love Vs. Money sometimes threw in your face. But the songs are still emotionally bruising.

One of the most striking is a track called "Abyss," which is sort of a sequel to "Love vs. Money Pt. 2." The song keeps its cool, but the chorus is cold-blooded:

"Cry 'til you drown your face/ Bitch, I could give a damn how harsh this may seem/ But I'm here to put your heart in its place/ Chained up at the bottom of the lake."

I have access to a (kind of clumsy) stream that was sent out yesterday—which actually isn't much of a heads up, considering how soon the record drops—so I'm excited to start reading some more reviews in the coming days. I think there were some (mostly indie-leaning) media outlets that were a little slow to catch on to Love vs. Money that might try to right the wrong by jumping on this one. I hope so, at least.

Nikki Pt. 2 is much brighter musically than the first Nikki, though it's still an F-you song, and it transitions into the much longer (and much, much more brutal) "Abyss." It pays off really nicely, though some might be put off by how closely it mirrors the Love vs. Money suite on the last album. He can definitely be accused of repeating himself here.

What primarily separates this album from the last one, though, is tone. This is a much lighter, more agreeable album, with less clutter and more instant payoffs. That might mean some fans are less passionate about it, since it's not as challenging, and probably not as much of a grower, but I can live with that. It's pure ear candy, and the song writing still punches me in the gut.

"Abyss" is similar, but probably not as dark. The album as a whole is a lot lighter musically. I'm in the same boat, though; "Love vs. Money Part 2" was the song that most blew my mind on the last record; I would have loved to hear an album as tortured and out there. But as a summer pop record, Love King is pretty unimpeachable.

"february love" is kind of dragging...

it's no "fancy" that's for sure

everything up until "nikki pt 2" is really reminiscent of l/h & from "abyss" on you get more of the lvm style songs

yeah otm, and unsurprisingly i like the first half A LOT more

"veteran" is really good -- it's actually maybe his most r. kelly sounding song

"turnt out" is def on the l/h side tho i think

the sequencing there from "panties to the side" -> "turnt out" is pretty much a direct reference to "ditch that" -> "luv songs"

only none of those songs are as good as their l/h equivalents :(

I'm listening to this for the first time. Exciting. Love how this thread is like a return of the thread for the third Basement Jaxx album (which I guess this album is kinda equivalent of in terms of r'ship between artist and ILX at this point in time).

I can see the link between "Yamaha" and "Fast Car" (Prince obv) but they feel very different to me. "Fast Car" is a brilliant pop song. "Yamaha" is barely in a song, but in the best way, it's just gaseous delirium.

A week after I first heard it, I'm still really impressed with this album. I don't think there's a single dud on the record—even "Panties to the Side," which begged me to hate it at first, reveals a wonderful hook.

I don't think I'll cherish the album as much as LvM, because I don't think it's nearly as deep or as revelatory—there's nothing as unprecedentedly dark here, and its best songs don't quite reach the heights of a "Right Side of My Brain" or "Mr. Yeah"—but I think taken for what it is, this is about as close to a perfect summer pop album as we've seen in a long time.

Yamaha is dominating my brain/life at the moment. Wish he let out his Prince side more on the solo albums - a lot of Electrik Red's LP was very indebted to this sort of thing, but he does it so WELL.

Thus far Side A >> Side B. LvM was a clear Side B >> Side A. L/H is still the only one that seems balanced to me (Mama aside). After three listens, Panties to the Side and February Love are still waiting to grow on me, but everything else is damn good.

I came around to February love once I accepted the fact that it's Fancy minus the big pay-off (both the rap and 'right side of my brain') and evaluated it on its own merits

How long is this album? It's taking forever to download.

"Yamaha" is terrific but it's like two minutes too long. My heart sank a little when I noticed the average song length is 4:02.

Dream songs are all about how they indulgently stretch and unfold tho. I have no idea why you'd want them to be shorter; you'd lose most of the good stuff.

He did just fine on the first album.

I said it on the other thread, I think -- I'd a problem with Dream turning every production into AN EPIC STATEMENT ABOUT LOVE AND BETRAYAL with the same bag of production hanky panky.

Not even a majority of his songs are epic statements of blah blah blah (maybe about seven or eight between his 3 albums? "Yamaha" certainly doesn't fit that description) and his bag of tricks is varied enough that it isn't a problem.

I wrote this before:

One thing that strikes me about the [The-Dream's songs] is the pure generosity at work. Most second verses have completely different melodies from the first. Most tracks are overflowing with ideas, with sprawling, extended structures that keep on tacking on new parts. The songs are never long just to be long, they keep hitting you with new melodies, new lyrics, new sounds for their entire durations. Sometimes it gets a bit messy, but there's always a point to it.

"Sorry" makes a much better closer than "Florida University". Gettin' Shai vibes up in here. :)

I think his songwriting qua songwriting is at its weakest here - so the enjoyment is pretty much all about the generosity/"overload" effect, especially on the stretch from "F.I.L.A." through "Abyss", which is basically one long song and probably the smoothest attempt at a "suite" he's managed so far. When he tries to do simpler stuff here it's not bad but you can feel that he's done stronger versions of the same thing before.

I think "Abyss" is interesting in this regard because songwise and sonically it's like a slight return of the original "Nikki" and both parts of "Love vs Money" - less memorable a song than those and also less startling sonically. But the depth of it, the layering and the (again) generosity of the arrangement is kinda peerless - that's where he's pushing himself on this album I think.

i don't really have any thoughts on this album yet - i'm loving the feel of it though, being able to sink into it luxuriously, but "nikki part two" and "take care of me" are the only songs i'm really obsessing over so far. (nb i already adore "sex intelligent".)

the transition from "love king" to "makeup bag" is so hilarious and playful. i really like the initial run of songs, before the tone changes to more srs mid section, perfect mix of that combination of boldness and goofball strut he does so well.

yeah i've really come around to "fila" -- "sex intelligent" has great tension and a v dope beat & he does the r. kelly ploy really well

i think i'd agree: the sheer sound is so thick, rich, overwhelming, even more so than before - some of these synths and drums and layered vocals are slaying me
