Pancakes are one of my favorite ways to party. (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

xp. I wouldn't go that far but i can see something kind of cool in it in that it's all the bands on a label and assorted acts that they would be in in one festival, so really quite a specific demographic yet still really huge. Also the activities are pretty interesting for a festival and I'm sure if you were a juggalo it would be totally awesome. I don't really fit into such a specific subculture in anyway and even if I did I don't really expect there would anything like this for it. So, I suppose while it's completely lame it's also, I dunno, nice? Good for them I suppose?

De Mysteriis Dom Passantino (jim), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

I had to go to a horrible free dental clinic because I don't have insurance and there were a couple of Juggalos up in that bitch with me. They didn't know each other beforehand, but recognized each other because one had an ICP jersey and necklace, the other had tat with that psycho with a butcher knife logo. They greeted each other warmly and proceeded to discuss sick ass Twisted shows, one dude's crazy azz Juggalo homie getting high off rotted orange peels in jail, and the skank azz ho that stole the other dude's Juggalo gear, leaving him "feeling naked." Another highlight was when they had some unimpressed black hip hop dudes listen to Twisted mp3s on their phones.

ok I started watching this for the lols but by the end I grew some fucking balls and now I'm really excited about it! Probably the turning point was midget wrestling on thumbtacks. And there's a lot of sex in the air, don't doubt it. Actually, now it sounds like I'm sneering, but I'm trying not to; I was born in Illinois and lived in Indiana recently for six years, and this culture seems to be as authentically rust belt as can be. I actually want to start going on about post-racial bullshit watching this but I'll spare you.

maybe we could pool some cash and get an ilxor to attend and provide updates? I bet this would be a really good time.

At any rate maybe we can get Sugar Slam to start posting here.

la saucisse est une femme? (Euler), Wednesday, 22 July 2009 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

So is this where the ilm reevaluation starts? First this thread, then we'll get a Defend the Indefensible where a couple key ilxors profess a grudging love for several early ICP tracks. Then comes the POO and album poll threads. And pretty soon Insane Clown Posse is all like Steely Dan or some shit.

Can I sleep in my car?
If you are so inclined you may sleep in your car. If you would like to park your car on the campgrounds you must have at least a car pass (no pass is needed for the parking lot). YOU MAY NOT SLEEP IN YOUR CAR WITH THE WINDOWS ROLLED UP. There is simply too much danger of dehydration, suffocation and heatstroke to allow sleeping in cars with closed windows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faygo

Faygo is often talked about by the Detroit hip hop group Insane Clown Posse, who reference Faygo in several of their songs. Positive audience reaction to an early concert performance in which Violent J threw an open bottle at a row of hecklers resulted in the group continuing to spray their audiences with the drink. However, the group is not acknowledged by the company. According to Bruce, "We wish they would do a limited edition Faygo pop run with us. Maybe one day, when they get a new CEO, they might change their way of thinking. But whoever's in charge now wants to steer clear of Insane Clown Posse. They consider themselves a family product. I guess they don't make it to throw at each other."

What Is a Juggalo: A Function Alternative to Religion
Ashley R. Davis (Mark Rubinfeld), Westminster College
Oral Session A3, Converse B18

This senior thesis discusses the identity and faith of Juggalos, who are the followers of a
band called Insane Clown Posse. Providing an overview of Insane Clown Posse, I will look
at how a Juggalo’s way of life and belief system has many similarities to that of alternative
religions through their community bond. I intend to discuss the phenomenon of the
Juggalo in order to educate readers about the life of a Juggalo, the community that is
created by them, and to discuss the importance of this particular group of contemporary
youth and the social movement they have created for themselves. This will entail looking
at theories of Gemeinschaft, Sense of Community theory, and alternative religions. To
collect the information, I will be combining ethnographic research and secondary analysis.
What I expect to find is a relationship between Juggalo identity and faith as it pertains to
their sense of community and how it could be argued that they have formed their own
alternative religion. Finally, I anticipate explaining why the Juggalo community shouldn’t
be referenced in a negative way.

I'm so utterly fascinated by all this - I worked in Detroit in the late 90's and used to see them around there and Ann Arbor and thought it was so bizarre. Everyone totally hated Juggalos. It's still weird for me to see them regularly in small rednecky western towns, obsessed with the cheap ass pop we used to have when I was a kid.

I would seriously love to get all made up and go to the gathering undercover just to see it all first hand, kind of like how I'd love to wear a hawaiian shirt and straw hat to go to a Jimmy Buffett show. Objectively it would probably be horrible but it would be amazing and strange at the same time.

. ICP's Sunday night performance was supposed to end with the revelation of a key bit of Insane Clown Posse mythology — the "Sixth Joker's Card." But fans destroyed the mechanism that the rap duo would have used to reveal the card, whatever it was, according to Abbiss. "I've been waiting eight f---ing years to find out what that card is," moaned Jason Gronos, a 25-year-old Juggalo from Detroit, as he wandered outside after the gathering's end. "It's like a big heartbreak." Numerous Juggalos said they were disappointed with their brethren for cutting ICP's show short, with many blaming the incident on the group's youngest fans.

But Jay Diamond, a 26-year-old from Chattanooga, Tennessee, said he was among those who stormed the stage, and that those who did not join him were not real ICP fans. "They're not hardcore. They're scared," he said. Diamond said that ICP should have figured out a way to continue their set despite the chaos. No one was seriously hurt, according to police. A Toledo police spokesperson said that officers arrested one person on Sunday for property destruction, but it was unclear when the arrest occurred. In total, police arrested about 30 fans over the course of the event for such crimes as disorderly conduct, vandalism and, memorably, punching a police horse, according to police Sgt. Richard Murphy.

The Tempest is the tenth album by the hip hop group Insane Clown Posse. It was preceded by The Calm and was followed later in 2007 by The Eye of the Storm EP. According to the opening track on The Calm, the titular Tempest is an incredibly destructive storm that will lay waste to the world, however the second track on the album, “Ride the Tempest,” has confirmed that the titular object is in fact a roller coaster.

on one of the old icp threads there was a link to some picture site with, like, a zillion fan pictures from one of the gatherings and it was one of the most fascinating documents i've ever seen. no offense to the dead (cuz i think his own stuff was just meh), but that dash snow thread on ile made me think that if someone took the best shots and made a book and put them in a gallery you could totally give nan goldin and larry clark a run for their money as far as haunting and bewildering american fever dream cultural anthropology time capsules go.

Bang! Pow! Boom! was recorded in six months. In order to ensure the quality of his vocal recordings, Bruce did not smoke cannabis while recording, and drank hot tea before each take. According to Bruce, the goal was to produce an album that was "very much a part of the Dark Carnival, without it being the seventh Joker's Card". Bruce listened to music by the psychedelic rock band Gong for inspiration.

I might be totally off base but I don't think it's necessarily safe to assume that there would necessarily be significantly more sexual assaults at a juggalo gathering than other male-dominated festival type environments where there is a lot booze/drugs etc. floating around. IDK I could be either overestimating juggalos or underestimating other festival goers or even dudes in general.

ENBB, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

at the very very least, the uh juggalo mythos does contain the figure of the 'juggalette', so even if she is subordinate, she at least exists, which the fan universes of plenty of other bands or genres don't even bother with

q for midwesterners: what does faygo taste like? do you ever see non-juggalos drinking it?

also, wikipedia says 'Faygo's products are notably less expensive than more widely distributed brands'

wtf? how cheap can soda get?

iatee, Monday, 27 July 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

Faygo is a catch-all brand, they make tons of different flavors. Besides the orange, rootbeer, cola, lemon-lime, etc. they have a couple of their own things, my favorite being Rock & Rye which is like some Dr. Pepper / cream soda / cherry hybrid. I think I heard Juggalos are into Red Pop because it's bright red. In terms of cheapness, it's like store brand soda but available everywhere.

I grew up drinking various types of Faygo and the adoption of it as a Juggalo touchstone might be the most WTF aspect of the whole thing to me. I remember it coming in weird shaped glass bottles when I was a kid, and that they had a Mountain Dew rip-off named Moonshine that I seem to recall had a cartoon of a hillbilly on it.

I think the thing that got to me the most about the pictures was that unlike pictures of men, none of the women were ever named. Their pictures were labeled as "tits" or "bitches," etc. The picture labeler didn't even call them "ninjettes" or "jugalettes," which as Scott pointed out are not great to begin with but are at least potentially affectionate, but instead reduced women at this gathering to pejoratives or body parts. Just super dehumanizing and scary.

There's one picture with the caption something like, "I don't know how old this drunk bitch was but she was showing her titties for beer so she sure was drunk" which led to many pronouncements on my part about "If I ever have a daughter, I would never ever ever ever etc. etc."

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 12:40 (sixteen years ago)

I think if I had a son or a daughter and they ended up a Juggalo I would be about as dissapointed as I possible could be save for really big heinous criminal activity or something. I'd much rather them be a Parrothead or into Dave Matthews at least.

idk, I have a lot more sympathy for someone who clings to The Juggalos to create some experience of companionship and family in his/her life than for some pampered annoying Sigur Ros fan. The Sigur Ros fan is less dysfunctional, fucked up, and annoying, but also far less sympathetic a character.

The Martyrdom of Violet J.

Mordy, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

VIOLENT

Mordy, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

dudes you wanna break it down you gotta address the BUTTERFLY:

Violent J: "I was maybe 7 years old. My brother Rob was around 8 or 9 I guess. We were outside playing in front of our house in suburban Berkley, MI. I remember it was a regular summer afternoon, we were hanging out in the yard or whatever when my brother Rob screamed 'Joe I caught a giant butterfly! Hurry up and get the jar!' I grabbed the jar off the steps and ran over to him. Somehow, some way, he had actually managed to catch one of them big ass, pretty, orange, yellow and black butterflies right out of the air with his bare hands. Unbelievable. If you remember anything about being a kid, you remember them things are un-catchable. They'll fuckin' sit there and dance, slow motion, in the air style, right around your fuckin' face while you bust your ass trying to catch it. Somehow, on this regular summer afternoon, Rob happened to scoop it right out of flight with his bare hands. 'Hurry, get the jar opened up and ready, I can feel its wings trying to get away!'

Finally we had it safely and sound in the jar with the fresh poked holes in the lid and everything. We knew that we'd better let it go soon though. We looked at this creature as an animal more than an insect. Plus being that age, this animal was more than just a bug to us. It was our homie. We decided we would just have it spend one night with us and we'd let it go in the morning. Plus we figured a whole family of giant butterflies might even come looking for it if we didn't. I mean this butterfly was so big, and colorful in that jar. It even looked like it had fur on it. It was absolutely awesome.

That night, as usual it was hot as hell in our bed room, so we took the fan and pointed it right into the holes of the butterfly's jar. We didn't think much of it at the time other than hopefully the butterfly will be comfortable while he's spending this night with us.

The following morning, much, much, to our sadness, the Butterfly was dead. Our guess was it had to be the fan blowing on it all night. We didn't mean to harm this beautiful, giant Butterfly at all. We were painfully crushed.

We had a funeral right there in our backyard for it that morning. We buried it in this lil' empty box on top of some napkins and stuff. As we were paying our last respects to this butterfly, both me and my brother Rob made a vow - right then and there we made this vow: "One day, we will both make it to Heaven and apologize to the Butterfly, face to face."

We made that vow when we were just two lil' young-ass kids, but what better time than then? That was us at our cleanest and purest form. We were so loving, only because were were still so untouched and unscatched by the real world. That yard was the only world we knew back then. We didn't know any real negatives, or realties even, because they are kept from most young children. We were at our cleanest points that morning. Ready for the world with our first vow and goal to complete in life.

We didn't know the differences between white, black or Asian people, boys or girls, east sidaz or west sidaz, Jewish or Muslim people. None of that shit mattered to us then, and it still shouldn't. We just looked for smiling faces back then, and we still should.

Look at us all now. It was the world around us that instilled all the hatred and wacky beliefs upon us all. We become one with the world as we walked through it. Once we live some life, our souls ain't as clean anymore. We all got a lil' bit older, we didn't care as much anymore about butterflies or what colors their wings had. We learned who we are supposed to hate, who we should love and even flat out how we should be as people. All of which is taught to us by other people! And who the fuck are they? We spend our entire lives trying not to do what ever is considered "stale" by everybody else. Well fuck that! Consider us stale as fuck then. We some four-week-old, desert-dried-Wonder-Bread, stale-ass individuals then.

We will one day complete our vows before we pass. I want to be as clean as I was when I was 7. I want my own heart telling me what to do and how to live. We will rid our souls of this garbage that was pounded into it, and once again respect the beauty of some fresh ass shit like a Butterfly's wings. One day, we will get to Heaven and apologize to the Butterfly, just like we said we would. We're going to Shangri-La, baby. Sorry if that upsets you... wait, no we ain't! Fuck off if that upsets you. The bottom line is we want nothing more out of the rest of our lives but to see you Juggalos there in Shangri-La with us."

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think I posted this here yet, but I listened to one of their songs recently, "Another Love Song." They sing, "I could go to school instead and get my diploma / I'd rather mount your head on my wall until you fall into a coma." Not only are they asserting violence as a valuable alternative to higher education, but I worry that they think the coma will happen AFTER the decapitation. This suggests that they could've benefited from a higher education even in pursuing their violent misogyny.

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

can i go off for a minute? this doesn't even sound like an honest musical expression to me, like it doesn't even make sense as a kind of hip-hop unless you've already bought into the juggalo cult thing. it's like watching someone play parappa or something, it's not meant to survive on its own up against actual music -- all the conspiratorial joker card fake religion shit reinforces this, "rich boys" against you, judging you, etc. plus everyone involved is profoundly weak as an mc... it's like rastafarianism, only the only oppression it's meant to salve is that you're a dumb loser

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

I liked them when they were doing silly sound-effect nonsense and spacy creepy stuff; the big problem with their original stuff and with the stuff from Milenko on is that, aside from a couple of songs, they sound like they're trying to be legit, and they suck too hard to be legit, so they are better off being goofy sound-effect driven caricatures.

(but then again they've made a fuckton more money than I have so apparently they've been doing something right re: this whole "cultivate a slavish cult with poor critical faculties" marketing plan)

At the moment that the "normal" police and military resources of the bourgeois dictatorship, together with their parliamentary screens, no longer suffice to hold society in a state of equilibrium -- the turn of the fascist regime arrives. Through the fascist agency, capitalism sets
in motion the masses of the crazed petty bourgeoisie and the bands of declassed and demoralized lumpenproletariat -- all the countless human beings whom finance capital itself has brought to desperation and frenzy.

I get both the "written off and ignored" aspect and the "lowest of the low" thing (to some degree at least), and I think that's what I find so fascinating about Juggalos. I'm from Michigan too and saw Juggalos around there a lot, and see them a lot in sorta-methy western towns a lot too, it's like a peek at a big contingent of people who you never see represented anywhere at all, just passed over completely. It's the same reason I love Jesse from Breaking Bad, who might as well be a Juggalo - sketchy, dead-end, fake badass posturing dudes who are everywhere.

I don't think AWK is naive or unself-aware enough that he didn't know behaving that way would produce that reaction, but what do you guys think of their reaction? -- There seem to be at least a few who are "in" on what he is doing. If what AWK is offering is non-judgmental acceptance and enthusiasm, and a good portion of juggalos reject it, it's kind of damning, and I suspect AWK kind of anticipated this on some level, and his gee-whiz happy-go-lucky persona is some passive aggressive way to expose this, maybe not against juggalos in particular, but that's how it played out when he went there.

I'm from Michigan, so I have lived among these people & lol @ the challopy academic curiosity over Juggalos as an inclusive-society on this thread. These people are urchins. The lowest of the low. If fucking ICP, professional wrestling & goddam Faygo soda (looove rock & rye btw) give them a context in which to bond together & comfort themselves from their sucking-void existences, hey why not?

OK, I just read this entire thread, links included & then cringed when I got to this (my) post. It was unnecessarily harsh to begin with & also my mind has changed about the subculture somewhat, especially due to the Denver News article. I was unaware that these people, regardless of their (still questionable) musical reasons for assembly, had such a family-oriented & supportive network which is largely a safe haven for outcasts who don't fit in anywhere else and who are accepted pretty much unconditionally, it seems. In this sense, the Juggalos are a very egalitarian bunch!

And so, here goes: I'm sorry ILX. I'm sorry Juggalos. I was wrong.

Please understand the context of my original opinion, though: The original ICP fanbase, which sprung up grassroots-style in southern MI, largely consisted of the sort of dudes who drove mini-trucks, called you "faggot" & tended to start fights without provocation or reason. This, compounded with what I've observed on YouTube comment threads and such is why I was not down with the clown.

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 29 July 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

i got into an argument with my girl tonight when i told her "yah for like a half hour I kinda was serious about getting some cash together and going to the GotJ but I'd totally need someone to ride with me and get my back" and she was all like "well i'd do it" and I was like "no you wouldn't for various reasons" and her being like "you think you know me so well, but i could totally do this" and me like "i wouldn't even want you to" and her "what you think i'd get raped" and me "dude, I think _I_ would get raped and besides you wouldn't even enjoy it" and her like "I would too, I bet I'd enjoy it a lot" and so on and so on for like fifteen minutes until this culminated with me yelling into a cell phone in the middle of Times Square "Well then GO! GO TO ILLINOIS TO BE WITH THE JUGGALOS AND SLEEP IN A CAR! HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH THE JUGGALOS!"
I am not a great boyfriend all the time.

Ok to Chris you said "You and me whiney! Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe of the aughties! The Solar Powered Faygo Crystal Meth Test!" and to Dan you said "If I lend you a white ass, will you do it?" But to your girl you say "dude, I think _I_ would get raped and besides you wouldn't even enjoy it." I am trying to not to infer subtext.

straight 4 the juggular (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

Anthony, the reason I'd want to do this in the first place is to work with someone on the process of crafting several unpleasant but memorable days into a piece of social commentary and I've learned from experience that the girl and I do not write well together. Above and beyond that, this is just an environment that I wouldn't want to bring someone I care deeply about into?

I enjoy it when people bust Douglas Rushkoff's chops, but Violent J having a long-held kinship with pro-wrestling doesn't blow Rushkoff's observation that ICP is following a path of mainstream commercialization. Where you could probably take issue is the premise that grassroots authenticity and crass commercialism are incompatible, but that would maybe seem too self-serving coming from VICE.

Mad Decent is making it a yearly affair with its second installment of the Mad Decent Block Party, taking place on Saturday, August 15, in Philadelphia. Seeing as how last year was so much fun, it is almost guaranteed that the second go-round will be even better. Featuring Major Lazer, Blaqstarr, Maluca, DJ Sega, and more, the free, community-oriented street fest and carnival runs all day, and features all sorts of fun for kids and adults.

The Mad Decent Block Party II will take place on Saturday, August 15, on the block of 12th St. and Spring Garden St. in Philadelphia.

WOW, I thought the Gong thing was a joke but the "Who Asked You (Ringmaster)" song Dan posted samples the flute riff from Oily Way. Yes, I'm the radio gnome equivalent of a juggalo I guess. It kind of makes sense that these guys are into Gong in the sense of building up a whole silly mythology in order to communicate some half assed spiritual concepts.

Man, it was unfortunate that the person who first reported on my Jugga-photos & Jugga-video referred to me as a "local artist". I make paintings for a living, but I don't wear a beret or anything. People really seem to like to poke fun at that for some reason. "OH, LOCAL ARTIST"! Yeah, that's pretty funny.

Also, I don't read Vice, so I didn't know that I wasn't supposed to go and take pictures of the Jugga-rager. If I may, I'd like to propose the blanket statement: "People will go to events and document aspects of it". So, from now on I'd like to be given credit for predicting people will do that. FOREVER.

I think it is true though, I don't really have "an eye" for Juggalos. My mother first told me about Juggalos 3 years ago, when some of them helped her fix a flat tire at a Subway restaurant in Pennsylvania. Then I found out that I have a younger cousin who is also a Juggalo. I come from Ohio where 9 out of 10 people are 3 degrees from a Juggalo. There are also Mr. Hero restaurants in Ohio and that food is PRETTY TASTY.

My friend & I went to the Jugga-fest because the infomercial was totally awesome and we conned our way into some press passes. Those tickets were $150 otherwise. That's bonkers, even with all of that star power. We didn't go with the intention of making too much out of it, I shot all of those photos on a crummy old Canon S400 & all of the video footage is from a tiny Flip Video camera. We were there for 4 hours total, and that was just the first two days. He has a separate audio document with a lot more audio than I have video. I tried my best to be unbiased when getting footage, but everything was kind of gnarly. I'm sure the last day was the best, I've been to Haiti and the campgrounds was already on it's way to looking like that when we left. Unfortunately we didn't record the Jugga-intellectual who we met in a hotel parking lot after the first night. He talked to us for an hour about the connection between Juggalos & Christianity. Soon the truth will come out between these two things and the Jugga-lord will return and if you're not full of Faygo, you're fucked. He absolutely didn't want to talk about the Juggalo Holocaust, though.

It was surprising how friendly most of the Juggalos were. Though they wouldn't sell us any drugs because we most likely appeared to be narcs, 90% of them were warm and welcoming. I will admit that I was terrified when we first went in, I was expecting it to be an entire campground of extreme wrestling. Like it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to have somebody smash you over the head with a folding chair covered in barbed wire. Alas it was just people celebrating Juggalism, caring a whole lot about not caring.

I did a follow-up interview with a girl who was in the video, it's kind of boring:
http://www.derekerdman.com/ilovemilkshakes/august2009/METAL_KLINK_PUNISHMENT/lette_interview.htm

Here's a video of the same girl getting stoned in a car:

Here's a painting from 2007 called "Black Metal & Juggalo Housewives":

Here's a book from 2007 called "Celebrity Juggalos":
http://derekerdman.com/lup/ilstrns/celebrity_juggalos.htm

I did post on the ILX Chicago thread at one time, mostly to tell them about parties at my house. For some reason at the time I thought it would be a good idea for people on the internet to come to a party. It's safe to report that it's actually not a good idea.

We're just always thinking of ways for Juggalos to have fun."

ie buying crap

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

actually I have to say I take Violent J at his word here - profit motive or no, it's a lot of time & energy to engage an audience the way ICP does year in & year out. I don't know their music like at all but everyone I've met who's come into their orbit at any time says that the impression they came away with was one of a band that cares really deeply about their listeners, is immensely grateful to have such a devoted audience, and cares a lot about, business-speak comin' up here, giving the audience value for money. value's a subjective term - what an ICP fan pays for, you might not give a dime for, but looking at the dynamic between artist & audience there I end up thinking of ICP as decent dudes. Making huge money selling stuff that I personally wouldn't buy but you get my point.

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

thats imo a legitimate assessment - but still for all their lovey dovey community feelings the band is basically a marketing vehicle for selling largely poor kids overpriced low quality product they dont need - and that my ninjas is not the way to treat your loved ones

Also it seems like dragons shouldn't count as appropriate objects of lust and emulation for furries, but maybe I am being too literal here.

Being on tour with ICP has completely lost it’s novelty. This is a dark, lost sub-culture. I never knew that it was possible for so many people across the country to collectively subject themselves to, and then proceed to justify such a lower standard of living. This is obviously a massive generalization, I know not every Juggalo is a uneducated, drug addicted, close-minded degenerate; but it sure is a lot of them.

Hannibal Burress said the juggalos and playing the Gathering was totally cool. Lots of rappers swear by it.

I think the moral is don't be a vapid, fame-sucking, talentless idiot in a place where people mark their displeasure with this practice by throwing cans; and stick to your usual places where people just lurch home to write mean things about you in the Gawker comment section.

Agree with that article but sighed at the last paragraph.

StanM, Thursday, 19 August 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

Can't stop won't stop:

"Did you anticipate this kind of reaction?" I ask them.

"No," sighs Violent J. "I figured most people would say, 'Wow, I didn't know Insane Clown Posse could be deep like that.' But instead it's, 'ICP said a giraffe is a miracle. Ha ha ha! What a bunch of idiots.'" He pauses, then adds defiantly, "A giraffe is a fucking miracle. It has a dinosaur-like neck. It's yellow. Yeah, technically an elephant is not a miracle. Technically. They've been here for hundreds of years…"

"Thousands," murmurs Shaggy.

"Have you ever stood next to an elephant, my friend?" asks Violent J. "A fucking elephant is a miracle. If people can't see a fucking miracle in a fucking elephant, then life must suck for them, because an elephant is a fucking miracle. So is a giraffe."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 October 2010 07:20 (fifteen years ago)

Also:

"I did think," I admit, "that fog constitutes quite a low threshold for miracles."

"Fog?" Violent J says, surprised.

"Well," I clarify, "I've lived around fog my whole life, so maybe I'm blasé."

"Fog, to me, is awesome," he replies. "Do you know why? Because I look at my five-year-old son and I'm explaining to him what fog is and he thinks it's incredible."

"Ah!" I gesticulate. "If you're explaining to your five-year-old son what fog is, then why do you not want to meet scientists? Because they're just like you, explaining things to people…"

"Well," Violent J says, "science is… we don't really… that's like…" He pauses. Then he waves his hands as if to say, "OK, an analogy": "If you're trying to fuck a girl, but her mom's home, fuck her mom! You understand? You want to fuck the girl, but her mom's home? Fuck the mom. See?"

I look blankly at him. "You mean…"

"Now, you don't really feel that way," Violent J says. "You don't really hate her mom. But for this moment when you're trying to fuck this girl, fuck her! And that's what we mean when we say fuck scientists. Sometimes they kill all the cool mysteries away. When I was a kid, they couldn't tell you how pyramids were made…"

"Like Stonehenge and Easter Island," says Shaggy. "Nobody knows how that shit got there."

"But since then, scientists go, 'I've got an explanation for that.' It's like, fuck you! I like to believe it was something out of this world."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 October 2010 07:21 (fifteen years ago)

Violent J pulls himself out of his introspection. They're about to go on stage and he doesn't want to be maudlin. He wants to be on the offensive. He shoots me a defiant look and says, "You know Miracles? Let me tell you, if Alanis Morissette had done that fucking song everyone would have called it fucking genius."

http://gothamist.com/2011/08/17/photos_gathering_of_the_juggalos_an.php#photo-1
The Gathering of the Juggalos is in the middle of nowhere! No internet connection, no cell signal, 35 miles from the closest hotel, an hour and a half from the nearest airport. Even the directions to the site are wrong. On The Gathering site the address that they give you is actually about 4 miles from where the event really is and there’s no signage anywhere to tell you that. Drove into Kentucky before I got on the right path. They list it as being in Cave-in-Rock, IL but it’s really at “Hogrock”. That’s the real name, not kidding (and of course, you have to drive past “Equality, IL” and “Muddy, IL” to get there. Crazy).

My first impression made me think of Vietnam, as I’ve seen it in war movies. There are people everywhere, in various states of undress - topless, naked, half dressed and back again - thousands of tents with people camping everywhere, fireworks going off, tons of bonfires burning, helicopters flying overhead… like nothing I’ve ever seen. The site itself is HUGE. The open air bars (although it’s all BYO and man, do they ever), the food area, the showers, the Experimental Stage, the Wolf Pac Stage, The First Aid area, the Main Stage, the Pro Wrestling Stage, the Midway with actual Carnival Rides, etc. It’s a city unto itself in the middle of nowhere. Think Woodstock meets Meth Lab. So… very intimidating at first.

But I have to say once I started to walk around and talk to people (and shoot them), I had an awesome time. The people were great, really nice and down to earth. Very approachable and soft-spoken even in many cases. Yes, many of them look sketchy and it’s easy to see why people think of them as they do, but really that’s surface and kind of low-hanging fruit. Judge not… right?

Appearances in many cases are deceiving and this group has essentially created their own universe/reality—in fact, the Juggalos & Juggalettes call themselves “The Family” and they get along well with each other. I didn’t see one fight (well, none that were unplanned) but I did see many people helping each other and sharing food, alcohol and other “substances” throughout the weekend.

Some “Wolf Pac” highlights: The Wasabi Snorting Contest, The Whiskey Funnel (a beer funnel, but with 6 oz. of Whiskey), “Blind” (blacked out goggle taped to their heads) Roller Skating Gladiator Fights, some random guy letting people kick him full force in his babymaker, a different guy, as punishment after losing the (alternating) “10 shots of Vodka/10 shots of Hot Sauce” contest, getting straight up punched in his junk, rappers, strippers & porn stars aplenty.

The music, sound and staging/professionalism of the Main Stage music was great - George Clinton & P-Funk, Vanilla Ice (super nice guy), Tech N9ne, Mystikal, Xzibit and of course Insane Clown Posse (aka ICP).

I have been to thousands of shows and I have never seen anything like ICP performing (I watched their whole show from the stage). They spray 2 liter bottles of Faygo soda non-stop throughout their performance—on themselves, the security guards, the audience—literally hundreds, if not thousands, of bottles, non-stop (they had an 18-wheeler backed up next to stage loaded with the stuff), no exaggeration. Their sound was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard, the bass beats just constantly vibrating my chest and making all of the liquid in the bottles backstage ripple like in the movie Jurassic Park when the dinosaur is walking. The vibrations from the music actually broke my camera—it doesn’t work at all anymore, the light just blinks (totally worth it). Mind blowing!

The celebs were all super friendly as well. Charlie Sheen was very personable (and completely lucid), taking photos and just generally enjoying the event and taking it in. Ron Jeremy (!) was there too, separate from Charlie although they knew each other and spent some time chatting and catching up. Also Vanilla Ice, Flavor Flav, Xzibit - it felt like the most surreal Summer Camp experience ever!

mizzell, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

damn, it sounds pretty awesome

for the most part that's the kind of experience I have with Juggalos too, they embrace "low culture" and are a lot nicer than you'd expect

frogbs, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

for what it's worth, rabin's book manages to make many of them quite likeable, with occasional alarming moments. he ends up going native, effectively

treeship, i think it's fine to silently judge juggalos.

I Sunni. Those guys were way more ripped than most Juggalos I've seen. Also, kinda new wave.

I was tempted to start chanting this at our local fireworks celebration when a chant of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" arose. I bet I could have converted it to, but was too chicken that the tide could have turned against me.

i know the send-a-internet-writer-to-the-gathering genre is pretty played at this point but now that we have VOX on the internet i foresee some dope reportage

I'm bummed that they left their ancestral homeland, Cave-in-Rock.
