I'm listening to their debut album Psychic Psummer and am liking this A LOT. They sound very much like Can. Its just under 30 minutes. I want to hear more from them. Anyone else liking this?

The keyboard player quit and they filled the void with Jeremy Freeze (from Jerusalem and the Starbaskets) on guitar. Played in town on Friday night and completely tore it down to the ground. Jeremy provides super solid rhythm guitar action and it basically makes Cave sound extremely dense. They are in Europe now, playing Madrid tomorrow night. Do see them if you can.

aQ tracked me down a cd/lp of Hunt Like Devil hopefully it might be here by the end of the week. It's bizarre that the UK press isn't available in the UK at all, no distro can get it, they must all have been sent to the US.

The first record is great, and has been an undying household/ipod favorite for a year or two now. The centerpiece track off the Hunt Like Devil side -- called Hunt Like Devil, in which the guy says "Hunt Like Devil" a bunch -- stands head and shoulders above anything else on it, but is so damn good that I don't care that the rest is just okay. Maybe the single best post-kraut stoner/space hybrid jam I've ever heard, by anyone, ever.

Loved that double EP so much that I've since picked up almost all of their other stuff, most of it criminally overpriced (hooray for $8 singles). Hunt Like Devil remains the pinnacle by a good margin, though it's all pretty decent if yr into the sound. Psychic Psummer has yet to fully grab me.

FWIW they'll probably never do anything with Important again.
The band has nothing to do with the prices of the records. If you see them on tour, everything is reasonably priced. It's a sore point for the dudes in the band that the record costs 18 dollars in some stores.

I don't get Important as a label. Their only unifying aesthetic criteria seems to be "underground importance" as filtered through OTM trend-hopping, so at least the name fits, but how the fuck do they get away with charging a billion dollars for shit? And how is the transparent pretension of the whole thing not universally repulsive?

Was more dismissive than necessary in prev post. Psychic Psummer deserves more than "pretty decent", even if it ain't my favorite Cave.

It is sometimes their thing, not always.
They've all got a lot of experience with touring and playing rock shows. Sometimes a non-traditional space is just more attractive.
Sometimes, getting paid is.

lol, well that was a bummer. drove an hour down to denver for this show, sat through two opening acts. then, they announce that THREE more bands are going to play at the club next door, and everyone should go watch those. Wait around, wait around, wait around, and it's 1:15am on a Sunday night and i'm literally falling asleep on my feet. last opening act still going strong. i guess i'm getting old or something, but i can't wait until 2am for a band to play! yeesh.

jeez, is that a regular mysterious head shop procedure? driving back home in a few minutes, gonna blast the album once more.

ha i don't know, they played at a reasonable hour the last time! i'm all for playing alternative venues and whatever, but this just got kind of silly.

They described the place to me as less a head shop, more a speak easy. It sounded a lot like this "record store" that operated in my town called "K3v1n's World" that really seemed like a front for the proprietor to get underage kids drunk. Did you get some BBQ, at least?

i missed the bbq! it must be more of a clubhouse kinda place than an actual place of business. though there is a sign out front now! they actually had a pretty awesome cooler full of microbrews.
night wasn't a total loss, got to hang out w/ some friends, drink a few beers. just hope cave plays somewhere slightly better organized next time!

Permanent Records putting out a comp of pre-Cave (and every other Columbia band) the Pows for Record Store Day. Only 100 copies, which is not very many, but the one song i heard was cool. you got any other info Trip?

The main songwriter from that band, Zach (also of HEATER), is living in Vermont on going to Carpentry school.
He hasn't given up on rock, but who knows when or how he'll make his next move.
I think the record Permanent is releasing is the very first Pows session from when Rex and Zach were maybe 15.

The project I was referring to previously was a comp of a bunch of area bands that would have featured the (extremely rough) demo recordings of MOST HIGH, the best band that I was ever in, which feature Dan and Jeremy (now of Cave) and a dude named Drew who lives in Portland now and plays in a group called Loose Values.

That description is kind of cryptic in that Lance never says what is actually on it.
I guess it's probably selections from both Pows records, maybe some Saber Tooth, maybe something from that first recording session?

Well, it says "Liz and I learned all the songs on their first album and ..." so Lance definitely wrote that one.
I am sure Liz writes stuff, too. They are amazing people and it is super encouraging to see how successful they've become.

i was somewhat skeptical as well. i wished them the best but at the time they started there were just waaaaaves of articles about the impending death of the music retail business because of the ubiquity of downloading. of course, what they have going for them is that they're both completely awesome.

So this show was really good! Wume had a weird setup with the synths and drums facing each other and then a sax player over on the side. A few problems with executing the extended jams, but they show a lot of promise. Sad they forgot their records, I would have bought one. Looking forward to hearing what they do in the future for sure.

Cave were the same as they always are -- tight and forward-moving. You can see me scratching my shoulder in the venue's fb cover image though!

I love a day show. Never heard of Wume. The Cave sets in my town last weekend were fun, it was nice to hear a new song and some reworked older material. The event on the Missouri River was kind of disappointing. Isis from the Source family dug it, though.

There are plans for future releases but I think it may take some time. I think that there may be more Bitchin Bajas stuff available before the new Cave stuff. Oh, someone in Chicago has started up a flexi label (flexi-discs like you used to get in cereal boxes or whatever) and Cave is going to do one of those. I think there will only be a couple hundred copies. I am sure the track will be included on another release. It's a good track, includes a flute solo.

Jerusalem and CAVE are "home" for the holiday, they each did a set last night. Both sounded amazing. After touring Europe, CAVE is just tight as hell. They sounded like fucking Deep Purple or something. I was blown away.

"jelly" is definitely some excellent terry riley kinda stuff.

totally -- if i'm not going crazy, they seem to be getting incrementally more melodic, so i hope they reach (and stay at) a comfortable balance of drone and melody. on an appealing trajectory, but i haven't heard the new one yet. their sound is always warm, that hasn't changed.

the sound is what i expected EXCEPT each track gets progressively more and more layered (to the point of busyness occasionally but usually evens out) and ends with a midtempo jam that lends itself to dancing, more like a cave song but through an 80s electropop filter. kinda weird! i like it.

Actually, the dance jam at the end of one of the title track isn't 80s, more Neu. Either way, I like it. Wish I had gone to at least ONE of those shows, but OH WELL.

Bajas just played a local gig last week! BB started as Cooper's solo gig, but has since expanded to a three piece. There is already another album in the can and lots of stuff in progress, too, I think. I heard some of the new Cave record-in-progress, too, and I'm really excited about it.

Their new album Bitchitronics, out July 16, 2013 on Drag City, is ready with the quickness we expect from the Chicago-based band - which is funny, since their area of expertise and mastery is in the area of synthetic ephemeral sonic languidity known more instinctively, inclusively (and let's face it, irresponsibly) as drone music. Put it this way - they make slow music at a fast pace. Bitchitronics is their first realized record as a trio.

Since their first appearance way back in 2010, Bitchin Bajas approach has been simple - unfold tones via synth and keyboard, allowing micro-frequencies to press against each other in a way that pleases the ear, the mind and the soul. From record to record (three albums, a split 7" and a split 12", a cassette and an 12"EP), their process is redefined by confronting the technologies of formative and outmoded machines, sliding into different quadrants of the ambient/post-organic/electronic/and drone universe each time around. Thus, the experience of slipping inside their music seems so singular and pure, like floating naked in a sensory deprivation tank. Just us and our minds and the music. Simple, right? But other things occur underneath...

For Bitchitronics, the concept was: use tape techniques to create and then solve problems - loops and edits were there to make things fun and the music great in the style of experimental tape pioneers upon whose shoulders the Bajas play. Mission bitchin' accomplished! Recording was mostly done in, all over and around a house in Fennville, MI with three tape machines reeling in the sounds - sometimes, in addition to sounds that have never seen the light of day, you're also hearing the sound of the light of day on the tape (or when they recorded at night, evening stars). Two 1/4" tape machines were utilized to make loops and execute the Bitchitronics sound system, one of which discreetly captured the combined sounds of the loops with live playing. Once done, it was back to HQ where edits of the 1/4" recordings were utilized to create larger tapestries on the 2-track master tape.

You want to use the Bitchitronics method for yourself? That's how it's done! Taking the long path to realize this album makes for some heavenly music indeed.

Behold, Threace! It's the brand new LP from international touring sensations CAVE, arriving October 15th, and it might just bring an end to your party -- no more dancing, no more talking, just people listening to every last clang, tweet and honk of a band really getting after it. Recorded on a 1" 8-track Scully machine that may or may not have spent some quality burn-in time at Muscle Shoals, Threace was half-planned and half-jammed using different mic placements, building up from a basic set of as few mics as possible. Then, they got out the razor blade and...well, this isn't the Rolling Stones! They used it to cut tape (and realities) together into a metro-musical albumen that's only started to flower in this world.

Threace comes on guitar up and jelly tight, saving the keys for color commentary among the beats. Cooper and Jeremy explore their six-string relationship, finding shared space, ducking, parrying, working the edges, and finally, twinning to gut-clutching effect. Meanwhile, there's a cameo appearance from sax and flute textures in here that create new soul-jazz sensations. Last and most, Dan and Rex bring the heavy with thickness, moving rhythm with exceptionally light feet, playing coloristically while always driving, driving, ever driving, bearing the lode and raising the arch under which everything happens in CAVE.

CAVE are known for playing with rolling funk minimalism; Threace finds them inhabiting their cut-up aesthetic with tremendous ease and fewer reference points than before. They access new depths of meditative stasis, and then torpedo the dream and turn on a dime to ride the riffs again. On Threace, CAVE have gained access to their unconscious mind, and we hope they never find their way out again.

After the record release show last night, I feel like Bitchin Bajas deserve their own thread. I had to leave early, but they were playing as a 9 piece with strings, 3 guitars, a flute and a...bass clarinet? It was really great, better than expected. I'm not much into boosterism but I feel like they're going somewhere. They're not all the way there yet (imo), but they've got the texture just right. I am hoping they bring that guitarist back who played last night. WHOOEY. It was good, aaaaaaaaalmost reminded me of some of the more soaring guitar parts in LT-LN era Popol Vuh but maybe that's just wishful thinking. It's just the melodic boost they needed though, I liked it. More flute pls!

I mean they named their album Bitchitronics ffs -- they are practically begging you to like them! Anyway I plan on listening to it while I clean the floors today. Cosmic yoga mop time.

it was great!! they have a new secret weapon -- i don't know the guy's name but i saw him when he played with bitchin bajas. i really liked the added baritone sax/flute stuff. he also had a snare and cymbal but i couldn't always hear their contribution. as always, they were super tight. i have an altogether new appreciation of the drummer for playing the exact same beat for as long as he plays it. yikes.

yeah that dude is a machine. there is some horn action on the new one, it is pretty good. really does kinda sound like herbie hancock/headhunters/miles in the 70s at times.

yeah they were very tight, the rhythm section in general is sick. i hadn't seen them in a few years, i was surprised that dude who used to pretty much only play keys was now pretty much only playing guitar. he's a good guitarist but i missed the keys tbh, my fave song live had him on keys and the "secret weapon" on flute. the flute playing was great bc he wasn't doing jazz solos or whatever, he was doubling the keyboard part and it sounded amazing.

We didn't play it for twenty minutes. I sang maybe three verses and improvised a "freakout" that climaxed with repetition of the phrase "don't shake me, lucifer." We were going to cover a Roky Erickson song but current events changed our original plan.

'silver headband' on the new one is so sick. not many can evoke the neu! vibe without resorting to a generic motorik beat. agree with tyler on the rest of it pulling serious fusion moves.
