― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
i always do fav singles lists -- so when you asked for "favorite song" i went with a deep cut
― some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
also "your favorite" makes me feel like going with a more personal choice than just "hi i like 'Since U Been Gone' too"
― some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)
Well what's the BEST song of the 00s then
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)
I want everyone's big choice!
i dunno dog -- i gave an honest "favorite" choice and a few months ago when we went through the "biggest/most decade defining" thing i had a few suggestions. "best" is a tall tall order, though.
― some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)
I might agree with Fetchboy. I'd be hard-pressed to think of another song that blew me away as much on first listen or as consistently thereafter as '1 Thing'.
― Actin' on the moment (spontaneous) (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 21 August 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)
That said, my official choice will take some hardcore pondering.
― Actin' on the moment (spontaneous) (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 21 August 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
yeah 1 Thing is pretty mindblowing.
― I love rainbow cookies (surm), Friday, 21 August 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)
I don't think there should be a difference between "best" and "favorite". If you choose the one you 'appreciate' the most because of whatever reasons, but that is NOT your favorite, your being dishonest IMO... my chose is definitely the BEST and my FAVORITE.
― one boob is free with one (daavid), Friday, 21 August 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

Daft Punk - "Digital Love"
― Spencer Chow, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)
I think the "this is my favorite because it's the best" mentality is a certain way of thinking that I don't share. I look for certain things in music that not everyone does, and even if I believe in something's value I don't necessarily think it's inherently the best on some objective level.
― some dude, Friday, 21 August 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)
'best' is just a non-starter. best musically, best to dance to, best selling etc.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 21 August 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah if I went the some dude route I'd have said of montreal - "we were born mutants again with leafling" but I guess I read the thread more as the "song you couldn't imagine never hearing again" or "song that sums up the decade" /alex in manhattan
― ash ra - i love temple (k3vin k.), Friday, 21 August 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)
"Everything Is Free" - Gillian Welch
― ρεμπετις, Friday, 21 August 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
All You Need is Hate - The Delgados
I am not a huge fan of the Delgados or symphonic indie in general but there is something about this song, so Steely Dan-ish in construction (by which I mean it is a lush, beautiful, expertly plaid and very artificial sounding song that is undercut by vicious, bitter, deeply idiosyncratic lyrics). I can't think of any other song that has had such an instant emotional impact on me in the past decade. Sure there's other stuff that's been more immediately exciting or sonically innovative or whatever, but from a strictly classical-songwriting sorta view this is a perfect song. I always want to sing along to it, and the words always hit me in a weird way, the string arrangement is gorgeous, the sentiment brutal and wry.

(OK sorry Whiney, I'll just reply to this and then I'll stop, promise.)
See, there are a lot of points in this argument that I would debate. You say I look for certain things in music that not everyone does, but isn't that how everyone (OK maybe not everyone, but a lot of people who really care about music) feels?
Also I really don't think there's any kind of objective level, only a degree of consensus (which can be high, but never to the point of objectivity).
On the same topic, that's why I object (and I know I'm not the only one) to the idea of 'guilty pleasure', I think it's paradoxical.

7/4 (shoreline) - broken social scene
my listening habits have progressively drifted much further towards rap and r&b over indie since 2005, but this is still a perfectly encapsulated moment of summer, feist floating effortlessly over the uneven drums and those cascading HORNS. evocative of a particular time/place/mood.
that said, the presence of oye mi canto, oh & 1 thing make me v. happy indeed.

Now that I've heard "On My Own" a couple more times I've realized maybe part of its appeal for me is that the "chorus" reminds me of "Biology". No?
― one boob is free with one (daavid), Saturday, 22 August 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)
Ooh, there is a similarity, yeah! Only in the final two chords, though, and then only at a very basic level which doesn't take into account Schnauss' genius for layering. OMO's chorus is more graceful, sublime, and was released 2 years earlier. :D
Biology's still a good song!

― Reading his posts is like watching The Ring (kshighway), Saturday, 22 August 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)
Don't know why but at the moment I'm thinking Justin Timberlake - "What Goes Around..." -- between that and The-Dream's "I Luv Your Girl," will update it later on, though.
