Let's compile a Best of 70's Doom cdr...

Feb 13th 1970 is the date when this all started.

I think for songs to count, there needs to not just be a heaviness, but also a dark/malevolent vibe.

Plenty of groups accidentally made some doom before it was commonly coined a genre in the 80s (thank you Leif Edling!).

Let's nominate one song per post. Youtube links are encouraged but not necessary.

We'll make a really heavy comp x 2 with ease.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

No one can argue with those three chords.

So I'll second with nominating:

2. Judas Priest - Winter

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

3. Van der Graaf Generator - White Hammer

I can't find a link but if you own The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other (or a best of), listen to the coda of this song. Sure, it starts all elfin and fluffy, but it gets as heavy as Sabbath at the end. And it's from 1970 too.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

4. Black Sabbath - Under the Sun

Maybe as heavy as they ever got?

I'll come back with a bunch of obscurities, but I at least wanted to get the ball rolling here.

english band who did a private press LP (65 copies) that they gave away to friends and girlfriends, now it's worth thousands of dollars. thankfully it's pretty easy to find reissues of. the guy who does some of the fuzzier guitar parts wound up in wicked lady, who should be posted in here at some point.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 04:14 (sixteen years ago)

jesus fuck, loading this thread with images on basically destroyed my POS computer. uh, thanks Skot and Gott!

yeah, surprised folks weren't hip to that Nazareth cover in "everything is known" 2009, but I was similarly blown away when I picked up my $2 copy of 'Loud and Proud' in mid-90s .. plus killer Little Feat and Joni Mitchell covers too!! I used to rock "Hollis Brown" all the time on the all-70s Metal radio show I did around the same time. But it really is the most extreme thing in their catalog tho even if all their albums are worthwhile.... just don't go looking for more of the same. Definitely get 'Razamanaz' (title cut was covered by the Supersuckers) next after 'Loud and Proud' though

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 04:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, razamanaz is awesome and pick up that 25 cent copy of "hair of the dog," for god's sake. i always skip "love hurts" though.

good question, man. but the rumor was that everything on that label (psi-fi) was 90s stuff presented as being micro-editions from the 70s. most of them are pretty good, but not as heavy as golem.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

But it really is the most extreme thing in their catalog tho even if all their albums are worthwhile.... just don't go looking for more of the same.

Thanx for being honest, stormy!

Since this (great) thread is crashing browsers, can we maybe just post artist/title?

I don't have the mp3s at work with me, but something off the Socrates Drank The Conium record ought to go on here...

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

Controversial maybe, but the riff here is awesome:

I thought I could make it work because you look a bit like a man (aldo), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

And even more controversial definitely, but this riff is undeniable:

To me, correct T. Rex inclusion would be Childe, off the self titled album.

"I want to give every child a chance to dance" KRUHK-RRRUHHHH

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

This comp is looking more and more like a box set.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

Not a problem if it's an MP3 mix!

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

nate im so glad i hassled you to start this!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

You are a good man Herman.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't think we would run to a box set lol!
The 80s and 90s and 00s ones might reach ridiculous sizes.
Let's compile a 120gb ipod of 90s doom ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

As readers here may have seen, I have made a corollary thread that compiles the list of nominees thus far (not yet including those posted in the sequel thread)...

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

which is a great idea. I pity poor nate having to track all these mp3s down to compile a huuuuuuuuuge s3ndspac3 file or 20

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

Haha. This is why I have doom lackeys.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

they will be too stoned!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)
