Has anybody here been to a Boredoms gig?

I'm going to see them next Saturday at the RFH (supporting John Cale, yaaaawwwwwwnnnn) - what should I expect?

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or: can you think of another group who just keep getting better and better, 10 plus years after they first formed?

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am so excited about this gig (although wtf are they doing supporting john cale?). I have never seen them before either but have been listening to them for about seven years and - maybe I'll be proved wrong & shouldn't say this - but you can't usually go wrong with Japanese psych noise. Well, I can't.

octave kitten, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how did i not know about this?? tempting...

toby, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seen them twice, both times different and equally crazed -- the last time I saw them they just did one long loud jam for about forty minutes or something. Seeing Eye fling himself from the drum riser into the air wearing those clothes is a pure and wonderful thing.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw them with chris knox, at least chris knox licked everyone in the audience.

keith, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, but I saw Eye performing with John Zorn. Zorn was "conducting" his singing. This was during a performance at, I think, the Zellerbach Theater in Philadelphia--anyway, some place where people buy season subscriptions. I noticed a lot of people walking out while this was going on. I can't say that I loved it myself, but the whole thing was pretty funny. After much of the more conservatively dressed members of the audience had left, Zorn came back after an intermission and played somewhat more accessible music (Morricone covers, etc.).

DeRayMi, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Keith didn't enjoy himself I know I'm in for a gd time.

Andrew L, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw them on their 99 US tour (at the 9:30 Club in D.C., which still makes no sense to me...the place wasn't half full, could've easily fit in the Black Cat, but i digress). don't know what i was thinking, but i actually brought my fairly conservative (taste wise) Dad to it, and he loved them. i don't blame him, though - sometimes capital-a Amazing is just Amazing regardless of who you are. pretty much hands down the greatest live performance i've ever witnessed; think Super Ae x10, with 3 drummers going full tilt all the way through, total tribal groove. my favorite part of the night, toward the end, when eYe decided to share the mic with a kid up front, and they just took turns screaming back and forth, until it was clear that noone can compete with eYe in that category.

al, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best show I've ever seen; nothing's particularly close either.

Kris, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay - who here's been to a Boredoms gig and a Acid Mothers Temple gig and which was more intense?

J Blount, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i went to a boredoms gig not really knowing what to expect....

i think i thought that it would be more noisy, like i was told about the nirvana shows

it was total psych...

easily one of the best shows i've ever seen, music to put you into the best possible coma

the musical equivalent to the conclusion of Ballard's 'Drowned World'

geeg, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Arg! You guys are fucking killing me...when are they coming to the US? And anyone heard of them working on a record with the new line-up?

Mark, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen the Acid Mothers Temple (who were great, BTW) and like I said, it wasn't even close.

Kris, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surprise - they were AMAZING! They played for just over an hour, one long rolling wave of joyous pulsing psych, ebbing and flowing, occasionally locking into a Neu-like motornik groove, Eye shouting, dancing, leaping around, 'conducting' the three drummers, ethereal warbling from the lady drummer who also played a little casio-type keyboard, so much energy and precision, focussed but free.

Andrew L, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

andrew- you're so lucky! Does the fact you haven't mentioned John Cale tells us all we need to know?

Julio Desouza, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, yes it does. john cale was dire, even without having to follow the boredoms

Bob Zemko, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh? Why are the AMT being contrasted with Boredoms? Because they're both Japanese? Well, duh.

That's like comparing... ah fuck it. Think up yr own.

Jerry, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hello, I've seen the Boredoms 6 times... favorite time: 1994 at the Palace (hollywood) with TFUL282... next favorite: 1998 at Slim's SF SUPER AE... 3rd best: ATP USA 3 drum nu-tribal-psych

worst time: Lollapalooza. fuck that shit.

I'm psyched for this.

dmr, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if the number seven has some special significance in Japanese culture, like it does in Christian theology:

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

o. nate, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

this lawn actually has huge gates and walls

mizzell, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

[quote[I wonder if the number seven has some special significance in Japanese culture, like it does in Christian theology[/quote]

eye's pretty disconnected from mainstream japanese culture, his interests are pretty fringe... much of his work is indebted to american 70s/80s hardcore, primitive sungod worship, pacific islander (and ainu) culture, remote siberian jews harp healers, etc.

seven's traditionally lucky in Japan I think? there are seven gods of good luck, and the tanabata festival on 07/07 (or the seventh day of the seventh chinese lunar month, or the seventh of august, sometimes, i think?), when you write wishes on pieces of paper and tie them a tree.

Jon, thank you so much for those!

I thought about reviving a thread due to that fine and amazing product linked above. Good work!

sleeve, Sunday, 30 December 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

Saw them three times. All good, all different.

First time was at Spanky's in Riverside CA in 1992.. this was the Brutal Truth, Boredoms, Pain Teens tour. Pain Teens cancelled due to Bliss Blood being sick, Brutal Truth headlined, so we got to see Boredoms but only after two perpetual bad metal bands opened... it was worth the wait.

Second was a the Whisky A Go Go in 1994 for the U.S. Pop Tatari tour. Trumans Water opened.

Third was at the first This Ain't No Picnic fest in 1999, which was the one where Sonic Youth got all their gear stolen.

I drove five hours to see them live on their last tour. It was totally worth it.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 30 December 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

I saw them on that 99 tour at the Crocodile... went at the behest of a friend, knowing almost nothing about them. To this day it remains the loudest, possibly most exciting show I've ever seen. I'm sure glad I got talked into that one.

Sparkle Motion, Sunday, 30 December 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I saw that tour in Portland at Crystal Ballroom. I've never seen anyone jump that high without a springboard or trampoline in my life.

It was rad.

Maybe the best show I've ever seen?

Yoshimi was really killing it with these metal guitar riffs on her keyboard. The wall of guitars was appropriately monumental. I totally lost track of time. They did an encore.

At one point early in the set Yoshimi and ATR both stood up at once and switched to their cymbals, the lights went all red and gold and it was as if the very heavens had parted.

sleeve, Friday, 21 March 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty sure ATR isn't in the band, n00b.

cool thanx

I wonder who the dedicated techie guy was who had to stay behind the wall of guitars all night constantly retuning it and replacing strings. he was working hard.

sleeve, Saturday, 22 March 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

show in SF was pretty great - tho also exhausting. Musically, I got tired just watching the drummers play (I think the band has gotten a lot more virtuosic in their playing), and they did two encores. Ears ringing, kind of dazed leaving the show.

I did talk to eye a bit before the show -- can't really believe he got thru it w/a broken leg!!

Dominique, Saturday, 22 March 2008 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

jaxon, Saturday, 22 March 2008 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

los angeles ~ amazing.
a redefinition of contemporary live music.

much can be repeated...the drumming was virtuosic, the guitar-machine techies worked all night tuning the damned and beautiful thing, and they played a two-song encore.

the crowd was kind of lame though.
i really don't know how you can resist the urge to jump and dance to the tribal boredom rhythm.
it's such communal, thriving music, not a spectacle to be stared at, imo.

srslyghengiskhan, Saturday, 22 March 2008 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

i was into it for awhile, but i couldn't stay with it. it would kinda come and go as far as something i could latch onto.

did eye really have a broken leg?? you'd never have known it.

Lingbert, Saturday, 22 March 2008 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

I just got back from the show. 4th B(v)o(o)rdoms show, 4th surprise, blown away again. There was also a nice little dance pit up front. I hope someone got footage of Eye wrestling with the multineck cthulhu busting strings each blow to it near the end of the main set. Best live Boredoms moment i've seen.

Yeah, Eye said during the encore he's had a bad foot since L.A. It didn't detract from his performance. The energetic hobbling made him seem more wizardy. And still, including encore, 2 hours of that. love to the Bores.

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 22 March 2008 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

Glad to hear they're back on form. I actually found last year's Glasgow Arches gig pretty disappointing. Was anyone else there?

Soukesian, Saturday, 22 March 2008 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT TO SEE THEM IN BOSTON. YAY.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Saturday, 22 March 2008 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Glad to hear they're back on form. I actually found last year's Glasgow Arches gig pretty disappointing. Was anyone else there?

Aye, I thought it was good, admittedly I hadn't seen them previously. I don't imagine what they're doing now will differ much from it I don't think that would have been a bad night (there was nothing lacklustre about the performance). It was pleasingly loud and although there were some spells that were a bit of a bore (haw haw), the encore for example, there were passages when they really hit it.

jim, Saturday, 22 March 2008 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

May just have been me - I'd had a bastard of a time getting to the gig, and they'd been so great the previous occasion they played there. "I demand to have my mind blown. Right now. No. No. That's not it. Still not really feeling it . . "

Soukesian, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

I think the opinion that it wasn't as good as previous shows was fairly prevalent to be fair. Probably more impressive to me because I was green.

jim, Saturday, 22 March 2008 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Weird, I've seen this incarnation of Boredoms four times now and that Glasgow Arches gig last year was prob my fave of all of em - first time w/ the wall guitars, as Jim sez they were "pleasingly loud", and I thought they started off at just the right pitch of intensity etc

Ward Fowler, Saturday, 22 March 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I was there too, the "pleasingly loud" occasionally became "annoyingly loud" as the sounds began to lose a bit of definition, but I was in a pretty good spot and had my mind thoroughly blown. I heard bad sound complaints from a couple of other people too.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 22 March 2008 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Human Bell were enjoyable enough. Had lost interest by the end.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

Notable from the evening:

- Those ORBS!
- You know those guitars that are like, 7 guitars?
- DRUMS
- A very, very small and VERY adorable Asian child running around First Ave with a flashlight.
- Some fat douchebag in dreadlocks sitting cross legged and doing elaborate spiritual moves during the Human Bell set. Awesome.
- ACID!! POLICE-AHHH!!
- Dancing people.
- The encore where they got boss.
- Turns out the bass player of my band was there!

Dumb things that happened:

- Hecklers yelling Free Bird and Slayer during the Human Bell set.
- Hecklers making sound effects during the brief quiet parts of the Boredoms set.
- I accidentally elbowed a guy.
- I FORGOT TO GET DRUNK

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

I was talking about this actually - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re...Remix%3F

Eye remixes of other artists, described thusly by Other Music -

"a collection of remix and DJ work by Boredoms frontman Yamataka EYE, is all killer, no filler. EYE's been no stranger to the remix world -- he's been tearing tracks apart (mostly for Japanese indie, hip-hop, and dance artists, many unfamiliar to Western audiences) and rebuilding them as stomping tropical monsters since around the Super Ae period, turning anything he touches into jungle music in a quite literal sense (though not necessarily the drum-n-bass sense)."

stingy, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

it fucking sucks when some "freebird" type loser shouts out "acid poice-ayyy" during a quiet moment. happens every time.
Does that really happen at every show? In mpls someone did it before the encore began and Eye just smiled and said it back. It seemed like a nice moment at the time. The sound effects heckling (I don't know what else to call it), unfortunately, was mid song.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 27 March 2008 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

you mean Rebore Vol. 0? They had at least one copy in Portland.

goddamn it, we both played ourselves (i got one shortly after you). did the same thing with that dungen - ta det lungt thing. ordered from norway or wherever, and then a year later they flooded stateside.

i don't really know, was talking out of my ass. saw them at bowery ballroom and it happened. saw them at shepards bush empire and it happened. want to say it happened a third time somewhere, but i can't picture where it would have been so i guess i've only seen them perform twice.

sanskrit, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

soft circle and black pus listed as openers for nyc.

tehresa, Thursday, 27 March 2008 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

sanskrit, if it makes you feel any better the Rebore copies were 50 bucks plus $5 to check the item for the night. not TOO much cheaper!

sleeve, Thursday, 27 March 2008 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

50 bux for a rebore is redic

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 27 March 2008 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, not unheard of

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

I was a bit bummed that the Super Roots CD were selling for $20 each. I don't paying a little more at a show for something I can get at a local store, if it increases the chances of a band I love from coming back to tour here again. On the other hand, those Super Roots CDs are, what, 10 bucks elsewhere? 2x the normal price breaks my loyalty threshold. :/

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't mind paying, etc.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Were they the Vice reissues? I could understand it if they were the import versions.

o. nate, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

cds and records are supposed to be CHEAPER at gigs!!!

s1ocki, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

you're cutting out the middleman and the band makes WAY more by selling htem to you directly.

s1ocki, Thursday, 27 March 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Just went to the show last night in Chicago, and agreed about the prices being high, but I guess they have to make a living and it's a capitalist system, so if people are willing to pay it, go ahead. But yeah, $20 for Super Roots is quite much, especially when most of them aren't that long. I was more interested in some Yoshimi thing, but it was $40. There was also the Yoshimi and Mats Gustafsson collab for $30, which I think my local store had for $17 or $18. No Eye - Re: Remix though, sadly, but then that would have probably cost $40 too.

ANYWAY, the show itself was TREMENDOUS & SUPER, as everyone has said. It was my 2nd time seeing them, and having the 7-necked guitar thing added a lot to it, both musically and visually. And having the show in the round and being able to stand right beside the stage, specifically next to Eye's set-up was great. I can't believe he was still able to move around and even jump as much as he did with the broken foot. Very impressive indeed. Boredoms for life!

P.S. Does anyone have any idea about the music being played between bands? It was various tribal chant type stuff, probably just from comp's maybe, but I wouldn't mind checking out more of that kind of thing.

Yunnan Colorfree? it is v good

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it was Yunan Colorfree, looking at the cover of that one. Sounds cool though, cover of Death Valley 69 with Kim Gordon! I don't remember the title of what was there last night, unfortunately. There was also a DVD of OOIOO videos, I think that was $50. Does anyone have that Live at Sun Flancisco CD/DVD? Would love to see the footage, but can't justify spending $53 for it.

stingy, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

This coming August 8th, in New York, Boredoms will be heading up a sequal to the 77 Drummer Boadrum concert that was held under the Brooklyn Bridge. This year, 8/8/08, there will be eighty-eight drummers. Numerology aligns expansion.

DOLLAR IS WEAK

Sure, but they were selling the Vice reissue CDs (not imports as o nate inquired) for $20 each, which I can find for $10 at any store in town.

Hey, they can sell the CDs for any price they want! Whatever. But if they don't sell any because they're jacked too high, then that hurts the Bores too. Weak dollar sucks for anyone touring the U.S., whether the band is from the U.S. or not. Just sayin'.

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

$10 refers to wrapped/new/sealed, btw

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 27 March 2008 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

lol but they dont live in america

I would also like to know about this

Show was FANTASTIC yesterday, although not as completely mind-blowing as when I saw them at Intonation, despite lack of length/encore.

Dominique, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

this sounds like a recipe for disaster

Other Music is very excited to be hosting an in-store performance with Japan's legendary Boredoms, who will be playing in the round on the shop floor this Monday, March 31st!! As you can imagine, space will be extremely limited, so starting today (Friday) at 6:00PM, we're going to give single-person passes to the first 50 people who come into the shop and purchase their new album Super Roots 9, out on Thrill Jockey (one CD per customer -- sorry, no web orders). Your receipt will be your ticket, which you'll need to have with you to gain entrance on Monday night.

mizzell, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno if sales to the show are that crazy, honestly.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 28 March 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Creeztophair, Friday, 28 March 2008 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

so good tonight in boston. was hoping for the trident, a la 77boadrum, but the wands and broomstick(?) worked just fine. looking forward to brooklyn in august.

edb, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

I chickened out and didn't go to Other Music on Friday. I wonder if forks did.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 30 March 2008 06:19 (eighteen years ago)

according to brooklyn vegan's comments, other music had around 20 tickets left at 4:00 pm, today (saturday)

i would love to go, but i have no one to go with. and going to concerts alone is kinda boring for me.

Creeztophair, Sunday, 30 March 2008 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

last night in ny's terminal 5

BleepBot, Monday, 31 March 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the crowd on the first floor was a little less than crazy. The performance was so, so awesome though.

maciej recognizing trill, Monday, 31 March 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

It was louder upstairs

sexyDancer, Monday, 31 March 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna be completely honest - I saw them last night in DC and I was bored outta my fucking mind. Not even the good kind of bored where you can go to sleep, but the kind where you get really agitated and can't sit still. I've seen them before and enjoyed it. I don't think it's that the show got worse (although maybe it did a little bit from the shit they were doing a couple years ago), but I think I'm outgrowing any kind of "experimental" music. I used to love the shit, but now I just like old plain-ass country rock.
