(i haven't heard anything past yield though. i think i bought binaural but honestly can't name a song from it.)

ian, Friday, 25 September 2009 04:42 (sixteen years ago)

No Code in 2009, Vs. back in the day.

Euler, Friday, 25 September 2009 05:53 (sixteen years ago)

No Code or Yield.

The only one I'm really rooting against here is Ten, though. Not because it's the big popular one, but because of Ament's extensive use of the fretless electric bass.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

fretless electric 12 string bass at that... god, what a douche.

Change Display Name: (Steve Shasta), Friday, 25 September 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

It's just the worst sounding amplified instrument in the world. A rock n' roll killer.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 06:03 (sixteen years ago)

haha ten is my favourite by some way actually. vitalogy has some great tracks, but also about six tracks of filth.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 25 September 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)

fuck, such a difficult one - each album is so different in vibe and texture to the last. mind you, i'm one of the many who gave up after yield (don't know what the reason for this exodus was, as it was a great album).

dog latin, Friday, 25 September 2009 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

NO CODE. but fuck it they're all good.

jesus mighty lord chewy (stevie), Friday, 25 September 2009 08:51 (sixteen years ago)

great to see all the support for the album i started my most bonkers ILM thread about: Pearl Jam - No Code

I think I'm gonna go with Vitalogy though

some dude, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

I've never noticed that triangle/eye pattern in No Code before!

nate woolls, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:08 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for Yield, but Backspacer is rapidly catching up.

Little starbursts of joy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 September 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for yield too. i could've voted for any of them, but i think yield is the one i'd probably wanna listen to right now. i'd be interested in hearin g backspacer.

dog latin, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

Vitalogy. Not as consistent as Yield, but its highlights are the best songs they ever did, like Corduroy.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

Vitalogy and Yield are both inconsistent albums with some of their best stuff ever imo, but the former has funny weird loud interesting filler where the latter has bland wishy washy filler

some dude, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

I relistened to "Faithful" a few days ago and remembered what a great sleeper it was.

Little starbursts of joy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 September 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

that's one of those songs that now and then sounds great but usually bores me. "MFC" and "In Hiding" are incredible, though.

some dude, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

No love for Vs.? Was my favourite album back in 93/94. Mind you it hasn't aged that well.

sofatruck, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Half of Vs. is great. Daughter, Elderly Woman, Dissident, etc. But the other half, not so much.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

I heard "Go" in my friend's car. Boy, talk about awful drum sound.

Little starbursts of joy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 September 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

Since the reissue, I have to vote for 'Ten'. Once they scraped off all those awful effects in the remix, it was a whole new album for me. I could actually picture them all standing in a room playing the music. There's so much energy in that first album...I love what they became with Yield and No Code, where they really honed their songcraft...but the sheer force of opening with 'Once' has to make Ten my pick. But DAMN Backspacers is great.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

It's fun hearing Ten without all that Parashar reverb, but it wasn't nearly as enjoyable or illuminating as I'd hoped.

some dude, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

'go' alone makes vs. my choice here.

m the g, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

Vs. has a lot of really great songs, but seems forgotten by time somehow. I'm glad "Rearview Mirror" is still something of a live staple, though.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah RVM is like the sole reason I don't totally dismiss that album as totally just singles'n'fluff.

herstory womayne (some dude), Friday, 25 September 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

Going for Yield.

Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 1 October 2009 09:44 (sixteen years ago)

to my ears yield is irredeemably bland and blithe, suffering from uninspiring songwriting, indifferent performances and lacklustre energy levels. i'll never knowingly listen to it again.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 1 October 2009 09:52 (sixteen years ago)

After 15 years, I'm giving up trying to like Eddie Vedder's voice. its a shame bacause I think i'd like Pearl Jam otherwise.

tomofthenest, Thursday, 1 October 2009 12:21 (sixteen years ago)

Vitalogy is my personal fave even though No Code is probably the best but I think vitalogy needs a vote , but really the 1st 5 are unfuckwithable.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 1 October 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)

When Yield came out, I knew it would be the last Pearl Jam record I would take any time over. It was a very AOR-styled album on the surface, and yet I voted for it in this poll because despite the superficial blandness it's still crammed with really good tracks, is concentrated as an album statement and yet still manages to get certain experimental bits like "I'm Open" and the bizarre Greek wedding secret track just right. Vitalogy, I've always had a lot of time for - particularly for things like "Pry, To", "Hey Foxymophandlemamatthat's me", ballads like "Better Man" (an amazing track). Still Vitalogy is inconsistent because it juxtaposes rock experimentalism (something they'd work on further with No Code) with hoary old rock tracks that take up 50% of the album and just do their job. The whole thing is uneasy and doesn't sit well. Something that does sit better is "Vs", but as mentioned upthread is the fact that the songs have aged badly. "Ten" is classic rock through'n'through, but I didn't even know there was a remaster, so I'm eager to hear it.

He's right about Jack Irons, but relistening to Yield this morning, it's a lot patchier than I remember it, and 'flow' is most certainly not its thing.

jealous! waiting for west coast tour dates to announce, dying to see them again

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:11 (ten years ago)

they're closer to my whereabouts tomorrow, and I'm very tempted. I'm just sad that the person I saw them with 15 years ago (when I wasn't even old enough to drink) is unavailable.

I registered to vote at that Pearl Jam show too.

I'm thinking of going, but being a weeknight and knowing they'll play 3 hours is almost making it a dealbreaker :/.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:33 (ten years ago)

woohoo. it's a garbage seat but managed to get a ticket for almost $30 below face value on StubHub for tomorrow night's show.

You're in Tampa? Sweet.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 April 2016 20:26 (ten years ago)

well, Orlando, but it's only like 60-75 minute drive for me. I feel like I go to Tampa for more shows than I do for O-Town.

"State of Love and Trust."

I haven't heard "Jeremy" since the late '90s.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 April 2016 21:21 (ten years ago)

weirdly enough I got "Jeremy" when I saw them in '00, which I thought they'd be avoiding. and I got "State of Love and Trust" and "Soldier of Love" that night too.

don't suppose I'll get "Not for You" or "Spin the Black Circle".

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 April 2016 21:55 (ten years ago)

it was the Binaural tour so we got those singles too

Neanderthal, Sunday, 10 April 2016 21:55 (ten years ago)

Did they ever say anything about Jeremy with regard to Columbine? I could imagine them finding it newly relevant after being exhausted by overplay or whatever, but could also 100% them wanting to shy away from it.

never ending bath infusion (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 10 April 2016 22:08 (ten years ago)

My review of the show.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 April 2016 20:17 (ten years ago)

well done! I looked at the setlist you all got and compared with the opening night setlist and there's barely any similarity. nice.

I'm hoping for stuff like idk "Go", "Tremor Christ", "not for You", "Last Exit", "Release", "Why Go", "Sometimes", "Hail Hail", "Brain of J", "Spin the Black Circle", "Once", "Light Years", "Crazy Mary", "I Got Id"......i can't imagine being disappointed unless they play nothing but "Stupid Mop"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 00:16 (ten years ago)

there's a new sitcom on NBC called Crowded, and i noticed that every episode of the show is named after a Pearl Jam song. that led me down the rabbit hole of learning that the show's star, Patrick Warburton, is a huge Pearl Jam fan, and Eddie actually let him pick the setlist one night in 2009. and it's got some great picks, David Puddy has great taste!

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 05:49 (ten years ago)

"Lukin" into "Porch" was a nice touch. opened w/ "Why Go". I'm kinda embarrassed at how poorly I know Ten material now but I haven't listened to it in a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally long time compared to the others.

got "Off He Goes" and "Red Mosquito" too

very heavy on the hard rockers tonight, kinda surprising. felt like him doing Lennon's "Imagine" was a bit rote - I love the song but it's been covered live soooooo many times by soooooo many people.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 06:28 (ten years ago)

I dropped off Pearl Jam after Yield (even though I really like that album), but I thought I'd give Binaural a go the other day and you know what, it's not bad!

"Off He Goes" = favorite PJ ballad

"Nothingman" is mine

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 13:56 (ten years ago)

I actually performed it in a 'band' for a one-off show in high school. my PJ-obsessed friend sang it and it was like euphoria for him.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 13:57 (ten years ago)

I am actually looking at tickets for the Jax show now. if they become affordable, I may go again.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 13:57 (ten years ago)

Vitalogy has some great ballads. 'Better Man' is great. I find it's the hoary rockers that let it down a bit.

Eddie's a real cornball too, but mostly he makes it work. I do not want to hear this, though.

Off He Goes might be my favourite PJ song. No Code definitely my favourite album, though they're all strong, tbh. Sirens off Lightning Bolt is such a ridiculous song, right on the edge of being fatally over-the-top - and yet it still works so well.

favourite Pearl Jam song is a good question... Maybe I Got ID?

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 11:30 (ten years ago)

I'm quite surprised Vitalogy won, it's the album that turned me off them after being bang into Ten and Vs. I remember it being this wilfully obscure mish-mash. I was only 15 or something, sure there's loads of good stuff going on that I didn't get.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 12:41 (ten years ago)

But y'know, I was already a Mr Bungle fan so wasn't a stranger to wilfully obscure mish-mashes.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 12:42 (ten years ago)

It's got some great tracks but it's a typical 90s eclectic 'let's do it all and mix it all up' kind of record (the kind of thing I used to love back then), but it's also really jarring. This disconnected hodge-podge of big shouty rock tracks, stoic goth-funkers, ballads and weird sketches. Def got some of their best work: 'Better Man', 'Corduroy', 'Immortality'. Not a fan of any of the rockers on here - all just sound awkward and laboured. I do like the weirdo tracks, all of them, from Pry, To to Aye Davanita. Even Bugs I used to think was teh funneh back then.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 12:52 (ten years ago)

I recall Tremor Christ was the one I liked best.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:10 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I Got ID would be in my top two or three; love the spectral Neil Young guitar solos throughout. I wrote a thing about PJ's 10 best tracks the other day for the Guardian and described the song as a grungey take on Just My Imagination; certainly, it's the best of Eddie's heartbroken-streetperson-mumbling-to-self works.

Aye Davanita is a great track in its own right, but there is SO MUCH TO SKIP on Vitalogy.

Jerry Lee Lewis: The Total Film-Maker (stevie), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:10 (ten years ago)

I love Vitalogy. "Last Exit", "Tremor Christ", "Spin the Black Circle", "Nothingman", "Betterman", "Not for You", "Whipping", "Corduroy"....even "Satan's Bed", while not a great track, has a good verse riff.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:18 (ten years ago)

Listening to it now - gotta admit the three opening tracks have all been banging.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:28 (ten years ago)

I'm just not keen on things like Spin The Black Circle, Blood, Last Exit. I like 'Lukin' though - that's Pearl Jam doing heavy rock really well.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:32 (ten years ago)

Ha well, I thoroughly enjoyed those four rockers that opened the record, now Nothing Man is on and I'm getting all yawny.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:35 (ten years ago)

I really really don't like it on No Code the way Sometimes fades out and this horrible big brute of a track follows it up. I love 'Sometimes' and 'Hail Hail' is fine; they just don't sit nicely next to each other.

draxx them sklounst (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:38 (ten years ago)

I love that!

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:45 (ten years ago)

although point taken about their rockers. They're better at what that Grantland critic called "midtempo plus"

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 13:45 (ten years ago)

Done with first listen of Vitalogy in 20 years - pretty good! Definitely far smoother/more accessible than my recollections, and for all the obviously self indulgent moments it never really drags.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 14:03 (ten years ago)

My least favourite bits were actually the two "---Man" tracks - never really liked PJ when they got too soppy.

No. They are like a tired farmer singing about tractors.

Strange, even as a hard rockin' teen, I always preferred Pearl Jam when they weren't being deliberately spiky and shouty. Bar a handful of exceptions, mid-tempo plus rockers, ballads, funky jams and weirdo outliers were what they were best at in my view. Not sure why that is.. Vedder's got a good hoarse shout but it feels strained and I never feel like the band gels very well when doing this.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 14:13 (ten years ago)

I love "Brain of J", the verse riff is one that's weirdly aggro and almost heavy metally for PJ. great chorus too.

PJ never had a lot of Zep worship, Hendrix, Neil Young, etc, were more their thing, but Yield has some songs that dialed-up the Zep a bit more. a little overboard in "Given to Fly" which is basically just the verse of "Going to California"

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 13 April 2016 21:17 (ten years ago)

yeah Jack Irons era brings out some Zep vibes

some dude, Thursday, 14 April 2016 01:35 (ten years ago)

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 April 2016 02:10 (ten years ago)

I've listened to nothing but PJ for the past two days because of this thread. Stoked for the eventual trax poll!

My #1 is "I Got Id" but seeing how only Ed and Jack play on it I may put "Corduroy" up top

bunny slopes, Thursday, 14 April 2016 05:45 (ten years ago)

those are both good candidates

I found Lightning Bolt to be a disappointment (barring the opening tracks) after really liking the previous two

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 14 April 2016 06:23 (ten years ago)

'Brain of J' is an example of an excellent hard'n'fast PJ song. For the most part I don't think they sound beefy enough to pull that sound off, but that and 'Lukin' are great.

two years pass...

In Berlin for the gig on Thursday and I’m excited like a kid at Xmas.. actually my first time in the city and I’m normally diving into the history books pre trip but all I’ve been doing is listening to their discography- from 1991-2006 not a dud I reckon. Last time I saw them was in Trieste a few years ago and they blew me away with a personal top 5 concert -.

Minister of the Pillow (fionnland), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 23:47 (seven years ago)

sorry man, i know my context is just vastly different but i have to register that i'm just legitimately blown the fuck away that someone can be in berlin or trieste and be "excited like a kid at xmas" by a pearl jam concert in 2018.

macropuente (map), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 01:03 (seven years ago)

i am right there with fionnland in spirit, i would be the same way!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 04:17 (seven years ago)

I would be excited, too. I am kicking myself that I was too swamped with work to make their London gigs a few weeks back.

Arthur Funzonerelli (stevie), Wednesday, 4 July 2018 06:57 (seven years ago)

They played here in Krakow last night. I would have gone but I have a newborn. (Not that I blame him...)

Sam Weller, Wednesday, 4 July 2018 08:49 (seven years ago)

two weeks pass...

caught the 2 recent London shows.... there's really no other mainstream rock band i can think of who can play to crowds of 20,000 most nights worldwide, and still have maybe 50% of people
know every song and for a ton of them nearly every word. it really is a pretty amazing atmosphere seeing them for that reason alone... seeing them last night and how the fuck do the vast majority of fans around me know "the words" to yellow ledbetter in 2018? it's a pretty weird thing.

anyway the show was a rare reschedule due to Eddie having voice issues last month, so they played a pretty hefty 3 hour set that ran 18 minutes over curfew (going on past events at the venue it may cost them about around £180k in fines - thanks guys) and had a ton of fan requests:

Oceans
Nothing as It Seems
Go
Corduroy
Save You
Do the Evolution
Given to Fly
In Hiding
I Am Mine
Green Disease
Even Flow
Daughter (with Dead Moon's "It's Okay" tag)
You Are
Satan's Bed
Can't Deny Me
Mankind
Whipping
Lukin
Rearviewmirror
I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty cover)
Fatal
Around the Bend
Jeremy
Mind Your Manners
Breath
Crazy Mary(Victoria Williams cover)
Porch
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
Wasted Reprise
Alive
Baba O'Riley (The Who cover)
Yellow Ledbetter
All Along the Watchtower

(that run from Satan's Bed to RVM - woah)

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 09:51 (seven years ago)

so the 1st london show only had a 9 song overlap with last night.... the first night also had

Of the Girl
Low Light
Animal
Brain of J.
Wishlist
Deep
Severed Hand
Love Boat Captain
Down
Parting Ways
Off He Goes
Sleeping by Myself
Footsteps
Why Go
Better Man
Last Kiss
Black
Rockin' in the Free World

THESE SETLISTS ARE HOT.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 09:53 (seven years ago)

argh I forgot they were playing and missed those shows so sick about it

Arthur Funzonerelli (stevie), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 10:05 (seven years ago)

That's an insane London 2 setlist.

Had my second best Pearl Jam gig in Berlin the other week - Waldbühne is such a great venue, lovely sunny day, some fun people in the line waiting and an ace set:

Wash
Sometimes
Corduroy
Why Go
Save You
Given To Fly
Red Mosquito (w/ Danny Clinch)
In My Tree
Even Flow
Wishlist
Habit
Angie (Rolling Stones cover)
Daughter (with Dead Moon's "It's Okay" tag)
Deep
Mind Your Manners
Unthought Known
Lukin
Porch

Encore:

Thin Air
Thumbing My Way
Breath
Do The Evolution
Black (with Todd Rundgren's "Time Heals" tag)
Rearviewmirror

Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd cover)
Alive
Rockin’ in the Free World (Neil Young Cover, w/ J. Mascis)

The crowd was absolutely wild too, found myself happily enough in a proper pit (Eddie gave us a 5 star review in that regard). Well worth the bruises for the next week. Berlin was p much my favourite city I've visited too.

Minister of the Pillow (fionnland), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 11:26 (seven years ago)

on a whim, listened to Yield and Binaural today while grinding through some copy-editing, possibly the first time i've given either a front-to-back listen in twenty years. unfortunately i have nothing new to say: Yield has some great singles and an overall sense of punchy focus, but the back bench of songs isn't their best, while Binaural has some great moody jams but a little too much crunchy mid-tempo rock and even less inspiration in the songwriting. "Nothing As It Seems" still stands out but otherwise i can barely remember what i just listened to.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:27 (five years ago)

wow agreed on both counts

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:31 (five years ago)

love "low light" and "in hiding" iirc though

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:32 (five years ago)

i may be alone in this but i saw riot act as a return to form at the time and looking at the tracklisting now: dang these songs are for the most part pretty good

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:35 (five years ago)

don't really get how Vitalogy won this by so much. Definitely a 50/50 album for me. LOVE the ballads and the experimental jiggery-pokery. Happy to leave the clumpy, razor-throated rockers

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:36 (five years ago)

you would ditch "corduroy"??????

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:37 (five years ago)

lol Brad i legit thought of you when i was like "if i made a Yield poll, who on ILM in 2020 would definitely show up?"

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:39 (five years ago)

plenty of songs i dig on that album tbh, even if some of them are just from excessive high-school listening that's burned them into my brain. it's just somehow less than the sum of its parts? or maybe just missing one more big centerpiece song that makes it all feel, idk, important or something. what "Corduroy" and "Better Man" do for Vitalogy in my ears.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:41 (five years ago)

yield has always felt to me like a less successful version of no code, but even that is pretty badass

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:42 (five years ago)

― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, December 7, 2020 5:37 PM (five minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

I don't lump Corduroy in with things like 'Spin The Black Circle' or 'Satan's Bed'. That's a good melodic rocker

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

i love "satan's bed" and "whipping" and it was v surprising for me to learn that ppl do not like them

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

"spin" is a little too obviously great imo lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

Yield is great! Feels slightly more mature and focused than No Code to me.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

I just don't love Vedder's hoarse shouty voice that much (I like Lukin and Brain of J though). Or maybe it's the stiff, ploddy straighahead drums on those Vitalogy rockers... I dunno

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:48 (five years ago)

re: Yield: i hear the No Codeyness in the guitar tone and the maybe looser, less radio-focused production, but i feel like that's an overall journey they were on from at least Vitalogy to Binaural. Yield feels distinct to me as kinda brighter and cleaner than No Code, but i'm not sure how much of that is me initially hearing it through the "they're back! they're rocking again! please don't give up on alt-rock radio!" marketing at the time.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:48 (five years ago)

off Riot Act I'd keep "Can't Keep", "Save You", "Ghost" and "Green Disease". "I Am Mine" is dopey but nice. That's about it.

Whereas the s/t is almost front to back winners

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:50 (five years ago)

"bu$hleaguer" is pretty embarrassing though i'll cop to that. need to revisit the s/t and backspacer which i remember as very tight records

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:51 (five years ago)

i've always loved "The Fixer," i should probably dig into whichever album that's from.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:52 (five years ago)

backspacer! "the fixer" is like my favorite pj single ever lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:52 (five years ago)

my favorite pearl jam song is "sad," which, wow, i'm still extremely mad that it's a b-side

― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, April 13, 2016 10:28 AM (four years ago) bookmarkflaglink

lol this thought just popped into my head, glad i searched the thread before repeating it. the insult of "sad" being a b-side is worse when i remember it was recorded during the binaural sessions (iirc?)

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 December 2020 18:09 (five years ago)

"Green Disease" is great, imo one of the highlights of their later work is that they seem to want to nab some of the sprightliness and economy of some of their opening acts (eg sleater-kinney, dismemberment plan, supergrass, idlewild)

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Monday, 7 December 2020 18:13 (five years ago)

Ha, the one time I saw Pearl Jam was because Idlewild was opening. Stadium show at U of MT, seats behind the stage... not ideal.

'Corduroy'is the only song I can think of that sounds like Miracle Legion AND the Foo Fighters.
It's not at all a stretch to imagine Mark Mulcahy singing it/not at all a stretch to imagine Dave Grohl writing that riff.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 18 December 2020 22:47 (five years ago)

Haha, when I caught Pearl Jam the first time they were my favourite band, Idlewild were supporting and they were my second favourite band. My Dad will forever be my hero for not only letting me skip two days of school but driving me 8 hours each way to see them as he realised how important it was for me.

And 'Cropduster' and 'You Are' get plenty of my love, Brad. Matt Cameron needs to write more damn songs.

one year passes...

Been making my way through the Pearl Jam discography recently. I haven't paid them much attention post-Vitalogy and for whatever reason have decided that now I'm going to explore the rest of it.

Anyway, I just remembered a joke that I made when Yield came out. Upon flipping the CD over and seeing Brain of J as the first track, I asked, What - like Primus Drummer of White Zombie Guitarist?

Thank you and sorry.

I'll need someone else to as I'm only just reacquainting myself with this stuff. But I recently relistened to No Code after many years and it's got me in the mood. I recall Binaural and Riot Act exhibiting this side of the band now and then too.

FWIW, I kind of prefer the remixes and remakes of the Ten songs. The 'Redux' mixes are generally better, but the single version of "Even Flow" (a re-recording with Dave Abbruzzese on drums) is definitive IMHO and the single mix for "Jeremy" is the best one they did (even though they do censor out the word "fuck").

This was my favourite US rock band in the mid-late 90s. But until now I have listened to very little past Yield.

I've read Binaural being described as their "art-rock" album. Listening now and uh, am I missing something? This is their mist straight-shooting, least "arty" album since Ten, surely?

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Saturday, 11 May 2024 09:52 (two years ago)

I love "art-rock" Pearl Jam. I'll put a playlist together

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Saturday, 11 May 2024 09:53 (two years ago)

i'd been meaning to make an 'art rock' pearl jam playlist ever since i bumped this thread in november, now that i have actually heard all of their albums (no idea about non-album tracks tho). as i said, if a compilation existed of all their attempts to be an art rock band I would buy it - such stuff definitely interests me most with them.

i wouldn't just include full songs, i'd have things like 'pry, to' and 'red bar' (or red dot or whatever people call it), short interludes which i think rather get to the point rather easily.

as for binarual specifically.. well every album between vitalogy and riot act - except yield - i have seen described as 'art rock'. i think the main thing binaural has in that regard are the roomy lengthy psychedelic tracks that are peppered throughout like 'nothing as it seems' (the lead single no less), 'of the girl', 'sleight of hand' and 'parting ways'. maybe 'rival' as well.

I think there's an argument to say Yield is one of their more experimental albums hah.

Here's an attempt at a rough tracklist for an Art Rock Pearl Jam comp, bearing in mind I don't know much past Yield. Haven't established a track order yet. Any suggestions welcome https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7gQqP8IQW2FqRYNS2moMZc?si=0MSfiOAFQGqBWNfuNC5PZw&pi=ZuS1lMpKSH6ra

The new album is actually pretty good BTW. They sound invigorated

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Saturday, 11 May 2024 10:45 (two years ago)

I recommend Who You Are and Nothing As It Seems. I know they were singles but they were 'difficult' singles

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 11 May 2024 10:48 (two years ago)

i think yield's status as a back to basics album is overstated, as such records usually are, but in terms of experimental tracks i can't think of anything that would fit except red bar and push me pull me. i get why it might seem like the least arty album in that broader sequence.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 11 May 2024 10:53 (two years ago)

I love Push Me Pull Me

Yeah I get what you mean. I dunno, Yield has a vibe, an undercurrent. There's something eerie going on under there. The best PJ does
