Palomine! okay, maybe not, but it sure does sound awesome right about now in the store. finally found a copy at the thrift store. for years i would say to myself, i wish i could find a cheap copy of palomine. I like that record. great record to play drunk by yourself. it will simultaneously make you happy AND sad.

so, what's the best netherlands release then?

could be this:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_LzOdhh8wa04/SZ_x5wars9I/AAAAAAAAAWw/obhGOQyNjFE/s400/outsiders_cq_1968_WALLY_TAX_RONNIE_SPLINTER_BUZZ_MISFIT_AMSTERDAM_NEDERBEAT_PSYCHEDELIC_ROCKNROLL_POLYDOR_TAX_FREE.jpg

or who knows, maybe it's this:

and, to be honest, my fave might actually be this:

After some googling, surprised to find that I haven't really heard a whole lot of Dutch bands beyond some of the symphonic metal bands. I guess I'd have to say maybe something by The Ex?

YIKES! how could i forget my ACTUAL favorite dutch album. or maybe its a tie with the gathering. plus, i have the american copy and the dutch copy and each has different songs on it. so i actually love some weird hybrid of this album:

But weren't the tracks that were left off the actual American album included on the 7-inch 6-song More Mistakes EP that Grupo Sportivo included inside the US Mistakes? (My EP has "Bernadette," "Disco Really Made It," "Are You Ready?," "Girls Never Know," "Tokyo," and "Rubber Gun," if that's any help.)

Also, has nobody mentioned Golden Earring yet? Or Focus? (It's hard to search, with all the image links.) If it's not cheating, I think I might take The Continuing Story Of Radar Love over either the Gathering or Grupo Sportivo albums that Scott named (both of which are great.) (How come all the best Dutch bands start with "G"?? Weird!)

Herman Brood wise, I haven't heard Cha Cha in eons, but Herman Brood & His Wild Romance (with his awesome American hit "Saturday Night," probably my favorite Dutch SONG of all time) might actually give even Golden Earring a run for their money, come to think of it.

Also, what about Shocking Blue??? (Unless somebody already said them.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

i was actually just waiting for you to mention Focus and Golden Earring.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

i don't have that EP with my copy of Mistakes! man, now i need it bad. the american version included songs - great songs - from their first album as well as Ten Mistakes.

Thijs, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

and, ACTUALLY, this is confusing, they had an EP called Rare Tracks that came out before Ten Mistakes. SO, the U.S. album Mistakes is actually a mishmash of Ten Mistakes and the album AFTER Ten Mistakes called Back To '78. Back To '78 has:

Girl

Bernadette

P.S. 78

Tokyo

I Said No!

Real Teeth Are Out

Are You Ready?

The Booby-Trap Boogie

Blah Blah Magazines

One Way Love (From Me To You)

I'm A Rocket

Shave

The Pogo Never Stops

Bottom Of The Class

The Single

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

so, really, all i need is Back To '78 and maybe that first EP. and then i would just need the american EP that came with Mistakes for that Disco song, i guess.

You NEED the Gruppo (anti) disco song, Scott! It's one of my favorites by them: "Disco really made it! It's yucky and I hate it!" (And yeah, I agree about their later LPs. I have two around here, but they never really clicked for me, either. Not gonna get rid of them, though.)

the best thing about Pop! Goes The Brain was the pictures inside of the band dressed like various new wave genre bands. adam & the ants, etc.

and my favourite album by a band that may or may not count as Dutch seeing as how I can't find any lineup information online and the singer has a Northern English accent (but they're at least part-Dutch):

Hey, a fellow Dutch-jazz fan! We'd be remiss to leave out Willem Breuker Kollektief. They've got a ton of albums, but I'll nominate "Bob's Gallery" because I have that one. Also, if Michael Moore counts, I dig those Jewels & Binoculars albums, not to mention Clusone 3. And what about Jaap Blonk and Braaxtaal?

46 NRA – Leaded (1997)

I don't know this one but I have an NRA album from five or six years ago and it's pretty fine for the genre. I could vote for Das Oath if they count. I rep for Gnaw Their Tongues everywhere I go. 'Wrede' by Gore is their best imo and I dunno why it's not been reissued. Dunno about actual albums but on the right day I could probably be convinced that Clone Records is the best thing to come from Holland. That's all my thoughts on Dutch music right now I think

Toss my salad?? - Niles Caulder, Monday, September 28, 2009 11:49 PM (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

Since nobody else will, I'll put in two cents for Frites Modern's Veel, Vet, Goor En Duur. The Nine Circles album's pretty great, too. Quando Quango kind of counts as well: half Dutch, and formed in Rotterdam. But it's probably C.Q or an Ex LP.

Michael Train, Wednesday, 30 September 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

one of my fave death metal albums is by Dutch band Acrostichon. they had a female lead singer who was definitely the fiercest woman death singer i've ever heard. they had one more album after this one, but i never heard it. and their singer, corinne, never played with anyone after that, i don't think. a couple of the acrostichon dudes ended up playing in Master and also started another band (outburst) that i've never heard.

MaresNest, Thursday, 1 October 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, that is a strange omission, hadn't noticed that.

My personal favorites would probably be Pestilence (Consuming Impulse), The Gathering (Mandylion), Vengaboys (The Party Album), Johan (Pergola), Bettie Serveert (Palomine), Daryll-Ann (Weeps) and Brainbox (pre-Focus Akkerman band, which I imagine scott and xhuxk will probably like too, right?). Also, I hate Herman Brood and I don't think I've ever heard Moontan. I have the Gruppo Sportivo album, played it once years ago, really liked it and haven't played it since.

music and beer.

You guys are great at humor, I'll give you that. :-)

StanM, Thursday, 1 October 2009 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

Did De Fabriek do any classic stuff? I keep seeing the name about, but haven't dug too deeply.

@StanM: I forgot, your women are more beautiful too! Three strikes, we're out ;) (my great grandfather is Belgian btw; probably where that sense of humor comes from).

Thijs, Thursday, 1 October 2009 10:41 (fifteen years ago)

Some of my favorites:

Pestilence - Testimony of the ancients
The Gathering - Souvernirs
Caesar - Leaving sparks (an underratied indie-album IMHO, recorded by Steve Albini)
The Spirit That Guides Us - The sand, the barrier
God Dethroned - The grand grimoire

This is the all-time best Dutch albums list of Holland's premier music mag OOR from last year:

No Kayak no credibility!

What was up with UDS calling people "Ducks" all the time? Was that some kinda early 90s dutch slang that everybody used, or did they just make it up?

Good stand-up, Americans (kingkongvsgodzilla), Thursday, 1 October 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

If this were the old ILX and I could still tweak my user name to make it thread-appropriate, I'd change "Vön" to "Van" just for this one...anyways, I'll rep for Shocking Blue At Home. (I like Scorpio's Dance a lot too.)

Cue 'cheesy' joke (finally!).

Good one about the ducks categorising UDS, what was up with that?

Thijs, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

Ayreon ( pronunciation (help·info)) is a project by Dutch composer and musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's musical style derives mostly from heavy metal and progressive rock, but combines them with genres like folk, classical and electronica to form what some call a completely new style of music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, each represented by a unique vocalist.

Is that one of his albums?

the guy from Ayreon e-mailed me to say that he thought my review in Decibel of that album was really funny and that he appreciated it. which shows that the Dutch have an EXCELLENT sense of humor.

scott seward, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

^^^I saw that post again recently and chuckled heartily. It was one of the funniest emails I've seen reprinted, a total compliment (and complement) to the review

based on that alone I totally root for the guy and his mighty mighty sixth extinctions

Is that one of his albums?

Nahw, just i'm-gonna-use-a-phonetical-english-version-of-my-name-so-as-to-not-confuse-my-potential-international-fanbase lolz from a fellow Dutchman with an even more ridiculous name.

Thijs, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

I mean based on 'liquid eternity', 'connect the dots', 'ride the comet', the opening track of disc 2 whose name I forget, and 'the sixth extinction' alone, it's a super li'l record

should probably be practising shorthand (country matters), Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oohh Scott where can that review plus his e-mail be read?

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

It's probably not the best Dutch album ever but I am quite fond of B.G.K.'s Jonestown Aloha.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 October 2009 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

As are the already mentioned Ex, Rondos and Gore.

At last! Waited so long for this thread...

Did De Fabriek do any classic stuff?

They're heading at their 30th anniversary and are awfully productive, but if a classic needs to be picked it's probably the first vinyl:

More almost forgotten gems of the (early) eighties:

Michel Banabila – Des traces retrouvés 1
Flue – Vista
Kiem – Kiem
Ton Lebbink – Luchtkastelen
Mekanik Kommando – Bay the moon
Mo – Mo
Nexda – Nexda
O.R.D.U.C. – Pink and purple
Odal – Against nature
Suspect – Above suspicion
The Tapes – Party
Tent – Uncertain and wild
The Visitor – Black and gold
The Young Lions – No news, strange rumours

... And absolute personal fave:

I don't know what to make of that list. No Ex in the top 200, though plenty of Golden Earing. And Australia's Saints make it into the top 150!
