Best 70s FUNK Album

Funk kicked arse didn't it? Yet most of these albums never make a Mojo/Q/NME type list.
Will include jazz-funk as jazz dudes viewed it as funk and not jazz.
I'm sure some albums you like didn't make it so please just vote and discuss the ones that did.

voted Funkentelechy

some of the selections seem arbitrary (Superfly and Roots, but no Curtis?) (Music of My Mind, which is damn near Stevie's least funk-oriented 70s album, but nothing else by him?)

wit and wisdom (snrub 'n' tug remix) (The Reverend), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Does anybody mind if I ban Geir from this thread if he posts to it?

Alex Quebec (WmC), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

*crickets*

wit and wisdom (snrub 'n' tug remix) (The Reverend), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Will include jazz-funk as jazz dudes viewed it as funk and not jazz.

...seems off, to say the least. I would figure most took more of a "still jazz, but also funktoo" attitude.

wit and wisdom (snrub 'n' tug remix) (The Reverend), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah but theres only 1 jazz-funk album in the list so who the fuck cares hehe.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Voted On the Corner (but my funk education is badly lacking).

xpost lol

Alex Quebec (WmC), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Mr Hardy you can always use this thread to check out stuff :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely!

Alex Quebec (WmC), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

oh and yes, a strange stevie album to include (proved if geir votes for it) , but fuck knows why Innervisions isnt a funk album on RYM.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Unless it is but geirs theory of well known albums getting some deliberate low marks to exclude it from top lists is right.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Weird omissions and substitutions aside, this is a pretty stellar list of records.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

And Curtis is my fave Curtis album too so its a strange exclusion. I suppose since its my poll i could've just put it in but oh well too late. Plenty of great stuff to vote for.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, why start this thread now? My funk knowledge is even worse than my jazz knowledge and yet I love both and argh, overload of lists of possibly great records I may love.

I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

at least you have Spotify to check it all out unlike the american ilxors.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

a strange stevie album

but 'love having you around' is quite a monster, no?

butchered in the spooky twilight (stevie), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

I had copied and pasted the list to save it for a week or 2 before running it but with geir putting loads of polls up to counter the ones he didn't like I just felt compelled to do it now.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

- Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson Bridges (1977)

YUM!

Moka, Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

I actually don't know that one. Must check out!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

weird - but not bad - to see jorge ben and *especially* tim maia so high on that list

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Generally no funk fan, but still more good stuff on this one than the jazz list. Voted "Music Of My Mind" (wonder why they consider that album funk and not the other Stevie Wonder ones?), but the two EWF entries are also great. And, well, I have nothing against most of George Clinton's albums either.

Where is Prince?

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Rejuvenation got my vote as a personal fave AND I love EVERY track.
for an objective best (if such a thing is...), Riot and Mothership Connection seem on a higher level than the rest of the list. of the missing ones, Innervisions and Backstabbers would have brought the heat.

Paul, Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

maggot brain vs on the corner, for me

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

Riot and Mothership Connection seem on a higher level than the rest of the list.

Maggot Brain is easily on a par with those.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Unless it is but geirs theory of well known albums getting some deliberate low marks to exclude it from top lists is right.

"Innervisions" comes out as number 1 if you try to create a list for all kinds of "rhythm & blues", which should serve to disprove that theory.

Also, well known albums will usually not be victim of that unless they are from the noughties.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

(surprisingly?) at least one candidate for best funk album of all-time is pre-70's: Sly & The Family Stone's Stand is a contenda.

also, on the 70's again, most funk fans would claim Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On and Let's Get It On (slowjams can be funk too!).

Paul, Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

i suppose it stops the default best known album on the list running away with it because voters havent heard anything else on the list.
xpost

I consider What's Goin' On as funk but again see what I just said above.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

But I didn't exclude them, RYM user definitions did.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

Another great list, almost impossible for me to decide. Went with Funkentelechy, but there are at lest 10 other albums I could just as happily have gone for.

That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, Innervisions and What's Goin' On are like the twin whatnoughts of R&B albums ever (critics would add Riot). with those in it's kind of a shut-out although strictly from a FUNK perspective you could go another direction. on that tip, Mandrill's Composite Truth should be here too.

Paul, Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

sorry, every other funk disc in creation, but Sly's Riot will always be my choice.

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

According to http://rateyourmusic.com/rgenre/set?album_id=5892, 6 users have voted for there being an element of funk in "What's Going On" while 25 users have voted against.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

What's Going On is a soul album to me, it doesn't really have what I think are the characteristics of funk: extended jamming, focus on the bassline and groove, less focus on vocals and melody, etc. Plus the strings, WGO definitely has soul strings. I thought Curtis was excluded from the list for being a soul album too, but they did include Roots, which isn't really that different from Curtis, except that Curtis is better. Superfly excluded, I don't think Curtis Mayfield ever did proper funk, he was always rooted in soul.

Tuomas, Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

Mandrill Is is one of my favourite albums ever and if I had cheated by doing a RYM top 40 and addiny 10 of my own that would be in it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

Mind you maybe I ignored an album or 2 to get nos 48 49 and 50 in :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

though it might have been 80s albums i skipped, i forget. I did leave dirty mind and the time out as they were 80s albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

But I hope people will now check out the albums they dont know in this poll rather than just voting for 1 they do and forgetting about it until the results come in.

Shakey's head will explode when he sees all these albums to choose from btw

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

I think this one was more successful than that damned jazz poll thats JINXED.
JINXED I tells Ya!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

a hoy hoy what albums in this thread have you heard? so i can give you spotify links to those you need to hear.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

1 Curtis Mayfield Superfly (1972)
3 Sly and the Family Stone There's a Riot Goin' On (1971)
18 Sly and the Family Stone Fresh (1973)
26 Stevie Wonder Music of My Mind (1972)
27 Isaac Hayes Shaft (1971)
48 Ohio Players Skin Tight (1974)

^^^^all that i've heard. Of course I have heard plenty of parliament-funkadelic/james brown/kool and the gang/war from various other places though.

I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

James Brown's The Payback is essential listening for anyone even remotely interested in hardcore rap. it's kinda like late-'80s hip-hop--as conceived some dozen years earlier--in sound (and mood).

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

Glad you know the Ohio Players album, all of their post westbound stuff is on spotify, but check out the westbound era (the stuff they did with Junie) if you can find it elsewhere.
No Funkadelic on Spotify annoyingly so get that "elsewhere" but here is Parliament - Mothership Connection
http://open.spotify.com/album/734MC4wQsfNWsg9HLTrUoN

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah Ioannis is right, most of these albums have been sampled to death in hip-hop. Others who know more about hip-hop will recognise the samples when they hear them.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

Cheers! I am now going to have this thread, the two jazz ones (5 runs and RYM), the best remixes of the decade and the two Best of 70s Doom threads bookmarked until forever. I don't think I'm ever going to get around to listening to any other music at this rate.

I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

and you still have the 80s,90s and 00s doom threads to come!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

Cymande is one to check out for sure. "Bra" is a classic break, but the song itself is just amazing. Pure joy.
The whole album really delivers.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know if Rhino's The Funk Box is available on Spotify, but that's probably the best introduction to the world of hard '70s funk as can be imagined.

a single man owns you (Ioannis), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Superfly. Curtis is one of my all time favorite musical geniuses and Superfly is more consistently awesome than Roots. After years of being underrated, On the Corner now seems to be pretty overrated by many people.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

P-Funk are their own worst enemy on this; predicting massive vote split. Riot likely winner, not that that's a bad thing.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for The Meters' Rejuvenation. Some of the other albums on the list may have catchier songs or more adventurous sounds, but at that point in their career The Meters had distilled funk to its purest essence. Plus "Hey Pocky A-Way" has the most awesome and groovy drum riff ever.

Tuomas, Sunday, 4 October 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

the meters are great.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

i went for Spirit of the Boogie

probably not the BEST, but definitely under-rated

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

My favourite Kool & The Gang album is Wild And Peaceful but the early live albums are smokin'.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 4 October 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

Any of them, but mostly one of these:

8 Funkadelic One Nation Under a Groove (1978)
14 Betty Davis Betty Davis (1973)
22 Earth, Wind & Fire All 'n All (1977)
26 Stevie Wonder Music of My Mind (1972)
37 Parliament Motor Booty Affair (1978)
42 Kool & The Gang Wild and Peaceful (1973)
46 The Isley Brothers The Heat Is On (1975)

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2009 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

I always wonder why people pick one nation over the earlier funkadelic albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

I always wonder why people pick one nation over the earlier funkadelic albums.

The title track could be their best individual track, even though it stylistically varies from the rest of their best work.

I voted Sly's Fresh anyway, so what do I know about an artist's best work?

Zachary Taylor, Monday, 5 October 2009 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

Moka, Monday, 5 October 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'd rep for half of that list tho.

Moka, Monday, 5 October 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson Bridges (1977) is on spotify. I need to check.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I always wonder why people pick one nation over the earlier funkadelic albums.

The preference could be as simple as an affinity for disco/R&B over rock, no?

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2009 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

maybe but usually it's because they haven't heard the early albums in my experience. Plus one nation is still the most rock of the later period anyway. So why not pick Uncle Jam?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

Sam how did you get on with Mothership Connection? You need to liveblog while playing these albums i think.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:34 (fifteen years ago)

Uncle Jam is, imo, just barely enough filler to buttress "Knee Deep."

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't listened to it yet. Spent the morning trying to make it through the Best remixes of the '00s

Have just opened spotify though, so liveblogging may happen. (Going to attempt listening to as much of the list is available. Guess i'll start with MC.)

I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

Uncle Jam is awesome apart from that godawful ballad holly wants to go to california which is the worst funkadelic song ever. Wash your mouth out!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

Uncle Jam's my least favourite Funkadelic. :( But even the worst Funkadelic LP...etc.

Good stuff up there indeed (I've got about 40) but nothing really jumping out immediately. And yeah, there's maybe a dozen I wouldn't call funk per se (even tho they'll have one or two tracks that fit the description). But I guess that's RYM-users for you. This'll require some thought...

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Suggest Banned (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

Mothership Connection - This album is all over the place isn't it? I understand how it's been sampled to death, each song offers almost limitless possibilities. So far, so great.

I'M LEGALLY A MIDGET (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

can we please put a cap on poll options, 50 is ridiculous, there won't be a single voter who's genuinely familiar with every last album on the poll, which fucks up the whole concept of the poll a little don't it. 20 is fine. 50 is silly.

Mothership Connection Pt. 2: The synths sound like they are farting on Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples and it is putting me off. Rest of the album is great though.

I've heard 49 of them!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

and j0hn, if i left out albums someoone would moan i left out their fave. Plus there's probably a post on here with someone still doing that (apart from geir)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

no one would say on a canonical best album ever list or p4k list that no one had heard all 50 options :(

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

curtis and stevie are more funky soul than funk IM(puristy)O.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

actually half these albums are, though its a big overlap so hard to say either way i know.

voted Bootsy's Rubber Band Stretchin' Out in Bootsy's Rubber Band (1976) anyway. stupidly funky album.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 5 October 2009 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ funk purists!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

no one would say on a canonical best album ever list or p4k list that no one had heard all 50 options :(

I would! I think once options are past 15 or 20 at the outside the poll becomes a pretty meaningless exercise. And while you've heard 49 of these (and have them all to-hand in mind I'm guessing), Herman you gotta admit that your own passion for lists & rankings is a (charming!) idiosyncrasy - I think you are pretty voracious with must-hear-all/poll-all, right?

I'm just complaining because I have come around to participating in polls but an SOP of 50+ items in a poll has me thinkin "hide polls is the better option," because the participation is going to be limited to a real intense subset of listners

I sound like Tuomas on a sugban thread I know though so that's enuf outta me

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

lol "listners" an accident, but one which I'll stand by

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

no j0hn feel free to comment. But for every one ilxor who says there's too many options there's 2 who say "but you left out..." it's a no win situation. So may as well poll em all and people can check out what they dont know. Which is the point of me doing a jazz and a funk poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

plus do tell us what you think about the albums you do know!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

Also if there's only 10 options then the amount of participants will be less , in theory, than one with 50, as it should increase the amount of posters who like and will discuss more albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think I am even going to vote or look at the outcome of the pool tbh. It is just a list of records I might want/will to check out and talk about.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

^^^I know the problem is not enough people act like this.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

xpost - right, but the discussion itself is less likely to lead somewhere, owing to the breadth of its subject at that point - it's similar to having a thread whose subject is "music" imo - focus is the friend of discussion, to me.

for me funk is about Mayfield & Funkadelic/Parliament & James Brown & I love a lot of later stuff like ConFunkShun & the Bros Johnson but EWF the most all-time of this list so if I were voting it'd be for them probly

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

It could have been any early Funkadelic album though.

Marco Damiani, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

I think I've heard all of these except for one of the EWF albums and the Booker T

the taint of Macca is strong (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 October 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

Once I thought of EW&F as a straight-up pop act and not a funk act, the worlds of wonder that are the string of albums from Spirit thru Powerlight opened up for me.

Though, to be fair, almost all of those albums have ample funk cred.

I think Earth, Wind & Fire may have been shunned by funk purists because of their clean, non-greasy sound and immaculate arrangements, but I think those are not negative things, rather than what made them special. Just listen to the synth and horns on Jupiter and say that it's not funky:

Though my favourite album by them is Raise!, which is an underrated disco gem:

(I love how over the top everything is on their late 70s and early 80s albums! They're Egyptian astronauts, no need for groundedness.)

EWF were way ahead of the thumb piano curve (mbira if you will) on their burner "Bad Tune" as well.

I wouldn't rank it as my fave by them, but "Raise" is still a very underrated EWF gem. More synth disco than funk though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 October 2009 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I dunno EWF is kinda blind spot for me - I've heard a bunch of it but don't own any. Its not that they're bad per se just that yeah they were slicker and shinier and tighter than I usually prefer it. I like my funk greasy and grimy (late period P-Funk is kinda an exception, but they were always weirder than EFW).

Ok, so it's alright. A bit too smooth at times but when it gets into the groove, it is pretty great. Will listen again. 'Just Freak' sounds like if it was made by ESG or the JBs, it would have made some pretty classic hip-hop singles imo.

Funkadelic - Lets Take It To The Stage
Hi-ya! {"oh yeah" played backwards}
Hey Sloofus, (yeah!) tell us something good, let's take it to the stage, sucker
Have no fear, (get it on!) MacFunk is here. Ha!
Doin' it to the max
Slick Brick! How's your loose booty?
Laughin' atcha
Let me tighten it up
Get it on
Yeah

Everybody funking and don't know how
They shoulda seen the bull when he funked the cow
He funked her so hard they saw some smoke
He said, let's get in the bed and funk like folks
Laughin' at ya (ha!)
Funk used to be a bad word

Chorus:
(sung by the group, interspersed with stuff from George and others)
Sittin in the woods upon a log
Finger on the trigger
My eyes on a hog
And I sat back.
Laughin atcha!

(Say it loud!)
Sittin in the woods upon a log
(I'm funky and I'm proud)
Finger on the trigger
My eyes on a hog
And I sat back
(Talking 'bout you the Godfather)
Laughin atcha!
(Godmother!)
Sittin in the woods upon a log
(Grandfather! Heh!)
Finger on the trigger
(Fool and the Gang!)
My eyes on a hog
And I sat back.
(They call us the funk mob!)
Laughin atcha!
(Dig!)
(Get it on)

Little miss muffet sat on her tuffet snorting some THC
Along came a spider, slid down beside her
Said: what's in the bag bitch
She said I'm laughin' at ya, ha, ha!
(Hey Fool and the Gang!)
Funk used to be a bad word
(Let's get it on! Let's take it to the stage)
Motherfunk you
Hit it!

Sittin in the woods upon a log
(Good god!)
Finger on the trigger
My eyes on a hog
And I sat back.
(Earth, hot air, and no fire)
Laughin atcha!
(They call us the fun

Alice In My Fantasies
{G Clinton, G Cook}

Hey baby, be my dog!
Owwww!
Alice in my fantasies, uh
Promised to do all kind of freaky things to me
Said she would, uh, suck my soul, if I'd lick her emotion
The freak said I would even owe her my devotion

She said she'd, uh, cover me with, uh, strawberries
And pretend that I'm a shortcake
I said, "Uh, not by the hair of my chinny chin chin"

OWWW!!!
Yeah!!!
Hey!!!

Alice in my fantasies
Promised to do all kind of things to me
Said she would, uhh, suck my soul if I'd lick her emotion
And that I would even owe her my devotion

I saidm "Uh, lady, be my dog and I'll be your tree
And you can pee on me."
Mama said never eat yellow snow
So away we go!

Huh, huh, huhh, huhh, huhh, huuuuuuhhh, huuuuhhhh!!!! Heyyy!!!

Be my dog!
Hey!
Baby
They call it mental masturbation

Super Stupid
{Eddie Hazel, Billy Nelson, Tawl Ross, G Clinton}

Super stupid bought a nickel bag
Thought it was coke, but it was skag
Super stupid did a one and one
Then his eyes begin to water and his nose begin to run

Oh! stupid with your ups and downs
Your maggot brain, your grins and frowns
Super stupid you're here today
You've lost the fight and the winner is fear

Did-did-did did-um

Whoa, hey

Standing On The Verge of Getting It On
G Clinton, G Cook Bridgeport Music

spoken
Hey lady, won't you be my dog
And I'll be your tree
And you can pee on me!
(x3)

We will do you no harm
Other than pee in your afro

Hey lady, won't you be my dog
And I'll be your tree
And you can pee on me!

{sung}

Even if you don't dig it
Don't mean it's not the thing or thing to do
It could be just for you

Even if you don't feel it
Right now don't mean someday it'll turn you out
You'll be out of sight

You really shouldn't ought to fight it
The music is designed to do no harm
It's just for you

With just a little bit of effort
I can, and well we might, just turn you on

Even if you don't admit it
The time for change is here and here we are
We're just for you

Stick us in your ear and dig us
One time, one time, one time, one time and see
We're just for you

You really shouldn't ought to fight it
The music is designed to do no harm
We're just for you

With just a little bit of effort
I can and will we might just turn you on

Music is designed to free your funky mind
We have come to help you cope
Out into another reality
You will be
Through our music we bring you hope

Us is what time it is

People, what you doing?
Standing on the verge of gettin' it on
Really gettin' it on
(x3)

Song out tonight
Oh, my soul is out tonight
There's a song out tonight
Y'all, come on

There's a song out tonight
Oh, my soul is out tonight
There's a song out tonight
Y'all, come on

(one more time!)

There's a song out tonight
Oh, my soul is out tonight
There's a song out tonight
Y'all, come on

Us is what time it is

Even if you don't dig it
Don't mean it's not the thing or thing to do
Could be just for you

You really shouldn't ought to fight it
The music is designed to do no harm
We're just for you

People, what you doing?
Standing on the verge of gettin' it on
Really gettin' it on
(x2)

People, doing, yeah?
Standing on the verge of gettin' it on
Really gettin' it on

People, what you doing, yeah?
Standing on the verge of getting it on
Really getting it on

Standing on the verge of getting it on
Really getting it on

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

I also like those wordy, pretentious sounding lyrics like "Children of Productions" and "Better By the Pound" et al

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

"Chocolate City"
Uh, what's happening CC?
They still call it the White House
But that's a temporary condition, too.
Can you dig it, CC?

To each his reach
And if I don't cop, it ain't mine to have
But I'll be reachin' for ya
'Cause I love ya, CC.
Right on.

There's a lot of chocolate cities, around
We've got Newark, we've got Gary
Somebody told me we got L.A.
And we're working on Atlanta
But you're the capital, CC

Gainin' on ya!
Get down
Gainin' on ya!
Movin' in and on ya
Gainin' on ya!
Can't you feel my breath, heh
Gainin' on ya!
All up around your neck, heh heh

Hey, CC!
They say your jivin' game, it can't be changed
But on the positive side,
You're my piece of the rock
And I love you, CC.
Can you dig it?

Hey, uh, we didn't get our forty acres and a mule
But we did get you, CC, heh, yeah
Gainin' on ya
Movin' in and around ya
God bless CC and its vanilla suburbs

Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya! (heh!)
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
What's happening, blood?
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!

Yeah!
What's happening, black?
Brother black, blood even
Yeah-ahh, just funnin'

Gettin' down

Ah, blood to blood
Ah, players to ladies
The last percentage count was eighty
You don't need the bullet when you got the ballot
Are you up for the downstroke, CC?
Chocolate city
Are you with me out there?

And when they come to march on ya
Tell 'em to make sure they got their James Brown pass
And don't be surprised if Ali is in the White House
Reverend Ike, Secretary of the Treasure
Richard Pryor, Minister of Education
Stevie Wonder, Secretary of FINE arts
And Miss Aretha Franklin, the First Lady
Are you out there, CC?
A chocolate city is no dream
It's my piece of the rock and I dig you, CC
God bless Chocolate City and its (gainin' on ya!) vanilla suburbs
Can y'all get to that?
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Easin' in
Gainin' on ya!
In yo' stuff
Gainin' on ya!
Huh, can't get enough
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Be mo' funk, be mo' funk
Gainin' on ya!
Can we funk you too
Gainin' on ya!
Right on, chocolate city!

Yeah, get deep
Real deep
Heh
Be mo' funk
Mmmph, heh
Get deep
Bad
Unh, heh
Just got New York, I'm told

Great website btw, has been bookmarked.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Sam the best p-funk spin-off album btw is this:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9f5c8lXo1U0/SH7Pr-jjp4I/AAAAAAAAAS8/9SGmVEEGeU4/s400/Mutiny+-+09.+Frontcover.jpg

RC: This was the first album from the Jerome Brailey-led group. The name of the band was a reaction how Brailey perceived the George Clinton-run P.Funk camp, and he slams him throughout the album. He had hoped to recruit more members from P.Funk for this album (especially Bernie Worrell, who had less and less input at that time), but the only former player he got was sax man Darryl Dixon. Despite that, Jerome and Co. produced three excellent funk albums. His rock influence is apparent here, with the album having a heavy sound. But he also understands the use of the 'one', with the dance songs being super funky in the mold of Bootsy. The album's only weakness is lyrical, but there are enough interesting concepts to hold up the album. But the lyrics aren't the focus here, the excellent music is. Any fan of Jerome (who was onboard the P.Funk train from 1975-77, producing many classics, including his signature "Give Up The Funk") or super heavy funk in general should seek out these albums. The most remarkable thing about this album is how good Jerome Brailey's vocals are and how funky his arrangements. Despite the barrage of insults, Clinton said in later years that he would have been happy to have this album on his own Uncle Jam label!

"Go Away From Here" is a mid-tempo song that is immediately noticable for its funky bass and distorted vocals. There's a nice dramatic buildup with the addition of a clever horn arrangement and a muted but wailing guitar. The song talks about faking the funk and such. "What More Can I Say" is another mid-tempo song in much the same mold, with the same muted guitar, great singing and another excellent horn arrangement. "Lump" is a hot dance-funk song. Jerome uses his funny, higher-pitched voice to dis Clinton ('Lump, lump can you cut the funk?' and 'Thinking you did something, realizing you ain't done a lot') and the Brides in a humorous fashion. The great slap bass keeps things moving. "Funk N Bop" is another fast funker, also amusing in the same vein. This one has a lot of great lyrical hooks, like 'The longer the stroke, the deeper the fill' and 'Sworn to fun, loyal to none'. The band absolutely locks in on this one, it's just a rock-hard funker. "Burning Up" is a mid-tempo funk ballad with more good vocal arrangements. "Voyage To..." is a more guitar-oriented song with whispered lyrics and crisp drumming. "Everytime You..." is a straightforward ballad with a strong guitar presence that highlights Jerome's singing. "Romeo" is a weird mid-tempo song with a funny chant and a more subdued lead vocal. The synth is the focus here, creating a strange tension. The beat is steady and holds the whole thing together.

This album is out of print and somewhat rare, but it's available as an import from P-Vine. The cover shows Jerome on a beach, dressed as a pirate, recovering a treasure chest. An inside sleeve illustration has Jerome making Clinton (whom he calls 'Lump') walk the plank. The whole thing is pretty funny. Ace Records also apparently plans to reissue this album soon as well.

It's not in it. Death to disco!

If "All'n'All" counts as funk, "That's The Way Of The World" does too.

From "I Am" onwards, EWF were disco though. Good disco.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

well your beloved RYM doesn't have "That's The Way Of The World" in it.

Apparently has funk only as a side genre. Now I did one vote for funk as a main genre too. :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

It is ranked as the second best disco album ever though, only beaten by "Off The Wall".

Come on, you know you don't like the "rock" aspect of funk and would hate to see shows full of guitar solos.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

I'm obviously no great fan of the rock offshoots of funk, either, but I'll admit Maggot Brain is unfuckwitable.

"Live It Up" is relentless, tho. I'd rather listen to it any day.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

That singles list is a stitch, in light of the EW&F discussion. "September" in the top 10, wtf?!

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

Come on, you know you don't like the "rock" aspect of funk and would hate to see shows full of guitar solos.

But you were talking specifically about the Isleys, who were never particularly "rock". I definitely would've wanted to see them live in the early 1970s.

While we're on the subject, this live album by EWF is dope stuff, and should prove to the doubters that they could be greasy and unpolished and funky too:

http://www.scubb.com/images/products/5099750761328.jpg

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

But I was talking about the mid 70s when their shows were very rock (ballads excepting) and they had fiery guitar solos.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

OTM!

This was to be Glenn Goins' first major project away from the P.Funk Mob after he quit, but he passed on before he was able to complete it. But his brother Kevin went on to finish it, and many of Glenn's original vocal and musical parts were left on. Glenn also wrote and produced many of the songs, along with Jerome Brailey, who had also quit by this point. We'll never know how good it might have been had he lived, but what we have is a brilliant, unique funk album. Glenn's abilities as a vocalist, musician, producer and arranger were only hinted at in his brief-but-potent stay with the Funk Mob; but the classics he left behind with Parliament ("Bop Gun" and "Mothership Connection" being only two examples) and his role as lead singer in live performances show how important he really was.

His only real weakness was as a concept artist, which made him a perfect fit with Clinton but limit the ideas on this album. While everything is perfectly sung and played, the lyrics are very basic and the musical ideas not exactly being revolutionary. Given that, the album is excellent: there's a side of kick-ass, shake-booty funkers that would make Sir Nose dance. Then there's a side of skillfully produced ballads carefully designed for a romantic evening. It's a commercial album with perfect integrity, with a sound somewhere between Bootsy's Rubber Band and Mutiny. It's a cross between funk and rock influences that also acknowledges a heavy debt to 60's soul.

The quality of the music is excellent, led by Kevin on guitar, with Greg Fitz (now of Bootsy's New Rubber Band) also coming up with some creative keyboard melodies. The drumming and bass playing are also superb across the board.

"Funk With A Big Foot" is super heavy and funky, with excellent use of pauses and stops, making it very danceable. Jerome Brailey is excellent here, and the keyboards provide the proper flavor. The chant, "Stop! Get down! That's what it's all about" is infectious. "Funk With A Capital G" is another hot funk tune that commands you to wiggle, with doubled up bass and guitar. "Funk N Roll" has a hot guitar riff, deep rolling bass and effective, funky handclaps. It recalls other P.Funk, making "Cholly" references and having band members doing Bootsy impersonations. This song sounds a lot like Mutiny later would. "Working On The Building" is a brilliant fast funker with torrid bass playing and scorching sax (from Daryl Dixon, who did the sax solo on "Flash Light"). More doubled up guitar/bass arrangements, with hot wah-wah guitar and slap bass stylings make me agree: 'And Quazar make you dance'. "Your Lovin' Is Easy" is a Bootsy-ish ballad, also recalling Rick James a bit. The guitar and bass recall some Ike Hayes songs. "Love Me Baby" features the excellent voice of Lady Peachena; the music is pretty commercial, as though this was calculated to be a crossover hit. "Savin' My Love..." is a discoish/ Barry White fast ballad, and as such, it's very corny. Good bass playing, though. "Starlight Circus" is a dreamy, ethereal soul tune. "Shades Of Quaze" is a mellow instrumental, dominated by horns and then wah-wah guitar.

The album is out of print, and very rare. A CD version is available, though only as an import. You may expect to pay a lot of money for this one, but it's worth it. The album is a black and white design with the word 'Quazar' exploding like the Big Bang. Photos of all band members are included.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

Sweat Band

TK: This was the first release on the Uncle Jam label.

RC: This was a fantastic project, mostly masterminded by Bootsy, that involved a number of P.Funkers. It was like a Bootsy album with almost no vocals from Bootsy; a Parliament album with two instrumentals; a Funkadelic album that was light in theme; a Brides or Parlet album that emphasized the musicians. In other words, it was a whole lot of good things rolled up into one.

"Hyper Space" is an excellent instrumental that spotlights Razor and Michael Hampton. "Freak To Freak" is an outstanding dance tune that is driven by great percussion, a fine guitar riff, a heavy bottom, and let-it-all-hang-loose singing. "Love Munch" is an amazing spotlight for Maceo, with the background of a light, Latin-sounding beat. He just goes off in solo after solo, then joins in with the rest of the band. The percussion here is also extremely sharp. "We Do It All Day Long" is interesting, with the short intro that emphasizes lyrics and the beat, and then later the longer version that gives each musician a turn. Great singing from the Brides/Parlet, too. "Jamaica" has Bootsy doing some very funky thangs with the space bass, interesting grooves from Razor, great drumming, weird chants and outbursts, and finally some singing from Bootsy. "Body Shop" is a more standard funk number that features good backup vocals from Garry Shider. The highlight is an incredible guitar solo.

The album is out of print, but is available as an import on CD. It'll cost you something like $25-35 to get it, but it's certainly worth it to any fan of Bootsy or Maceo. The cover shows a man's head getting water splashed on it. Lyrics are included with the CD version.

I have Rhenium, which is some kinda repackaging of Osmium with some tracks replaced (or something). I like it but isn't the funk archetype that Mothership Connection is. Its more like a late period Beatles album lolz

*snaps*

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 9 October 2009 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

it is tho, knowhutimean? It takes that British psychedelic approach to having a bunch of radically different songs next to each other, each an experiment/reflection of some other genre, often done with a bit of goofiness or nostalgia or nastiness - it veers wildly in tone, lots of weird production touches, the gang is dressed in ridiculous outfits on the cover, etc. Except its run through the prism of black American culture rather than British music-hall shit or whatever

tylerw, Monday, 12 October 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

via wikipedia:
Alternate and significantly different versions of at least ten songs from the album are known to exist. In 1991, Sony Music, by then owner of the Epic catalog, accidentally issued a sequencing of Fresh on CD featuring alternate takes of every song except "In Time", which remained unchanged. Sony allowed the alternate version to remain in stores to be bought up by fans and then later issued the standard 1973 version of the album. However, the mix-up sparked debate among fans over which release was superior. When Sony BMG reissued Fresh in CD and digital download formats for Sly & the Family Stone's 40th anniversary, five alternate mixes were included as bonus tracks. These tracks are extremely similar, if not identical, to the alternate, accidental 1991 release. The alternate version is known to be very accessible in Japan, while it is very scarce in the U.S..

tylerw, Monday, 12 October 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Dr. John was pretty great in the end. I was just as apprehensive about the Eddie Hazel - AMG review mentions funk-metal and he covers one of my least favourite Beatles songs, bloody I Want You (She's a boring arse blues riff played loudly for 7 minutes while nothing really happens) - but it was aiight as well.

Oh yeah, Quasar, I'll have another listen to that Sweat Band album

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

Sweat Band is probably my favorite of the obscure P-Funk sideprojects - I def. prefer it to Mutiny and Quasar

the taint of Macca is strong (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Mutiny's 1st album is still the pick of the bunch for me.

(oh my god this bootsy record is fucking amazing.)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah post-80 it gets a little sad... there's flashes of good stuff after tho (Groove Is In the Heart, obviously, and I like a fair chunk of '97's "Fresh Outta P University")

Remove This Vile Tweet (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Ok I move on up the list. Skin Tight! I love other Ohio Players, although I think I mixed this album up with another I've heard upthread and said I've heard it already. (in uni i had the opened cover of the vinyl Honey on my wall, best cover ever). Unfortunately there isn't much OP on spotify but this, Honey, compilations and embarrasing looking albums from the 80s and 90s.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

Westbound-era stuff is the best imho - Funky Worm!

Remove This Vile Tweet (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

Someone has told me what Westbound-era relates to and I was too ignorant to remember. Back to wikipedia I guess.

Only two tracks in but I am liking it v. much.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

its their record label. Westbound was also Funkadelic's label. When the Ohio Players jumped ship (I forget to where) they lost one of their key members, keyboard player Junie Morrison, and their sound changed a fair bit.

Remove This Vile Tweet (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

(Morrison later hooked up with P-Funk himself, and is all over their later 70s/early 80s records)

Inexplicably, Funky Worm is not on spotify, so I will go digging post-Skin Tight.

same here for a Mutiny album, which I'll even take over Eddie H's solo LP (except "What About It?"!) and possibly... even the first 2 Bootsy's, except it's the 2nd Mutiny LP that I love so much: Funk Plus The One baby!

Maggot Brain: Wow, it's nothing like what I expected. Kind of psychedelic? Everything up until the 'hey lol we can put in every sound effect ever' last track is the nuts.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

of course it's psychedelic. they were acid fried hippies making acid fried hard rock.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

the last track has a much better version on 'Toys'. its absolutely brilliant and you wonder why it wasnt chosen for Maggot Brain or its reissue with alt versions of tracks as a bonus.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

James Brown's individual LPs are often a total mess (tho there are some fantastic front-to-back ones, like The Payback) and Get on the Good Foot is no exception. there's a handful of great tracks, but the rest of it is all over the map with pointless covers, filler, etc.

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm starting to feel that as I make my way through the list. I'm thinking of downloading a bunch of them, deleting the filler and being left with some small tight albums are ridiculously great.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

... and then you have to start working your way through the Bohannon albums

^^^kinda the apex of Parliament there

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

I feel you on the issues with the James Brown discography - I have a bunch of different stuff from a variety of places, some comps, some actual LPs, some stuff from Star Time (which is a really, really great box set, altho by no means comprehensive). Then there's the JB singles comps that have been coming out. Those are exhaustive, but again there's a bunch of crap no one really wants or needs on there. He recorded so much, sorting through it all is serious work, although not without its rewards, obviously.

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

I think within the past two weeks, Parliament have become my favourite band ever. This is terrific! Kind of weird underwater party feeling.

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, the James Brown discography does look quite intimidating and will be left for another time, other than the real cream of teh crop.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

most of the original P-Funk LPs have hilariously awesome sleeves - tons of detail, lots of little jokes, fantastic artwork with little comic strips or one-panel gags, etc.

These Funkadelic albums are odd, huh? I don't really know what I think of them, considering I know fuck all about psychedelic shizz and all that hendrix geetar etc. I think I like it but Parliament >>> Funkadelic so far, by a country mile. Will spend more time with them though.

Standing on the Verge of Getting it On: (Westbound 1974)
* "I'll Stay"
Crucial Conflict - "Hay"
De la Soul - "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa"
K-Solo - "Long Live the Fugitive"

Damn, it is none of these. the-breaks.com sucks.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

It's on a par with Maggot Brain and Free Your Mind. Some people have those 2 as their faves some have Standing...
Of course others like one of the other Funkadelic and some people have only heard One Nation Under A Groove and prefer it (it's nowhere as near as good as any of the Westbound albums)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

Sexy Ways! This isn't really funk (like JB is funk) but it is great.

I will give the other albums a go but I don't want to OD on P-Funk so after this I'll just listen to the ones I encounter on the list I haven't heard. Until after I have made my way through of course, then I will have many happy decades with these bros.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

That list doesn't have anything different on that tune. I'm sure there is something kind of recent that used it and it is bugging me. Not enough to do much about it, I'll just get drunk and forget about it.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 October 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

why are funkadelic albums always gotta have 10min+ wanky guitar solo pointless jam things?

That's one reason I like Parliament more than Funkadelic (though I'm haven't listened that much to either). I'm not into "rock", so extended psychedelic guitar solos do nothing to me. Parliament has always sounded more "funk" to me.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

This album is cool but it seems odd not having any vocals. Not even the occasional yelp or talking.

Also, why is this poll just restricted to the 70s? Never noticed that before.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

Listen to Rejuvenation or Fire on the Bayou, they're even better, and with vocals.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

The Meters may have not been the most far out band in funk, or the best songwriters, but they certainly had the best groove. And that's why I voted for them.

I wouldn't vote in a 70s funk poll without Prince. It's the same as doing a 70s funk poll without Parliament/Funkadelic.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

Whoops, I meant I wouldn't vote in an 80s funk poll without Prince.

Are "For You" and "Prince" that good?

xpost ah darn.

Mark G, Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

well i suppose if you have 50 albums in total, having 10 from prince is okay (as well as about 3 from the time).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

This top 50 list has 11 albums from Parliament/Funkadelic, btw.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

can someone do an 80s funk albums poll? (but without prince cos he would take up too many votes)

the precise reason it's limited to the 70s. Too many ilxors would just have voted for the only album they've heard and prince would've walked it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:11 (fifteen years ago)

That's a bit unfair

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

it's true though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think people would vote in a funk poll if Prince was the only funk they've ever heard. If that was true, EWF would win this poll, because that's the one everyone's heard.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:43 (fifteen years ago)

... that's definitely not true.

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, so what if everybody does vote Prince? It's democracy in action!

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:47 (fifteen years ago)

And it's not as though he wasn't making some of the best funk of the '80s.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

some of my favorite--obscure by the above list apparently--funk/funk jazz/funk-r&b albums not in the top 50 (hey, I love P-Funk, but editing demands that not ALL can be on the top 50; for example: Maggot Brain, great album, but known more for its genre-bending black psychedelia than for the outstanding funk vignettes that fill the album. Can that make it The Best Funk Album of the 70s? I don't think so.)

Maulawi--by Maulawi Nururdin (1973) Strata Records
African Rhythms-1975 (or) Space Jungle Luv-1976 - Oneness of Juju
The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend (1970)- Baby Huey & the Baby Sitters
Vibes from the Tribe-Phil Ranelin (1976)
Darkness, Darkness-Phil Upchurch (1972)
Coffy (OST)-Roy Ayers Ubiquity (1973)

And where's Hancock's Sextant or Head Hunters? Miles's Jack Johnson?

I'm not quibbling with the list--ok, I am, but not really--but why not expand the list by restricting P-Funk to 3 really consistent choices (Cosmic Slop would not be one of those) and James Brown/the J.B.'s to a similar quota? Is it lack of imagination, or a lack of breadth to the funk in your library?

Soren Kierkegaard Existential Light Orchestra, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

not anyones library mayne, the list is stolen from rateyourmusic iirc.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

JB and P-Funk are the pillars of the genre and have multiple classics to their names, I don't see the need for equaninmity here... altho I hvae no reason to vouch for RYM lists, which seem fairly stupid. This one's pretty good though. Also weird to complain about Maggot Brain being categorized as a funk record and then nominate the Baby Huey record, which is surely just as weird and diverse (albeit in a different way)

I forgot my mantra (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

Went with "World is a Ghetto," which has to be one of my favorite albums. "Four Cornered Room" + "World is a Ghetto" are such a heavy ride together that could put you in a real frame of mind for head-in-oven action but overall I find the experience of the album to be very enriching. Something cathartic about it. Plus the songs on it are just damn good. They could be done on a comb & wax paper & sung in Portuguese & they'd still be good.

we are normal and we want our freedom (Abbott), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, hey, I'm not at all suggesting those few I listed as being better than what's listed. I missed the RYM tag. Just suggesting some other choices/voices. And I'm not arguing against Maggot Brain, just sayin' it's not Funkadelics funkiest is all.

You recall correctly on the Pete/Phil split. Chicago Guitar Axis. Pete was also on the Phil Cohran Artistic Heritage Ensemble albums from the late 60s, which included the guys who went on to be the Pharaohs & then after their one album several were hired by EWF's Maurice White to become the Phenix Horns.

the horrific ballad holly goes to california

I totally love this song fwiw and I am generally not into P-Funk's ballads (other exception = Wizard of Finance). I love that its kinda lounge-y, there's the audience noise, it's just Bernie and George's off-key, sleazy vocal.

Saying you prefer One Nation Under The Groove, (which Junie's the dominant force on), to Maggot Brain (which Bernie is a major driving force) as you prefer Bernie to Eddie is a bit strange.
The middle westbound period is where Eddie is the dominant force (Cosmic Slop,Standing On the verge, Lets take it to the stage)

It's not like Maggot Brain is all like the title track. It's also the most diverse album out of the early and mid period albums.
Bernie is all over most of those albums.
As tom d says, bernie(along with eddie) is pretty much out of the band by 78.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

What can I say, everyone should own this album. "Maggot Brain" may be Eddie's finest moment ever. The lyrics are particularly poignant and clever, especially "Can You Get To That" and "You And Your Folks...". Bernie really becomes a dominant force on this album, with his organ adding texture to the acid/R&B guitar stew. Did I mention the beautiful singing? No Funkadelic album would be complete without a freakout song, and "Wars of Armageddon" fits the bill here. It sounds like they pulled out a sound effects album and got funky with it. "Maggot Brain" was written when George asked Eddie to think of the saddest thing he could, to imagine his mother dying. George faded out the rest of the band when Eddie played this, because they weren't playing as well as Eddie, and the result was excellent. The album is Funkadelic at its best in that it's impossible to predict. It starts with a psychedelic solo guitar piece, moves on to a gospel-inflected soul-stirrer, continues with a hard-rock organ-driven tune, swings toward a politically charged soul-gospel piece, soars with one of the first heavy metal tunes in history, moves back into the political realm with a touch of taste and a horn influence, and concludes with a freakout as bizarre as anything ever recorded. This kind of heavy eclecticism would be seen on several of the next Funkadelic albums, but this one is my favorite.

"Maggot Brain" is the greatest instrumental the band ever recorded, owing everything to the genius of Eddie Hazel, who makes listening to the piece an exhausting, terrifying and exhilarating experience. "Can You Get To That", yet another rewrite of a Parliaments song, starts off with acoustic guitars, giving more of an emphasis to Bernie and his organ, with some of the best singing and lyrics on the album. "Hit It & Quit It" is a Worrell showpiece, featuring his vocals and dominated by that heavy organ sound. Hazel's solo at the end is excellent. "You And Your Folks..." is a sequel of sorts to "I Got A Thing...", with impassioned lyrics about the poor and the irresistible 'yeah, yeah, yeah' chant. "Super Stupid" is a high-powered Hazel metal tune, with a still-tasteful if over-the-edge swooping solo. "Back In Our Minds" settles the whole angry stew down, with Environmedian J.W. Jackson playing jew's harp. He would open for Funkadelic on many occasions, doing a stand-up routine. Just when everything has settled down, they finish it with the utterly bizarre "Wars of...", a song that has a great Hazel jam, a ton of sound effects, commentary on urban society, lyrics that include 'more power to the peter, more power to the pussy, more pussy to the peter', and much, much more. Buy this album now if you don't own it!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

also from the motherpage

RC: One Nation may be the best album of the last twenty years. The addition of keyboardist and songwriting mad genius Junie Morrison reinvigorated Funkadelic, as he cowrote almost every cut. His presence is indelibly stamped on this album, regarded by many as Funkadelic's greatest. Michael Hampton also shows his full maturity as Funkadelic's chief guitarist, shining on all-out guitar assaults ("Who Says A Funk Band...") to more delicate, almost jazzy work ("Grooveallegiance"). The album is a smorgasborg of different styles, with dance floor workouts, peerless funky rock, bizarre freakouts, grinding instrumentals, and much more. It starts off with #1 hit "One Nation", a somewhat commercial but still superb dance classic. It combines great singing with clever polyrhythms. The jazzy, subtle "Grooveallegiance" follows, with a brilliant, understated Hampton solo intermeshing with new bassist Rodney "Skeet" Curtis' smooth grooves and Junie's funky keyboards. "Who Says A Funk Band..." acts as a kick-in-the- ass rocker, with clever lyrics hidden in the guitar-propelled stew. The utterly inexplicable Funkadelic take on all things scatological, "Promentalshit..." follows, with Clinton punning on and on, removing 'constipated notions.' Don't forget, 'Fried ice cream is a reality.' Ray Davis takes a rare turn at lead vocals, making "Into You" a brilliant declaration of separation from the sickness of society. "Cholly" is one of those amazing self-referential funk anthems that is again brought up to a higher level by great lyrics and solid bass playing. Returning to more traditional Funkadelic roots, the band gets into a sharp guitar-driven chant, "Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet." This is the first tune that appears on the extended play 45" that came with the record but now comes on the CD. The next is a redundant but harmless instrumental version of "Promentalshit...". The album is capped by a frantic version of "Maggot Brain", performed by Michael Hampton. It fits well into the album's context.

This is an unusual brand of theme album, in that the theme is fairly loose, yet helps all of the songs mesh into a coherent whole. Essentially, it's a declaration of Funk interdependence. The call is out to be freed from old notions, old stereotypes (musical and otherwise), and the decay of society. Funk is declaring its own power and seceding from the rest of society, forming One Nation Under A Groove, where everyone can do their own thang. Only by keeping an open mind can this be accomplished. The concept, to one degree or another, is present on all of the tracks, but you're not beat over the head with it the way many "concept" albums might. Instead, each song can be appreciated just as much by itself than with the rest of the album.

One Nation was P.Funk at the height of its empire. Most of the side- groups had released material, and the musicians in question were pumping out hours and hours of music in the studio. This would eventually water down the music, but not here. The clarity and coherence of the album's vision owes a lot to Junie Morrison, ex-member of the Ohio Players, whose eclectically bizarre yet funky solo albums showed that he was a perfect fit for P.Funk. Michael Hampton's talent also brought the album to a new level, with a number of clever pieces that were well-placed in the guitar tradition of Funkadelic.

GZ: Here Funkadelic reaches its glorious peak; guitars, bass, rhythm, and horns come together with serious lyrics to make a killer dancefloor combination. One Nation is solid gold, from the anthemic title track, with it's accompanying latin-feel "Grooveallegiance", "PromentalShitBackWashPsychosisEnemaSquad", and statements of purpose "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" and "Cholly". The album used to come with a bonus 7" that had killer live versions of "Maggot Brain" and "Think! It Ain't Illegal Yet".

in the maggot days they still hadnt really found their sound as such imo - you can tell they were kinda trying it out and being indulgent just to see if they could but sometimes they didnt really have the ideas to merit all that indulgence - i swear half those songs could have been shorted quite a bit. junie was maybe the best thing to happen to them really - he gave them a better, sharper songwriting backbone that they didnt really have until that point.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 9 November 2009 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

hmm where did that "is" come from

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 9 November 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

so recently my ipod was stolen and I lost a bunch of stuff, and over the last few days I've been trying to rip/download the funk stuff I didn't have backed up, and I'm struck by how funk is really not much of an album genre. Like in a lot of cases I don't want entire albums from certain acts, I generally am looking for a subset of their material, the real ass-shaking stuff. There are very few albums that adhere to the fairly constricted vocabulary of funk all the way through, and the results of this poll I think bear that out... I think I can count on one hand the number of funk albums that are straight up funk all the way through (actually the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Mothership Connection)... Which is why, for example, even though JB is undeniably one of, if not THE, prime force in funk as a genre, he doesn't even get into the top 10 here. Dude never cut a consistently great record. Even his best (imho, the Payback) has got a couple ballads on it. I think those folks complaining about Maggot Brain not being "funky enough" to merit winning need to remember that pretty much EVERY album nominated here has its unfunky moments. And this was really common - you'd have these bands that would record some totally barn-burning dancefloor numbers, but albums were often padded out with pointless ballads or other space-filling genre excercises.

Anyway, the upshot of this post is that Herman I would really appreciate it if you could re-send me that Psychasouladelic mix comp you made awhile back, cuz that has a bunch of stuff on it that I wanted without having to hunt down individual albums...

its ok, i'll do it at the weekend, it will just take ages

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

See now me, I liked the diversity of the various EWF or Mandrill or (esp.) P-Funk albums - I never considered the non-funk tracks to be filler, but more like an attempt to cover all bases or sheer what-the-hell experimentation.

(Of course, those JB albums were indeed pretty obviously full of filler, especially those double ones. How many times did he re-record "Please Please Please" or "Cold Sweat" anyways?)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

I like diversity too and I like "Maggot Brain", I just don't think of it as a 'funk album'

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

It's a fucking great album but if someone were to say to me, "Recommend me a funk album", I would not say "Maggot Brain"

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'd call it a funk album in that it was a FUNKADELIC album, and they always called themselves a funk band, even if parts of it sound less like what 'funk' came to mean later in the decade.

(On the other hand, it was the late-50s/early 60s hard-boppers who first used the term in song titles, wasn't it? So that kinda shoots down my argument...)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

is it just cuz of the title track? Because there is plenty of straight-up funk on MB otherwise - Can You Get To That, Hit it and Quit It, Back In Our Minds, Wars of Armageddon is kinda a afro-cuban funk rhythm...

hoth as fuck (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

"Back In Our Minds" isn't really funk, I don't know it is though!

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

its slathered with typical Funkadelic weirdness but I don't think the underlying song structure/rhythm is all that different from something you'd find on an Isley Bros or War album from the same period

hoth as fuck (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 12 November 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Thursday, 12 November 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
