I've come to think that Pitbull track is the most fun pop hit of this year. Foxx is good too, could do w/o the rest, haven't even heard the Miley.

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:02 (fifteen years ago)

some good songs here. "blame it" is my #1 of the year but i was really rooting for pit to hit #1 so i'm gonna vote for that. also yes it's a remarkably fun song, the verses are mad lol & carefree.

drake is also def in my top 10 and miley might be too. taylor song is dope. could do without jay.

there's a blap for that (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

also really shocked that it took pitbull until this joint to figure out that he could invert "cockpit" to "pit's cock"

best time for the Pitbull track is when you are dancing with someone you really want to blap and singing it back and forth with that person

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

do you personalize it and say "when i put it in your mouth i got you sayin duh-nuh-nuh-nuh"

Taylor Swift for sure, probably my song of the year (whatever that really means).

Some great stuff here but Drake!

"blame it" just edging "you belong with me" - the latter is, incredibly, only like the 5th or 6th best song off taylor's album.

they're all good pop songs except the jay-z though.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 8 October 2009 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

I feel like I should love the Pitbull song, but I can't stand it. Tempted to vote for "Run This Town" just because of the unintentional hilarity of Ye's verse (there was a very flat-chested girl in my high school they called "bee stings") and Rihanna's hook. Really though, Ms. Swift deserved that number 1 spot.

The Pitbull song is so much fun when it comes on the radio, but I think making number 1 would have drawn undue attention to its slightness.

Tim F, Thursday, 8 October 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

Taylor just over "Blame It" and Miley. I can't figure out why that Pitbull song annoys me so much. Was OK with it when it first came out and now I almost always change the station when it comes on.

this is kind of amazing, three of my absolute favorite singles of the year are up here. gonna have to go with taylor over foxx; i prefer the nicki minaj version of "best i ever had" so that works against it. pitbull, miley and jay are all boring 5/10s

jackie off the chain (k3vin k.), Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

MAZELTOV

as strikingly artificial and perfect as a wizard's cap (HI DERE), Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

Am I the only one annoyed that the title isn't "I Got a Feeling", but rather "I Gotta Feeling", which is ungrammatical even taking account for the colloquialism?

xp: "Hotel Room Service" is so annoying and awful

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

i always notice it but it never really annoys me. when there are a hundred other songs out there already called "i got a feeling" and "i've got a feeling" it's kind of shrewd to come up with a more unique variation imo.

some dude, Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

i don't mind "boom boom pow" but "i gotta feeling" sucks and i don't get why the mazeltov bit is meant to be so good. weirdly for such a wilfully obnoxious group their album is just...solid, vaguely hooky but not particularly memorable or charismatic pop.

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

The thing that makes the "MAZELTOV" part so great is Fergie's cracked-out "DRANK!" that occurs right before it.

i actually like that pitbull more than 'run this town' but timbo is spot on about overweighting it.

r|t|c, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

Is there a reason we're all supposed to hate "Run This Town" btw?

Tim F, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago)

'imma be' is a perfect example of the vague cynical/selfdeferential processes that come across to me as forever going on in the mind of will i am. (i'm not saying the switch in the middle is a pinnacle of avantitude or that will i am is some sort of fascinating, marmoreally inscrutable secret auteur, but he's just interestingly difficult to psychoanalyse compared to your average innit.)

xp in a popchart context nah not at all really; in an irritated haze of thwarted history of jigga kinda tedium i can fathom it. are you more at a "oh nice, jay has a new album out i shall get round to checking that" stage? tbh i tend to have it down as a rihanna song anyway.

r|t|c, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

Exactly it's a rihanna song, I barely notice jay on it.

wait do you like "imma be" or hate it?

Tim F, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

even as a Rihanna song it kind of sucks though imo, like 30% of the song is just her going "heeeeeeey" in the dreariest way possible

some other dudes, and obviously no Peter Hook (some dude), Monday, 12 October 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

as strikingly artificial and perfect as a wizard's cap (HI DERE), Monday, 12 October 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

erm the first half of 'imma be' i find stupefyingly useless, but then the drop is like um whoa and by the time i'm hmmm-ing at end of it i can't really remember where i was on the page. i...guess... that means i like it?

as strikingly artificial and perfect as a wizard's cap (HI DERE), Monday, 12 October 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

so it's kind of odd that the one detail I immediately picked out of "Meet Me Halfway" is the "Maps"-esque guitar, right

as strikingly artificial and perfect as a wizard's cap (HI DERE), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

the one time i sat thru the album i found it so overstuffed i couldnt really begin to pick stuff out, but now i'm putting on 'meet me halfway' out of context it's great! feeling it more on a gwen stefani/cyndi lauper tip than karen o but okay.

r|t|c, Monday, 12 October 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

There's a direct quote from Cyndi in there. (Big massed background vocals on BEP = guitar solo from "Time After Time".)

Leaden beat, awful rapping from dudes who used to be good-to-virtuosic, the whole dreary Rihanna "heeyyeeeyaayeeyaay" thing, general induction of depression.

I mean it's not like it's the greatest song in the world or anything but on a poll with Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus on it, pretty much any terrible Jay-Z song is going to come across well let alone one that's just decent.

some dude, Monday, 12 October 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

wikipedia

The song is a remix of "75, Brazil Street" by Nicola Fasano Vs Pat Rich, which itself samples "Street Player" by Chicago. For the release by Pitbull, the sample of "Street Player" was replayed by Mark Summers at Scorccio Sample Replays. The replay has since become the most successful usage of any sample replay in history.

some dude have all the son (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 October 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

replaying a sample is just an interpolation, and there have to have been loads of interpolations that have been more successful, so who knows what that's about

some dude, Monday, 12 October 2009 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

I think what they're trying to say it's the most successful song with a "sample" where, instead of using the source recording, session musicians have rerecorded the selected hook and that new recording was used in the track. Whether the success claim is true or not, I don't know.

on a pure technique level bar for bar yeah he's by no means anywhere near the greatest (careerwise maybe but that's a whole different thing) but he still used to be a hell of a lot better than he is now.

some dude, Monday, 12 October 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, and my point is really that I have always thought Jay-Z is enjoyable enough but has been consistently overrated. I don't think he's had some massive deterioration in quality; I think people have gotten tired of the one thing he does, which is mutter into the mic and say "uh-huh" a lot.

forgetting what jay-z sounds like or how constipated his ad-libs sound now, it's undeniable that if you read his lyrics on paper with your own voice that they are empirically better than his lyrics now, by miles even. it's not even arguable. not even the biggest jay-z fan in the world would argue it. the rest of us find him more intolerable than ppl who still jock him, and on top of it he's not even making good pop songs anymore. sure, he's old but he's still "important" and there are still tons of critics who give him a pass (cf 'american gangster') that it's still worth talking about.

My main opinion was "I like 'Run This Town' and it's certainly a better song than the boring Taylor Swift song and the godawful horrible Miley Cyrus song."

My baseline opinion on Jay-Z is "he's a decently-talented dude who blew up, got super overhyped and now is getting backlash" and there's no real connecting narrative to the comments I've put on this thread surrounding his career because I do not have a Jay-Z thesis.

mad dome beyond thunder (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 12 October 2009 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry for calling you a jackass, I just thought the comment that was in responce to was really condescending, not that either of us hasn't said anything more so as the argument has progressed. Btw, I don't recall ever saying anything in support of Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus, the latter of whom I've never knowingly heard, so keep on strawmanning.

he's also really lost his sense of humor. to me he comes off as if his verses are SAYING SOMETHING when really they're just formless and rambling. he's always been self-serious but he lost the other part of his personality & music that really balanced that out. "run this town" is just the sort of thing he's aim to t-bomb, think that he had t-bombed, when in reality he just revealed himself to think that he is of higher intellectual value because he wears expensive shoes.

I should note that in no way could I mount a spirited defence of Jay-Z or Kanye on "Run This Town", it's just that the reality of the song seems mostly inoffensive rather than awful.

Contextually i'm all for dismissing jay-z as a has-been, but it's not like he's been hitting them out the park at any point in the past six years so getting worked up about dude having fallen off feels a bit like fighting old battles

Finding Rihanna's singing obnoxious is something i can understand, but I went from disliking "Live Your Life" to adoring it on similar grounds so I can deal with Ri here.

"hey Miley Cyrus is awesome" nonsense has absolutely nothing to do with this, and I still haven't knowingly heard her or ever defended her or Taylor Swift, so you are arguing with yourself there.

Tim: The thing is.. Jay-Z as a technical rapper has been on a downward slide since the beginning of the decade (you can even tell he's doing a lot less fucking around with rhythm on The Blueprint than he had been in the late 90s, although that album is much more consistent than his previous few) and as a lyricist since he took three years off. His falling off isn't some thing that just instantly happened, it's been very gradual. Even mediocrities like "Show Me What You Got" and "Blue Magic" have a lot more life to them than "Run This Town".

basically all the things are you're saying i think is what ppl like about it. it may be obvious but it feels good to say it sometimes.

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

but again that's why you prolly wouldn't like a lot of mainstream country music

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

(i'm guessing, what the hell do i know)

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

im really hesitant to lump taylor w/ country music but that's an old topic

we beat so many gimp (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

i guess that there's a lot of stuff that i find ridic on the radio and on the mtv or whatever, but most of it i can get down with because it's fun. that taylor swift song isn't fun. it reaks of fat girl at exurban prom who hasn't figured out that she would be awesome if she forgot those fucking jocks. those types of people disgust me.

(and yes i am drunk)

ok see suburban america does not disgust me like that. i understand the disgust, and felt it at the time, but this doesn't have to looked at from such sort of slanted queer theory standpoint. sometimes a girl's just a girl

(no i'm not drunk)

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, i love proms ffs

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know, i am in the mood to look at everything from the slanted queer perspective. mostly because i am a slanted queer.

Bobby Wo (max), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

what is wrong with my grammar tonight

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:27 (fifteen years ago)

i mean no, that was more my drunk coming out. love people of all sizes. it was more the vision in my head.

my bach penises and their contrapuntal technique (the table is the table), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:34 (fifteen years ago)

so taylor swift makes u hate sad fat girls

is that kind of like how rufus wainwright makes me hate sad gay boys?

surm, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

maybe.

i mean, i really have nothing against fat girls. in fact, i find fat girls more comely than skinny girls. when i was still having sex with girls, i pretty much only had sex with bigger girls. mostly because i think they're hot.

and no, i'm not just saying that. that's da truth, ruth.

Hey, here comes the guy who lived in the suburbs his whole life to say that 90% of the people out there have nothing to do with the stereotype you're making, kthxbye.

table did point out upthread that his dislike of Taylor Swift isn't only due to his preconceptions of her audience, it's also because she's an "ugly bitch"

Britain's Favourite Carp (I DIED), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

if only taylor swift could be a fat chick instead of merely appealing to fat chicks, table is the table might like her

history maybe (Lamp), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 06:13 (fifteen years ago)

table is the table, with all due, you are really not acquitting yourself well here. these kinds of arguments always reflect poorly on the person making them.

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

taylor swift does not code remotely fat to me

i'm also really glad that the auto-playiong willennium is hidden behind the cut now

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

has nobody else figured out how to embed autoplaying youtubes, or is there some implicit mutually-assured-youtube-destruction policy that only Whiney is breaking

dyao, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 07:46 (fifteen years ago)

get one (1) bookmark and avoid all autoplaying youtubes
