lindstrom & christabelle (aka solale) - real life is no cool

take all this with a grain of salt because im a certified unrepentant lindstrom stan.

a dozen listens in and i genuinely think this is as strong, if not stronger, than WYGIGT or II--in totally different ways, though. those of you (jergins) turned off by masturbatory jams will dig on this, i think--much tighter and more formal than his last couple (the magnificent not included), but not without classic lindstrom wooze. lot of moroder/summer in this (duh) and i think also post-chic edwards & rogers.

high points for me: this badass sort of drunken gina x stomper called "lovesick" (actually sort of reminds me of that NERD song 'lapdance,' lol) and the album closer "high and low" which is totally reminiscent of thousands of songs that ive heard but couldnt name right now (almost like a funkier sally shapiro? but less italo? includes guitar solo btw)

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

OK, OK, OK... I will check it out. Because Lindstrom totally blows my horn and the idea of his schtick combined with female vocals would be just about my idea of heaven - but it all comes down to how much of the noodling has been cut down on because I'm an unrepentant spaceprog-noodle fan.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i kate id guess that youll be way less into this than WYGIGT or II based on what i know about your taste and the reasons you like lindstrom--this is way more disco; like i said the reference points here are more donna summers shit w/ moroder and 80s edwards and rogers than vangelis and gottsching (notwithstanding the fact that one of the songs is a vangelis cover)

still id be interested to hear what you think about. just b/c its not as noodly as the other stuff doesnt mean that its totally free of noodle--and its still sort of sloppy in that purposeful lindstrom way.

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Hey! I know that I'm originally a spacerock/kraut/drone head, and I came to Lindstrom from that angle, but I'm certainly not adverse to a little disco, especially of the more cosmic Italo end. The only thing I've got is that Music In My Mind track that was on the Smalltown Supersound On Fire comp from Plan B. Which I like, but I'd really like a lot more if it was about 3 times longer and went off into phased-out-heaven.

I mean, I hugely love girlypop, so the idea of Lindstrom doing a take on 3 minute girlypop disco songs is really kind of intriguing. I will chase down more of it tomorrow at work with a good connection.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

Has this leaked? I read it's not coming out until jan. 2010.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

promo copies went out last week so its probably only a matter of time

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

To be honest, I've been wanting Lindstrom to drop a straight dancefloor-orientated cosmic disco album for some time now and I'm therefore really looking forward to this.

Matt DC, Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Does this sounds anything like Run, the last song off the first L&PT album? That has always been my favorite song my them. I am excited to hear this.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I thought he tweeted that he'd put the whole album up on their MySpace, but maybe that's clips or something.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

But, to be perfectly honest, I'd be happy if he just made a straight-up cover of Steve Hillage's Green album but, erm, that's just me.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

(I would say something about offering to be his Miquette Giraudy in this project, but, erm, I've learned to keep my lustful outbursts to myself on this board)

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah jacob run is a definite antecedent to what hes doing here--the song wouldnt sound out of place on the album, even if it is a little less 'disco' than the rest of it

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Now I'm really excited about this!!

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 18 October 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm really glad she's changed her name, mostly because I wasn't sure how to pronounce 'Solale' and I'm relieved I no longer have to try.

Matt DC, Sunday, 18 October 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

fyi you pronounce it "christabelle"

Bobby Wo (max), Sunday, 18 October 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

I like the name "Solale" better. Way more mysterious.

threesome dude (The Reverend), Sunday, 18 October 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

Really cannot wait to hear this, I think it's got the potential to be the best album Lindstrom's been involved with.

Roger Sánchez Broto (vain_bowers), Sunday, 18 October 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

how's it compare to "let it happen"?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 October 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah count me in the camp that prefers Run and Let's Practise to WYGIGT-style noodle, i'm stoked to hear this

jabba hands, Monday, 19 October 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

xp the vangelis original or the version they already did?

theres a version of their cover on the album--not the same as the one thats already been released as lindstrom & solale. i prefer the earlier, solale version, but maybe just cuz it hews closer to the vangelis original, which id take over both versions of the lindstrom cover

Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 19 October 2009 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

the cover

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 19 October 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

the version on 'real life is no cool' is a) shorter and b) sort of more aggressive; the synths are foregrounded on a way theyre not on the OG (at least the one ive heard) and it doesnt have that great sort of bubbling/boiling over quality that the 9-minute "solale" version has

at least thats what i think--havent listened to the long version in a minute

Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 19 October 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm also in the camp that wants to hear more of a straight-up disco album. Something like a bunch of tracks similar to "Let's Practice" would be amazing!

t (tricky), Monday, 19 October 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

WELL YOURE IN LUCK MY FRIEND

Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 19 October 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

Excited about this, I thought (the original version of the cover of) "Let It Happen" was fabulous and like it more than anything on WYGIGT/II.

Tim F, Monday, 19 October 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

yall i hope im not blowing this up for u guys too much but i think this is FIRE as they say, it is the REAL DEAL so u are right to be excited!!

Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 19 October 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

this sounds good:

There will also be a second 12" with Baby Can`t Stop remixes from The Idjut Boys and Prins Thomas.

mizzell, Monday, 19 October 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

baby can't stop is another fave of mine, those synth-brass stabs are so rad, just the most perfect split btw obviously synthy and sort of brassy

Bobby Wo (max), Monday, 19 October 2009 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

lookin forward to this one, bigtime.

racist of the falling leaves (haitch), Monday, 19 October 2009 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if 'baby can't stop' is the untitled demo i heard in a mix about two years ago... really sparse apreggiated synth line going up and down?

no, no way

RAPTOBER (sic), Monday, 19 October 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

OK, I have just found that L&PT track "Run" on Spotify - and wow, OK, I'm going to start anticipating the hell out of this album if it is in the vein of this. The big heavy stomping bassline plus the wibbly wubbly arpeggiated synths plus drifty female vocals - if it goes in this direction then this could be my new favourite thing ever.

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 October 2009 09:39 (fifteen years ago)

OK, and to make this even sweeter, there's an Aeroplane remix on the MySpace...

::falls off chair with happiness::

satsuma laroux (Masonic Boom), Monday, 19 October 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

the Aeroplane dub remix is even better!

Kaiser Size, Monday, 19 October 2009 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

"keep it up" is such my jam. reminds me of the donna summer version of "state of independence"

psychgawsple, Monday, 19 October 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

This is amazing. So sharp and chunky and R&B! Final track is perfect.

Tim F, Monday, 26 October 2009 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

Single out today. With Aeroplane remix. (rolls over and waggles arms and legs in air)

However, I haven't listened to it yet as, erm, I'm listening to the Fever Ray RA podcast first.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Monday, 26 October 2009 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

Oh god.... Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane Dub Remix) - WHY OH WHY COULDN'T THEY HAVE LEFT THE VOCALS IN?!?!?

if they had, this would be, like, remix of the year...

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Monday, 26 October 2009 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the version I have, which has been knocking round since the start of the year, has vocals on it. I'll need to check though.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 October 2009 12:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it does have vox

lex pretend, Monday, 26 October 2009 12:17 (fifteen years ago)

If you have that Aeroplane (ha ha, I just totally subconsciously typoed Aerolplane oops) remix with vocals, I'm a-coming round your house to pry it from your cold dead hands. ;-)

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Monday, 26 October 2009 12:17 (fifteen years ago)

i want to know whether solale or christabelle is her real name (or maybe one is her middle name?). when she went under solale i always used to type lindstrøm & solange by mistake

lex pretend, Monday, 26 October 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

Funnily enough, I don't actually think either is her real name, but I can't remember where I read that.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Monday, 26 October 2009 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeh 1st time i read it i thought it was an unlikely collab

mizzell, Monday, 26 October 2009 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Only heard the non-aeroplane version today, anyone else think this might actually do OK, sales-wise? Probably not, but it is a lot more catchy and poppy than some of the stuff that's done well that I've heard recently

Roger Sánchez Broto (vain_bowers), Monday, 26 October 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

the Aeroplane vocal mix kind of annoys me because when it does that little flourish at the end it feels like it's going to leap up to a higher level of awesomeness again (as it has already done four or five times), but then it just stops. A very minor complaint, I guess it's tough to know where to stop when you can just keep making it better and better forever.

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Monday, 26 October 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

wow, the American release date for this (according to amazon) is January 2010! Both the single and the Aeroplane remix are ace!!

No! it doesn't come out til next year!

I'm trying really hard to wait and hear it properly, in its entirety next year and not go chasing it. Like, I don't want to ruin it before it comes out. because if I have it now, I'll just start playing it out ALL. THE. TIME. and burn out on it by the time it's released.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 November 2009 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is one of my favorite things that ive heard in the last 12 months, unquestionably

max, Saturday, 7 November 2009 11:53 (fifteen years ago)

T've only just heard the original Baby I Can't Stop and it's miles better than the Aeroplane version.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 November 2009 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

Lovesick is just so perfect for playing over and over and over - you can make your own 20 minute remix, because it starts with the same WOOO! that they use during the breakdown so it just sounds like a loop.

Honestly, it's like... I love his proggy space disco. But there's only thing I really love more than noodly prog - and that's girlpop. So you take girlpop vocals and stick them over proggy space disco and I'm in heaven. This is the most *ME* music since I first heard School of Seven Bells.

Not that they sound the slighest bit alike - but conceptually they just totally hit my personal sweet spot in different ways.

OK, I think it might just be official. I think my Crush of Shame on Lindstrom has finally eclipsed my Crush of Shame on Erol. :-0

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 November 2009 11:57 (fifteen years ago)

Incidentally I've only just realised that the amazing sparkly disco track Lindstrom's been playing live for the last couple of years is 'Breakfast In Heaven' which I'd never heard before.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 November 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I could have sworn I had Breakfast in Heaven, but I can't seem to find it. Must be at work. Dammit. OK, I'm gonna go on a Lindstrom binge this afternoon.

Came here to post exactly that! The track restarts perfectly in time -- I don't even notice it looping back to the beginning. 17 times in a row so far.

WTF @ "Baby Can't Stop" being floating around for THREE YEARS before it finally came out.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

it came out as a single three years ago

I WANT TO HEAR THIS FYI

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

I think promos for this never actually went out and they paid people like Max and Lex and Tim to hype it knowing full well they'd never heard it, just to build fervent anticipation.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 8 November 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also the bit in Baby Can't Stop where the pianos come in is just so ridiculously brazen in its sheer audacity.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 8 November 2009 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

So has the release really been moved up? Can anyone confirm/deny? link?

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, he is playing on the 28th November so it would make sense.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

lol since last.fm automatically tweeted that l&c were one of my most played artists last week, i've actually had a bunch of randoms tweeting me asking if i can leak it. as well as like 5 friends. idk why it hasn't leaked yet! you can come to my house and listen to it.

i LOVE that vanity 6 are a reference point on the press sheet - makes so much sense, christabelle's voice is pitched precisely in between your expected ethereal drifty balearic diva and hard-edged, supercool r&b attitude. she apparently ad libbed a lot of her vocals, so it really keeps that loose, jammy feel - but she's never remotely unfocused, she just keeps it moving from one awesome vocal styling to the next.

lex pretend, Monday, 9 November 2009 10:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'd prefer it to come out in 2010 and have a chance of being a zeitgeisty type album rather than something that gets largely overlooked by virtue of coming out at the back end of 2009.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

That's a good point, Matt. But it's gonna be a 2010 album even if it comes out now.

Right, I'm coming round your house tonight to listen to it, Lex!

It's funny, I love the way Christabelle flips between sweet, sweet singing and those kind of low down spoken word parts. With her tough girl vocal styling she almost manages to pull of a Shangri-Las on Lovesick, yet updates it into something completely fresh.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:36 (fifteen years ago)

(Ha ha, I have three different incarnations of Lindstrom in my top 8 on last.fm again this week)

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:36 (fifteen years ago)

if you want to you can! i'll be in tonight, probably still bashing fruitlessly away at my computer. did you get my email on fri btw?

lex pretend, Monday, 9 November 2009 10:38 (fifteen years ago)

I did, thanks, but as much as I want that album I really don't want to get on any more PR's lists. I've spent the past year since Plan B's demise trying to get OFF PR's lists. I can wait. Really I can.

Actually, I better not come round. I've got a terrible cold at the moment and don't want to pass it on.

Are you going to Corsica Studios later this month? All you Lindstrom stans should come.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago)

ooh i've heard tell of that - will definitely try to make it.

fun christabelle fact - she is half-mauritian. she sounds like a definite wkiw candidate.

lex pretend, Monday, 9 November 2009 10:44 (fifteen years ago)

Her voice is so sexy, in that slightly husky and effortlessly cool kind of way.

I was under the impression that the Lindstrom & Prins Thomas night at Corsica clashed with a friend's birthday party but have only just realised they're one and the same. Yay.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 9 November 2009 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

Right, if you lot are all there, please, STOP ME if you see me in any way attempting to lick Lindstrom or Prins Thomas.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

slocks arent u a journalist? can u get a press copay

max, Monday, 9 November 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

i cant believe they included some of the old shit on this ... why not just record new?

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

b/c the old shit is really good and, from the evidence of this thread, not actually that widely heard? and there are only a couple of previously-released tracks (not counting the current single)

lex pretend, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

i think some of the old stuff has be re-recorded/re-mixed too. at least the vangelis cover definitely is.

max, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

well, its only 10 tracks & 'music in my mind' & 'let it happen' have been out for ages, pretty high profile lindstrom singles!

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

hmm i wondered if they'd messed with that at all xp

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno ive had the vinyl single for the original cover he did of that for like 2 yrs i feel like

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

10 new traxx is a lot of new traxx deej!!

max, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

that would be 8 new traxx!!

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

or 8.5 if he messed w/ 'let it happen'

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

8 new traxx is more Lindstrommy goodness than we had last month so I ain't complaining!

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I meant 8. 8 new traxx is a lot!!

max, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

also there's this thing where when people release an album they put previous singles on it; this has been going on for some time

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

well of course but that doesnt mean im not disappointed that this one includes a song that was on his last album

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

instead of **another** new jam

heart goin ham (deej), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Who says that you would have got more new jams if the old singles would have been left off? WOuldn't you just have less Linstrommy goodness?

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

The AGONY of REPEAT:
DEEJ CALLS OUT LINDSTROM
"HALT this FILLER CHIZ"

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

don't forget about the track that is just a backwards rewind through all the other tracks!

ehh, the 'filler' is good for the flow of the album, imo. and i'll take any excuse to hear more of those tunes

psychgawsple, Monday, 9 November 2009 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

lol so is this going to be like that lindstrom & prins album where everyone pretended to love it for a month and then we all forgot about it

::licks thread::

I get excited every time this gets bumped.

This is something that I've really missed in the age of leaks and iTunes and being able to google any record imaginable and have it on my hard drive in a minute and a half. The idea of actually *anticipating* an album. Of looking forward to it, trying to imagine what it's going to sound like from singles and other people's descriptions. I know already that I'm going to like it, so it's going to be exciterating to see if my imagination will compare with the real thing when it comes.

In that Stumbling On Happiness book I read a while ago, it said that that was one of the basic human methods of maximising happiness - setting the right amount of anticipation time. That, actually, a really nice thing happening in a couple of weeks is actually better than a really nice thing RIGHT NOW, because not only do you get the nice thing, but you get a couple of weeks of thinking about the nice thing, which is in itself inherently pleasing.

So I'm enjoying this state of ignorance right now.

(Not that I won't d/l the hell out of it the moment it does leak, but right now I'm enjoying the anticipating.)

However, if max was to post another track on his blog then surely that wouldn't be a bad thing either... ;)

some talk about the collab in this interview that coincides with his mix for Fact magazine

willem, Friday, 13 November 2009 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks, really interesting interview! Quite interesting to read about the differences in their writing styles and how they worked together on that one. I like the idea of spinning 1 minute pop songs into 10 minute space epics. I need a Lindstrom around the studio to help with my tracks, maybe. ;-)

SOrry, just another moment of squee...

I have just made that my new wallpaper. ^^^^^^^^^^

Tiled. So I have 12 Lindstroms winking at me. It's a bit much, really. I may never run another report again, let alone produce any music.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, that article says 18th January. Rough Trade says November. What's going on here?

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

is the tracklisting for Fact Mix 100 available anywhere? - i couldn't see it

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Friday, 13 November 2009 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

It's not on the site. And it's erm... interesting. (OK, I admit, I had to skip the Abba track, Lindstrom, why you brake heart?)

He's really all over the map. It's quite refreshing, actually.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

Did he really just play Uli Jon Roth - The Night The Master Comes?!?!?!?! Holy shit. WTF?!?!?!?

He either has the best taste in the world, or the worst. But he's Norwegian. They're like that, right?

(I think I love him)

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Is that last freaked-out backwards track Wars of Armageddon? Actually I don't think so. Need to get Pfunkboy on this mix to give us the track list.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

Names and titles, or a few of them, come up in the last bit of the interview - read, don't just look at the pictures ;)
"The Night The Master Comes" is mentioned and that backwards track is probably "Eulogy and Light". Can't listen to it at work but will do once home...

willem, Friday, 13 November 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, sorry, I got distracted by the pics and didn't make it to the end. ;-)

No, not really. I was just LOLing at him geeking out over Led Zeppelin's drum sounds TBH.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

God, my reading comprehension has gone to shit. Curse the internet, I used to pay more attention, but now if it's not in the standard artist - song list format, I don't notice it.

(To be fair, I was doing 6 things at once while reading that article trying to work and squee and read and listen all at the same time. I didn't actually notice the Black Sabbath track though I was not looking forward to it, wargh.)

Ah, so it was Eulogy & LIght. Right band, wrong album closer. Close, though?

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

Tracklist:

1. Joe Byrd & The Field Hippies - Kalyani
2. Jobriath - World Without End
3. Hall and Oates - Is It A Star?
4. Abba - Eagle
5. Tears for Fears - The Big Chair
6. Led Zeppelin - Bonzo´s Montreux
7. Robert Wyatt - Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road
8. Black Sabbath - Breakout
9. Uli Jon Roth - The Night the Master Comes
10. Ciledaknuf - Thgil Dna Ygolue

Eagle is a great song.

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Friday, 13 November 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

I just have a pathological hatred of Abba. Cannot get past it.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

Oh jesus, I take it all back. I actually thought that Black Sabbath track was some long lost Hawkwind bootleg the first time through. Was gonna comment on how awesome it was if I could chase down what it was. Have just realised that it might be Ozzy that I don't like, not Sabbath.

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah but Eagle is a total predecessor of Studio + Lindstrom + Sally Shapiro stylings (imho)

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Friday, 13 November 2009 13:05 (fifteen years ago)

But that's the element of that aesthetic that I *don't* like!

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

I had a cheap Roland sampler in the late 80s as well, but the capabilities of such a fantastic machine combined with teenage imagination made me use it mainly for recording loud farts and other exciting bodily sounds. Played it in a different pitch, or as chords. Very funny (laughs).

mizzell, Friday, 13 November 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Steve Morris from New Order once said the exact same thing.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 13 November 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

I really liked that mix - the only thing I didn't get along with was Hall and Oates! (that's the element of that aesthetic that I *don't* like!)

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 13 November 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Friday, 13 November 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry! No pics ...

He played loads of older stuff as well as Where You Go ..., all done as a continous mix. Fab, but it was a weeknight and people didn't go very crazee over it, and in fact some of them left half-way through.

My evening is complicated on the 28th and I think I'm going to be left begging people to come with me at pub chucking out time. Sigh.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 13 November 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

psychgawsple, Sunday, 15 November 2009 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

Ha ha, I was thinking it would rather put off the disco kids. It's way more beard than it is disco. Makes me feel quite happy knowing that in fact, Lindstrom really *is* a DDB under all that techno/house bobbinage.

LOL my penny (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 15 November 2009 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

jesus

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Sunday, 15 November 2009 10:49 (fifteen years ago)

i mean i love me some beardiness but there's nothing special going on in that respect with this mix. are we really supposed to be wowed by black sabbath and led zeppelin at this point?

psychgawsple, Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

Considering there were eight songs in that mix that were NOT Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin - yeah, I think that sticking Jobriath or Uli Jon Roth in a mix is definitely something that I have not heard before.

I mean, I'm teasing about the "ha ha, Hans-Peter is a DDB not a dance kid" because I know that's the sort of thing that sends Tim F into the vapours.

Anyway, is a mix supposed to be "mind-blowing" or just a representation of where that particular artist is at, at this point in time?

(and as an aside, isn't it a mark of creativity that an artist can take unpromising "influences" and turn them into something as wonderful as what Lindstrom does?)

LOL my penny (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:24 (fifteen years ago)

ugh i just don't get it, i guess. it has nothing to do with notions of obscurity, just a poor track selection imo? there are more interesting led zeppelin and black sabbath songs.

psychgawsple, Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

Well, he succeeded in one effect - in that, I, too, have always shied away from Black Sabbath. But hearing an instrumental track like Breakout actually made me go and investigate further. I think he picked those tracks (if I understood the interview correctly, when we've already established that my reading comprehension has gone to shit) specifically *because* they were ones that showed a different side - ones that haterz might even be intrigued by?

LOL my penny (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

not to be all waynes world or something but fu if u dont like black sabbath, imhfo

hoos-kingofthedrugs (deej), Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:42 (fifteen years ago)

ehh, it just boils down to me not liking whatever 'psych freakout' vibe he's pursuing here. sabbath is great, wyatt is great, fuck even led zeppelin is great (maybe wouldn't admit to this sober). and i see the common thread in all of those tracks, i just don't like it. it's not something i care to listen to again (and i used to be a giant 'psych'-head, fwiw)

psychgawsple, Sunday, 15 November 2009 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

That track made me realise, I don't mind Black Sabbath - I just can't fucking stand Ozzy Osbourne's voice - or indeed, entire personna perhaps.

And heh, I think "heavy psych freakout" vibe is exactly what I like about it. I don't think I'll ever really grow out of that. (Though, spending my teenage years in a little nowhere town in upstate NY, it took a long, long time for me to admit that there was anything good to Zeppelin.)

(and yes, I have such the horn for Hans-Peter that I do find it kinda gratifying to see him exercising the DDB side of him.)

LOL my penny (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 15 November 2009 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

Lindstrom doing a mix like that makes perfect sense - I don't get the controversy here.

Yeah, I played Lovesick at Crafty Beats yesterday afternoon. I just looped it coz it was the last song in my set and I was waiting for Anna to come back from a smoke and start her set. It was just so laid-back perfect I was almost disappointed when Anna came back and I didn't get to set it on its third spin.

okay, it leaked and I heard it and it's amazing and then the baby looked at me. brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 22 November 2009 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

I knew this was gonna happen and I hate you all.

I don't have access to secret torrent sites. So you're all hearing it, and I"m not gonna hear it for another month or two, by which point, you'll all be sick of it and not want to talk about it any more.

Just going to roll my eyes and harrumph and think about Lindstrom masturbating my jams, baby. :-P

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 22 November 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

As is usually the case, early listeners overstate the quality of the release because there's something special about hearing it first. This album is about half as interesting as the first Sally Shapiro album. The first track is terrible, the rework of Let It Happen is worse than the original version and the short pop style doesn't allow for the epic jams Lindstrom is so good at. I'll upload the album for you but i'm warning you, it's more exciting to think about than to hear. Prepare to be underwhelmed. You've already heard the best two tracks on it.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 22 November 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

max, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

I guess if it is up on secret torrent sites, it'll soon be on blogs and stuff. But what with talk of it being like Sally Shapiro's album (or not), I really want to hear it to see for myself.

Jibe, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

masonic, what's your email addy, i'll send you a link.

Max, the guy isn't nearly as good at short pop as he is at epic jams. I've played it 3 times now and it's just OK. I would rank it behind both L&PT albums, the Feedelity comp and every single release from Lindstrom. It's decent but not great. The best songs are Lovesick and Baby Can't Stop, far better than anything else on the album. The Sally Shapiro is full of good, memorable melodies and great singing. This one is full of dull singing and less than standard Lindstrom chuggers. of course, this is only MY opinion. I can see that you disagree.

As 2008 ended, anticipation for the new Animal Collective album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, due in January 2009, reached a fever pitch. The band and Domino were doing an unusual good job of keeping the material under wraps. The thirst for new music took a bizarre turn on December 17 when the website the Quietus received an email alleging to be from Brian "Geologist" Weitz of Animal Collective, urging them to spread the message that the band themselves wanted the record released. The note proved to be a hoax, but Weitz's email had indeed been hacked so that the illicit message could be sent, and the episode proved to be a weird sign of the times. Release dates certainly didn't mean what they once did, but the fact that fans were resorting to criminal activity to hear albums before they were legally available showed how deeply the desire for "new music now" ran for some. --MR

well in shapiro's case it has no other real purpose. its just like, music that im supposed to like because it goes thru the list of influences -- "its scandanavian, disco & sung by a reserved aryan pop goddess, A+!!!" -- but really theres nothing there -- i dont just mean melodies, i mean song writing, or functional dance music structure, ss doesnt really work on a lot of levels

lindstrom & christabelle def drop some memorable music tho

ice cr?m hand job (deej), Sunday, 22 November 2009 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

yah ok def think l+c r a lot more interesting than ss so i don't even kno why i started. There's something really athletic i want to say abt them, they remind me of awesome 70's sports clothes and I want to go running with them in my headphones, they make me think of dancing that is just as much abt stamina as it is abt foreplay r sumthing

plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 22 November 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

I'm really not keen on Sally Shapiro. I don't think she's particularly memorable at all.

Christabelle, however, is much more compelling, both as a singer, and as a writer. It's as much her presence that gives the songs I've heard (Lovesick!) such depth and well, earwormness.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 22 November 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

she's a weird singer, she has a lot of muscle without doing a whole lot, also her voice is a weird fit for this type of production

I really loved the first Shapiro single (I'll Be By Your Side) but I liked it so much that everything else she did felt cloying and irritating by comparison. I like to pretend she put out one amazing single out of nowhere and then disappeared without trace.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 November 2009 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

I think Shapiro's spectral winsomeness can work really well on solitary tracks - esp. the Tensnake and Lindstrom remixes of songs off her first album - where it both allows the music to do its thing and gives the impression that that was the idea all along. Across an entire album it becomes a bit wearing though. I can't help thinking of her as a more polite / "cute" version of Stina Nordenstam.

Before hearing this album in full I wouldn't have gone into bat for Solale/Christabelle as a particularly great vocalist but I think she excels here.

Tim F, Sunday, 22 November 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

^^yeah im listening to the tensnake remix right now -- there's definitely more of a balance between persona & music which is important when her persona is fairly one note

Went for a walk with this at lunchtime - I was surprised to find out I recognised about half of it, either Lindstrom's been playing some of it live or they've been sitting around in one form or another on various mixes for a while.

I think Lovesick and Baby Can't Stop had led me to think this would be a lot tighter and dancefloor-orientated than it ultimately turned out to be. It's sort of... blurry? Like a whole album of that bit in Where You Go I Go Too where the ambient wooze starts to blearily coalesce into a groove.

I really liked it on first listen. The first 20 seconds or so are rubbish though.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 23 November 2009 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Blurry... ambient wooze... blearily coalescing into grooves... you're talking my language here!

I'm trying to figure out where I know Let's Practice from. Seeing as I've not seen Lindstrom before, I can only guess I must have heard it on the MySpace or something.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

max, Monday, 23 November 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

Hang on, I dreamed the Christabelle was playing at that show, too. This is just my subconscious wish fulfillment f*cking with me, right?

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

i think of it less as singles + filler b/c i'd only heard "let it happen" (and i prefer the fuller album version), "music in my mind" and the aeroplane remix of "baby can't stop" before the album - and in any case i really think the ebb and flow of the album makes it a great album qua album and brings out the singles' qualities even more. fwiw i think it's way better than l&pt's ii and i'm a longtime shapiro hater ("i'll be by your side" and sundry remixes aside).

lex pretend, Monday, 23 November 2009 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah its easy to think of it as "singles + filler" just looking at the tracklist--since there are 4 pure knockouts and the rest are way less memorable--but im with lex, the sequencing here is fucking terrific, and i listen to it as an album way more often than i cherrypick for specific songs... tho id expect nothing less from a dj like lindstrom

max, Monday, 23 November 2009 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

that said the track where everything just goes backwards can fuck off

lex pretend, Monday, 23 November 2009 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

The sequencing is really great, the first half is all stoned sex jams and the second half is like "right, now we dance". I don't think of the first part as filler at all.

I really, really like Keep It Up, it sounds an out-of-focus version of the Bangles or some other 80s teen movie mall-pop act.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

keep it up is the biggest grower for me so far

max, Monday, 23 November 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

I think my one disappointment with the album is that I'd expected Christabelle to be more of an upfront-and-centre vocal presence whereas she seems like a bit of an afterthought on some of these. She doesn't really dominate any of the tracks in the ways she does Baby Can't Stop and Lovesick.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

hey, what part of "my god, what lovely filler it is" did you lot not understand?

Seriously, I'm not dissing this album. I love it so much I listened to it 3 times in a row this morning, and then had to take it off for fear of playing it 17 times in a row and burning out on it before it had even come out.

But this sense is probably because of having heard certain of the songs OVER AND OVER AND OVER when they were the only things I could find, rather than an assessment of quality.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Monday, 23 November 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think I know what you mean Kate - there's a few tracks here which sound really sharp and focused and a few tracks which sound really woozy, and the actual best moments are spread pretty evenly between them.

I love the first track actually - that little guitar lick at the end of each measure, then the piano chords, then right back into it ---> Lindstrom is a genius of groove.

i'm not really loving this and find it slightly annoying which surprises me considering "lets practise" is probably my favourite and most listened to track of the past several years. the full (original) version is so much greater a thing than the version on here. in fact, the track gets really interesting around the 6 or 7 minute mark and this version is only 5 or so. of course i understand why they wouldn't want an 11 minute track on this album but as it stands i'd rather listen to "let's practise" in full 4x over than listen to this album.

jed_, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

i would love to hear extended versions of most of these songs.

max, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think i agree actually. i like most of the songs i just find that there's a lot of stoppy startiness to the album overall. i'd like longer tracks and maybe less of them.

jed_, Tuesday, 24 November 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

i would like this record 30% more if i could hear the version that isnt a concept album about annoying backwardz voices

Has anyone tried playing that penultimate track backwards yet?

This is a bit like Aerial for me, in that it sounds like some of it was recorded several years before the the rest, and yet it flows really well.

Now I want Prins Thomas extended disco edits of every single track. Which will probably happen.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 09:55 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard this yet. in fact i'm now listening to lindstrom for the 1st time - l&pt ii which is wonderful and which i picked up the other day. are yall saying that the new one is MUCH less cosmic & progged-out? i'm a big tangerine dream & vangelis fan, so...

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

contenderizer i think u'd like reinterpretations! it's got a bad rep but I love it, its weirdly lo-fi and angular for lindstrom, great guitar in places.

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 10:28 (fifteen years ago)

It's pretty cosmic and progged out to be fair.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

am encouraged by reports of cosmic prog. and i figured reinterpretations would be remixes by other folks. love the idea of self-remixing an entire album! is that the ideal next step if i like cosmic disco, guitar noodling and endless synth arpeggios?

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:02 (fifteen years ago)

That or Where You Go I Go Too. Have you heard Studio, Contenderizer? I can't remember.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Contenderizer I'd go for Where You Go I Go Too ahead of the new one, if proggy is really what you're looking for. Helps that it's the best Lindstrom-related album as well (this new one is probably the second-best).

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:15 (fifteen years ago)

re tim's question:

no! until recently i have been locked in a small dark room with mountains of garage punk, metal and noise records. so no, have not heard studio, though i remember it getting a LOT of love hereabouts. is it of similar stock?

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

plus yeah wanted to pick up wygig2 along with ii, but someone snagged the last copy before i could. :(

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

Sort of - lots of guitar noodling and endless synth arpeggios. But more moody and with intermittent sadsack post-punkish vocals. There's even a bit on Where You Go I Go Too that sounds totally like Studio musically.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

That was an x-post.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:28 (fifteen years ago)

I'd also highly recommend Meanderthals' Desire Lines if you like II - it's a bit less dense but I think actually prettier and eerier and more affecting.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:30 (fifteen years ago)

don't think i've ever heard of meanderthal (other than as a heavy metal record i don't love). "prettier and eerier and more affecting" is just the way i like it.

and will check out studio due to recs & mucho ilm love, tho "sadsack post-punkish vocals" are not my catnip. not the good kind anyway.

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

More than half the Studio album is instrumental, if that helps.

the meanderthals album is amazing and i might even prefer it to any other balearic album mentioned so far - ideal default first-thing-in-the-morning listening to ease you into the day

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

me too. It's pretty but it's one ear and out the other for me - can never remember anything from it even though I'm pretty sure I've listened to it upwards of ten times now.

Still haven't listened to RLINC yet. Wondering if I should wait til January or cave in...

Now that's I've listened to this all the way thru a few times, I'm really impressed. Lovesick, Let's Practice, So Much Fun, High & Low. Only thing I dislike are the backward vocals at the beginning. A great mix of R&B, classic house, disco, and down tempo.

this finally turned up in the post on my return from atp. only took them a week to get it to me but i suppose i shouldn't have asked for recorded delivery

the 40 minute version of little drummer boy utterly PWNS the edit on P4k. the majority of the 40 minute mix has almost to utterly nothing to do with the christmas carol, it's just endless philip glass arpeggiated noodling which is just about my favourite thing on earth. hearing the P4k edit without having heard the rest of the piece - the build, the waves of texture, the ambience, everything that makes lindstrom lindstrommy - it's like walking in on a drunken philosophical conversation that two people have been having all evening right at the very end. it doesn't really make a lot of sense without the full understanding of what has happened before. you have to listen to it all in one go, with peaks and troughs and valleys and lakes and streams and fjords - out of context i could understand that the edit would be rather disappointing. but the full version really is worth persevering with, it has about 3 or 4 climaxes of sheer otherworldly beauty

"Baby Can't Stop" is the best Michael Jackson tribute that anyone's managed this year. Now I've heard the original, I can also appreciate the genius of the Aeroplane remix.

Also, LoveSick should really just be called FutureSexLoveSick, no?

^^^this is great

I wanna say that "Baby Can't Stop" must have existed before MJ's death. Seems like the Aeroplane mix has been floating around since before then at least.

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

Except songs like Baby Can't Talk and High and Low just make me want her to actually sing on all of the songs, instead of the vague "sing talking" she does on shit Lovesixk and Music (in my mind), I love those songs, don't get me wrong, but they just don't have the power of the ones where she really lets her voice go. Basically it would be a 47 minute long orgasm.

brndnna, Saturday, 2 January 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

okay the version of Music In My Mind on this record >>>>>>>>>>>> the original that was released ages ago. it's shorter but... bigger.

And "So Much Fun" would be so much fun if it was oh i dunno ten minutes longer?

Roz, Saturday, 2 January 2010 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

brndnna:

Really? I hope so. The backward part at the beginning of "Looking for What" is awful. That's the only track with a backwards intro, no?

rennavate, Monday, 4 January 2010 10:50 (fifteen years ago)

Presumably the backwards vocals were leakproofing?

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 4 January 2010 11:55 (fifteen years ago)

i bought the rough trade release but i haven't listened to the album proper - just the bonus discs that came with it. are you telling me that it's different from the leaked version? because i love those backwards vocals and i'll miss them if they're not on the final mix. in fact that might just change my entire conception of the album

Karen Tregaskin, Monday, 4 January 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I've heard the rough trade version and it has the backward parts... I'd like to get this confirmed either way!

rennavate, Monday, 4 January 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

Having now bought it - the backwards vocals at the beginning of Looking For What have been replaced with, well, forwards vocals. Sounds a lot better frankly.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, it sounds like the leaked version was either half finished or not finally mixed or something. This one sounds way better, and there are longer intros to a couple of the songs (notably Lovesick).

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

i have a retail copy as well as the promo and there are definitely still backwards vocals at the start of "looking for what"!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

Do you have a two-bar beat intro at the beginning of Lovesick or does it just kick in?

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

Keep It Up is different as well, the chiming chords in the chorus are on the beat rather than just off it, it sounds a lot more... in focus?

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

I believe you Lex, but then what is Matt DC talking about? Surely he's telling the truth too?

rennavate, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

"lovesick" just kicks in, same as the promo - 3:12 is the length.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

Keep It Up is different as well, the chiming chords in the chorus are on the beat rather than just off it, it sounds a lot more... in focus?

― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, January 5, 2010 10:41 PM (7 minutes

this does not sound like an improvement

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

I've got a whole extra two seconds on mine, aaaah.

I got my version from emusic, fwiw, but it's definitely different. The "you're my only friend" wailing bit in 'Let It Happen' is a lot less upfront in the mix. Also 'So Much Fun' is a little bit shorter but a lot fuller and brighter with the piano chords much more upfront.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

So Much Fun also has a new widdly guitar line that I hadn't noticed before.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if this version people are talking about (wavs / emusic) actually predates the promo / released version?

On some not necessarily rational level it makes sense to me that a forward vocals intro would predate a backwards vocals intro.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

hang on a sec - i think i have the extra two-bar beat intro at the start of "let it happen", not "lovesick", and i hear the new brighter piano/widdly guitar in "so much fun" as well

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

but def still the backwards vocals!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

(i've been listening to the cardboard-sleeve promo until today - reimported from a proper-cd-case retail copy today based on these apparent "changes")

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)

Nah the 'new' version of Let It Happen is a bit longer as well.

High and Low has the last minute or so of humming and drifting cut off the end but is otherwise more or less the same. The whole album has more low end to it, that I can tell, although that may have just been a matter of shit MP3s.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

On balance, the album I bought >>>> the album I stole. 1-0 to honesty!

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

I'm so confused now.

rennavate, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

oh wait - i do have the extra beat intro to "lovesick", but it's at the end of "looking for what"

(i haven't listened to my reimported mp3s properly yet, just skipping around to the relevant points - and listening to the start of "looking for what" now, it starts off with backwards vox which then skip about between forwards and backwards vox)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

Christabelle: What shall we do, shall we start?
Lindstrom: Looking for what?
Christablle: Shall we start, shall we start, shall we start looking?
Lindstrom: Looking for what? (Repeated over and over again while Christabelle goes 'ooh' in the background)

Is how the album now begins for me. No backwards vocals (although they're still there on the penultimate track).

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

So if I buy this it won't have backward vocals at the beginning?

Jacob Sanders, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

i have:

backwards christabelle vox (synth comes in at 0:37) until 0:48, at which point lindstrøm repeats "looking for what? looking for what?" and the backwards vox fade out; at 1:00 christabelle's main forwards vox come in, "shall we start? shall we start?" &c

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

i mean "what shall we do? shall we start?" but there's no more lindstrøm after 1:00

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

That's what I have.

Jacob Sanders, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that was the case on the old version I had. Maybe Rough Trade was selling promos or something, or the early release was based on the leaked master and they then changed things?

Essentially the biggest difference on the new one is that Baby Can't Stop no longer sounds substantially bigger and fuller than the others. So Much Fun felt kind of airy before, now it's a big shiny stomper.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

i seem to have all the other changes you mentioned though - i'd guess that emusic (or whoever sent the mp3s to retailers) must have unscrambled the backwards vox for whatever reason

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

I have a retail CD copy, bought from Rough Trade mail order. It's the only version I've heard. It sounds as Lex describes, rather than as Matt DC describes.

1. Backwards vocals at start of Looking For What, exactly as Lex describes.
2. Possibly some sort of beat intro to Lovesick at the end of Looking For What, but Lovesick itself kicks straight in.
3. Brief backwards vocal at start of Let It Happen, then beat intro. Main track kicks in at 0:21.
4. Chiming chords in chorus of Keep It Up are slightly off the beat.
5. So Much Fun has a guitar line which could reasonably be described as "widdly".
6. High & Low takes c. 90 seconds to fade out completely - the last lead vocal is around 4:35.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

I have the same CD that mike has. I suppose it's entirely possible that retail mp3s include some different mixes to the retail CD. I'm pretty sure I've heard of this happening before.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

someone in a country that sells it run out and buy a non-Rough Trade hard copy and report back! (I got the RT vers obv, and it's packed with backwards bits)

Audrey Wetherspoons (sic), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen a copy with a second cd of remixes! Unfortunately it was like sixty dollars so I did not buy (this price strategy is prob due to that music store owner who literally harrasses customers into laying down ridiculous amounts of cash - hopefully it will appear elsewhere for much cheaper).

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

is the part where she goes "I PLAY THE DRUMS" still there at the beginning of "let's practise"?

guammls (QE II), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

that is the rough trade copy that i have! i've just browsed 7digital though and think i know what's going on - there's a single version of "looking for what" which is 5:59, and the mp3 of "looking for what" they're selling with the album is also 5:59, but my cd copy of it is 6:06, so i assume there are two different versions of that track.

everything else, my retail copy jives with matt's.

xp - yes

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen a copy with a second cd of remixes!

My Rough Trade copy came with this. (And a third CD of Little Drummer Boy.)

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

It's like the West Coast confusion all over again. These Balearic types just like to fuck with us, I think. Anyway, just to be really anal:

Looking For What - 5:59
Lovesick - 3:16
Let It Happen - 4:54
Keep It Up - 4:30
Music In My Mind - 3:19
Baby Can't Stop - 6:06
Let's Practise - 5:49
So Much Fun - 4:37
Never Say Never - 3:50
High And Low - 4:59

As far as I can tell the only track that is defintely the same as the first version I had is Baby Can't Stop and maybe Music In My Mind as well.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

some considerable time differences from the one i've got.

moron oil (Gukbe), Thursday, 7 January 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

Matt DC's version is the same length as the track lengths I see in the iTunes store. I'm perfectly satisfied with the version I have but it would be nice to know which is the "proper" mix.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 7 January 2010 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

at this point, I'm guessing that it's a modern iteration of the cassette and LP versions having different sequencing and edits; the wacky backwards intros and whatnot are what he wants for people who are playing the whole album through to hear, but he assumes that people buying mp3s are more likely to listen to individual tracks, and thus want a version more designed for discrete play.

Audrey Wetherspoons (sic), Thursday, 7 January 2010 04:46 (fifteen years ago)

that's fine for minor stuff, but DC's Keep it Up is about a minute longer, while High and Low is over a minute shorter.

moron oil (Gukbe), Thursday, 7 January 2010 04:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i guess sic is right

the times on the retail cd are -

looking for what 6:06
lovesick 3:12
let it happen 4:53
keep it up 3:28
music in my mind 3:19
baby can't stop 6:11
let's practise 5:42
so much fun 4:55
never say never 3:08
high & low 6:21

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 January 2010 08:33 (fifteen years ago)

they've definitely polished up the production between promo and retail copies though

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 January 2010 08:34 (fifteen years ago)

that's fine for minor stuff, but DC's Keep it Up is about a minute longer, while High and Low is over a minute shorter.

yeah and his last album essentially had completely different tracks on the vinyl!

Audrey Wetherspoons (sic), Thursday, 7 January 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

So this is pretty much a 5 star album, amirite?

rennavate, Saturday, 9 January 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

is there anything on this as funky (or as MJ-like) on here as "baby can't stop"?

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Thursday, 21 January 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

MJ-like - definitely not
funky - YMMV but the basslines of Looking For What and Lovesick totally slay me in a bizarro olde Ze Records sort of way maybe

the BIG MAN from the hilarious "Alan McGee" tweets (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 21 January 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

Finally this is out. Music store had the 2CD version Tim mentioned upthread, at normal single-cd price. What a nice surprise :)

The Bonus Disc:
Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane Vocal Remix)
Baby Can't Stop (Prins Thomas Remix)
Baby Can't Stop (Idjut Boys Remix)
Looking For What (Sally Shapiro Remix)
So Much Fun (Dølle Jølle Remix)
Lovesick (Fan Death Reworks)

Blue Fucks Like Ben Nelson (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 January 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

lovin' this, 'baby can't stop' especially.

i wonder if 'baby can't stop' is the untitled demo i heard in a mix about two years ago... really sparse apreggiated synth line going up and down?

― racist of the falling leaves (haitch), Monday, 19 October 2009 13:58 (3 months ago)

to answer my own question, the demo must've been an early 'so much fun'; the album version is pretty heavily re-tooled in comparison, everything but the vocals has changed!

CrazySexyFrog (haitch), Monday, 8 February 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

so if i have the version with backwards vocals on the first track, do i have the wrong version?

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 05:49 (fifteen years ago)

nah that's what i got, and mine's a retail copy (w/ bonus disc)

...unless I too have the wrong version??

CrazySexyFrog (haitch), Monday, 8 February 2010 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

alright, that conversation upthread kinda got confusing to me so i wasn't sure

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

we ended up deciding that the legit mp3 version doesn't have as many backwards bits as the legit CD version

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 26 February 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

ian u should check out that last lindstrom solo record - 'where you go i go too' - it's not quite the same, no vocals, more sprawling epics; but you might like it i'd say!

eau de humanity (haitch), Friday, 26 February 2010 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

Joint Custody (ian), Friday, 26 February 2010 07:31 (fifteen years ago)

what tracks on this do you like?

"let it happen" is a vangelis cover, but id be surprised if you didnt already own "earth"

the names that come to mind when i hear this are like... quincy jones, giorgio moroder, nile rodgers, bernard edwards on the production side.

but this is drawing on a lot of stuff im not super familiar with and those are some pretty obvious names! deej probably has some good ideas too.

max, Friday, 26 February 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

I tend to think anyone who likes this would also like SOS Band.

Chaka Khan, Sinnamon, Carol Williams, Katie Kissoon, Sylvia Striplin, Karen Silver...it totally invokes that post-disco diva with producer (with a synthesizer) tradition that informs not just that early-80s Paradise Garage sound but that era of R&B, pop and boogie.

beta blog, Friday, 26 February 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm trying to work out what it is about this album that has prevented me from ever really loving it this year. It might be Christabelle's vocals, but not entirely because the songs where she's on it she is totally on it, maybe it just doesn't stay up in the stratosphere enough for my liking, and the two tracks that follow Baby Can't Stop feel a bit half-finished.
