ILX 1980s ALBUM POLL REDUX: Nomination Thread (nomination time ends on Sunday, November 1st)

For those who weren't around here then, back in 2005 we did a poll on the best singles and albums of the 1980s. The results for the singles poll can be found here. However, for some reason the results for albums poll were never released. Since the guy who did the poll isn't around anymore, we are now redoing the poll. The actual poll will be a closed email poll, but first we will have an open nomination process. So post you nominations in this thread.

Here are the rules for nominations:

* Everyone is allowed to nominate a maximum of 7 albums. (Why 7, you may ask? I just thought 5 would be too little and 10 too much.) You may also nominate less than 7 albums.

* The nomination process will end on Sunday, the 31st of October, at midnight GMT. No nominations after that point.

* You may nominate any album that was first released in the 1980s. Albums which, for example, were released in 1979 in the UK but only in 1980 in the USA (or vice versa) are not valid.

* Multi-artist compilations and mix albums are valid.

* Greatest Hits or Best Of type of single-artist compilations are valid, if they were first released in the 1980s. It doesn't matter if the individual tracks were released before the 1980s.

* "Lost" albums and other such records that were recorded before the 1980s, but only released in that decade, are valid.

* Reissues of albums that were released before the 1980s are not valid.

Based on running the 60s polls, 10 is far too little. I'd suggest a minimum of 30 and preferably 40 or 50. People don't have to use the allocation if they can't find enough albums they want to vote for.

Will have to have a think about noms.

20 is perfect but in case of an order the weighing scheme shouldn't be too skewed. the first one 20 points and the last one one point would be not so good. my fave would never be 20 times as good as my no. 20. i am not sure if the poll needs any weighing, actually. what about 50 points you can distribute and the maximum per album would be five. and the minimum one. or something like that. what did we do in the other polls?

Yes, the actual poll will be done later on by email. This is just the nomination process to get a list of albums from which to vote, so it doesn't matter in which order you nominate them.

Though if the nomination list will turn out to be big, I could consider 30 albums, but no more. Surely everyone can fit the absolute best of the 80s into a top 30? Like I said above, the point is not to vote for every album you like, just for the ones you think are truly among the greatest records of the 80s.

Limiting voters to the smallest possible number of options out of a provided list of nominations doesn't help you whittle down to the best of the best, it narrows the results down to the most obvious canonical choices without representing everyone's tastes any more accurately. But yeah, if you're open to expanding to 30 that'd be cool.

Since there must be a lot of posters who weren't around in 2005, I thought it would be fair to redo the nominations. Also, I'm not sure about other people, but at least in my case my nomination is rather different from what it was in 2005, due to both changes in taste and hearing more 80s albums. Only 2 of my nominations here were among my 2005 noms too.

I dunno, in my case I might be able to list about twenty 80s albums I really really love, but after 20 I'd probably start stuffing the list with safe, canonical choices. It must be a question of age too: people who were in their teens or older during the 80s probably have a lot easier time to come up with a long list than younger people like me, who've only discovered most of their 80s favourites in the 90s or 00s.

Since there must be a lot of posters who weren't around in 2005, I thought it would be fair to redo the nominations.

i) where is that old nominations list?
ii) like marauder i don't really see the point of going through this nomination process again. people will just be looking for surrogate votes as mentioned already. i have some more. what about joy division's "closer" and a couple of talk talk albums?
iii) why don't we take the old 80s nominations list and complete it with obvious omissions instead of reinventing the wheel?

thanks for the effort you are putting into this tuomas but i feel there is the danger that the new nominations list will be less complete than the old one. i have a compromise proposal: why don't we just join the two at the end?

Yeah, I considered that option. When this nomination process is over, if there are some totally essential albums missing from this list that were on the previous list, I'll probably add them to the final voting list. However, people shouldn't see this as an opportunity to only nominate some obscure stuff that wasn't on the previous list. Nominate what you think is essential, and don't pay too much attention to the previous list.

I want to give myself some time before I submit anything. But it's going to be Puerto Rico over Cuba, definitely. Was anything worthwhile happening in Cuban popular music in the 80s? (I'm not the person to ask since I don't like most Cuban music since Benny More's heyday.)

Based on running the 60s polls, 10 is far too little. I'd suggest a minimum of 30 and preferably 40 or 50.

Seconding this -- I could make do with 30 albums, but I'd much prefer to list 50 and order them accordingly.

There should also be an option for unranked lists, where each album is equally rated. I think once most of us here narrow down our favorites to a top 30 or so , the ordering/placing is pretty much arbitrary. Can one really say which of Daydream Nation or Purple Rain or Spirit of Eden or Dare or Nation of Millions, etc. is the best?

I'd much rather give each of my top 30 albums an equally weighted vote than try to pick my #1, #2 etc. album of the 1980s.

For example, "Wise Guy" and "Tropical Gangsters" by Kid Creole and the Coconuts appear to be the same album, or at least they have the same track list. However, I'm not that knowledeable on KCatC, so if someone here knows that it isn't the same album, please let me know.

I suspect the Trouble Funk is the album Drop the Bomb, as the one go-go album to enter the canon. Pärt's Tabula Rasa, like most his works, is known from the ECM recordingp (1984).

Curious about how these nominations compared to the critical consensus as tabulated on acclaimedmusic.net, I found only 29 albums in that sites 80s top 100 not represented here, with the highest at position 28: Licensed to Ill, So, Licensed to Ill, Dare!, Synchronicity, Imperial Bedroom, War, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Get Happy!!, Shoot Out the Lights, Document, New York, Like a Prayer, Tracy Chapman, Los Angeles, Sound Affects, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, Criminal Minded, Club Classics Vol. 1/Keep On Movin', Low-Life, No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith, Sandinista!, Green, Tim, Ocean Rain, Stop Making Sense, Brothers in Arms, Strangeways, Here We Come, The Real Thing. IMO, most of our omissions are flawed in uninteresting ways, so I think we're doing really well here.

Discogs is usually more trustworthy about release years than Allmusic, but all three sources seem to list only the 1991 CD reissue/compilation. Allmusic and Amazon say the original (presumably LP?) was released in 1984, but have no further info on it. This page does have someone selling an "Original Sufferhead" LP from 1984, but it there's no track list. I'm just gonna have to trust the 1984 has the same track list as the 1991 CD.

No-one has really had problems with ranking stuff in my telly poll; I don't think it would be a problem. I'm not sure it would be too much to have a ranked one and one where you don't rank and tuomas just gives the median to each one. so if it went 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for example, but you didn't want to give 1 record 10 and another 1 point, you could give them all 5.5?

As for the weighed vote, how would you feel about a systen where you can vote for 30 albums, and the weighing goes something like this:

1: 45 points
2: 30 points
3: 25 points
4: 20 points
5: 15 points
6-10: 10 points each
11-15: 7 points each
16-20: 5 points each
21-25: 3 points each
26-30: 2 points each

Or alternatively you can give an even vote for 30 albums, and each album gets 9 points. In both cases the number of points you can deal is 270. Does this sound good?

This would give your top album more weight than the rest of the top 5, and top 5 more weight than the rest of the list, but it would still be more proportionate than a simple system where your top album gets 30 points and album #30 gets 1 point.

It was pretty hard to come up with the exact numbers, as I wanted to create a system where the top 5 gets more weight than the rest of list, but the total amount of points still needs to be a multiple of 30, so the even vote doesn't have to rely on decimals. If someone has a better system for a weighed vote, you can post it here.

You're making a lot of work for yourself there Tuomas. Looks good though - I like no.1s to get a bit of a premium.

(I also like decent points for getting a vote at all, but that doesn't matter so much if you're allowing votes for 30 different albums - it does seem a bit unfair in 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 polls where nine folk giving record X a point get outweighed by some loon pushing 'Shaddup You Face' for a lark)

The point is to give people the chance to put more weigh on the albums they really, really love. A number one vote can outweigh the votes of 22 people, yes, but I'm not sure how much they love the album that's in the 30th spot. Though if they do love all the albums on their list, they can always go for the equal points option.

In Blount's original 80s poll #1 spot got 300 points and the final spot 2 points, I thought my suggestion was balanced compared to that.

in case we make a poll for the weighting scheme i propose to multiply all the points in my scheme by three. i.e. top spot 30 points, #2 24 points up to #16-#30 6 points. in that case the even split vote would give ten points to each of the 30 albums. no decimals needed.

Okay then. To make the comparison easier here is my suggestion with the corrected weightings:

In total 300 points. Therefore the split even vote would be 10 points for each of the 30 albums.

Wouldn't the easiest thing just be to say that you can vote for up to 30 albums, and get, say, up to 40 points to distribute? That way, folks who want their tops to be weighted higher can do it, and folks who want to distribute their votes evenly can do it, and there's just a simple checksum for each column.

If the point system is fixed, the person doing the processing only has to know what albums in what order. If the point system is up to the voter, then the processor has to know not only the album but the number of points assigned to it. Could be (slightly) more headache-inducing. Plus makes voting more of a challenge -- not just a ranked list, but a division of points. Could reduce the number of responses. Not sure it makes a big difference either way...

I also like Paul's option (a).

Basically I think Paul's system is okay, but I don't like the idea of numbers 16-30 all getting the same amount of points. I think Alex's proposal is better. Makes more sense for there to be 5x different between albums 1 and 30 than 10x difference, and so forth. It's a much more evenly distributed weighting.

It might also lead to more ties, though, which could be a bit undramatic. Especially if #16-30 all get the same amount of votes. The less even distribution is also meant to make the poll more dramatic.

I did, but I think of it as a mini-album, since it has 8 tracks, and so do 4AD, since it has M-AD catalogue number.

But I nominated it in a fit of confusion mainly as I thought I could sneak in the two-fer with Surfer Rosa, except SR was already nominated. I'm quite happy to de-nominate it entirely.

(is probably the thing I listen to least out of my nominations, and it's not like the Pixies will go unrepresented otherwise)

Passion was nominated, Koyaanisqatsi and Mishima deserve to be nominated, and though I love them, I wouldn't spend some of my 30 votes for my other soundtrack faves from the decade, including Liquid Sky, Himmel Uber Berlin, or the various (somewhat indistinguishable) Micheal Nyman soundtracks for Peter Greenaway films (Draughtsman's Contract, A Zed & Two Noughts, Drowning by Numbers, The Cook the Thief His Wife and Her Lover)

Sundar, I can't find any info on La Creation du monde being released in the 1980s. AMG gives the release year as 1996, and even Parmegiani's own site says it's 1991. So I'll have to disqualify it, you may nominate something else instead.
