NOMINATIONS THREAD for ILX METAL ALBUMS Of 2009 (NOMINATIONS CLOSE TODAY!!!!!!) - non rolling metal regulars welcomed to warm themselves by our blackened pyre of statistics, so plz Vom and Note

Starting the nominations a bit earlier this year so I can extend the voting period. I think practically everything is out now but no doubt will be by the time nominations are closed on December 20.

No limits to the amount anyone can nominate, I want a full list for people to vote from so that noone complains something has been left out.
So nominate as much as you like and as often as you like. Use Rolling Metal Thread 2009 as a guide if you're not sure what was out 2009.
Reissues do not count also no material recorded years and years ago but only issued this year. No compilations either.

If there's enough objections to "false metal" nominations then it can be taken off. But last year only 1 person complained about Marnie Stern then it got in the top list and people moaned then. So if there's any objections this is the thread to do it in.
Anyone however complaining "thats false metal" will get pointed and laughed at for the duration of the poll.

I think Alestorm take themselves quite seriously and wouldn't like described as Spoofy. Theyre scottish, they might think it's rhyming slang from a london journo.

Just got a CD in today's mail that I've gotta throw into contention. The Resurrection Sorrow's Hour Of The Wolf is sludgy stoner doom with a vocalist who sounds like a Rob Zombie impersonator (ends lots of lines with "yeah"), but the vocal style works a lot better in this context than it does over the top of cheesy faux-industrial strip-club rock. They might be my favorite new NYC band, just because they're one of the few NYC-and-environs metal bands that doesn't sound like someone's thesis project or installation soundtrack. I mean, I like Krallice and Liturgy, but New York rarely produces metal - or any other kind of rock, for that matter - with real balls anymore.

I'd say that Lightning Bolt are a lot more metal than a lot of things on this thread but not really being a genre fascist I'm not bothered.

And, I've always thought they were a good band. All of their albums (maybe bar Hypermagic Mountain) are really good.

This has got nothing to do with Pitchfork/ATP/people with beards coming in their pants just because a band aren't playing on stage and are a bit noisy and are this month's band du nos jour for dead eyed hipster cunts.

They are far more metal, for example, than SunnO))) or Gnaw Their Tongues or Khanate . . .

I didn't nominate the LB album even though it's in my top 20 for 09 overall but it's all good with me - they do most of the same button-pushing for me that really great metal does. I didn't really hear much metal in the Crippled Black Phoenix album (but they have the member legacy I guess) or the Oneida album (but it's rad so fuck it it can gatecrash what it wants)

I dunno, at the last Oneida show in Bristol there were quite a lot of metal kids. I wouldn't have nominated it either, but may well vote for it.

they were beloved by stoner rockers for their 1st 5 albums or so, so they get included.

Yeah Oneida has as much claim to be a dub album as a metal album but it is indeed such a rad album it should be counted somewhere.

We really need more voters to make it worthwhile. Last year was like pulling teeth and i worry the novelty will have worn off for some and quite frankly loads didn't vote last time as they saw themselves as a metal dilettante and were reluctant to vote.

Battle of Mice make sludgy noise rock with a crazy, shrieking female vocalist. And that's fine in small doses, but they're not a metal band.

See i like metal lists being all-inclusive, cuz i know plenty of metal fans like other stuff, and tbf a lot of those bands are almost exclusively liked by metal fans anyway!

And if anyone wants the ilx poll to be "more metal" then the only way to do that is if everyone votes. Because if you leave it to the likes of me then Zombi and the like will win!!

honestly, I'll probably struggle to even vote for 10 records. would like to keep my list paired down to stuff I feel really deserves a nod and not just, "hey, I like this band, this was their new one..." (unless the new one rules, obv.)

30 is more than enough, I think. And until someone (Phil?) gives me a definition of metal so I know what's allowed, I think including outliers that appeal primarily to the same audience is not only good but necessary. Otherwise I can't vote for Wardruna because it's really a folk album.

As far as im concerned, if youre on a metal label, get covered by metal mags, are liked by metalheads then you're in. So nominate and vote away.

not sure where that comment came from, but it's clearly bollocks. BoM are essentially isis/neurosis-style post-metal with a female singer, and few people would object to those two bands being on a metal list. I wonder if they're confusing BoM with Made Out of Babies (julie christmas's other band, who are much closer to the noise-rock thing)? or is it the age-old 'women aren't real metal' thing?

I really, really was turned off by Blue Record; I thought the Red Album was good at first, but familiarity actually lessened my initial liking. Blue Record failed not only to grab me like the first but I felt it was a chore to listen to and have yet to make it all the way through in one listening. I keep returning to it hoping it will hook me because many people I respect love it, but after trying again this morning I think it is just hookless and tired. So I would love for something else to top it in the ILX poll.

Okay, I listened twice to that Baroness, having wondered why none of my Metal sources had pimped it. Now, I know: this is retro-rock, for gosh sake, the type of 'progressive' rock that opened the door for the Punk reaction in the '70s, imo.
If one wants to listen to this stuff ( and there's nothing wrong with having simple tastes) then I can recommend this year's Code or last year's Ishahn 'AngL' as being more creative and interesting, not to mention feat better songs, fewer 'filler' garage jams and
more varied ( and well executed) vox.

Ihsahn's 2010 album has a saxophone player on it. If it sounds like Fun House, great, because Emperor fuckin' sucked.
