the FACT list is working great for me. and it is about 100x more interesting than any of the others

and they've only revealed 20 so far

al's has been the best read so far by a lot

Sampling stuff from the FACT list now. It's interesting, e.g., there's a lot of stuff on the list I've never heard before. That's good, as far as it goes (doesn't make their list better than other publications, just less predictable).

I like the quarterly reports that FACT puts on their website. I've found some great music through them.

Considering the fact he wrote about every single album in the list, that's pretty major. I've never had the time to do something like that. If it's an ILX regular, it would be worth checking out. It's just that there's so much worthless dreck to wade through on LargeheartedBoy's lists.

The FACT list is down to #21. Pretty interesting, like an alternate universe where rock doesn't exist except for a few odd token entries of Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, Wilco and Arcade Fire. It reminded me to re-listen to some albums I'd forgotten about, like the Sunn 0)))/Boris collab, The Soft Pink Truth. It also has the most albums in a decade list I've never even heard of:

The FACT list is complete. Not totally surprising, but also not nearly as predictable as other lists. Pretty cool. One more I hadn't heard of:

But he isn't even going for quality-control, is he? It's presented as the most comprehensive survey of year-end (or decade-end) lists available in one place.

Fact Magazine lists are always great. Really hoping they make a best songs of the decade as well.

I didn't intend to criticize LargeheartedBoy. I just meant that it's difficult to weed out the good lists that reflect the collaborative efforts of several people with better writing skills than your average blogger.

huh, FACT list is great, i like it a lot, maybe i should be reading FACt more. the order seems sort of arbitrary, but w/e.

Didn't like some of the choices between Nos. 20 -- 2, but still a lot of good albums on that list.

Have to agree...the FACT Magazine list is far more interesting than the others, which all seem like variations of the Pitchfork list (in other words, a little stuck in an indie rock nostalgia). Putting Burial at #1 is a far more inspired choice than The Strokes, Arcade Fire, or The White Stripes.

definitely agree with the high placements of Untrue, Alcachofa, and This Bliss.

FACT list is great. I sort of expected placings from Benga, Ellen Allien, Jay Haze, Roots Manuva, Hawtin's dex, fx, 909 mix, Omar S, Ghostface, Mr. Lif, Basement Jaxx, Santogold. I also thought that Isolee might take this. But I now have a dozen or so albums to check out. Great!

Herman, you rule. A very interesting list. I'm wondering, did Converge do so well in the year-end polls with those previous albums, or did the latest one help boost opinion of the others? It's also interesting how both Mastodon and Opeth did so well most of the decade, but their most recent didn't even make the list. Cool to see metalhead luv for Fugazi and Shellac. Would have been interesting if the reunited Jesus Lizard came out with an album this year. I'll still buy this issue when I find it.

Is This It? is a good album. I spent a delighted hour browsing that Fact list (with more to come) - have heard of virtually none of it, have heard even less, the writing made me want to hear the rest, so far liking it very much.

carrie brownstein and co. did a whole big end-of-decade thing on her npr blog. (insert npr joke here.)

their 50 most important recordings are in alphabetical order, not numeric. from john adams to amy winehouse. basically 0 out of 50 for surprises.

I contributed a few blurbs to that NPR thing! some fun stuff in there.

That Fact list is terrific.

Not heard the Other People Place, Pantha du Prince or Villalobos albums from the Fact top 20. Are they that good?

And yeah, it's a great list. I love the fact that the Rolling Stone/P4K/Uncut consensus choices are scattered throughout instead of being in Lex-style indie denial so you get Wilco in there but just below Bjorn Torske.

FACT list does stand out and is full of stuff i like/love that wouldn't get a look in elsewhere, but the persisting inclusion and high rank of over-rated 'in every other top 10' LPs still annoys. they can't win. putting both Burial albums in the top 25 just seems silly too.

The Other People Place album is really deep Detroit techno from a Drexciya character - I think it's good but not listened to it for years

poor Drexciya's 'Neptune's Lair' LP came out 10 years ago this month iirc, too late for 90s lists and too early for 00s lists (not that it would get on 99% of them anyway but its probably better than 'Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe' which i also do like)

this is the album i'm most proud to see in the fact list - no ellen & apparat no credibility as far as i'm concerned

That is a great album. Surprised it didn't make the P4K list, actually. They seemed to love it at the time.

Dorian - The Pantha album is a masterpiece for 'Saturn Strobe' alone.

It's sort of very melodic, twinkly, chimey minimal house music. Someone described it as 'glassy' over on their own thread, which is an excellent description.

same point applies w/alcahofa for 'easy lee' and 'dexter'

In case anyone's interested, I compared the Pitchfork, NME, and Rolling Stone top 100 songs lists, and there were 58 songs that appeared on at least two of the three lists.

Hm. METACRITICS Best Artists Of The Decade. Interesting, tho predictable, results.

Not sure if this is appropriate for the Best of Decade Album Lists thread (it sort of fits, since METACRITICS' rating is based on METACRITIC album scores). Couldn't think of a more appropriate existing thread tho.

58 songs that appeared on at least two of the three lists

I've heard all but about 10 of these. I don't feel so completely out of it now.

That MetaCritics list is just odd. It's a strange universe in which those particular artists would be measured as best of the decade. I guess their methodology is pretty transparent, but it doesn't seem to work. I think they end up making a list of critical darlings who slogged through the decade making lots of generally well-reviewed albums that never really broke through.

It may be transparent, but it's convoluted. Sometimes a METASCORE will be, say, 83 on 10 reviews, but only one of the reviews scores the disc at 83 or higher. Put differently, METACRITIC's special formula includes some strange weighting of scores. I still find it an invaluable website.

xp I got some publicity email saying Kirk from Metallica named some Dengue Fever song his #2 or 3 track of the decade, but I haven't seen the rest of that list.

The other problem is that a lot of albums get such a high rating because only 3-4 publications (in Metacritic's active list) that rated it. Whereas albums that are more widely reviewed generally get a lower average because there's more chance of dissenting opinions. Still, it makes the list plenty different from all the others.

i don't know how anyone ever really comes up with a "best of decade" list

even within this decade my tastes have swerved around so wildly that things that meant a huge amount to me 5 years ago mean nothing now. and the things i love now, how will i know if i'll feel the same way, looking back in another 10 years?

how do people actually make these decisions?

xpost -- i made mine by going back and re-doing my best-of lists for each year of the decade, and then just kinda keeping and eliminating stuff from there based on gut instinct. it's not an exact science, but if you're committed to making a list then at the end you've got one.

Yeah, I did pretty much the same thing. I tried to only keep stuff that I still feel passionate about, but I also threw in a few albums I've since softened on, just out of recognition for how much they meant to me at the time. Like, if I ever considered an album my #1 of its year, then it deserved to be on the list, regardless of how much I play it now.

Obviously, any method or criterion is debatable, though.

i've been freelancing for a few years and was making OCD end-of-year lists for a few years before that (sometimes just for singles, not albums), so i had lists for most years and did new ones more recently for years i didn't make a list at the time.

I certainly changed my mind on some albums as the decade progressed, but not that radically. I was in my 30s, and my tastes haven't changed that much. Nevertheless, making such lists does take time, and is not for the weak. If you're afraid to confront your true feelings about your favorite albums, perhaps some mushrooms or peyote will help. Or perhaps it's best you not attempt it.

I posted my lists from 2002 to 2007 online, so I was able to easily refer to them. 2000-01 involved some reconstructing (though I remembered what my favorite album of each year was), and I threw together lists for 2008-09 on the fly.

I'll be honest: I spent the majority of September listening to about 120 albums from this decade so I could narrow them down to a top 50.

best thing abt these lists is when they throw up some band u haven't thought about in years (e.g. cex, enon on SD's list)

I've been watching it. I like your lists, even if I don't usually like a lot of stuff that appears on them. But you definitely come up with some of the most independent-looking and most international lists (the latter especially for a non- "world music" best of list). That list, the artists list, is the only way I can look back at the decade, because it became so difficult to establish yourself and burn-in as a recording artist after about 2004/5. I would love to see one that whittled away bands who were already established pre-Internet/media changeup. I think you'd have about 20 left.

Horrible list. Double Dylan. Moldy Peaches? DJ Shadow? I'm not into a lot of the more radio-friendly stuff either, but I'm more willing to write that off as my own limitations. (I don't like Kanye West or M.I.A. that much, but I can at least understand the enthusiasm more than for some of the other stuff.)

Both Xgau & Jody Rosen list that Brad Paisley song "Then" (Xgau for decade, Rosen for '09) which was pretty much the worst song on the album.

I used to like to criticize Christgau back when he was still the "Poobah." But people, come on, the man lost his main gig and is 68 years old, give him a break! How many people do you know over 65 who listens to new music they can't find at Walmart, or even listens to anything from the past 30 years? Do any of you twentysomething fucks really think your tastes will be even remotely relevant in 2040??

the only album on xgau's list that i would listen to now is the go-betweens one. cuz i love that one about the surfing magazines. i don't care how old he is its a pretty boring list. to me. obviously. i'm sure there are plenty of people who still jam out to stankonia or love and theft at the gym whilst doing their cardio workouts or during a power walk thru the park.

Scott, you might like that Brad Paisley album if you heard it! I know you have liked songs by him before. I've never loved his stuff before, but that's a really good album. Those Gogol Bordello ones are good too -- Not Top-20-of-Decade good, for me anyway (neither is Paisley), but still good. So are a few other ones he named. And like I said, it's not like anybody else's best-of-decade lists are inspiring me much, either. Plus my tastes haven't aligned with Xgau's for the past quarter-century. (I never even liked the Go-Betweens! And he totally picks the wrong Drive By Truckers album! I don't know if I've ever head Wussy; what do they sound like???) Wussy is the guy from the Ass Pony's new band. He and his girlfriend share vocals. They're pretty heavy alternative rock, much less rootsy than the Ass Ponys. Some of their best songs are Shunt, Rigor Mortis and Airborn, all easy to hear online.

i can't remember xgau ever turning me on to anything, to be honest. he hates soooooo much stuff that i dig. and i've never been that big on the stuff he loves. AND i realize that LOTS of people like a lot of those records a bunch. that's fine. still pretty boring though. i like oddball lists. what can i say, i'm an oddball. i'm not hating on the guy. he's still one of the only people writing about music that i can read with (some) interest who differs so totally from me and my tastes. (mostly cuz i think he's a good writer.)

he's kind of a crank. does crank equal oddball? as far as what he likes, he's in line with a lot of other trad/boring critics, isn't he? putting two wussy albums on your list is like putting two hold steady or two paul westerberg albums on your list. the only people who ever listened to ass ponys were rock critics and the long-suffering women who loved(tolerated) them.

Am I forgetting somebody, or is this the most unrelenting (and, not to hedge any bets, best) punk debut since the glory days of Ramones-Pistols-Clash? OK, Wire, but really. When the big loud production by Clash/Pistols veteran Bill Price, tweaks classic riffs for hard rock oomph, the riffs carry the power surges, and except for the fame one, the songs live up to the underlining. Amanda Rootes's sex life is at best a draw, but she knows its garish details thoroughly enough to convince anyone willing to stand up there while she spits them out that sooner or later she'll walk away with a victory. Her rage doesn't mean she's strong--it means she's hellbent on getting there. A

The Dean has some uh, unique pet artists that he champions. Amy Rigby, Northern State, Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson, Fluffy, Buck 65, Imperial Teen, etc. But out of all his A or A- records in a given year, at least 70% are right up my musical alley, which makes the consumer guide essential reading.

I do wish, just for the sake of this exercise, Xgau had limited himself to one album per artist. Then again, since his annual top tens are online and he doesn't second-guess himself much, there's no way a decade list of his could be surprising.

he's kind of a crank. does crank equal oddball? as far as what he likes, he's in line with a lot of other trad/boring critics, isn't he? putting two wussy albums on your list is like putting two hold steady or two paul westerberg albums on your list. the only people who ever listened to ass ponys were rock critics and the long-suffering women who loved(tolerated) them.

it's BECAUSE he listens to so much music that i wish his lists/likes were a little more left field. not saying he doesn't champion stuff that nobody knows about... i dunno, after all this time and after a zillion records listened to and the moldy peaches album is one of the greatest recordings of the decade? okay, he's an oddball. he's perverse anyway.

even if you look at the rest of the list there's like nothing from the past few years. apparently music died sometime in 2005?

What are the ethics of making a top 100 list with an extra 20 or 40 albums on it? I CANNOT CHOOSE AND IT IS DRIVING ME KRAZEE.

Well, some people have always done that weird thing where they have a top "ten," but with, say, three albums (or movies -- a NY Times film critic did this last week I think!) tied for sixth place, and three more tied for "seventh," etc.; in other words, they just pretend ties have no effect on what the next placement would be. Totally unethical, if you ask me (plus it looks weird), but hardly unprecedented. That way, 120 or 140 albums in your top 100 should be easy!

I'm already hella cheating by only having one album per artist. Might as well go all the way.

See, I totally believe in the one-album-per-artist rule. The last thing I want to look at is a list filled with the same artists over and over again. Just tell me which album is the best, how much you like it, and move on. If you can't come up with 100 artists who you think were relevant over the course of a decade, you should lose your list-making privileges imo.

Better yet: One album per record label! (If you're gonna make arbitrary limitations, go whole hog, I say!)

i don't know how much more wussy i'll listen to, but at least he got me to do that. pretty much the most any enthusiast can hope for.

The double Wussy had the same effect on me too, with the same results. (Although I complained about Dylan being on the list twice, I don't have anything against critics listing one artist more than once on lists like these. I don't think Dylan deserved it for those albums, one of which I regret to say I actually bought, but I'm not much of a Dylan lover.)

It was pretty much just for my own self-preservation, as I would have melted down trying to decide between albums by artists I love. I will guarantee that Wussy will not be on my list.

Can we talk about the structural constraints that have limited the ballz list to exclusively male ballz? And how at some level P4K is to blame for this? I think there is a great deal of valuable discussion to be mined from this topic.

In all seriousness, though, I'm really digging MattDC's list. Familiar enough that I don't have any signposts with regards to where my taste sits relative to the list, but lots and lots of good stuff that I haven't gotten much of a chance to sample. (At least thus far). That Devdas re-imagining is something that I had no idea existed and def. want to check out (both the movie and the soundtrack)

Put this in the context of, say, a 60s list. Would you have wished they'd only list one each by Beatles/Stones/Dylan/VU/Coltrane/Hendrix. Overwhelmed by the multiple choices, will you never get around to listening to any of them?

A list w/ only one artist by each of those would probably be a lot less boring and eyeroll-worthy, yes.

i kinda limited myself to no more than 2 albums by the same artist on my top 100, although it was more that seeming just right than me deciding on that as a rule -- lots of artists made 2 albums i really loved in the last decade, but noone really made 3, or at least the third best wasn't so great that i had a hard time excluding it. previous decades are definitely more homogenous as far as the same artists popping up, but part of that's just a lot less people making records before.

Enjoying the Maximum Rocknroll staff decade Top Tens. Aside from the Observers and Dillinger Four, I don't recognize much outside of what eventually went to Matador and Sub Pop--Fucked Up, Jay Reatard, Pissed Jeans (none of which I'm a huge fan of, but I buy the idea that they made better recordings earlier).

Flipping through the list... kudos for including Joy Shapes, The Drift, Vocalcity, Laulu Laakson Kukista, Aaliyah, Endless Summer, Berlinette, Pop, Tronic, The Tired Sounds of..., This Bliss, Beauty and the Beat, Saint Dymphna, Lisbon (#26!!), Donuts, New Amerykah... these are all excellent and I'd like to see them more consistently on decade-end lists.

Nina Nastasia showed up, dropped excellent albums for those ten years exploring and expanding a very distinct style, then stopped.

Deerhoof had a great five-album run from 2002's Reveille to 2007's Friend Opportunity. But they also had 3 other albums in the decade that I think are OK at best.

also, i admit grudgingly, Kanye had his 3 best albums, and 808s was influential, at least.
