DAMN THE CANON! It's the Alternate 1970s Albums Poll on ILX — Nominations Thread (Due by 11:59pm GMT, December 7th)

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

ILX has polled the ‘70s before, and it was reasonably successful. A lot of albums that always populate lists of this type were represented. The order they were represented in may or may not be agreeable five years later, but most of them are there. THIS POLL is not a complete redo, rather an ALTERNATE gathering of albums that represent a deeper, more interesting decade than the one always portrayed in these lists. Everything that ranked in the top 100 of the original poll is off limits for nomination this time. Houses of the Holy? Gone. There’s a Riot Goin’ On? Not this time. Grievous Angel? Try again.

Now you don’t have to waste valuable ballot space voting for albums that we already know we love. This is your chance to do a little more crate digging and make a rich and diverse list of nominees. Even better, the top 10 or 20 (or the entire list, for that matter) shouldn’t be predictable in any way.

Wow us with your personal favorites during the nomination process. Damn the canon!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

Various artists compilations and best-of/greatest hits collections are eligible, provided they were originally arranged and released between 1970 and 1979. ALSO, EP'S ARE ELIGIBLE. If they're not accounted for here, then where amirite?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

Joni Mitchell - The Hissing of Summer Lawns

Paul in Santa Cruz, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait, first of all: how many can each of us nominate (or is it unlimited)?

Paul in Santa Cruz, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

Unlimited.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

The only two albums in that top 100 I'd nominate anyway are Chairs Missing and 154! I mean, I love a whole load of 'em, but those are the only two I'd feel the need to nominate.

I don't totally understand the aim of this. Are you discouraging the nomination of big obvious albums that somehow missed the first poll (like, say, Who's Next), or are those fair game along with the more obscure stuff?

xp If it didn't make the final 100 the first time around, it's up for grabs this time (regardless of how popular it is). For the most part, though, this list will end up populated with less familiar, more interesting albums. The goal isn't obscurity. Just downplaying familiarity.

Everything looks like it was a comp assembled and released in 1995. Is this right? RYM shows a 7-song compilation from 1979 that's self-titled. xxxp

I like this kind of party! If polling obscure 70s albums is wrong, I don't want to be right. Many thanks Johnny Fever. Good thing I arranged my iPod by year.

Here are some just from 1971. I had to go back and recheck some of these three or four times because I couldn't believe they were still eligible. Like Who's Next. Or Every Picture Tells A Story. Now, I appreciate Kraftwerk as much as the next dude, but how could some of these not make it the first time around? It's like, gag me with a spoon, people!

xpost--While typing this Who's Next got nominated.

It's a little late for that, but then again you're the one doing the work.

It's cool, I guess I can handle it if they keep coming like they have (but I suspect they'll die down a little if people Ctrl+F what's here already).

Does ...For The Whole World To See by Death count as 70s album? If so, that. Pretty good chance of a high placing, I'd have thought.

nate woolls, Thursday, 3 December 2009 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

Who's heard it though?

Yes, but enough for it to do well in this poll?

President Keyes, Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

Ok fair enough. But excluding it on the grounds of "would enough people vote for it to do well in this poll?" is a bit ridiculous.

Thanks anyway though (xpost).

nate woolls, Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

Who said anything about excluding anything?

E Poxy Thee Thule (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:04 (fifteen years ago)

I got the impression that you were saying that not many people had heard it, therefore it won't do well in the poll, so what's the point in including it.

nate woolls, Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

No no, I was a bit taken aback when you said it had a good chance of a high placing, that's all

E Poxy Thee Thule (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:08 (fifteen years ago)

Oh ok, fair enough. I would've placed it pretty highly, fwiw.

nate woolls, Thursday, 3 December 2009 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

"Radioactivity" by Kraftwerk should also be in there.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

It's already been mentioned, but I'm going to rep hard for Bowie's "Alladin Sane", a massively underrated album.
Also, if live albums count, the Dame's "David Live" AKA "David Live at The Tower Philadelphia".
And also Fox's self titled debut LP.

so says surgeon snoball (snoball), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

Man it is super-weird to me that two Kraftwerk albums placed highly last time and "Autobahn" wasn't there at all, but if I can give it a big fat vote this time then it's all OK (even if this might defeat the original intention of this poll to dig up obscurities)

(I hope we get a lot of votes - getting the 80s poll down to 30 was tough and if there's gonna be a shortlist of over 700...)

Some nominations:
King Crimson - Red
Giorgio Moroder - From Here to Eternity (LP)
Black Devil Disco Club - s/t
10cc - Sheet Music
Mort Garson - Plantasia

Thanks!

subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

These were also obviously not in the original Top 100:
Genesis: Foxtrot
Genesis: Selling England By The Pound

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

it's all OK (even if this might defeat the original intention of this poll to dig up obscurities)

Well, again, digging up obscurities isn't the whole intent. Just a happy byproduct. I'm really starting to worry, as pointed out above, that half the list will be a 50-way tie with 1 place votes only.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:45 (fifteen years ago)

This poll is going to be a bit of a sausage party. Can we try to get more women/female performers in here?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

The first Pretenders album was apparently released in 1979 in the UK? Dunno if that counts.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

I'm really starting to worry, as pointed out above, that half the list will be a 50-way tie with 1 place votes only.

^ Don't have ordered ballots then, just give everything 1 point.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

RYM has one 1979 listing for Germany, but everything else there is 1980 and ALL of the listings on Discogs say 1980. Feels like a cheat to include it.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

Fair enough. : )

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

Don't have ordered ballots then, just give everything 1 point.

It's a possibility. People really like weighting votes, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

The Units - High Pressure Days EP

1. YES
2. where were you to vote for the Units album in the 80s poll ;_;
3. totally psyched to hear the reissue but made the mistake of Christmas-wishlisting it so now I can't just buy it for myself

sorry, back to your scheduled alternative 70s chat

subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

xxp Believe me, I was bummed there was no Pretenders showing in the '80s poll. If I could legitimately cram it into this list, I would.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, who the heck are the Units?

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:04 (fifteen years ago)

All Tomorrow's Sausage Parties

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

There are definitely a few, but it looks like it's working out to a relatively small percentage. I realize that lots of female performers in the 1970s had more recognizable singles than albums, but it's worth trying to stretch our brains to find the classic albums that are out there.

I AGREE WITH THE COSMETIC SURGERY (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

Might it ultimately be less of a headache to limit everyone to nominating a certain number of albums? Like ten or something? I know that's gonna be a bitch with ppl who typed out like 50 of the damn things but tbh I looked at their list and kinda thought "come on play fair"

I AGREE WITH THE COSMETIC SURGERY (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

I AGREE WITH THE COSMETIC SURGERY (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

"154" - has that been nominated yet?

E Poxy Thee Thule (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

I came to that conclusion somewhere in the middle of the thread as it currently stands (a limit of 15), but it would be so buried that no one would ever see it. All they would see is the "Unlimited." post at the very top. xxp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Music From The Motion Picture

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

Whensit close?

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

xp it's already in there ("Various Artists" was the most workable categorization)

Whensit close? 14 Dec or 1000 nominations. Which ever comes first.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, who the heck are the Units?

Short answer is some Devo-esque synthpunks, though I'm sure someone more eloquent could do them more justice. Or I'll let them do it themselves with an audio-only youtube.
(prob their best track and the lead track of DJM's nomination, though this is iirc the rerecorded version from their 1980 LP should anyone feel pedantic)

Sorry for (mostly) off-topic, again

brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

i have a couple more noms--

Hugh Masekela - I Am Not Afraid
Sumeria - Golden Tears
Jan Hammer Group - Melodies
Bumblebee Unlimited - Sting Like a Bee
Alan Parsons Project - I, Robot
Gilberto Gil & Jorge Ben - Gil e Jorge
Linda Lewis - Fathoms Deep

max, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago)

Looking at that list, the ones I'm going to be voting for are the most canonical things on it - everyman's got to be allowed to vote too, but I feel like that's defeating the purpose rather.

I was giving a bit of thought to avoiding the 50-way tie, I think this might work:
- allow a very large list of votes each (say 50 or more)
- ordered 50-1 or whatever (maybe a bit extra for the top few positions)
- plus a fifty-point premium for getting on a list at all

I always feel like broadly-popular-but-nobody's-absolute-favourite records lose out in these polls. Tuomas's worked very well.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

i.e. an album gets the premium each time it gets a vote - effectively the points would be 100-51 on each ballot

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

So, like, if there are two ballots with "Grateful Dead - American Beauty" on them, but on one ballot it's #20 and on another ballot it's #15, then they're scored as 30+50 for 80 points and 35+50 for 85 points for a total of 165 points?

Not sure I understand the benefit of a premium. 65 points w/o premiums or 165 with them.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

I do

It means that two sets of votes that list an album lowdown is worth more than one voter who lists the album highly. Or, smooths it out a bit.

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Oh okay, I get it now.

Lydia Lunch - Queen of Siam

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

Re: Gil e Jorge (been nominated twice thus far). From what I can tell based on RYM and Discogs is that Ogum Xangô is the name of the album as it was first issued, and has subsequently been retitled Gil e Jorge for all its reissues. Does anyone know if this is right?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Dave Holland - Conference of the Birds
Univers Zero - Heresie
Area - Crac!
Thad Jones & Mel Lewis - Consummation
Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity (Not entirely sure -- perhaps i prefer Summun..., ah well)
Betty Carter - The Audience With Betty Carter
McCoy Tyner - Sahara (Haven't actually listened to this in years, but I used to love the hell out of it -- need to revisit!)

Øystein, Thursday, 3 December 2009 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, certain that Gil e Jorge and Ogum Xangô are one and the same - I had been confused as to why my copy had that other title on it too. Would love to know what 'ogum xangô' actually means.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 December 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

thx.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

x-post my copy (cd on verve) has gil e jorge on the spine and front, but there is the ogum xangô cover as liner notes iirc

Pink Floyd - The Wall

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

If nominations are unlimited, why have nominations at all? Why don't we just go straight to voting? Will this somehow make tabulation easier?

o. nate, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yes.

Mark G, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Hi guyz. I wasn't sure which items this would benefit most, so in a fit of aspie work-timewasting with Excel I ran Tuomas's 80s poll results through it. Results are on the 80s thread, here:
Now this is how it started: THE ILX 1980s ALBUM POLL RESULTS!!

People who hate big lists with numbers should not click that link.

(Was gonna put the .xls on google docs, but it won't upload, possibly because I wanted to keep the worksheet functions in so other people could fiddle with tweaking the bonus and sorting it too if they so desired)

brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I guess it will be easier to tabulate the votes, but it looks like tabulating the nominations while verifying eligibility and eliminating duplicates will be a huge pain in the you know what.

o. nate, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

If it's a free vote then each person ordering/punctuating/spelling titles slightly differently will make tabulation a pain, whereas if there's a "shortlist" (uhh) to work from and copy/paste from it'd be a lot easier to automate.

But, more importantly to me, the self-centred voter, I'd never remember everything I wanted to vote for in a free vote, but a list lets people go "oh yeah, that one's awesome". There's a bunch of stuff on this thread that I wouldn't have remembered but will definitely vote for.

(So arguably just talking about it does the job, but the incentive of "official nominations thread" makes people a bit more inclined to post and to include things which might otherwise seem too obvious to bother discussing, I suppose.)

Hmmmm. Not sure about that 50 point bonus mechanism. That rewards broad popularity instead of intense love.

What is more valuable, a record that is deeply cherished by a smaller amount of people, or a record that more people like, but not necessarily love?

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 3 December 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, I'd have to look it up in Record Collector.

I feel weird about Chronicle Vol. 1 being nominated, since most of the material on there is from the 1960s and the songs that aren't were already nominated as part of Cosmo's Factory. Chronicle is just a 5-star top-to-bottom kind of album, so I can't imagine it not picking up huge numbers of votes.

I mean, it falls within Johnny Fever's criteria for compilations, so if it's cool with him, it's cool with me.

Elric Harris and Dylan Kobold (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

Think everything I'd vote for has been nominated apart from:

Claude Denjean - Moog! Claude Denjean and the Moog Synthesiser
Nilsson - Aerial Pandemonium Ballet
Nilsson - A little touch of Schmillsson in the night
Nina Simone - Here Comes the Sun
Nina Simone - Emergency Ward
Sister Sledge - We are Family
Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free

btw I think Damn the Canon would be a great name for a band.

Elric Harris and Dylan Kobold (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

I feel weird about Chronicle Vol. 1 being nominated,

Yes. Maybe there should be a rule: Greatest hits records shouldn't count if the material is available on previously released albums. The exception should be for records like Singles Going Steady and Louder Than Bombs, which compile a bunch of 45s in one place for the first time.

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmmm. Not sure about that 50 point bonus mechanism. That rewards broad popularity instead of intense love.

Having compared and contrasted both sets of 1980s album results, I agree: the method which Tuomas used works better. Otherwise you end up with "yeah, quite like this" mid-placings being given undue prominence, which makes for a more predictable and less, um, passionate list.

I can't believe "Curtis" by Curtis Mayfield didn't make it in the previous 70s poll! It's only like the best soul album of all time! Why do people prefer the inferior "Superfly" to it?

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

ashra - blackouts
amon düül - paradieswarts düül
throbbing gristle - 20 jazz funk greats (am i really the first to mention it?!)

psychgawsple, Thursday, 3 December 2009 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Hm. Is there anything we can do to ensure that this doesn't just become an alternate-but-still-canonical list? Or does that even matter? It sort of reminds me of when Popmatters (I think) did a list of the #101-200 greatest albums of all time in the hopes of getting some unsung favorites in there, but still ended up with the usual suspects.

My nominees (sorry for any repeats):

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

It will be interesting to see what happens to the voting in the absence of the usual consensus faves. Will new consensus picks emerge and establish their dominance, with large vote totals separating them from the second tier, as we saw in the 80s poll? Or will the results be broadly flatter, with only small point differences separating the top vote-getters from the rest? It might shed some interesting light on the social phenomenon of consensus formation.

Fela Kuti - Afrodisiac
Fela Kuti - Shakara
Fela Kuti - He Miss Road
Fela Kuti - London Scene
Fela Kuti - No Agreement

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

I totally agree with this. It's a one my top 10 favourite albums of all time.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

That was me agreeing with Tuomas about Curtis by the way!

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, when polling time comes, I can't really imagine anything else being my #1.

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

i can see why you would want to ban the same old suspects that always appear in any top 50 but leaving out albums that didnt even make the top 70 but just got in the 100 like maggot brain is silly. Its not like Funkadelic ever get in lists by Rolling Stone/NME/Q/Mojo etc.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the only album I would rate higher from the 70's would be the first Roxy Music album which is out.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

Btw, since I nominated a Finnish folk rock album no one else besides me has probably even heard, I thought it'd be fair to include a link where you can listen to it in full:

but they are canon albums, so hardly damn/fuck the canon if theyre in yet stuff thats just sneaked in the top 100 last time gets excluded.
if youre going to call it no canon then there must be no canon

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

Moka's list reminded me I missed this on my list of noms:

The Revolutionary Ensemble - The Revolutionary Ensemble

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

Here's some more. I was forgetting these two:

Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú (1975)
Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del Presente (1977)

Derelict: A couple of those albums have already been mentioned upthread but that is a great list.

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

1978
Black Devil - Disco Club

Oh, this is what I was attempting to nominate earlier, but this ^^ is the correct title, not what I put (in case you didn't already know/realise)

brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking that it will be almost impossible for me to pick only 30 out of these list of nominees. There's just so many good stuff in here... in the 80's albums list I ended up picking at least 10 albums that I wasn't madly in love with, but this time I could easily pick 50 albums of the 70's which I couldn't live without. And that's without counting the canonical ilx list.

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

Peter Hammill - Nadir's Big Chance (75)
Julius Hemphill - Dogon A.D. (72)
Bobby Charles - Bobby Charles (72)
Alpha Band - Alpha Band (76) (extra point for turning Dylan on to Jesus!)

that's why i asked JF to clarify the rules of the poll way up at the beginning of the thread, and those albums are fine. besides, how many truly canonical albums are there that were shut out last time? if the whole top 20 of this poll is obvious canonical stuff, that still leaves 80 spots of interesting surprises.

some dude, Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

a boring one if its going to be tusk and aja in the top spots!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

they won't be in the top spots

some dude, Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

How can anything be boring if it has Tusk? I'm looking forward to lending it my vote.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 December 2009 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even know what Aja is? Wasn't she an ILX poster? Tusk sounds kinda more familiar, but I couldn't tell what band it is by.

Okay, people take a break from nominations for a while so I can catch up and weed out dupes, etc. I'm sure we'll have reached 1,000 by this point...

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

You already had the brilliant idea of not limiting nominations, and you see where it got us. Plus, you've already said you weren't even going to vote in this poll if you couldn't vote for Maggot Brain, so maybe you can leave it alone now.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Good point abanana! I was thinking of the one on the right, not the OST.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

But people complaining about other people's hard work is an important part of these polls too! xp

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

right fine, i wont vote or nominate if that's what you want. remove the nominations i made if you really want to.

Debris' Static Caravan

lol this should be 'static disposal'

an error has occurred (electricsound), Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe use something like Acclaimed Music to weed out canon from non-canon?

Parenthetical Grillz, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

The extent of my weeding out will be dupes, albums in the original 100 and albums not released between 1970-79.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 3 December 2009 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

Aiight then. But how's this going to be different from just looking at #101-200 from the last poll, except for with slightly different participants?

Parenthetical Grillz, Thursday, 3 December 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

What is this, twenty questions? Johnny Fever is the man for organizing this. We should be thanking him for bringing a little more joy into our lives.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 4 December 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

Like I told (some dude) way way upthread, the objective of the poll is not to celebrate obscurity, but to downplay familiarity. Popular albums will still be scattered throughout the results, but I think there'll be just as many unfamiliar titles as well.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

note that YES electric sound is right, debris' - static disposal lp IS actually called static disposal. realized and was gonna edit before posting, but i guess i forgot duh. so that should be rectified.

I think it's the second one there... at least was the same one I was thinking of nominating.

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Friday, 4 December 2009 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

Damn. I'm not even a little surprised, but youse guys have already named most of my noms (even, like, The Flying Lizards and Syreeta!). Even so:

Yoko Ono - Plastic Ono Band
Yoko Ono - Fly
War - Youngblood
Stevie Wonder - Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants
Laura Nyro - Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat
Faust - Faust V (assuming it counts)
Essential Logic - Beat Rhythm News
(American) Spring - Spring
Booker T. & The MGs - Uptight
The Beach Boys - Surf's Up
The Beach Boys - Carl and the Passions - "So Tough"
Mandrill - Composite Truth

And if compilations of '70s material by a single act (who never released an album in the '70s) are eligible, I'd like to nominate The Sisters Love - Give Me Your Love.

Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 4 December 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

I think I've got everything accounted for up through this point. 1,127 nominations so far (and a SHIT LOAD of reggae, as least what I'm guessing is reggae, that I've never even heard of). I feel more enlightened already, and we're not even voting yet.

Williams, Hank 40 Greatest Hits

I know this was released in 1978, but should it stand?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

A few more, tho I do share the concern that people are beginning to just pick records they've heard, not LOVe (ie, JB's The Original Disco Man):

Lem -- Machines
Klaus Schulze -- Moondawn
The Move -- Shazam
Leonard Cohen -- Death of a Ladies Man

God, that is a lot of records (though a lot of really good ones). Would it maybe make more sense for people to have a limit of how many records they can nominate?

Also, "Carl and the Passions -- So Tough" is a Beach Boys record, so it should be listed as one.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 4 December 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't quite sure how to list So Tough, but if people can find it easier under Beach Boys, I'll change it.

And yeah, I'm going to have to stick from this point on with the limit of 15 noms per person. If you haven't nominated anything yet, you get a full 15. If you've already nominated some things, but not a full 15, you can meet that maximum. If you've already nominated more than 15 (or more than 150, in some cases), you're cut off from further nominations! ;)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

Williams, Hank 40 Greatest Hits

I know this was released in 1978, but should it stand?

― Johnny Fever

Various artists compilations and best-of/greatest hits collections are eligible, provided they were originally arranged and released between 1970 and 1979. ALSO, EP'S ARE ELIGIBLE. If they're not accounted for here, then where amirite?

― Johnny Fever

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Friday, 4 December 2009 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

but I wont get feisty if you decide to exclude it.

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Friday, 4 December 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

I know it technically meets the requirements, but the guy died in 1953!

I have a copy of 40 Greatest Hits. I think it was a huge seller. Did it somewhat revive Williams' popularity upon its release in 1978? If so, I could see why it would be nominated/voted for. Otherwise it just strikes me as odd, even if it does meet the requirements.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

cannot believe Rock Bottom didn't place in the first poll

abanana, Friday, 4 December 2009 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

I honestly have no idea if it helped revive Williams' popularity at some point. I just nominated because it is awesome. You know what? just exclude it, but if you ever bump into that particular comp do not hesitate cashing for it.

feisty, Spanish, girl (Moka), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

Cornell Campbell's Dance In a Greenwich Farm (1975) and The Gorgon (1976).

I think La Dusseldorf s/t and 'First' are the same, ie erase First and keep the s/t. My error.

Amon Düül II Paradieswarts Düül

this album is by Amon Düül, not Amon Düül II

psychgawsple, Friday, 4 December 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

It's a huge list, and will probably get a little bigger before it's all over, but I think it will be navigable for voting purposes when segmented into A, B, C, etc.

(Also, I credited A Clockwork Orange to Walter instead of Wendy, as that's how it was listed in 1971.)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

Cobham, Billy A Funky Side of Things

This album is actually called "A Funky Thide of Sings" (i.e. it's a Spoonerism).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 07:34 (fifteen years ago)

Someone nominated, then withdrew, a Fairouz album - could someone renominate one please to give me a kick to check it out? I'd do it myself, but she released about 40 albums in the 70s and I wouldn't know where to start.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 December 2009 07:36 (fifteen years ago)

Here's a few more nominations I didn't remember yesterday...

Herbie Hancock: Sunlight (1977)
Chaka Khan: Chaka (1978)
Billy Cobham: Spectrum (1973)
Miriam Makeba: Pata Pata - The Hit Sound of Miriam Makeba (1972)
Minnie Riperton: Adventures in Paradise (1975)
Return to Forever: Musicmagic (1977)

Tuomas, Friday, 4 December 2009 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

I put the one that was nominated back in. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

Splendid, thanks.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 December 2009 07:56 (fifteen years ago)

a few:

herbie hancock - flood
larry young - lawrence of newark
gil-scott heron & Brian Jackson - bridges
mtume - rebirth cycle
the gladiators - trenchtown mix-up
Burning Spear - Marcus Children
Milton Nascimento - Milagre dos Peixes
Nelson Angelo e Joyce - s/t

DustyLoops, Friday, 4 December 2009 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 10:37 (fifteen years ago)

Someone nominated, then withdrew, a Fairouz album - could someone renominate one please to give me a kick to check it out? I'd do it myself, but she released about 40 albums in the 70s and I wouldn't know where to start.

Fairouz, et al.'s Oriental Evening is mostly quite good, so I hereby nominate that. (But the 1960's 2-fer soundtrack CD Safarbarlek/Bint Al-Harass is probably my favorite Fairouz.)

Oh, I see it the other was put back. I still say replace with this, since I don't know what the other one sounds like, but whatever.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 4 December 2009 10:55 (fifteen years ago)

I say let them both in - the list does needs padding out a bit.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

lol

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

I've started segmenting the gigantic master list into alphabetical groupings and it doesn't seem so intimidating that way. The hardest part about voting will be all the versions of your ballot you go through before you send in the final one.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, advice:

1) Go through list, pick out only the ones you really really love, paste to s/sheet

2) Score/Place them each individually 1 to 100, don't worry about duplicates

3) Sort list in descending order, sort out any "whoa, way off" entries

4) Cut list at 100

5) Send.

Mark G, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

I will reject any 100-vote ballots, ffs!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago)

I think I may stick with the 30-album ballot Tuomas used, or stretch it to 40. Anything beyond that will mean I'll be working way to hard for no pay.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:29 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, I forgot how many.

Mark G, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:33 (fifteen years ago)

Just now hearing Gong for the first time (You). zounds! I love this.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

40 might be a good one. If you want to use my point division, then you'll have to adjust it a bit though, as the sum of all points should be a multiple of 40 to allow for unordered ballots. I'm fine with 30 too.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 December 2009 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

With a noms list this big, I'd like to be able to vote for 40.

sonderangerbot, thanks for adding Topography of the Lungs -- I'd forgotten that one.

WmC, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Bring me Sanka or Tetley (Jon Lewis), Friday, 4 December 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, two Hawkwind albums had already been nominated before now.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, you're right. Um... can we add Hawkwind- Quark, Strangeness & Charm? (Cuz it will get a vote from me!)

Bring me Sanka or Tetley (Jon Lewis), Friday, 4 December 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

DavidM, Friday, 4 December 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

My bad, I was thinking it came out in 1969 for some reason. Just checked and, sure enough, it's from 1970.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

(I assume you mean the one with "25 or 6 to 4" on it, aka "II" right?)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

damn thats a lot of albums to listen to before voting time comes around

bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Friday, 4 December 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

I hope more rap albums will show up in this poll than in the 80s poll, that was a disgrace.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 December 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Erm, unless "proto-rap" like Gil Scott-Heron or Last Poets count, I think you might have a bit of a problem with that.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 4 December 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait! Teacher! I've got one more and it's very important!

Armand Schaubroeck- Ratfucker

Bring me Sanka or Tetley (Jon Lewis), Friday, 4 December 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

prediction: this will be the best G.O.A.T. list

it's like 10,000 goons when all you need is a trife (m bison), Friday, 4 December 2009 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

unfortunately most of the nominated albums i have are just canon albums that missed the first list

hoping to check some other stuff out before voting but i don't know if there's anything i'll fall in love with instantly enough to put it on my ballot

bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Friday, 4 December 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

This poll will include almost everything I would put in an unrestricted 70s Top 40, tbh! Except for Can. But even with Steely Dan, two out of my top 3 are in this poll.

Bring me Sanka or Tetley (Jon Lewis), Friday, 4 December 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

don't really want to wait 10 more days to start the voting tbh

WmC, Friday, 4 December 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

I don't either. Maybe we can get a mod to change the close date in the title to this next Monday instead?

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, changed now to the 7th. Voting begins next week!

I just realized I missed two of my favorite albums of the 70s:

Secos e Molhados - Secos e Molhados (1973)
Secos e Molhados - Secos e Molhados (1974)

EZ Snappin, Friday, 4 December 2009 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

We're at 1,231 now.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 December 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

I'm done. I promise.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 4 December 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

oooh meet the residents was a good call

psychgawsple, Saturday, 5 December 2009 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

I'm gonna vote for the obvious (to me) #1 and then 39 unknowns that need more love.

WmC, Saturday, 5 December 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

Steve Martin - Let’s Get Small
Nina Simone - Baltimore
Little Feat - Little Feat

some dude, Saturday, 5 December 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

Oops! Due to some unfortunate brain farting, I ruined some of the spreadsheet in album additions for the past few (saved as web page at one point, but then neglected to keep saving the .xls). So the web page version of all the nominations up through 1,231 is set in stone and a second page/xls will be made for everything that comes after (including the three most recent albums and the Cornell Campbell albums I missed up above).

Just didn't want anyone to think when I publish the final nominations list next week that I was putting anything in a secondary list ghetto w/o a good reason.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 December 2009 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

(Ismael Klata, check your e-mail.)

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 5 December 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

Richard Pryor - That Nigger's Crazy
George Carlin - Class Clown
Robert Klein - Child of the 50's

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 December 2009 09:11 (fifteen years ago)

(Rudi - awesome, thanks!)

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 December 2009 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

I just want to say I am having a blast going through this 70s list. I've known I needed to go back to the 70s and dig around for things I missed at the time, or things I've forgotten, or music I like without ever having registered who recorded it (even when it's kind of obvious now that I know). Maybe I'm just in the right frame of mind, but it seems that these leads are more effective than many I've worked with. Translation: there could be a lot of Sweet, T. Rex, Boz Scags, Fleetwood Mac, Charlie Rich, and 10cc in my listening over the next year.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 5 December 2009 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

This just confirms the 70s is far and away my favorite decade for popular music (at least English language stuff, but maybe globally).

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 5 December 2009 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

On the same note, I can't remember the last time I listened to Reed's Coney Island Baby, but it sounds absolutely stellar this morning.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 December 2009 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

Charles Mingus-Let My Children Hear Music
Exuma-Exuma
Miles Davis-Live Evil
Miles Davis-Dark Magus
Miles Davis-Pangaea

fm, Sunday, 6 December 2009 07:55 (fifteen years ago)

Please add (and incidentally, there is a good chance I will actually vote for this--it's an incredible compilation from 1975):

Ismael Rivera - Eclipse Total

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 6 December 2009 10:37 (fifteen years ago)

This just confirms the 70s is far and away my favorite decade for popular music (at least English language stuff, but maybe globally).

It's turning out that way for me too, I can already see I'm going to get a lot out of this poll.

Gavin in Leeds, Sunday, 6 December 2009 10:45 (fifteen years ago)

Just another day until the vote begins! I'm looking forward to seeing people's ballots.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

how long are we going to have to vote for this? there's about 50 albums i want to relisten to before i can come up with a ballot :(

bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Monday, 7 December 2009 05:42 (fifteen years ago)

Plenty of time. I'm going to be out of town over xmas holidays, so voting probably won't end until right before or right after New Years.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

Suggestion: rather than trying to pick 40 out of 1200+, why not have eliminator heats?

You could run conventional ILX polls of 50 at a time (sorted alphabetically by LP title, rather than artist name, so that not all the Fela and Tangerine Dream albums have to fight each other). The LPs that get 0 votes, say, or just 1 vote are eliminated. Hopefully that will whittle the list down to a more manageable number. You could run all the heats simultaneously for maximum board impact.

The survivors are then eligible for the e-mail poll. It means a wee bit more work for J. Fever but it also means we don't waste points in the final poll on personal touchstones that don't have a prayer.

The heats will also give people a chance to boost said personal touchstones while those polls are running.

Jeff W, Monday, 7 December 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, if you can't pick 40 out of 1,200 you have never been to a record fair.

Mark G, Monday, 7 December 2009 09:58 (fifteen years ago)

I can do it easily - the question is what sort of results will we get with such a wide field? I'm predicting lots of =99th, 1 Vote, 1 First Place Vote type results.

Jeff W, Monday, 7 December 2009 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

We'll never know until we know.

Maybe poll the final results?

Mark G, Monday, 7 December 2009 10:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm worried about albums with just one first place vote making up a lot of the poll, so we'll need a lot of voters. Maybe encourage people who don't ordinarily vote in this type poll to do so, or maybe we can institute that vote "premium" thing discussed earlier if the results start to turn out that way. I dunno.

The thing is, scrolling through the master list of nominations, I can pretty easily pick out things I want to vote for and many, many other things I'm hoping other people vote for so I can learn more about them.

The voting thread will be a great forum for advocacy of everyone's choices.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

What I'd like to see in the voting thread is people telling us what they picked as their #1 and why, especially if it's obscure. I'd be willing to check out a record someone reps hard for, and perhaps vote for it if I like it.

President Keyes, Monday, 7 December 2009 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

I would like to add Janis Joplin - Pearl.

doobieborther, Monday, 7 December 2009 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

If you allow everyone to vote for a really huge number of albums, like 50 or even 100, you should be ok so long as you weight it so that one #1 vote doesn't totally overshadow 3 or 4 lower-placed votes.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 7 December 2009 12:51 (fifteen years ago)

voting for a huge number of albums would also definitely be keeping with the spirit of this poll. maybe 100 is too many? tho tbh i would willingly list 200 if it was asked of me

psychgawsple, Monday, 7 December 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

No way, sorry. It took me long enough to hammer out a point system for a 40-album ballot.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

40 is a good number imo

bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

if everyone votes for 100 all it does is make the long tail longer it won't change the top 100 much

bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Plus it means I will never sleep.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Alright, voting thread coming soon. No more submissions!
