We nominated them all here. We disqualified the 100 winners of the original 2004/05 poll that was held here. The object was to clear out the canonical albums from the 1970s, and make room for albums that could never make a typical Top 100 list. It doesn't mean those overly familiar albums aren't good, but they've already been voted on to death. Here is a poll for all the others.
INSTRUCTIONS
1) This is an email ballot. Send your vote in an email to this address: johnnyilxfever[at]gmail[dot]com. Put the text "ILX 1970s POLL" in your email title, so I know it's not spam.
2) Please include your ILX username to your email. This is to avoid vote rigging. If I start to get a lot of emails with no ILX username in them, I'll have to disqualify them.
3) You can vote for the maximum of 40 albums. You can choose either an ordered ballot or an unordered one. If you choose an ordered ballot, the points will be allotted like so:
1st place: 40 points2nd place: 35 points3rd place: 30 points4th place: 25 points5th place: 15 points6-10th places: 12 points each11-15th places: 9 points each16-20th places: 6 points each21-25th places: 5 points each26-35th places: 3 points each36-40th places: 1 point each
If you send an unordered ballot, the albums on the list will all get 10 points each. Thus, if you vote for 40 albums, you have the total amount of 400 points to allot. If you want to send an ordered ballot, please number the album list. An unnumbered list will be automatically interpreted as an unordered ballot.
4) You may vote for less than 40 albums, but the points will still be alloted according to the system above. For example, if you send an unordered ballot with 20 albums, they will all get 10 points, not 20.
5) You may only vote for the albums on the nomination list. Any votes for albums that are not on the list will be ignored.
6) The voting time ends on Sunday, January 3rd, at midnight GMT. Any ballots sent after that will not be counted.
7) If there's a tie between albums, the total number of votes an album has received will be the tiebreaker. If it's still a tie, the number of #1 votes will be the second tiebreaker.
(*I borrwed the wording/scoring system from Tuomas's '80s poll almost verbatim.)

HERE IS THE LIST. 1,258 CHOICES: http://home.earthlink.net/~pauletc/svnts.htm
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 01:23 (fifteen years ago)
My first run through cut it to 145. That's not going to work, is it?
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 01:58 (fifteen years ago)
OK, sent mine.
― WmC, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
sent!
― an error has occurred (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago)
Phew! Two ballots in and three albums in common between them. This poll's gonna be weird :)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago)
good, the weirder the better
― WmC, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 02:58 (fifteen years ago)
J Fever, for some reason my reply email to you isn't sending, but I've counted my ballot 3 times now and get 40 each time. I'm not sure where the gaps are, but if there are a few maybe it's destiny. :)
― big darn deal (Z S), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:07 (fifteen years ago)
You missed #14 and #15 in your numbering.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago)
btw everyone, I'll send you a confirmation email once I've absorbed your votes into the count.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago)
That's weird, in my sent folder it shows #14 and #15...oh well.
I'll resend my #14 and 15, if it's not too late.
― big darn deal (Z S), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:26 (fifteen years ago)
Sorry, but if it's easy to add missing items to that list, could you add in that Fairouz Oriental Evening album? If it's not easy, don't worry about it, obviously.
― _Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:52 (fifteen years ago)
ZS, 15 is still getting cut off for some reason (does it have weird characters?). I got 14 though. xp
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:53 (fifteen years ago)
You can vote for Oriental Evening if you'd like, because I remember it being mentioned in the nominations thread. I couldn't find anything to verify a release date at the time, so I didn't add it. I just now found something that says 1971, though. xp
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:56 (fifteen years ago)
ZS, I looked at the raw email data and got the album. Weird, dunno why it didn't show up normally. It's added now, though. xxxp
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 04:07 (fifteen years ago)
Brown, James - The Payback is on there twice. Just want to make sure it's not in two slots on your spreadsheet.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 04:34 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks for noticing. Fixed it.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 04:38 (fifteen years ago)
Erk, I went through the nomination list marking the ones I definitely want to vote for, the ones I like but need to listen to again, and the ones I'm sure I'd like but have never heard (yeah, like I'd ever get round to that during the voting period), and the first group alone came to 34. Feeling pretty bad for the second group now cz I'm sure there are way more than 6 in it I'd like to vote for.
PS thanks for your hard work, Johnny.
― brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 10:13 (fifteen years ago)
Amazing list - so far I've only found one record that i wish was there that isn't (Shoot out the Lights), but that's made up for by finding things I neer expected - Keith Cross and Pete Ross! Slapp Happy! Emitt Rhodes! Good work all round.
― sonofstan, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:37 (fifteen years ago)
"Shoot Out the Lights" is from the 80s
― Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, it was nominated in the 80s poll we just had.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:45 (fifteen years ago)
i love this idea btw. will do my ballot later.
― adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:45 (fifteen years ago)
Btw, I think Fela is gonna suffer heavily from vote splitting, since most of his 70s albums sound kinda samey, though they're still universally good. I suspect my favourite album by him (Afrodisiac and He Miss Road) are not necessary the biggest favourites of other Fela fans. But I hope Zombie at least will make it.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:49 (fifteen years ago)
He Miss Road will probably be the one and only Fela on my final ballot.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)
Cool! I just love the sound on that album, I think it was produced by someone else than other Fela albums?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
Btw, I've noticed a few typos in the nomination list:
* The jazz drummer and bandleader is called Idris Muhammad, not Idris Muhammed.
* The Beth Carvalho album is called "Pandeiro e Viola", not "Pandiero e Viola".
* The Meters album is called "Fire on the Bayou", not "Fire in the Bayou".
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)
*shoots out own lights*
Of course it is - I just always think of it as the final one in that great run from 'Bright Lights....' conveniently forgetting Sunnyvista and er, the other not very good one.....
― sonofstan, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)
Now I'm starting to see all these omissions. Fleetwood Mac Kiln House, and even worse, Goat's Head Soup.
― kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)
Typos fixed.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

My nomination for Booker T. - Uptight is missing from your document ;_;
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
A typo:Funkadelic - Cosmic Slop listed as "Cosmic Stop".
I assume this won't affect the tabulation.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
Well as there's never been a poll I've nominated in, I'd say it's more than likely
― Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
Funkadelic typo fixed. Booker T. album is from 1969.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. Thanks!
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)
So does anyone have a lesser-known album they want to make a case for? There's only seven ballots in at this point, so your good words still have plenty of people to influence (hopefully).
For me, I got on a pretty big Kris Kristofferson kick a couple years ago, but it wasn't until this past spring that heard what could possibly be the best thing he's ever been a part of. Full Moon with his wife (at the time) Rita Coolidge. It's similar to Gram Parsons' works with Emmylou, but I think it's ultimately more inviting and the subtext is deeper because they actually were a couple.
(Okay, Kristofferson's first album is probably still his best, but Full Moon comes in a VERY close second.)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
I would like for everyone to hear the first Roches album before they vote. Maybe you can find it lying around somewhere.

Oh yeah, I anticipated more people doing this during/after the holidays. I'm just impatient, ha!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago)
As for championing a lesser known record, I'd like to give props to Pandeiro e Viola by Beth Carvalho. I think Beth Carvalho is not as well as known outside Brazil as other singers of her generation, such as Maria Bethânia or Elis Regina, probably because she's focused more on traditional samba. I think she's a wonderful performer, though, with a strong, somewhat masculine voice. As for "Pandeiro e Viola", it has the strong rhythmic foundation of samba, but there's also an evocative, often melancholy feel in the song selection and arrangements, which I think creates a very potent blend. I'm not the biggest samba enthusiast in the world, but if all samba albums sounded like this, I might be! You can get the whole album here:

Hmmm, looks like the links in that blog work only for premium Rapidshare users... Well, it shouldn't be too hard to find that album on SLSK, for example.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
Rapidshare gets moody midday (US time), but it'll probably be available in a few hours.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah Premium users only means the server's busy, try it in the morning, that seems to be the best time.
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
gonna give this a shot. looks like fun!
― Ivan, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, good to know!
More props for an obscure album: Groove Machine (1979) by the The J.B.'s is their last album, I think. When I first heard it, my mind was blown! This is synth-driven, stripped-down, (mostly) instrumental disco that sounds more like proto-house than what you'd expect from James Brown's backing band. (Brown released a disco album of his own the same year, but it's a much more conventional affair - though quite nice in its own right!) "Rock Groove Machine", the opening track, is especially freaky: it features an continuous, modulating synth whine that makes is sound like it was the origin point acid house. You can get the album here:
http://soulfunkjazz.wordpress.com/2008/03/22/the-jbs-groove-machine-1979/
(x-post)
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
"that makes it sound like it was the origin point of acid house"
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)
Just a note, the album I nominated as Various Artists - New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media is also known in its two subsequent rereleases as New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media: Women in Electronic Music 1977.
While Annea Lockwood and Pauline Oliveros had previous recordings, I think this is the first LP release that Laurie Spiegel, Megan Roberts, Ruth Anderson, or Laurie Anderson appear on.
In all its 320kbps glory
― Biodegradable (Derelict), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
As for The Droids' Star Peace, its a one off French electro-disco album released during the global Star Wars craze, and sounding at least 10 years before its time. Daft Punk's visual schtick is borrowed from them.
Oh, look, here's a copy at rapidshare
― Biodegradable (Derelict), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
Krautrock will rule this poll if all is right in the world. So many great albums left off the initial Top 100 Albums of the '70s list that are nominated here. Don't forget to vote for your Amon Duul, Cluster, Can, Neu!, La Dusseldorf, Harmonia and all that, my dears.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
All things in moderation! (I can tell you, though, that Krautrock is fairly well represented thus far.)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago)
You shouldn't give out any information on the votes you've already got, as it might affect those who haven't voted yet.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:27 (fifteen years ago)
I know the temptation to drop some hints is big, I certainly felt it while counting the 80s poll votes. But saying stuff like "Krautrock is doing well" might make it into a self-defeating prophecy.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
yeah now noone will vote for any krautrock!
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol sorry for the hint!
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago)
I think pretty much all my votes will be for Krautrock records. Though it may give me the impetus to actually bother properly investigating people like Fela Kuti.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:53 (fifteen years ago)
I won't be giving any votes to Krautrock. Never cared about anything with the word "rock" in it, except "Planet Rock" obviously. Plus there's way too many good jazz, funk, soul, MPB, Afro-Cuban, disco, etc. albums on the nomination list already that it feels impossible to cut it down to a top 40.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)
seeing how an album like Neu!75 could be kept off the previous poll i'd say some krautvotes are due. i just hinted one of my top votes...!

Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs Eric Clapton + Duane Allman = Guitar heaven
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A StoryPerfect

This is a little late, of course, but can anyone verify that Omona Wapu by Franco & Rochereau was released in the 1970s? The earliest date I see for it is 1985.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:40 (fifteen years ago)
Wapu, Wapi... whatever
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:48 (fifteen years ago)
Allmusic seems to be the only source saying the album is from 1976, but Christgau's review says 1985 and another source on West African music says it was recorded in 1983, then released in 1985. It's not looking good for Franco & Rochereau.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago)
Okay, two more confirmations that it was recorded in 1983. Naturally, I couldn't verify everything that was nominated before it went up for a vote, so I'm sorry this got included in the final list. If you voted for it, email me again with a substitution (I'll figure out the point alterations if needed).
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago)
Lydia Lunch - Queen Of Siam - recorded 1979, released 1980 AFAIK?

― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 09:17 (fifteen years ago)
I have my own selfish reasons for nitpicking there - I'm trying to get my list down from 70 to 40 and now that's another 1 gone.
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 09:19 (fifteen years ago)

I've been listening pretty much exclusively to music from the '70s for the last two weeks. I've traditionally split my vote between the '60s and '80s as far a my favorite decade(s) for music goes, but I may be changing my mind.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 December 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago)
I'm finding this impossible. I got it down to a Top 200, then a Top 100, but now I'm struggling.
― Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago)
27 ballots in so far. 2 of them unordered. 3 of them with fewer than 40 albums.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:47 (fifteen years ago)
I don't understand how you folks order your ballots. Impossible!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
I can see both sides. When you get down to the bottom of an ordered list, you feel like giving an album you love a measley 5 (or 3 or 1) points is sort of selling it short. But at the same time, you cheat your OMGFAVORITE album out of 30 points if you vote unordered.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago)
Ordered is better, if possible, but difficult!
― Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

― WmC, Saturday, 12 December 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)
The 80s one was really a lot of fun, even though I was familiar with almost all of the top 100. The nominations process in this one dropped a lot of names on me I'd never even heard before. I'll be checking out some of these albums for the rest of my life.

Even at owning only 218 (my first cut) of these, that's still a higher percentage that I own versus the ones that won the other poll. Which makes me feel kinda weird.
― Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Doing the "hard work" of relistening to a lot of stuff that I just kind of take for granted.
― Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Monday, 14 December 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago)
I'm saving my ballot until the very end, because going through the list is leading to a lot of great discoveries. (Maybe more people are doing that.)
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 December 2009 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
yeah...i went on emusic the other day and DL'd 3 albums from the nominations list that I'd been wanting to hear
― some dude, Monday, 14 December 2009 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
I think there's a few nominees in my article: Between The Cracks: Great bands that slipped between the cracks of glam, prog, art rock, metal and punk, 1973-1978 & accompanying mix. At least Crack The Sky, Heavy Metal Kids, Sparks, Sweet and 10cc. I thought I nominated Cockney Rebel's The Best Year's Of Our Lives but I guess not.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 14 December 2009 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
D'OH! I can't believe no one nominated Be Bop Deluxe. Probably wouldn't have ranked anyway, but it still seems like an egregious omission.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 December 2009 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
you didn't give us enough nominations each
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 14 December 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)
My problem is that the likes of Alice Coltrane, Popol Vuh and a few others are among my favourite artists of this time period but their albums tend to blur into a big blob for me, so I can't work out which ones to go for without relistening to about 50 albums first.
― The people of Ork are marching upon us (Matt #2), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago)
I'll be out of town for the next week, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't cast some ballots while I'm away. I can count them all when I get back.
As of now, only 33 ballots have been cast (some albums with a single first-place vote and no other votes are still appearing in the top 100, and I'd love to avoid a multi-way tie of that nature if at all possible). I can't remember how many Tuomas said he received for the '80s poll, but I'd like to have at least 50 or 60, if not more. Pass along the word to ilxors who might not be inclined to vote in these polls normally.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 December 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago)
I believe he said he got 100 ballots for the 80s poll.
― WmC, Saturday, 19 December 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)
for some reason the 80s is more popular than the 70s on ilx
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 20 December 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
Apparently so. I blame the youngniks.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago)
(I love the 80s too, so I can't blame them.)
The way these things work, you're likely to get a lot of last-minute votes. I received maybe 30 ballots for the 80s poll during the last couple of days of voting.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 20 December 2009 09:22 (fifteen years ago)
If this one doesn't work out, you might want to consider re-doing the nomination process with a lot fewer albums on the ballot. This one was brutal to vote in, and I suspect a lot of people will look at the huge list and say "forget it".
― Euler, Sunday, 20 December 2009 09:25 (fifteen years ago)
It's cool. I had apparently felt like whining a bit earlier, but I'm sure it will turn out ok.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 10:38 (fifteen years ago)
i just wanted to start voting and looked at my 1970 fave, after the goldrush. and it is not even nominated. sorry but i don't think i am participating. this nomination process is a huge joke.
― alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 20 December 2009 10:50 (fifteen years ago)
Would you really want to see another poll with all the same albums slightly shuffled around in a different order? Really? Well go copy & paste the original poll results and shuffle them till your dick gets hard, then.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 10:54 (fifteen years ago)
sorry, i forgot that this poll is different. have to think harder, then.
― alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 20 December 2009 10:56 (fifteen years ago)
:)
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 11:02 (fifteen years ago)
Maybe some people are trying to hear a lot of stuff on the nominations list that they haven't heard yet. I only ended up downloading a few albums of interest (but did add several titles to my to buy list), but I wondered if maybe I should try to do a lot more of that before voting. I decided against it partly out of laziness and partly because I didn't think too many albums would instantly be able to compete with my existing favorites on the list. But other people might be more excited about having an excuse to check out a lot of unfamiliar music.
― _Rudipherous_, Sunday, 20 December 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
the nominations list seems very arbitrary. there is so much stuff missing, some of it as it already placed in the other poll but there is so much which was forgotten. i somehow missed to nominate more than one album but i should have nominated much more. serge gainsbourg's "l'homme à tête de chou" eg which i consider his best work. or robert wyatt phantastic free-jazzy debut "end of an ear". or my fave genesis "nursery cryme". or the rad zappa beefheart collab, "bongo fury". or lou reed's most entertaining live album: "take no prisoners". or anything by the wonderful world-jazz combo oregon. what about jan garbarek? weather report? steve miller? alex harvey? rocket from the tombs? 15.60.75? the only ones? jacques brel? just to name a few artists who defined my seventies. this list feels very patchy.
― alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
I think the fact many peoples fave albums aren't allowed in it will affect the amount of voters. If there's an alternate 80s poll by tuomas it will suffer too i guess. Maybe a lot of ilxors only know the canon acts?
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
My favorite album of the 80s already placed in Tuomas's poll, but I could rather easily pick out another list of 30 or 40 for voting purpose and wouldn't care at all that I couldn't vote for my favorite album.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)
alex, are nominations here "very arbitrary" and "a huge joke" to you just because you didn't nominate anything? granted, the nomination process began and ended in less than a week, but i kinda feel like OF COURSE if you try to vote without nominating anything there's gonna be loads of stuff you'd put on your ballot but can't, so if you miss the boat on one maybe you've missed the boat on the other as well. by the same token, if nobody else nominated album out of the thousands of albums that WERE nominated, that probably means you'd be the only person voting for it and it wouldn't matter if you did or didn't anyway. and this poll is full of omissions by design, so it's not like anyone's ballot is going to reflect their 'true' 70s list.
― some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
btw JF once again thanks so much for doing this, I think it's a great idea. I might attempt an alternate 90s poll at some point after this is all over.
― some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)
alex in mainhattan there was unlimited nominations so its your own fault for not nominating. If there had been a limit to nominations it would've been a lot worse
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
I might attempt an alternate 90s poll at some point after this is all over.
I'd be into that.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)
i'd probably be able to come up with a more interesting ballot for a 90s one, this one's making me realize just how few non-canon 70s albums i'm familiar enough with to vote for.
i've been trying to listen to a lot of stuff on the nominations list but i've only had 1 great discovery so far which will probably make my ballot (The Cars!)
― bread has no effect on you (ciderpress), Sunday, 20 December 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago)
I hope you all check out the Funkadelic albums that are on this list. Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On and Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow are as equally good as Maggot Brain and One Nation Under A Groove.

― Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 December 2009 03:49 (fifteen years ago)
Don't wanna second-guess anybody, and it's not as though these things were scientific or anything; but I gotta wonder if it's really wise to vote for an LP that you've never heard until 2 weeks ago. (But what do I know?)
― Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 21 December 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
I think that given the connection I feel with the 70s, it's relatively easy for me to quickly have an opinion about how something fits into my overall picture of the 70s (or specifically within its genre in the 70s). There are certain 70s sounds I like in general, so if something I've never heard before ends up standing out as a great example of one of those sub-categories, I think it's easy to proclaim it an instant favorite. Anyway, instant exuberance is somewhat of a virtue around here. But you have a point.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 21 December 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
If you are pretty familiar with a particular era, it's possible to recognize that something or other is a key piece of the puzzle (for you anyway). (Although, in a lot of ways my knowledge of the 70s is very spotty when it comes to albums, since I lived through it as a radio-oriented listener and have never been very systematic about going back and digging in more deeply; but there's still some basic familiarity to build upon.)
And for people who don't know the 70s at all in an album-oriented way, there might be no choice but to vote for some things they've just heard.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 21 December 2009 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
Fair enough...it only took me half a year to determine that a '70s record was my alltime favourite; and 20 years on, it still reigns.
― Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 21 December 2009 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

Help me choose between ABBA's The Album and Arrival; I'll definitely vote for one or the other but not both. How weak are the "lesser" tracks on each?
― Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 21 December 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago)
Also, wasn't Anthony Braxton's Quartet (Dortmund) 1976 released for the first time in the 1990s? Wouldn't hurt to rule things out on technicalities in order to make it less impossible to vote for just 40 items.
― Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 21 December 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago)
Arrival is the ABBA album to have as far as I'm concerned. Just enough left over from the goofy early albums and a little bit of pre-disco boogie. Plus it has their best song ever, "Knowing Me, Knowing You."

Just a couple more days until I start adding in all the ballots I've been sent over the past week (no lie, it will probably be the first thing I do upon returning home because I'm a huge nerd). Then it's crunch time. ONE MORE WEEK OF VOTING AS OF TODAY. Reach out to your non-voting ilxor friends, urge participation, buy them lunch. Whatever you see fit. After finishing my 00s and 09 stuff, I had to take a break from the computer over the holidays. I'll get my ballot in soon.
X-post to Alex -- The idea that a list of 1,258 choices is "patchy" is absurd. I like most of the albums mentioned, but even my favorite of them, L' Homme a Tete De Chou, was only 18th on my 1976 list, and would never get close to my top 40 ballot. Bongo Fury would be the weakest album Beefheart ever contributed to if it weren't for his other 1974 clunkers. I'll never understand why anyone likes the trainwreck of Take No Prisoners, but I know there are some fans. Top 40 though? Same with other artists like Weather Report, Steve Miller and Alex Harvey. If they were on the ballot, I couldn't see them getting enough votes to even remotely place in the top 100. That is, I'm assuming the countdown of the winners will start at 100, and not 1,000. If so, I'm very confident that all contenders should be accounted for.

― Jamie_ATP, Monday, 28 December 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
@fastnbulbousthere is lots to like of the 1250 albums of course. i don't think this poll is about any album making any top 40. the top 100 are excluded for a reason. the thing about "l'homme à tête de chou" is that it simply is the greatest album about physical love i know. did you ever try to understand what gainsbourg is singing about? all the words he uses to describe the beauty of a female body? i think you have to go back to the song of songs from the old testament to find a work as poetic about love between man and woman. and the music is nicely understated, accentuating the recitation.
― alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago)
All caught up on entering ballots from the past week. The make up of the poll has changed DRASTICALLY! I won't divulge. It's not that people's #1 votes weren't good and unique, but I really wanted to avoid a 25-way tie at the 40pt. threshold (and now we've done it).
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
57 ballots in now, btw. I lost track of how many are unordered (six or seven maybe?) and how many contained less that a full allotment of votes (three, I think). Still plenty of time to vote if you haven't yet. Everything lower than the current #1 and #2 is easily shiftable with mid or low value vote, so you CAN still make a difference re: your favorite '70s records (and hell, #1 and #2 could still get upset with this much time left).
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
I have no idea what might be #1, but I do hope Herbie Hancock and/or Alice Coltrane get an album (or more) to the top 100. Can't imagine the 70s without them.
Also, I have high hopes for Curtis by Curtis Mayfield. Now that good but inferior albums (What's Going On and Superfly) are non-votable, maybe it's time for the best soul album of all time to get its due. Sadly, I suspect Donny Hathaway still won't make it, even though Everyhting is Everything is pretty much as good as anything Curtis or Marvin ever did.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 31 December 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

I have no clue as to where anything will place, but I'll be the anti-Tuomas here and hope for no Herbie or Alice. My version of the 70s is just fine without them, thank you very much.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
I ended the '70s being five years old, so I can easily imagine the decade without them. I got on a Hancock kick sometime in the '90s, though, and I can now fully appreciate his contributions to the decade. The first time I really heard of Alice Coltrane was when she died, but I've listened to some of her work since and it's bonkers good!
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:23 (fifteen years ago)
I've heard them both off and on for 20+ years and just never really warmed to any of it. Drives me nuts.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago)
I was born in 73 so I certainly didn't hear anything back then that I voted for. But that's a good thing. The 80s poll was a total nostagiafest for loads of people, so this one should avoid that for more people.I probably voted for about 6 Hancock albums btw :)

The 70s were exactly my teeneage years - I was born in 1960 - so I voted for a few records I bought when they were released: but weirdly, perhaps, voted for records i first heard this year as well. A decade that keeps on giving.
― sonofstan, Thursday, 31 December 2009 23:36 (fifteen years ago)
You should check him further, pretty much all the albums he released before Turn This Mutha Out are dope. I'm especially fond of the discoish grooves on House of the Rising Sun and the incredibly soulful jazz on Black Rhythm Revolution! (both of which I nominated and voted for). Kabsha (which is from 1980, so it's not eligible here) is also worth checking out, it has some fine, mellow hard bop with contributions from Pharoah Sanders and George Coleman.

69 ballots as of now. We may not break 100 in this one (if we do, I'm gonna be busy entering ballots all day tomorrow). Right now, the album in 100th place has 65 points. That's just 10 points less than the 100th place album in the 80s poll, which is quite respectable.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:15 (fifteen years ago)
I really hope you get about 30 votes in the next 24 hours.

I tried to help out, but people didn't want their nice clean site messed up.

You get credit for trying anyway.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)
I'll come up with a ballot.

I'm surprised Crazy Horses didn't get a nom, even at kitsch value.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)
So glad Tomita got nommed.
― I X Love (Abbott), Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:39 (fifteen years ago)
A person could do worse than to vote for Alain Goraguer

― I X Love (Abbott), Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)
My strategy in selecting & ranking albums was imagining 'what would REALLY knock my socks off if I were to see it on a list?' Sort of rooting for the underdog. Which mean 70%+ of the things I voted for probably won't end up on the results, but that's ok.
― I X Love (Abbott), Sunday, 3 January 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i'm really excited to see these results
― some dude, Sunday, 3 January 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)
that goraguer album is indeed fantastic. can you give any recommendations for what to check out next from him?
― Jamie_ATP, Sunday, 3 January 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
No flipping idea. It's the only thing I've ever heard of hit.

― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)
Over/under on people saying "I never saw this thread, but if I had, I would have voted for ________" -- 5.
― America's Next Most Disabled Ballerina (WmC), Sunday, 3 January 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)
Even if we get no more votes, we've still got a pretty healthy poll going here.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)
you will get more votes, and van der graaf generator may be about to undergo a small upsurge
*ponders*
― hoos rotorvator (acoleuthic), Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
I just made a fresh batch of Rice Krispie treats. I'll give one to any voter between now and the poll closing who makes a spot for the first Van Halen album on a ballot. (j/k, I don't have the delivery mechanism.)
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
Seriously regret voting early now
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
i put it in my top 10 i think...
― Jamie_ATP, Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
I voted early today. I think my tastes are pretty ILX-canonical so I probably helped crowd out some cherished underdogs. But many of the records I voted for were cherished underdogs in their time, and there are so many great records nominated that I wouldn't especially mind if none of my votes makes the final cut.
― dad a, Sunday, 3 January 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah - I thought I'd struggle to get to forty, but my first draft ballot stretched to 180-odd albums (though admittedly some got in just for having kooky titles)
― Ismael Klata, Sunday, 3 January 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
sent. had to make some adjustments last minute after noticing it was 40 and not 30 a la the 80s poll. /idiot
― moron oil (Gukbe), Sunday, 3 January 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 21:21 (fifteen years ago)
Gotta chop three out... and would like to put the rest in order... gnnn...
(feeling kinda bad for massive overrepresentation of krautrock and underrepresentation of other genres on my ballot, would really have liked to explore the other options before voting, but Christmas period has been mad busy w/precious little time to listen to music)
― brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 3 January 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)
Chopping albums by bands I really really love but am already voting for other things by vs chopping stuff I really really love but everyone will vote for vs chopping stuff I only mostly love but nobody else will vote for(rhetorical question)
― brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 3 January 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
Quite a conundrum.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 January 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)
I have just made my wote. Wish I'd gotten around to listening to some different stuff as was my intention, but sure that this thing will open my ears to plenty of new stuff.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Sunday, 3 January 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)
Sent. The order is completely haphazard in places, and although a large part of me wishes I'd had time to listen to extra stuff, this was probably the most difficult ilx poll I've voted in. Too much awesome stuff.
― emil.y, Sunday, 3 January 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)
These last two posts have been brought to you in association with the word 'stuff'.
Yeah, stuff getting a good hard workout there.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Sunday, 3 January 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
VOTED.
damn 40 is a lot of albums, it was great to be able to include so much

Adding in the last ballot, then making my own and adding it in as well. Will start the results thread later tonight and throw 100-96 out there. Thanks everybody!

― Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 January 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
This Third Wave is pretty good. This type of sound depressed me when I was a kid. (Borrows heavily from Brazil for one thing and I don't think I liked any Brazilian music, especially with the weird harmonic stuff going on, until I was in my 30s.) I find myself liking lots of these 60s/early 70s pop covers of trendy rock or soul hits. Was there more of that sort of thing happening then than now or do I just imagine it? I'm pretty sure there must have been.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 18 January 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)
There's something complex about the experience of having familiar songs remade in familiar styles, specific to those times, come streaming back from the past in a specific package which is unfamiliar.
