-The noms in question had to have had a fairly significant release, re-release or peak in 2009.
-Album tracks on albums released in 2009 qualify UNLESS it is relatively obvious that they will be singles in 2010.
-Tracks on albums released in other years that were singles in 2009 qualify.
-Remixes of tracks must be nominated separately but the points will be merged. When voting you will only be able to vote for one "version" of a track.

yeah that was my thinking on courtney. most recent word was that she's recording newer stuff with billy corgan to be released as a hole album. (or at least the most recent thing i remember, it's probably changed since then.) some of those songs will probably show up somewhere, but not the "album."

I think by default 2009 will be fresher in everyone's minds regardless of when the decade poll is done, but if anything the many years that have passed have made the early part of the decade a lot more attractive. If 2000-2005 doesn't dominate the decade poll I will be shocked.

When I was organizing my own best-of-decade list in blog form a short while back (which I never finished posting because, tbh, I forgot a bunch of things and got frustrated), the middle part of the decade was the strongest. 03-06 ish.

Did 2000-2002 dominate ILM's Best Of 2000-2004 poll? I think it did. I agree with not doing a decade poll in the first few months in 2010, but that's only because I think the noise will be relaxed and we'll hear 2009 with better ears by that point - plus we'll need a break from noughties retrospectives.

If anything, I'd like to see us to a decade poll and then immediately follow it with an Alt 00s poll like what we're doing with the 1970s, where we remove the canonical 100 albums that won't surprise us when they place.

Also, I wonder about doing a 2005-2009 poll. Wouldn't that be more fun? No 'Is This It' or 'Kid A' or 'Discovery' et al.

I'd be down with an 05-09 poll

It would be a lot more unpredictable and fun imo, but I don't know if it'd be better to do it before or after the decade poll.

I want to know what you guys think of the proposed ILM 2005-2009 albums and tracks poll that we'd do in the early spring BEFORE a decade poll. I think it'd be a) more fun b) less predictable than skipping straight to the decade poll. I think doing a 05-09 poll first would help us make our decade poll better and more balanced too fwiw.

seeing as the second half of the decade was retardedly underrepresented in nearly all the official lists, i think that's a good idea.

i'm also cool with waiting a while before the decade poll, doing this in the meantime could be alright.

Seriously, I'm more into the decade poll idea (though like tipsy mothra I will no doubt vote in whatever poll is run). Actually, I think more than half of my favorite albums from this past decade are from the second half of it (plus I just ordered six more that I haven't heard from the last few years, partly with "decade review" as an excuse), but maybe that is atypical. The earlier part of the decade has the advantage of having had more time to be sifted through, but the second part has the advantage of being fresher, so it all evens out?

Except it hasn't worked like that in anyone else's decade poll. So tired of seeing KidABlueprintDiscoveryThisIsItEtc. I'd rather have just the half-decade poll. Let's buck some convention!

I'd be fine with voting in a 05-09 poll, but I'd be much more excited about it if we waited a few months. After the '80s poll, the alternate '70s poll and the 2009 albums/singles polls, my enthusiasm for counting down records will have seen better days.

I think the 2000-2004 countdown ILM did was pretty kickass and distinct. I'd like to see 2005-2009 get the same thorough treatment.

and I personally like the idea of doing a half-decade poll in March or April, and then, if we have the patience, waiting to do the decade poll for when we get bored and hungry for more poll.

Much has been written recently that the reputations of albums from the last five years are nothing compared to the reps of albums released before 2005-2006. If doing a half-decade poll first helps unearth good music some of us missed or cements the reputations of more recent albums (So we have something to go up against the 'Is This the Discovery for the Kid A Blueprint'-Industrial Complex) then so be it.

We'll see what we feel like in a few months. As Lex said: maybe things will be more balanced and the decade poll more fun and predictable if we just wait.

Zombi are doing nicely in the metal poll despite not being remotely metal (its all synths! but is released on a metal label), so it would be ironic if they didn't make this poll. Great stuff like this shouldn't be slept on.

yeah...but regardless of whether it's Kid A or something else, all the other examples you mentioned are from the first half the decade too, particularly the first couple years. an '05-'09 poll would be so much more exciting because I really have very little idea of what the top 10 would look like.
