!~!~!~!~!~BOOM BOOM ALBUMS N TRAX POLL 2009: NOMINATIONS due Dec 31~!~!~!~!~!

Same as last year...

-The noms in question had to have had a fairly significant release, re-release or peak in 2009.
-Album tracks on albums released in 2009 qualify UNLESS it is relatively obvious that they will be singles in 2010.
-Tracks on albums released in other years that were singles in 2009 qualify.
-Remixes of tracks must be nominated separately but the points will be merged. When voting you will only be able to vote for one "version" of a track.

You can nominate up to 15 albums AND/OR tracks. 15 tracks, 14 albums and 1 track, 3 tracks and 4 albums, 1 track, etc.

Due date: please get your noms in before the new year. If it's datestamped with 2009 I will take it.

Note: it would be of great help if you could format your nominations as

Tracks

Artist - Song

Albums

Artist - Albums

No quotes or extra punctuation, just a dash btw the artist and the work, and please try to keep to the artist-first order. I export everything to Excel so the more consistency, the better.

the only end of year poll i'm excited about, last year's was excellent for the threads alone

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

lex LOVES metal.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

15 albums and/or tracks. Wow. Um. This requires some strategy, neh? Time to think.

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

I think the year end polls are getting better, I remember the first one I did had something get into the top 50 with two votes.

musically, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

I can still enjoy threads/articles on bands/genres i dont like if the contributions are good. Plenty of the polls on ilx arent all to my taste but the chat is great!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

i hope musically wont mind if I promote this years metal nominations thread

was MPP in last years poll?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

It was initially, but it was disqualified when musically noticed the malfeasance of trying to sneak it in.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

xpost/
I'll voluntarily refrain from posting at ILM for two weeks if 51 people vote for the Joel Plaskett Emergency (triple) album!

I don't know if MPP was in last year's poll, but I make it a policy not vote for leaked-but-not-yet-released albums...

Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

Goes without saying that the above are all varying degrees of awesome, but if y'all track down either of Olenka's releases, they're a lovely pair of sort-of folk albums (one more Slavic, one country-tinged) that caught me totally off guard to become firmly entrenched in my listening habits this year.

Except according to wikipedia they both came out in November of 2008. Shit. The EP was released by a label in 2009 (tho) so I suppose that still counts.

also, a very strange but interesting album that take's Ariel Pink's style to a whole other realm:

Gay War - Horribles Parade

Dan S, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

isn't that gary war? though gay war's more catchy...

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I was just comparing him to AP. You think it's more catchy? It seems almost impenetrable to me

This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:10 (fifteen years ago)

question: would it be ok to nominate the grammy show performance of "swagga like us"? because it's one of the great things of the decade, but the studio single version isn't, really.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

(by "of the decade" i also mean "of the year," obv.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

i think that's a terrible idea beyond just not liking the song, personally

radric in manehattan (some dude), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:21 (fifteen years ago)

don't know if it 'should' count but if it did that would sure be a slippery slope we'd be on

radric in manehattan (some dude), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for doing this again musically.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i wouldn't nominate the song on its own. but that performance really was one of my favorite things and totally belongs on an '09 highlight reel. anyway. i'll leave it off.

Dark, promiscuous five-year-old (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 10:52 (fifteen years ago)

15 nominations, all tracks:

Air France - GBG Belongs To Us
Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone
Arctic Monkeys - Crying Lightning
Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
Cassie - It Must Be Love
Cassie - Stamina
The Gossip - Heavy Cross (Fred Falke Remix)
Jay-Z - DOA (Death Of Autotune)
La Roux - Reflections And Protection
Lady Gaga - Poker Face
Nneka - Heartbeat
Red Hot Entertainment - Junior Spesh
Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (2009 Extended Version)
Whitney Houston - Million Dollar Bill
The Saturdays - Work

At least a couple of these were reworked and reissued this year, and another couple I can't verify releases for at all - so it's possible that I've got my dates all wrong, call me on it if I have.

Oh, and I formally withdraw my nomination of 'Paper Planes' - while it would be nice to see it finally take the no.1 slot, I was really just kidding.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

TRAX

Floating Points - Love Me Like This
Jack Penate - Tonight's Today (Don't be put off, this is lovely!)
SMD - Cruel Intentions (Maurice Fulton remix) (Haven't heard the original, but basically Beth Ditto over a classic Fultonian FX bass and guitar riff. I just wish it had a "Where's Jason K"-style synth wigout at the end)
Mark E You
Lindstrom and Christabelle Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane remix, dub and original!)
Glass Candy Geto Boys
Bat for Lashes - Pearl's Dream (Leo Zero Remix) (Don't think this is actually an official release, but it's easy to get, and great.)

ALBUMS
LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 remixes (Should have been released a year earlier, but still got some great moments)
Meanderthals - Desire Lines

That's nine. I might nominate more if I remember them.

Loads of stuff I liked already nominated (plus a billion things I'd never even heard of)

I resent remixes not being counted separately! Why not?

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, some missing dashes. For Musically's benefit:

Mark E - You
Lindstrom and Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane remix, dub and original!)
Glass Candy - Geto Boys

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

Jamie, based on how this has been done in the past, you can nominate and vote for remixes seperately. Different mixes of a song will be counted together but the votes for different versions are acknowledged. It can definitely be a boost to tracks with multiple popular mixes.

Big Boi feat. Gucci Mane - Shine Blockas (not sure if this counts - not officially released yet)

pretty sure if you have a full-length mp3 of it on your computer it should count -- nominating albums with 2010 release dates that have leaked is a no-no but afaik lots of singles and leaked songs from as yet unreleased albums are fair game

some dude, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

the last time i held off on unreleased leaks for the following year, they never got released at all :(

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

by doesn't that mean that a) the leaks you had were just leaks and not the final albums and b) probably nobody else would've voted for them anyway?

some dude, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

no, they were just leaked individual tracks, not a full album, which i thought would make cassie's second lp :(

the leaked courtney love album from this year should prob still be eligible though? i mean i can't imagine that being released in its current state, if at all

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that was my thinking on courtney. most recent word was that she's recording newer stuff with billy corgan to be released as a hole album. (or at least the most recent thing i remember, it's probably changed since then.) some of those songs will probably show up somewhere, but not the "album."

if i had more noms to give, i could give them to just about every track on the fever ray album. so far only 2 remixes have been nom'd.

This is always an issue for me on best trax lists: do you vote for deep cuts off of albums where every song is great, just SINGLES, or a combination?

I'm fine with waiting a while to do a decade poll, but I don't really agree with that reasoning. I just did a decade list, and even though I'm really excited about a lot of 2009 stuff right now, only 4 albums from this year got in my top 100.

Personally I prefer the Gaga-less version of Videophone, Gaga's presence doesn't add much and the intro drags a bit IMO

Reminds me I should nominate Telephone though

musically, Saturday, 12 December 2009 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

I think by default 2009 will be fresher in everyone's minds regardless of when the decade poll is done, but if anything the many years that have passed have made the early part of the decade a lot more attractive. If 2000-2005 doesn't dominate the decade poll I will be shocked.

musically, Saturday, 12 December 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

When I was organizing my own best-of-decade list in blog form a short while back (which I never finished posting because, tbh, I forgot a bunch of things and got frustrated), the middle part of the decade was the strongest. 03-06 ish.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 December 2009 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

Did 2000-2002 dominate ILM's Best Of 2000-2004 poll? I think it did. I agree with not doing a decade poll in the first few months in 2010, but that's only because I think the noise will be relaxed and we'll hear 2009 with better ears by that point - plus we'll need a break from noughties retrospectives.

If anything, I'd like to see us to a decade poll and then immediately follow it with an Alt 00s poll like what we're doing with the 1970s, where we remove the canonical 100 albums that won't surprise us when they place.

Also, I wonder about doing a 2005-2009 poll. Wouldn't that be more fun? No 'Is This It' or 'Kid A' or 'Discovery' et al.

Cunga, Saturday, 12 December 2009 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be down with an 05-09 poll

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

counting anything by Taylor Swift in this poll doesn't sit right with me--it's not like Fearless or any of the songs from it were "low profile" in 2008, and I don't remember it coming out that late in the year

as much as I wish Taylor Swift to be ineligible for this poll, she really hit her media saturation point this year. I agree that Fearless was plenty popular in 2008 but I think it was even more popular in 2009. Unfortunately.

considering "you belong with me" was released to radio this april, i'll be voting the shit outta that. the album (at least on this side of the pond) was '08 so to me that's not eligible, and i won't be voting for it when it's inevitably britishly nominated

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the album came out in Nov. 08, but besides Love Story, the singles were all 09 affairs, pretty much, and most people probably heard them in that context.

nov 08 is pretty late in the year anyway, but in any case the UK release and the platinum edition of fearless were both 09. have already voted for it in another poll.

i'm not sure whether lindstrøm & christabelle's album should be eligible: its official mainstream release date is next jan, but it's already available to buy through rough trade...

So glad The Very Best album was nominated - I hadn't even heard it when I did my noms and now it's def. a necessary inclusion.

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be grateful if musically could rule on whether any of the non-repeats of Tannenbaum's nominations upthread have been counted. There's at least one album there that needs to be in the poll, but I don't want to waste nominations if they're already in.

In the meantime, a few TRACKS nominations:

Rihanna - Russian Roulette
Jason DeRulo - Watcha Say
Chipmunk - Chip Diddy Chip
Chipmunk - Oopsy Daisy
Chief waKiL ft. Ciara - Google Me

Beatrix: Think we only get fifteen albums or songs in total. Sacrifice 'I'm on a Boat' if you rejig and I'll definitely nom it. Pretty sure stuff like The-Dream is already nommed as well, but if it ain't, I'll add that to my list.

moron oil (Gukbe), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

just FYI - if you nominate more than 15 things total I am not counting ANY of your nominations, you need to read the rules and cut your list down yourself, I'm not going to make that judgment call for anyone. That means Beatrix and Tannenbaum need to resub, and ctrl-f is your friend and will help you kick off the dupes on your lists before any others.

musically, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub - is your "Desire - Desire" the Italians Do It Better band? All I know is the album "II", which I was going to nominate. Is there some cross-pond album name change?

can we consolidate efforts on one or two tracks so that he at least has a chance of charting on the songs list?

"right side of my brain" is my favorite song on the album, but i can get on board with some strategic voting. i wish i liked "walkin' on the moon" more, tbh. but "rockin' that shit" or "sweat it out" are good by me.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 26 December 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago)

"rockin' that shit" or "sweat it out" are the two best singles proper, and i'll gladly throw either of them some votes, but there's no way fancy won't end up WAY high in my list. that is some next level shit, and head and shoulders above most things i heard this yr.

Alex in Montreal, Saturday, 26 December 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

just FYI since i am on a mobile...tannenbaum (?) nommed more than 15 so unless he came back and amended his noms, which is entirely possible since i haven't been checking, his noms will not make the cut unless someone ELSE noms them. if someone can c&p that list everyone can give it a once-over to make sure there's nothing there you are expecting to see on the final list.

musically, Saturday, 26 December 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

"rockin that shit" and "sweat it out," then? i'm down.

I don't see why Position Normal shouldn't count - if it was limited to an impossible number of copies maybe, but it isn't, also it's rad

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 31 December 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

I want to know what you guys think of the proposed ILM 2005-2009 albums and tracks poll that we'd do in the early spring BEFORE a decade poll. I think it'd be a) more fun b) less predictable than skipping straight to the decade poll. I think doing a 05-09 poll first would help us make our decade poll better and more balanced too fwiw.

Cunga, Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

Er, 'less predictable than the decade poll' is what I meant to say.

Cunga, Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

we don't need two polls i don't think

stupid fruity crazy jag (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

seeing as the second half of the decade was retardedly underrepresented in nearly all the official lists, i think that's a good idea.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

i'm also cool with waiting a while before the decade poll, doing this in the meantime could be alright.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno i think getting all geared up for a half-decade poll and then a decade poll ... that's a lot of polling even by ilm standards. and w/all the decade-this decade-that everywhere i sorta think people are more in a decade frame of mind.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:09 (fifteen years ago)

but, you know ... i'm enough of a dweeb that i'll probably vote in whatever gets constituted.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

Having a half-decade poll first seems like some kind of social engineering (haha!) to try to influence the result of the eventual decade poll.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, I'm more into the decade poll idea (though like tipsy mothra I will no doubt vote in whatever poll is run). Actually, I think more than half of my favorite albums from this past decade are from the second half of it (plus I just ordered six more that I haven't heard from the last few years, partly with "decade review" as an excuse), but maybe that is atypical. The earlier part of the decade has the advantage of having had more time to be sifted through, but the second part has the advantage of being fresher, so it all evens out?

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 31 December 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

Except it hasn't worked like that in anyone else's decade poll. So tired of seeing KidABlueprintDiscoveryThisIsItEtc. I'd rather have just the half-decade poll. Let's buck some convention!

art crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be fine with voting in a 05-09 poll, but I'd be much more excited about it if we waited a few months. After the '80s poll, the alternate '70s poll and the 2009 albums/singles polls, my enthusiasm for counting down records will have seen better days.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

yeah we should do it in march or something

Queef Latina (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, a few months wait would be good. We probably could have held off on the alternate 70s poll until after the '09 poll, too.

art crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

yeah '05-'09 poll (before or especially instead of the full decade) would be awesome, whenever it happens.

as far as the eye (ken c) (some dude), Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

not thinking too hard for this...

un(!)registered (unregistered), Thursday, 31 December 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

i think waiting a few months to do the decade poll might go some way to alleviating the first-half focus we've seen elsewhere

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 December 2009 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

I think the 2000-2004 countdown ILM did was pretty kickass and distinct. I'd like to see 2005-2009 get the same thorough treatment.

and I personally like the idea of doing a half-decade poll in March or April, and then, if we have the patience, waiting to do the decade poll for when we get bored and hungry for more poll.

Having a half-decade poll first seems like some kind of social engineering (haha!) to try to influence the result of the eventual decade poll.

Much has been written recently that the reputations of albums from the last five years are nothing compared to the reps of albums released before 2005-2006. If doing a half-decade poll first helps unearth good music some of us missed or cements the reputations of more recent albums (So we have something to go up against the 'Is This the Discovery for the Kid A Blueprint'-Industrial Complex) then so be it.

Cunga, Thursday, 31 December 2009 09:34 (fifteen years ago)

We'll see what we feel like in a few months. As Lex said: maybe things will be more balanced and the decade poll more fun and predictable if we just wait.

Cunga, Thursday, 31 December 2009 09:35 (fifteen years ago)

count me as in favor of a half decade poll in a few months, and then maybe the decade poll over the summer or something. way more interested in the former tho

k3vin k., Thursday, 31 December 2009 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

actually thinking about it i def prefer the half-decade idea. decades are big things!

thinking about the half-decade poll more, i'm still leery of the idea but if someone convinces me that by giving props to the latter years it'll knock down kid a's placement in the eventual decade poll ... that would be a selling point. (but if we do the half-decade poll and kid a STILL finishes top 5, i'm gonna feel gypped.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

if you can list a min of 10 then go for it. 1 list wont distort the list, but it might add to it, have a look anyway. There's still 2 and a bit weeks left. You might discover some good stuff. Which is always the point of EOY polls. Always find out about great stuff this way. Alex Moulton last year for one.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 31 December 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Zombi are doing nicely in the metal poll despite not being remotely metal (its all synths! but is released on a metal label), so it would be ironic if they didn't make this poll. Great stuff like this shouldn't be slept on.

yeah...but regardless of whether it's Kid A or something else, all the other examples you mentioned are from the first half the decade too, particularly the first couple years. an '05-'09 poll would be so much more exciting because I really have very little idea of what the top 10 would look like.

as far as the eye (ken c) (some dude), Thursday, 31 December 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think we all know what will be in the top ten of a decade poll, just not sure what order, so I can see why some will want an '05-'09 poll as that doesn't seem so predictable.
