i originally read 'famous' as 'fabulous'.
so did the wiki/allmusic thing, a few exclamation marks appeared over my head, after which i re-read the post and realised my mistake.
think i will wait for my kids to tell me what his records are like.

mark e, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

He's really famous/popular? I saw him in guest spots on two Nickelodeon shows -- iCarly and True Jackson VP (my 8-year old daughter watches both shows) -- and figured he was just an actor playing a country singer.

He was terrible, BTW. His voice seemed auto-tuned, and his songs seemed flat and hackneyed.

I assume that sometimes labels just keep pressing until a act is popular. I'm open to be convinced otherwise with respect to this kid's talent, but wow, those few Justin Bieber songs I heard were, at best . . . servicable? Adequate? Unmemorable? Nondescript? Maybe worse.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

are you a ten year old girl with cheesy parents?

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

lol. Hardly. Actually, the reverse: I am a (hopefully not cheesy) parent watching the same shows as my 8-year old daughter.

the first bieber single is actually pretty good bcuz it was written by terius, but maybe it's just my age but his whole 'popularity' wrt screaming girls & what not just feels very fake & through-the-motions to me. his singles aren't even massively popular in the US. dude's just a trending topic, idk

“I have a swagger coach that helps me and teaches me different swaggerific things to do,” Bieber told the Toronto Star last month. “He has helped me with my style and just putting different pieces together and being able to layer and stuff like that.”

Or, as swagger coach Ryan Good, 24, told the Toronto paper: “Usher called me and said he thought Justin would benefit from being around a cool white boy.”

Death and Legacy

Bieber died following a gunshot wound sustained during a late night altercation in west Manhattan. According to local detectives, Bieber and his alleged girlfriend Selena Gomez attempted to enter a New York City nightclub with fake IDs but were recognized by several patrons. Witnesses claim Bieber was belligerent and threatened to shoot one of the bouncers. Justin subsequently reached into his coat pocket and withdrew what the NYPD has claimed to be a small .25 caliber pistol. James Rodriguez, an on duty police officer at the scene, responded by shooting Bieber once in the head. It was later determined that Beiber's handgun was errantly loaded with .22 caliber ammunition.

Paramedics arrived on scene shortly after the shooting but were unable to resuscitate Bieber, who was pronounced dead shortly before 11pm EST. The area surrounding Larry Flynt's Hustler Club on Manhattan's West 51st street has been closed off and witnesses are being questioned as the investigation into this tragic event continues. No statement has been released by Bieber's family or publicist, and no one else was injured during the altercation. Although toxicology reports have not yet been issued, several tablets of the prescription drug Dilauded were found on Gomez' person and it is speculated that both her and Bieber were intoxicated.

Yeah, 'one time' really only grosses me out because:
a) his 'invisible' braces are incredibly, ickily visible
b) he's 'seducing' girls
c) he looks like he's 12 rather than 15
d) he embodies everything that i find so compelling but also so disgusting about teenagers of today.

For what? He's not remotely in the vicinity of attractive. I mean, he's unsettling in that way you're disturbed when your 14/15 yr old sister gets her first boyfriend or something but...sort of harmless and ignorable until you're confronted with the music head-on.

Internet Pranksters Attempt to Send Justin Bieber Tour to North Korea
Posted Tue Jul 6, 2010 11:25am PDT by Joseph Brannigan Lynch in Stop The Presses!

If Internet pranksters have their way, Justin Bieber will be performing in one of the world's most oppressive regimes. Communist North Korea is currently leading an online poll on Bieber's My World Tour website, where the 16-year-old singer asked his fans to choose which country he should tour in next. Bieber didn't put any place off limits and, of course, Web-based troublemakers took full advantage of the trusting Canadian heartthrob.

Users of the website 4chan-an influential Internet subculture that introduced the world to lolcats -- made sure North Korea received over a half million votes, catapulting it from 24th place to 1st place. That puts the despotic communist country ahead of Israel by about 5,000 thousand votes -- and if nothing changes before the contest wraps on July 7, it will make North Korea the winner.

Considering almost no one in North Korea is allowed on the Internet and the country's restrictive media probably doesn't give the mop-haired Bieber much coverage, it's fairly unlikely that any of those half million votes came from actual North Korean citizens.

Regardless of the online poll's outcome, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il and Bieber's tour manager can probably agree on one thing: the adorable, elf-like singer almost certainly won't be adding the harsh regime to his world tour.

This isn't the only thing the Internet has done to punk Bieber lately, though. Over the holiday weekend, hackers broke into Bieber's YouTube videos and redirected preteen fans to false articles about their idol dying in a car crash. And those were actually some of the more kid-friendly websites to which fans of the 16-year-old singer were redirected.

The rumors were so prevalent that the boy himself made a point of tweeting about it.
"Let's take some time to answer some crazy rumors...I'm not dead," Bieber posted on his Twitter account. "I had to check on this one...but it turns out I'm alive."

Furthermore, he also assured fans that he's "not Peter Pan," demonstrating that the music sensation has a sense of humor about himself. Being a wildly popular teenage superstar probably takes the sting out of being the butt of Internet jokes like these.

My thoughts exactly. Otoh I can see that they had to do *something*, "My World"'s production/angle/songwriting was tethered to his pre-pubescent voice. I just wish I could say I liked this more than, uh, anything off "Justified".

mom in the woods (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

it kinda depends on whether you think the key context of that album is the move from pop to R&B, from group member to solo star, from teenpop star to universal/'adult' pop icon, or whether it applies equally to female acts etc. lots of artists before or since have had rough parallels in some of those categories, Bieber's just probably the most at once (although he was never in a group).

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 April 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

Na na na, that's what I THOUGHT, I was super cynical about the whole thing. "Usher reboots his career", Scooter makes some cheddar, a billion teenagers get obsessive. There's more to it than that, maybe? At least, there was for me. It's like seeing a highlight reel of one's own adolescence. All the good bits but with better hair and clothes.

I read something C Wilson just wrote with regards to Hirsch's "Bully":

Sitting through the vérité evidence, moment by moment, did provide a sort of therapy – not so much in the sympathy I felt for what the characters were enduring as in the way it had me constantly anticipating how the moments we were seeing would affect the lives ahead of them. Of course the lens through which I was doing that forecasting was my own experience, and so the lens became a mirror, in which I could see the threads tracing back from today to those moments of my own, way back.

And he hit the nail on the head, with regards to "why do I care about Tyler Clementi". The same observation rang true when I was watching Beibs at the bowling alley.

Ò (Ówen P.), Friday, 13 April 2012 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

We head into his studio, where Aldred greets Bieber and pumps him up for the evening by ripping the sleeves off of his T-shirt while he's still wearing it. OUTTA MY WAY, SLEEVES. This is clearly not the first time they've performed this ritual. It's Bieber's patented entrance move, his talcum powder tossed in the air. Being Justin Bieber means having an endless number of T-shirts to destroy.

i could totally see him going off the rails a la britney if his management wasn't so tight -- still may happen cuz he seems to have a small rebellious streak

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

timberlake is a high bar tho -- there's nothing really to suggest that bieber has that kind of songwriting talent, for instance -- he's supposedly some writing on this album and the songs are definitely impressive but if he ever puts out an album 75% as good as 'futuresex/lovesounds' i'd be floored

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)

i think he could have a pretty rewarding career as a singles artist whose albums are half pretty good, half total nonsense -- but he's still far, far away from his mid-20s

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

I know nothing about the dude, but does he work with any auteur producers, or just hitmaker hacks? JT's smart move was hooking up with Neptunes and Timba at the peak of their powers (more or less). He had an ambitious eye for quality. The Bieb seems to be all about product right now, which is the safe move. But he's also really stupid young.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

(Though even my 7-year old and her friends make fun of him, so who knows what that portends)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

well, even with songwriting credits on No Strings Attached it was still impossible to recognize Justin the polymath we know today.

he has a mix on this album -- guys like darkchild, hit-boy, bei major, diplo, so it's not exactly a katy perry album

some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:01 (thirteen years ago)

i don't really understand j0rdan's Katy Perry contrast, unless he somehow things Stargate, Dr. Luke and Tricky Stewart are somehow more hacky/less auteur-like than Hitboy or Bei Major

some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

i don't exactly think hit-boy and bei major are geniuses or something, but they're more auteur than stargate and dr. luke

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

Dr. Luke is a much stronger parallel to 2002 Neptunes than those dudes

some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

i mean i don't necessarily agree w/ josh's premise entirely, but it's a mildly interesting and adventurous tracklist -- but i'd say the same for usher's new album, idk

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

how many major label albums can have a diplo production credit before that ceases to be shorthand for 'adventurous'

some dude, Thursday, 31 May 2012 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

oh, i don't really give a shit about diplo, but his a&r people def stepped further out of the box than i would've expected.

bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Friday, 22 June 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

idk, the album doesn't often rise above this minimal "just ok" level for me. it just kinda plods along with its competent-but-sorta-limp hooks, edm-y beats and diaphanous lyrics and doesn't hit much of a stride for the most part. and the title track is just embarrassing, i can't even put myself through it again.

(i love how mere seconds after i thought, "wow, his voice sounds unusually annoying here" during "right here" drake entered the track and instantly one-upped him in that regard.)

that said, i do like a number of the songs on this album -- "boyfriend", "thought of you" (which i would say does actually 'hit a stride'), "catching feelings" (which appropriately enough is one of the only tracks that actually captures a ~feeling~ for me, however uncomplicated), "as long as you love me"

i'm sure many people will like it (including people who never liked anything he did before) but i'm not even sure this is even negligibly better than his previous material

teledyldonix, Friday, 22 June 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

nicki minaj's verse is oddly beautiful to me despite the lol-worthy wiener/selena rhyme. love love love her delivery. JUSTIN - BIEBER!

"take you" and "catching feelings" are my other highlights, as well as the first 3 tracks which i already knew were all A+

uberweiss, Saturday, 23 June 2012 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

they kinda leaked all the best songs early, also bonus tracks > over half the shit on the album

the first six or so songs are awesome... "catching feelings" is the one ballad that is almost borderline acceptable

trinidad jokes (some dude), Saturday, 1 December 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago)

trinidad jokes (some dude), Saturday, 1 December 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago)

i just think that superior, faux-baffled tone so often taken by middle-aged male critics when faced with excitable tween fans is a huge, played-out cliché at this point. caramanica is experienced enough not to be completely overt about his disdain for them, and for bieber, but it's obvious nonetheless, as those tweets illustrate

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Saturday, 1 December 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago)

Pat Finn, Sunday, 14 April 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

However, there is a simple explanation for the comment, a source tells PEOPLE.

"Justin took the time to visit the museum after reading Anne Frank's diaries – he wanted to follow-up by visiting her house. Someone told Justin during the tour that Anne was very into pop culture and probably would've been a fan of Justin," the source says.

"It's sad that people are so quick to criticize without understanding the context with which he made those comments."

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 15 April 2013 09:44 (twelve years ago)

I don't normally open up this thread, so I didn't hear on the radio until this morning what this is all about. I'm completely fine with what he said. Above and beyond the fact that he was, in his own clumsy and egocentric way, trying to say something nice, I sometimes think kids forget that Anne Frank--or MLK, or, in my own country, Terry Fox--were actually real people. They're presented with this deified, remote textbook figure from the time they enter school, and after a while, I get the feeling--as a teacher, from first-hand observation--they just tune out anything further you have to say. Suggesting that Anne Frank, in another context, might have had feelings similar to other teenage girls does not seem like the worst thing in the world to me. (I'll cut him some slack and assume he meant in another context--not that in the middle of her actual horrors she would have found time for Justin Bieber.)

clemenza, Monday, 15 April 2013 11:32 (twelve years ago)

A friend of Ann Powers noted this more specifically in re: Frank, pop culture and being a 'real' person:

I am sure that this is not what Beiber had in mind, but it is true that Anne Frank did keep up with Hollywood fan and gossip magazines and particularly liked Deanna Durbin, who was, arguably, even more manufactured than Justin Beiber (whatever you think of either of them). Both Durbin and Beiber were/are heavily promoted teen "singers"; both were popular among younger kids because of their anodyne, nonthreatening good looks (Durbin was engineered by the studio as the "wholesome, attractive" opposition to Judy Garland's actual talent but somewhat swarthy appearance). It's not flattering for Beiber, but it also means that he might not be totally wrong.

A member of Justin Bieber's entourage has been arrested after police say they found drugs, suspected to be cocaine, "in plain view" during a search of the singer's LA home.

About a dozen officers were searching the property in Calabasas at around 8am on Tuesday morning.

It follows claims the 19-year-old pelted his neighbour's house with eggs, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and almost injuring a 13 year old girl.

The LA County Sheriff's Office say they were looking for surveillance video tapes when they spotted the drugs "in plain view".

Speaking to Newsbeat, Steve Whitmore from LA County Sheriff's Office said "There were about eight people at the residence, they were detained.

"Justin Bieber was there as well. He was also detained, not arrested.

"The alleged narcotics were in such a location that they were directly related to one person and not related to the house at large."

He said "it is possible" that the drug was cocaine but tests would be carried out.

Mr Whitmore said Justin Bieber had still not yet been cleared over the vandalism allegations.

Bet he's getting paid plenty to take the (w)rap...

I wouldn't worry about Bieber yet - he's not some strung-out drug addict, just a typical dumbass teen (with too much money) who likes to party. I remember another rich dumbass from Ontario who once got arrested in Florida for driving drunk and in possession of weed while still a young man, but that little setback didn't prevent him from turning his life around and growing up to become MAYOR OF TORONTO!

"Baby" doesn't approach critical consensus?

timellison, Saturday, 29 August 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)

not really. it's kind of his legacy song because it broke YouTube records and YouTube has been the catalyst and primary metric for most of his success, but it's not remotely his biggest radio hit, and critics never really cared about it. they did briefly care about "Boyfriend" because it/the video were transparent Timberlake career narrative cosplay, but that didn't last long.

him not being a presence the last 3 years was at least semi-deliberate -- "What Do You Mean" is the first real full scale solo radio single he's released since "Beauty And A Beat" in late 2012. his team kind of bent over backwards to engineer that break, though, releasing Journals songs once a week so it'd be a 'compilation' and not an 'album' and the label asking Billboard not to report sales so that people couldn't analyze how well or poorly it was charting, which is kind of unprecedented and crazy to me. it seems like they saw the tabloid meltdown narrative building steam and decided to wait it out so that the next album would be The Comeback without ever really suffering The Flop first.

Molanphy looks at the stats and the music and more of "What Do You Mean" plus "Where Are U Now"

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 16 September 2015 14:32 (nine years ago)

Re: the Slate article, it seems clear already that the song is reaching a wider audience than just his fanbase. His fanbase almost certainly turned out in huge numbers in the first week, but the song was still #1 in sales in its second week despite the typical decline, and though it fell in the second week on the Hot 100, it only fell to #3. For comparison, any given One Direction lead single debuts high in the top 3 in the first week due to their fans and then almost completely vacates the top 10 by the second week due to a huge sales decline and no radio support. On that note, "What Do You Mean" is currently top 15 on radio overall less than a month after it's release to any major radio format. So I think it's safe to say "What Do You Mean?" is appealing to more than just his fanbase.

I'm just speaking to a general trend in career arcs of teen pop stars that's pretty consistent and fairly obvious imo. if they're interested in any kind of career longevity in the industry they make the leap to "respectable" hitmakers (usually via some bids for being controversial or otherwise adult; "I'm all grown up now!") and attempt to age with their generation

more interesting, less pandering production (thanks Skrillex)?

don't really hear anything more interesting or less pandering in the new songs' production than say "as long as you love me" which is a pretty high peak in his discography, or several other tracks on believe

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:28 (nine years ago)

it's a good r&b record

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:28 (nine years ago)

unlike lex i do think "where are u now", "what do you mean" and "sorry" are some of his best work so i can see why people are really into them

but i do think this is a case where a pop star being more consciously grown up in sound (i.e. the verses on "where are u now") makes it ok for some people to approach his music, where there was still something goofy and immature about "boyfriend" or "beauty and a beat"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:30 (nine years ago)

also i wouldn't discount the fact that he became a tabloid fixture in between the two records. more interest in his celebrity is going to generate interest in his music even amongst ostensible critics (this same principle applies to rihanna becoming a huge concern among tastemakers on the internet despite releasing like 3 songs in the last two years)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:34 (nine years ago)

iirc people were hyped abt boyfriend at the time but believe was kind of a disappointment and

i don't think it has anything to do with his age. teen pop stars who successfully become adult pop stars are outliers we just all collectively forget about the ones who don't, like it's not a general trend for people to positively critically reevaluate like willa ford or whoever when they reach 21

also *lifts cloth off lex ears* new biebs... sounds different? i liked some of old-biebs singles but new shit is miles ahead of all but the best of his past output \o/

teen pop stars who successfully become adult pop stars are outliers we just all collectively forget about the ones who don't, like it's not a general trend for people to positively critically reevaluate like willa ford or whoever when they reach 21

most teen pop stars look at the odds and cash out without even bothering trying to become an adult pop star - cuz the road is brutal and the rewards are not clear. If you've already made millions by the time yr 21, why not take yr ball and go home and do something else (as most do?) The outliers are either those who really deeply crave artistic credibility or are psychotically narcissistic enough that they crave pop-star levels of fame/attention and can't envision existing without it.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:59 (nine years ago)

... or are attempting to pursue careers in their chosen profession by following the avenue where they've so far had the most success?

I mean, I hate Bieber to death but this is like saying that Bill Gates is a raging narcissist for continuing to pursue a career in software after selling DOS to IBM.

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:05 (nine years ago)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:10 (nine years ago)

... or are attempting to pursue careers in their chosen profession by following the avenue where they've so far had the most success?

also yeah of course this happens but their are plenty of careers in music that do not involve being a huge adult pop star. I do think you have to be kind of insane to want Bieber-levels of fame tbh.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:12 (nine years ago)

i like your rational expectations theory of teen pop stars shakey. bieber will successfully transition to adult pop star because if he wouldn't have succeeded he wouldn't have tried

flopson, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:12 (nine years ago)

it all makes sense

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 18:15 (nine years ago)

but seriously... Bieber's obviously committed to trying to make that transition, he's investing a lot in making that happen, he's still in the tabloids, his range of collaborators is expanding = adults will now start paying attention to him. If he doesn't convince as an adult he will bomb, if he does then he's probably on safe ground for the next 5+ years or so.

'journals' was worse than this stuff bc he was doing more straight-ahead R&B instead of R&B pop and his voice is terrible for that sort of thing

he can get by on lite rhythmically nimble records but is not so good at conveying passion thru strength of vocal performance

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 06:55 (nine years ago)

i think the looser rhythms of this faux-tropical and actually tropical stuff complements his strengths very well for that reason actually

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 06:56 (nine years ago)

he can get by on lite rhythmically nimble records but is not so good at conveying passion thru strength of vocal performance

i agree on the latter which is why i don't think they work as well - they're quite understated production-wise and his vocal is pretty foregrounded, and he doesn't sell any of the songs especially well

he basically needs huge-sounding production ("as long as you love me") that makes him a cog in the machine

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 08:53 (nine years ago)

No I'm talking about why journals doesn't work ... On "what do you mean" his vocals are light as a feather, there's no sense of him over singing or reaching for some big dramatic r&b display

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 10:42 (nine years ago)

oh i was still talking about believe, never heard journals

light as a feather is part of the problem, he doesn't overreach and fail but there's not much there - undersinging when you can't get the nuances right is also an issue

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 11:00 (nine years ago)

Journals remains dope. Biebz just wasn't part of the conversation back then. There was no narrative to sell it.

on through the one with big sean i think this is pretty tight altho that one should be way better but bieber's voice can't carry it at all for whatever reason. but the travis scott song is a throwaway, the piano ballads suck and "children" sounds like legit parody (tho skrillex's riff is kinda nice). i like the halsey song a lot which seems impossible... i'm not sure i would've known she was on it if she wasn't billed. second half is really wayward from a conceptual & strategic standpoint.

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 November 2015 05:25 (nine years ago)

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 13 November 2015 05:27 (nine years ago)

if you kept the first 7 tracks, ditched the travis scott record, moved the halsey one up, kept "where are u now" and swapped the other three out with "been you", "get used to me" and "hit the ground" you'd have a great front back to album. almost there! oh well i might just do that myself anyway.

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 November 2015 05:28 (nine years ago)

i like "love yourself" as a song but the sequencing is weird yeah. it's like 3-4 songs too early. also knowing that it's a sheeran record makes it seem a little craven. it's a good song tho.

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 November 2015 05:29 (nine years ago)

yeah "been you" is such a breath of fresh air after all the dogshit preceding it, hard to believe it's the first bonus track

J0rdan is crazy. The Travi$ Scött song is great. As is most of this. It's about four songs too long and it has a Nas verse on it but apart from those things it's a pretty perfect pop album.

like this is bad enough that it makes me reassess my enjoyment of 'where are u now' and 'sorry' and 'what do u mean' in that it is just a crasser more straightforward market share grab for people who found those songs too subtle
plus it allows beebs the opportunity to rah rah his vapid philanthropic pride for (if i am hearing this correctly) "making a difference"

serious lols at Purpose with his sub tuesdays with morrie life lessons
i am compelled to transcribe this for future generations:

i don't know if this is wrong because someone else is telling me that it's wrong
but i feel this so let me just like TRY my best not to let this happen again
we weren't necessarily put in the best position to make the best decisions
you can't be hard on yourself for it; these were the cards that you were given
so you have to understand that these, like, that's not who you are; you know you're trying to be the best you can be, but that's all that you can do
if you don't give it at all you got, you're only cheating yourself
give it all you got, but if it ends up happening, it ends up happening.
that's what's happening with me it's like: i don't giving it all i got, sometimes i'm weak and i'm gonna do it
and it's like, I'm not giving myself grace, I'm just understanding that's just how it is

he thought this was worth recording and putting on an album

too many of the good songs (the singles) are shoved toward the front of the album and even that section is poorly sequenced

hm maybe my expectations were unnecessarily high but the only keeper other than what was out before the album is "company" which i wouldn't be surprised to see as a radio single further down the line

the halsey collaboration threatens to be great for ~the length of its first verse but the brightness of the chorus doesn't contrast well

i'm sure the title track will make a touching closer to his live set, hopefully with the voice recording part scraped out lol

If I was doing this on my own, I would constantly be doing things that are, I mean, I still am doing things that are stupid, but… It just gives me some sort of hope and something to grasp onto, and a feeling of security, and a feeling of being wanted, and a feeling of being desired, and I feel like we can only get so much of that from a human.”

I had stopped listening to him after “Yummy”, but “Peaches” sounds good at least. he’s bought all the r&b, rap and even afropop (Burna Boy on a so-so track) collabs money can buy, but I’m not sure I’m keen to indulge him and his “MLK Interlude”s.

it’s hard to keep up with the guy (if you would want to). I see that apart from a Deluxe version of the album he has now also dropped a new EP which has him channeling Wizkid of all people on the title track:

dyl, Monday, 5 April 2021 23:14 (four years ago)

well it's easily the best single he's released since purpose... the other singles off this album are just totally dire, yummy was a pretty big hit despite being deathly corny, the quavo one i can barely remember how it goes. "peaches" is an up tempo summer song with a memorable chorus, i'm surprised it took them this long to find a song even this good

J0rdan S., Monday, 5 April 2021 23:27 (four years ago)

"yummy" and the quavo song were from the last album not this one, which kinda underscores how indistinctive his music has been and still is in these past couple years

Swag got 1 out of 5 stars in the Belgian Standaard newspaper, mostly because he had said it was going to be his most personal album yet but the reviewer - who had expected real deep revelations about the rocky patch Bieber went through - only heard soulless platitudes, despite all the fancy collaborators.

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Friday, 18 July 2025 17:47 (one month ago)

i think this album is fun as a conversation piece, as a body of music i think it’s only okay. the production is obviously pretty great throughout, but you would hope that would be the case given the people involved. lyrically i just find a lot of this album a bit laughable, which sure it’s justin bieber but there’s a tension between the tastefulness of the production and the cheesiness of a lot of the writing that doesn’t resolve for me. something that’s great about both mk.gee and dijon is that a lot of the times the lyrics are impressionistic, or direct meaning comes only in shards. it works in tandem w/ the instrumentation in a way that this really broad style of pop writing can’t capture. my fav song is “405” bcuz he’s just repeating a few words for like the entire song

not sure this would make my top 3 bieber albums. they’re all imperfect but i don’t think this is better than believe, journals, or purpose … it might hold together better as an album qua album bcuz of the nature of the production but the best songs on those albums clear this one pretty comfortably for my money

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 July 2025 18:17 (one month ago)

there’s also something about the nature of his relationship… i have a hard time getting into an otherwise pretty good love song that opens by mentioning the creation of an iphone case with a lip gloss holder. just takes me out of it a bit

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 July 2025 18:28 (one month ago)

this feels more like his 20/20 experience than his futuresex/lovesounds. that one was another sumptuously produced album with lazy lyrics and non-specific love songs inspired by a famous wife (biel is roughly 100x more interesting and talented than the former ms. baldwin tho)

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Friday, 18 July 2025 18:36 (one month ago)

I think the key to this album is that if you just have it on in the background it all kinda blends into the above feel somehow, in a way that a lot of it does not if you turn to stare at it directly - just this lowkey chill beats vibesiness with Justin never really rising above the level of a backing vocal choir of snotty man-children muttering and mewing in the middle distance
