Fleetwood Mac?
Steely Dan?
Others?

I guess the followup is who divides ILM posters the most?

iago g., Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

bands or singers, I mean, sorry

iago g., Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

creedence & neil young iirc. my bloody valentine.

Sly and the Family Stone, Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, The Clash are some others

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

clash and t.heads are far from universally loved. they're more in the divisive category.

does anyone not like public enemy? (are they willing to say so?) or run-d.m.c.?

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

talking heads just won the 80s poll. Hardly divisive.

Look up threads with white dudes who play blues especially Stevie Ray Vaughn, that stuff will bring up some harsh venom. A couple of those threads ended up getting locked.

Parliament/Funkadelic would also have to be on the ILM Mount Rushmore. Everybody likes, or at least respect them massively.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 13 December 2009 06:12 (sixteen years ago)

Most divisive is easy: Mariah Carey.

Check the threads...there are some pretty big fans of her on ILM, to put it mildly. There's also another equally passionate faction who think she sucks ass.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 13 December 2009 11:45 (sixteen years ago)

It's surely not The Beatles although it should have been IMO. I think most people here respect The Beatles to some extent, as in like some of their output, but those who (in spite of that) consider them overrated are probably in majority here. They may be one of the greatest white guys with guitars bands ever, but they were white guys with guitars, and some people just can't get over that here.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 13 December 2009 11:54 (sixteen years ago)

in the end i think Prince would slightly edge out Steely Dan

I'm guessing "most divisive" would be some good old-fashioned British indie, like, say Slowdive

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 December 2009 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

We've done this before - it's either Kraftwerk or New Order but the Beatles contingent has grown, ditto the Kate Bush contingent. Steely Dan are a minority concern really and Prince would considerably outstrip them.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 14 December 2009 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

matt DC otm - kraftwerk, prince & new order way out in front. plus beatles haters seem more vocal than plentiful. talking heads, kate bush, can (?), p-funk also strong contenders.

numerous pet shop boys mentions somewhat baffling. i get the impression that they're mostly a uk thing, and not much loved by those who aren't true believers.

Fleetwood Mac - love, more than ever before.
Steely Dan - used to love, bit bored of them now.
Creedence - big gap in my musical knowledge with this lot.
Neil Young - love.
My Bloody Valentine - nothing wrong with them, but I am largely indifferent.
Sly and the Family Stone - love, but hardly ever play.
Kraftwerk - see Fleetwood Mac.
Talking Heads - see Steely Dan.
The Clash - it's complicated.
New Order - see Sly and the Family Stone.
Public Enemy - love.
Run DMC - like a lot, but stop short of love.
Pet Shop Boys - love, but only up to mid-90s.
The Fall - respect, but not love.

mike t-diva, Monday, 14 December 2009 12:33 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac: Largely indifferent, although I love "Tango In The Night". Close to dislike for their Peter Green era material (apart from "Albatross" and "Man Of The World")
Steely Dan: Love them
creedence: Again rather indifferent
neil young: Love his output from "Harvest" and earlier. Quite indifferent towards the rest.
my bloody valentine: Don't like much at all
Sly and the Family Stone: I don't love, but I like
Kraftwerk: Lots of respect for these guys, even though there are better synthpop bands from the 80s
Talking Heads: Kind of indifferent although they were at times very good
The Clash: Love "London Calling"
New Order: OK
public enemy: Hard for me to like these people. :)
run-d.m.c.: Ditto (and I hate them more than I do PE)
Pet Shop Boys: Love
the fall: Pretty close to hate

Fleetwood Mac - love
Steely Dan - love, but not unreservedly
Creedence - love
Neil Young - love
My Bloody Valentine - I've tried numerous times to get into them, but just can't.
Sly and the Family Stone - enjoy, but don't own
Kraftwerk - haven't heard except Tour de France (love) and Pocket Calc (hate)
Talking Heads - I like Sand in the Vaseline, but get bored with the albums.
The Clash - Hate with my heart.
New Order - enjoy the singles, but purchasing Technique on the basis of the 80s poll leads me to think they're overrated
Public Enemy - see MBV
Run DMC - enjoy, but not enough to invest in an album
Pet Shop Boys - have never heard, barring WEG.
The Fall - Dislike based on This Nation's Saving Grace.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 14 December 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - indifferent.
Steely Dan - again
Creedence - Bought a 2LP compil in a fit of pleased, played it, didn't like it enough.
Neil Young - I actively avoid. Too much to go through if I found I liked him. Have heard enough to know I don't.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless.
Sly and the Family Stone - Some.
Kraftwerk - Mainly the early stuff.
Talking Heads - unfussed.
The Clash - Like, just less as much.
New Order - PCL, and so on
Public Enemy - never happened for me.
Run DMC - Some, but not.
Pet Shop Boys - A couple. but a couple is all you need.
The Fall - Loads of different eras.

DustyLoops, Monday, 14 December 2009 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

I added some bands at the end:

Fleetwood Mac - not really my cup of tea but ok
Steely Dan - they had some great moments but overall I don't like their slick sound
Creedence - love them in moderation, love the rough sound
Neil Young - more or less unconditional love
My Bloody Valentine - used to be fascinated by them, love is not the right word
Sly and the Family Stone - don't really now but I am more and more getting into funk & soul
Kraftwerk - from Autobahn on they bored me to death, love the early Kraftwerk incarnation with rother
Talking Heads - love the early stuff, don't like remain in light at all
The Clash - don't care at all
New Order - love the first album and some of the singles, most albums are full of filler though
Public Enemy - rap is not my cup of tea
Run DMC - see above
Pet Shop Boys - no love, their music is nice, that's all
The Fall - like some, don't care for most stuff
Beatles - lots of love, only listen to them by chance though, had my share
Cocteau Twins - used to love their sound, have grown out of it
Joy Division - love and only love
Kinks - don't know them too well, love some stuff i have heard, like other stuff
Massive Attack - in love with their records, their music doesn't work live though
Pixies - love them for their punch
Portishead - in love with their sound and her voice
Radiohead - the love is fading
Rolling Stones - if they had stopped making music 20 years ago I would love them more, they are ok though
Roxy Music - love for everything up to Avalon
Smiths - probably my most beloved band
Sonic Youth - love them still but they should think about calling it quits
Talk Talk - a pretty new love (only about 5 years old) which is almost as strong as my smiths love
Velvet Underground - love
Yo La Tengo - a great love which is not as great as it used to be ten years ago

The annex, then:

Beatles - Grew up with them, now my kids are growing through them...
Cocteau Twins - Never did.
Joy Division - Like them more now then I did then.
Kinks - Got a 10CD box (see related thread), like them a fair bit.
Massive Attack - Some records, yeah.
Pixies - Tried to, failed.
Portishead - Tried to, succeeded!
Radiohead - Not as much as you lot (is that even possible?)
Rolling Stones - The later Decca stuff
Roxy Music - First few singles...
Smiths - Grew up with them, don't need them now, but ...
Sonic Youth - boat unfloated.
Talk Talk - Still amazed about the levels of love they get.
Velvet Underground - love
Yo La Tengo - No opinion, I know not.

Mark G, Monday, 14 December 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

Beatles - Love, love, love, love and love! But a lot of people here don't.
Cocteau Twins - Indifferent, if it's even possible to be indifferent towards them.
Joy Division - Like New Order much better. Dislike Ian Curtis' voice.
Kinks - Love their 60s output. Should have broken up in 1970 or thereabouts.
Massive Attack - Like quite a lot, and wouldn't really dispute them. Perhaps my favourite "hip hop" act.
Pixies - Indifferent minus
Portishead - Indifferent
Radiohead - Love "OK Computer" and "The Bends", a bit more indifferent towards their 00s output
Rolling Stones - They're OK. Even more recent stuff is.
Roxy Music - Love their later material, the earlier stuff I like less, but it is interesting and grows on me.
Smiths - Close to love for their last two albums, but the earlier stuff I don't really like all that much.
Sonic Youth - Hate
Talk Talk - Love some of their albums, but not the same albums that most people here do.
Velvet Underground - Love the occasional song, hate other material, and am a bit indifferent towards most.
Yo La Tengo - Indifferent
Stevie Wonder - Really love his music, and I suppose a lot of other people here do too. I mean, if we can forgive him for "I Just Called To Say I Love You". :)

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 14 December 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - Like a lot
Steely Dan - True, deep, everlasting love
Creedence - you must be crazy. If I want to listen to bad Howlin Wolf impersonations I will play Captain Beefheart and sing along
Neil Young - Like a lot
My Bloody Valentine - a bit noisy but 'You Made Me Realise' is quite good
Sly And The Family Stone - Passionate love
Kraftwerk - Love
Talking Heads - Loved but bitter divorce at time of 'Little Creatures'
The Clash - Love with ambivalence
New Order - Huge Love
Public Enemy -Oh for fuck's sake who doesn't love ITANOMTHUB, but come on now, listen to How You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul 5 times and then come back here and tell me about love
Run DMC - Love
Pet Shop Boys - Love
The Fall - Love

PS I'm not trying to start trouble but often it appears that there is boundless love here for The Cure. I Like The Cure.

eh? speak up.

m the g, Monday, 14 December 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

Srsly though, I love MBV as much as the next man (unless that man is Raggett) but live I do think one might be missing some of the more subtle nuances...

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Monday, 14 December 2009 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

wouldn't argue with that, but their live bludgeon is sufficiently potent that I don't miss the nuance too much.

m the g, Monday, 14 December 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

mbv are obviously a studio band. there is a reason that it took them years to record "loveless". live they were rather dull in the early nineties judging from the one concert i attended in the ancienne belgique in brussels.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 14 December 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

Beatles - "Love" barely begins to cover it.
Cocteau Twins - Likeable enough, in small doses. A little goes a long way.
Joy Division - Used to love, but over-exposure means that I could cheerfully never hear them again.
Kinks - Love some of the hits, but no emotional attachment to the actual band.
Massive Attack - Used to love, but I've gone right off them.
Pixies - A hair's breadth away from love.
Portishead - Like a lot. Wish I could say love, but in all honesty I can't. It's not them, it's me.
Radiohead - Used to love, but not even In Rainbows has arrested the diminishing returns.
Rolling Stones - Love.
Roxy Music - Admire greatly, but have never quite crossed the "love" line.
Smiths - *** LOVE ***
Sonic Youth - Like a lot, in an abstract, theoretical way - but in practice I rarely listen.
Talk Talk - Never got round to investigating them properly.
Velvet Underground - Used to love, bit bored of them these days.
Yo La Tengo - Like, occasionally like a lot.
The Cure - Love the first album, love the first ten years' worth of singles, never got into subsequent albums. Love them when they're pop, basically.

mike t-diva, Monday, 14 December 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

xp mbv are obviously a studio band?

given that they play live and do it exceptionally well, I'd say that they're obviously adept both in the studio and on stage.

m the g, Monday, 14 December 2009 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - some of the peter green stuff is dope! ok i haven't given rumours/tusk a fair crack, need to
Steely Dan - i don't dislike the dan, and what i've heard has had some stellar moments, but again i'm yet to make a commitment, suspect i'd eventually like them
Creedence - permit me to plead ignorance
Neil Young - hmm. not really my thing for the most part, a few songs here and there strike a chord
My Bloody Valentine - loveless is a titanic, thrilling work
Sly and the Family Stone - this stuff washes over me a bit when listened to in private but it certainly makes for some of the better party music
Kraftwerk - like in theory (although not love); i've not heard much, and will doubtless give them more of a listen in future
Talking Heads - they get great sounds! great little textural patterns. but their songs are structured in a manner calculated to bore me
The Clash - they have a time and a place and they piss me off as much as they cheer me; london calling and a few of the early singles are great
New Order - don't get the outright adoration at all
Public Enemy - need to explore
Run DMC - maybe need to explore but not so mandatory
Pet Shop Boys - uh they're ok
The Fall - BEST FECKING BAND EVER (almost)...absolute, joyful, unconditional love
Beatles - awesome, awesome, awesome. love 'em.
Cocteau Twins - quite good
Joy Division - shamefully i haven't listened to these guys all that much; will correct. from what i've heard i'd like 'em ok
Kinks - quite a lot of classic tunes in there
Massive Attack - first record is kinda boring, second has 'protection', third is truly wonderful, rest i don't know/care
Pixies - not sure. part of me thinks they could have done more with their talents, part of me realises they didn't need to
Portishead - yeah, great
Radiohead - yeah, really great
Rolling Stones - not great. sorry. no love for the family name and all that
Roxy Music - love this band
Smiths - do. not. get.
Sonic Youth - i dig most of what i've heard without letting them fully in just yet, but yeah a thumbs-up from me
Talk Talk - fucking brilliant for two records. then they got way better. unfuckwithable.
Velvet Underground - eh they released some great stuff
Yo La Tengo - some good songs, a lot of murk
The Cure - YES <3

Totally forgot to think of jazz artists in response to this question. Those are all good calls.

I'd add Charles Mingus.

what about pavement? together with sonic youth they are the indie boy's dream band i reckon.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 14 December 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

maybe duke ellington because i'm assuming he is enough of a proper "composer" and "melodic" enough to even jibe with geir's bizarro worldview...just speculating though....will the notorious g.e.i.r. weigh in here pls?

I'm the anti-ILM poster, at least by most people's tastes. I don't care for, dislike or loathe the following: Miles Davis, Kraftwerk, The Fall, Pavement and Fleetwood Mac.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

which ones do you loathe?

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 December 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

Don't care for: I like one Fleetwood Mac song ("Tusk") and one Fall tune ("Cruiser's Creek"). Dislike: Kraftwerk bore me into aggravation and except for the late 60s quintet Davis will drive me from a room. Loathe: Pavement - despite liking them in '91, the live show I went to was so egregiously bad and they showed such disdain for their paying audience that I would be hard pressed to refrain from taking a swing at Malkmus were he in my presence. The attitude displayed live seemed present on Crooked Rain and I've never bothered to go further.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I'm a pretty passive guy since I have at least a bit of like for everyone mentioned here.

^^^ This. There very few acts I'm unreservedly in love with (the first 7 Roxy Music albums) many I have heard a lot by and like (Fleetwood Mac, CCR, Neil Young) and a bunch more I haven't really heard enough of to comment (Can, Fall, Sonic Youth.)

Although the lists are getting kinda long/unwieldy/arbitrary, I think they are an ineresting snapshot of the ILM mind.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

Filling in the gaps, on the assumption that some stats geek is counting:

Curtis Mayfield - BIG love.
Fela Kuti - Even BIGGER love.
Parliament-Funkadelic - It pains me to admit this, but Clinton has never quite done it for me.
Aphex Twin - Am I the only ILM-er never to have heard the Selected Ambient Works? Some utter brilliance, and a whole lot of aargh-my-ears-make-it-stop.
Herbie Hancock - Respect, but love would be over-stating it.
Can - An ever-growing love.
The Roots - Some good stuff, but I can take them or leave them.
Madlib - Don't know.
Brian Eno - Love his interviews, don't often love his music, but I had an AHA NOW I GET THIS breakthrough moment with Another Green World a couple of months ago, so love might still be in the offing.
Stevie Wonder - Love Love Love!
T-Rex - Love the singles, don't need the albums.
ELO - See T.Rex.
Abba - Love, but we're on a break.

I like lots of these acts individually, depending on the song, but put them together as a group like this and I hate them all

middlebrow Starbucks coffee table music

i don't go to starbucks but i probably would if they really played mbv, joy div, the fall, sonic youth, the cocteau twins, yo la tengo, roxy music, talk talk, fela kuti, aphex twin and parliament. somehow i doubt it though.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

There was a Sonic Youth Starbucks compilation I guess.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Never been in a Starbucks but what's so strange about them playing Roxy Music??!!!???

"Guys who are posting this list of middlebrow Starbucks coffee table music and giving your own one-word reviews: do you realize that no one is reading?"

Several xpost: i'm reading them ( slow day for me today )

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

i was once stuck in a starbucks for nearly an hour with this deliberately "odd" glitchy remix of a radiohead song playing on seemingly endless repeat (couldn't leave was waiting for someone)

it was the closest i've ever come to killing someone over music in my life

mind you, it could have just been caffeine psychosis i had been up for 3 days at that point

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

Worse music I ever heard in a cafe was some godawful Frank Zappa thing

I hear lots of good music in Starbucks these days: early New Order, B-52's, A Certain Ratio, Joni Mitchell, Coltrane just last weekend.

B-52s - Love

Never been in a Starbucks but what's so strange about them playing Roxy Music??!!!???

i should have added before "avalon". somehow that is the only roxy music album i can imagine in a starbucks. but maybe i am totally wrong and they play the first five albums on repeat in the starbucks next to the frankfurt stock exchange.

x-post
maybe i should seriously consider going to starbucks. joni mitchell, coltrane and b-52s? that's cool.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

dunno, last time I heard "War Inna Babylon" Max Romeo, was in a Starbucks.

I don't know about Germany, but Roxy Music were always pretty popular in the UK, before and after "Avalon"! (xpost)

The Fall
Can
The Beatles
Joy Division
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Smiths
Velvet Underground
T Rex

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac – OK but ILM's love for 'em is boring as hell
Steely Dan – I like them but I don't spend much time listening to them
Creedence – the bees knees
Neil Young – great
My Bloody Valentine – blah blah blah, no they were good, it must be said
Sly and the Family Stone – what's not to like?
Kraftwerk – love at first sight
Talking Heads – love some of their stuff, but left cold by most of it
The Clash – grew out of them when I was 16
New Order – haven't listened to them in ages, but obv. great
Public Enemy – respect and all that, but I'm not going to be listening to them too often
Run DMC – should listen to them again!
Pet Shop Boys – again, respect them and what they do but I've got better things to do
The Fall – loved them once upon a time
Curtis Mayfield – obv. great
Fela Kuti – like what I've heard but haven't heard that much
Parliament/Funkadelic – hard to beat really
Aphex Twin – never did much for me
Herbie Hancock – comme ci, comme ca
Can – crazy name, crazy guys, who can top 'em?
The Roots – have I heard them?
Madlib – ditto
The Beatles – twist (and shout) my arm and I will admit they were quite good in places
Cocteau Twins – never made much of an impression on me
Joy Division – great, but I haven't made any effort to listen to them in years
The Kinks – really great
Massive Attack – undoubtedly good
The Pixies – grew out of them
Radiohead – in one ear and out the other
The Rolling Stones – hard to argue against
Roxy Music – smashing!
The Smiths – cannot be arsed with this lot, though they were obv. talented
Sonic Youth – got bored with them eventually
Talk Talk – great
Velvet Underground – love that knows no bounds
Yo La Tengo – who?
Brian Eno – I <3 Bri
Stevie Wonder – The Genius
T Rex – the most fun you can have with your bellbottoms on
ELO – fun group
Abba - even more fun group

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

i actually counted the smiths as love, mark. kraftwerk too i think. should we do a poll with all acts with 5 and more votes?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

No, you need to do a series of polls where you vote one out each week.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

but the one act who gets voted out last is not necessarily the one which is most loved. it's just the one people find less annoying.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

tom, is fun group a subset of love?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

"Like", I'd say

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

the problem with polling this is that there are so many gradations of love/hate

should my LIKE A GOD TO ME count more than a vague shrug of not really being familiar with?

should a vague "used to love" have the same weight as HATE HATE HATE KILL WITH GUNS?

the only way to do this would be a weighted average. with write-in votes. and lots of maths

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

HATE HATE HATE KILL WITH GUNS has nothing to do with love so I think it should just be ignored in this context. The same goes for shrug. If we'd poll all acts with 5 or more love votes we would almost poll all suggested acts (except Run DMC, Massive Attack, Yo La Tengo, Herbie Hancock, Roots, Madlib, ELO and Abba!). The whole thing seems rather pointless as the usual suspects will win anyway.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

bullshit, ilm hates black music

The Modern Whig Party, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

you're saying that hatred has nothing to do with love? this isn't a binary, it's a sliding greyscale. i mean if you're going to measure something as abstract as "love" you've got to quantify it somehow.

though perhaps hatred isn't the opposite of love wrt music - indifference is? can a big big love be cancelled out or balanced by dozens of shrugs?

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

a big love obviously cannot be cancelled by anything. it can only be boosted by other big loves.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

right then i'm creating an army of sock puppets to make big big love with me

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

Is that a Fleetwood Mac big love or a Pixies big big love?

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

as long as it isn't a big mac love any love is a good love

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - Like, closer to indifferent for some of their stuff though
Steely Dan - never listened to them
Creedence - ditto
Neil Young – indifferent mostly, but haven't listened to that much
My Bloody Valentine – life-changingly wonderful when i first heard them, still love.
Sly and the Family Stone – never heard
Kraftwerk – never got into
Talking Heads – love love love
The Clash – mostly indifferent, but like a few songs.
New Order – indifferent, and would propose Blue Monday as the most overrated song of all time. love "Regret" though.
Public Enemy – love some tracks, but haven't listened to in a long time.
Run DMC – don't like.
Pet Shop Boys – generally indifferent, the odd moment here or there i suppose
The Fall – ditto
Curtis Mayfield – never heard
Fela Kuti – ditto
Parliament/Funkadelic – sort of ditto
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 = masterpiece, otherwise merely like
Herbie Hancock – never heard
Can – only heard tago mago, which i've never been able to get into
The Roots – phrenology is an ok album
Madlib – never heard
The Beatles – love
Cocteau Twins – love
Joy Division – half a dozen fantastic moments - "Disorder" and "Atmosphere" in particular - otherwise very overrated
The Kinks – don't like, apart from "Waterloo Sunset"
Massive Attack – like
The Pixies – love
Radiohead – love some stuff, merely like other stuff
The Rolling Stones – some good songs, but never obsessed over them
Roxy Music – love
The Smiths – love
Sonic Youth – don't like
Talk Talk – last two albums utter masterpieces - "New Grass", on a good day, quite possibly my favourite piece of music ever composed.
Velvet Underground – love
Yo La Tengo – never properly gave a wiggle
Brian Eno – like him as musician by himself, love some of his other associations
Stevie Wonder – never gave a proper fondle
T Rex – some good songs, i suppose
ELO – love what little I've heard
Abba - love

Boston are better than that. Also I'd rather listen to them than St. Etienne. (xp)

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:02 (sixteen years ago)

Wasn't there an old thread (2002-3, maybe) where we discovered that XTC were the only band that were hated by virtually nobody on ILM? That's not the same as LOVE LOVE LOVE, but a high degree of "not hate" (i.e. having a very high approval rating) also counts for something ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

i don't hate xtc but i don't like them neither. which may prove your theory. actually my problem with xtc is that i do not get them most of the times.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:05 (sixteen years ago)

XTC has got a major boost since then thanks to beloved ILX sockpuppet "gangsta andy partridge".

I'd be surprised if a few people didn't hate XTCon ILM, but I'm not sure enough people actually care either way for them to win any such contest

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the question that was asked at the time is not exactly the same as what is being discussed now.

Which Band Are People Most Indifferent To On ILM?

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

think about how you feel about some maiden aunt you see, like, once every three years

now think about your girlfriend

now try to tell me that the most "not hated" artist is the same as the "most loved" band

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:11 (sixteen years ago)

I wondered why the Beach Boys weren't on the list

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

btw the band used the most as a punchline on ILX? Gay Dad or Killing Joke?

no mate bruce springsteen is the american jimmy barnes (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

It's more Gay Dad's drummer than the whole band

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

what i feel for the beach boys, although it involves a substantive amount of respect and warm fuzziness, is not love

i don't think this question is about merely liking or tolerating, it's about that kind of slavish fanboy devotion that makes ilm such an interesting/frustrating place to inhabit sometimes
