original bgm, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

holy fuck, "Stargazer" is amazing! i'm ashamed to admit I only own the first Rainbow album. God, Blackmore was such a riffmaster, was he just asleep on the 'Stormbringer' LP? must have been, obviously rejuvenated later on by the partnership of Dio..

anyway, fantastic stuff... I obviously need to fill in my Rainbow gap (I say "gap" because I actually own a copy of 'Straight Between the Eyes' -- all-time classic for the completely essential track "Power"!!!)

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, dio truly is the perfect complement to a heavy riff. and definitely check out rising - it's great!

one more:

Secret Machines haven't really worked out what they are or what they most like doing, which is in some ways a good thing. They got a new guitarist and released my favourite record of theirs, but nobody was paying any attention by then. Their drummer is kickass, primal, wondrous etc. They can rock the fuck out when they want to, but they're often found composing ballads or little alt-rock numbers. Sturm und drang suits them. Maybe start with 'Now Here Is Nowhere' (also a cracking record, probably their *actual* best), but yeah they bring it much more than they're given credit for. They're really not that noodly. Third-era Soft Machine is some of my favourite shit ever, but they're wise not to fuck with it.

original bgm, Thursday, 17 December 2009 03:46 (fifteen years ago)

One note of caution - aside from the opening track (heavy awesomeness) and the closing track (krautrock brilliance), NHIN is largely (good) heavy-ish alt-rock. If that puts you off, don't despair, because the self-titled album brings a lot more heft (Last Believer, Drop Dead, despite nicking the First Wave Intact drum-riff wholesale, is my favourite SM song) even if a couple of the songs (Underneath The Concrete, I'm looking at you) are kinda tired pop retreads.

hahahaha i did warn you! listen to it loud when you're ready. it is the godzilla of groove.

like having an eternal kazoo in your underwear (acoleuthic), Thursday, 17 December 2009 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

a couple people have mentioned gojira but didn't pick any specific song, so i took that liberty...

from mars to sirius and the way of all flesh have some pretty heavy riffs throughout so it's hard to pinpoint.

surprised no one mentioned shrinebuilder, though a few "parent" bands have been included, (the melvins, neurosis)
there's a recurring riff in this song that starts at the 3 minute mark that's soul-crushing, if you ask me.

At this moment I'm thinking the first song on Melvins Stag.

Also a couple tunes from Neurosis Times of Grace, and the first Goatsnake LP has some killer grooves too.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

For me, so far, it's Nazareth, Scientist, and all the Electric Wizard and Sabbath tracks. There is also the Kraftwerk rarity, "Heavy Metal Kids", which is in the vein as the above-linked Kraftwerk and is heavier than your girlfriend. It's here...

please excuse my fucking lame attempt at being witty, I wrote that minutes after waking up. And then the sad thing about the internet is that, in the year 2035, I can revisit this thread and wince all over again.
