i <3 guido - imo he should be receiving all the plaudits that joy orbison is atm, and i think he's easily the best of the dubstep-not-dubstep lot these days. "way u make me feel" and "orchestral lab" are beautiful.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 08:50 (fifteen years ago)

everything i've heard from dude sounds bland at first blush, then halfway through the development wows me and then it's ten repeats later and I don't want to listen to anything else all day.
And that's December 20 and 21 for you.

hahahaha! i know what you mean tho man, im starting to feel like the secret to the riddle is that dubstep doesn't really exist because everything that I hear that I like that is "dubstep" turns out to be "not really dubstep" to the point where I'm leaving Rinse.fm on all the time in the hopes of hearing this elusive bird we call dubstep. A huge portion of my favourite releases this year, even ones that were DEFINITELY NOT DUBSTEP had a whiff of a dubstep vibe abt them or used that word in their press releases (basic channel guy's remix of that tortoise track, the xx, moderat) and also shit like shackleton, joker, ikonika. I don't really buy the "its the mainstreamification" angle because hey that was 2006 and uk funky is the hip name to drop now, but it feels like for such a buzzy word right now, the actual dubstep is hard to find and you have to be "in the know" maybe?

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

maybe this could be the "fake dubstep for douchebags who don't know what it is" thread

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

me: the guy from the xx does pretty cool remixes, kinda dubsteppy
friend: what exactly is dubstep anyway?
me: i don't really know

Gemmy is the third guy in the trio with Joker and Guido (Apparently they're supposed to be collaborating on a record at some point). He's not quite at the others level yet but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

fully obsessing over Guido "Way U Make Me Feel" right now!! Its great!!

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

All this stuff is way better than dubstep proper but Guido is rivalling Joker to be the best of the lot. Hope there are lots of vocalists on both their albums, preferably ones we've never heard of. Really love Way U Make Me Feel, Beautiful Complication is very good as well but sounds better sped up in the mix.

Guido's FACT mixes from December and another one from earlier this year are both incredible.

Makes sense. Since there's a load of great stuff by other similar artists linked on here, and we're going to be hearing a lot of these dudes over the coming year, I've retitled the thread. Also it means we won't have to keep reviving a thread with 'Wonky' in the title.

Think on this thread so far we're going a bit heavy on the chimy IDM side and not enough of the nasty bass-heavy videogame side.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

I know that tune...I sort of like it but like with a lot of music like that I keep waiting for a rapper to come in.

gold panda is british chillwave imo

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not sure how much mileage we'll get out of being exclusionary on this thread, given that the gap between Darkstar and Joker is fucking huge, but then again I get the feeling that whether they fit in is less an issue of music and more one of whether they go to the pub with one another. FWIW I like Gold Panda but he fits better with Four Tet and people than here.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

fuck this 'lovely' shit. give me joker any day. most of this 'soulful' dubstep is just fucking trip hop rebooted and is actually really more boring than it is beautiful or delicate. its just wishy washy. never really got into half that stuff on deep medi from silkie and that lot for the same reason.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 25 January 2010 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think anything on this thread so far sounds like re-booted triphop

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

what's the meaning inferred with "purple"

and "Way U Make Me Feel" is miles above anything else so far posted (youtube clips-wise)

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

the bristol dudes (guido, gemy and especially joker) refer to their music as "purple" or "purple wow" - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/12/guido-joker-gemmy-purple-bristol

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

*gemmy

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

purple wow is joker/guido/that other dude from bristol(?) they have a partic sound that started getting called purple or purple wow largely off the back of some quote and calling one of their tracks purple city

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

lol

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

"gemmy"

app this guy is good but i don't know anyone who has heard anythig by him

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

and yeah it doesn't sound like rebooted trip-hop to me, though obv it ~shares a lineage~

i think where some of the dismissers are falling down is that any two given artists from within this genre-not-genre tend not to sound much like each other - you could group the bristol dudes together, the glasgow ones, the ones coming from a housier background, the techier ones, but it's pretty much impossible to dismiss it all as reheated trip-hop/idm - you have to specify which artists you're talking about

xps!!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

as far as other terms being floated, rustie and 8bitch are trying to make "tropical" happen i think, and IIRC joe muggs refers to it as "mutant funk" in print

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 25 January 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know if this is the right thread, but Starkey's new tune, "Knob Twiddler" is fucking fantastic.

rennavate, Monday, 25 January 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

Plaxico, i posted a Gemmy track up thread. He has a pretty good one on Mary Anne Hobbs "Wild Angels" compilation too.

Number None, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

i was referring to stuff like beautiful complication has essentially going for the same vibe if not exact sound as trip hop. though on re-listen its equally like R&B stuck into dubstep. not a great R&B song at that either. but then i cant stand that 'tell me tell me' track thats been getting played for what seems like a thousand years by everyone either. mutant funk i think only works for a small percentage of whats happening at the mo - stuff like lucky me, joker, and a few others. not everyone.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

most floating points ive heard for eg sounds like fly lo x house.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 09:51 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno if this is the right thread for this to go but one of my favourite things in the 2-step era was garage remixes of american r'n'b tunes. Ive heard uk funky remixes of aaliyah (ill blu) and jeremih (venom and damage) but what awesome dubstep'n'b remixes haven't i heard?

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

we're already at post-dubstep? i was only made aware of dubstep last year.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

post-dubstep is welcome if it starts bringing well-dressed/groomed people to dubstep nights. in montreal dubstep is the domain of teenage ravers, white dudes with dreadlocks, lesbians, and hippies over thirty.

hmmn yeah i rly love purple city/psychedelic runway but this and the previous one not so much

nakhchivan, Friday, 26 March 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

Also Guido's aforementioned FACT mix is a winner.

sam500, Friday, 26 March 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)

Yes Tron deploys some of the same tricks as his previous big singles, but it's still good. I love the main melody as it's repeated in different timbres, especially the eastern sounding one from Digidesign. For a different side of Joker, check out Snake Eater, which is Dilla style cut-up vocals + purple SNES noise.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

i love that real grinding synth -- it sounds like it's ripping the song apart

Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

the colossal synth lines of those early singles are kinda untouchable

without them you are reminded that this stuff isn't so very far removed from d_____p

nakhchivan, Friday, 26 March 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah sounds like the bass motor of an old video game soundchip. I wonder what he might have up his sleeve for a full-length though. For me, he's the definitive wonky guy, maybe he fits in nicely with all the glo-fi stuff.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

tron's nice but i don't think it's quite there

nakhchivan, Friday, 26 March 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)

the various productions remix of lauren pritchard's "stuck" that i posted in the dance partisans thread is relevant to this thread's interests

as is the incredibly good imminent ikonika album, 8bit bleeps and synth viscera. great cover art too -

Hmm not sure about those tunes. Definitely more dancefloor friendly, beats are more Joy Orbison/2-steppy than Dilla lurch. Was never sold on Ikonika initially from her various hyperdub stuff...this misses the chewy, corroded, slightly fucked-up quality of the best 'wonky' I've heard. Heading over to Dance Partisans for that remix now.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

those ikonika are kinda cool

i dig joker & guido more than all other dubstep/dubstep offshoots cuz (joker esp) they sound like rap beats

Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

ha, ikonika used to be a j dilla-inspired hip-hop producer. (and before that a drummer in various hardcore bands, when she was 11.)

you've heard joker's "gully brook lane" right? his first big tune from 08 - still his BIGGEST in terms of physically affecting sound too

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah -- i like to imagine that joker & guido tracks are actually vintage timbaland beats that he never released because they were too jagged to rap over

Violent (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 March 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)

brother from another mother talking there.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 March 2010 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

this is the only track i have of an mc trying to rap over a joker beat, durrty goodz. dunno if there are any more - it's not that great though. i've heard djs drop hip-hop vocals over joker beats out though, it usually seems to be ludacris for some reason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOl7jsBGkKU

however, much much better along the same lines is the same mc vocalling starkey's "gutter music" (and starkey is def a must-hear for joker fans...)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7n1UMONzFY

and the lead single from starkey's new album, "ok luv" with badness.

That said I don't think of it as endemic to the idea of this thread or what I think the idea is - it's quite... macho (I want to use less of a pejorative but it's too early to think) and sometimes batters you a bit - I'm fine with this, just sayin

Not a musician, but I thought of Justin Fashanu for some reason (DJ Mencap), Friday, 26 March 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

There's a pair of Mount Kimbie remix EP's out at the moment. The James Blake version of Maybes is pretty nice.

Number None, Monday, 5 April 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

so, two eps and two remix eps? they must really hate albums.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Monday, 5 April 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

Album is out in June apparently

Number None, Monday, 5 April 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

considering how different those eps are from each other, its hard to know what the album will sound like. if they split the difference ill be pretty happy.

plax (ico), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

I have now have a playlist I shuffle around on that's Mount Kimbie, James Blake, that Darkstar cover/remix of Radiohead's Videotape, and... what else should I throw in there?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's gonna be the single, you can hear it on Soundcloud. Kinda weird after listening to the instrumental so much

very much looking forward to this though i feel i've already heard half the album already.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

was hoping that was going to be an MJ cover

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the vocal "way u make me feel" does sound weird - yolanda's got a great voice but it always felt like that song was so melodic that the different riffs were doing the singing

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

oh man i'm really excited for this. haven't heard anything since orchestral lab/wummf

hobbes, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

this is the only track i have of an mc trying to rap over a joker beat, durrty goodz. dunno if there are any more

I've got a version of Tempah T over Gullybrook Lane. It's a bit shit though, because, well, it's Tempah T.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

Also why is Chakra not on the Guido album? It's amazing and I really want a proper version of it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

The new Booka Shade is pretty awesome. "Renegade" is dooooooooope.

rennavate, Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:29 (fifteen years ago)

Another teaser for the Yolanda track on the album. Pinch feat. Yolanda - Get Up (Guido Mix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lqfchVqVlc

Better than the Lauren Pritchard mix I think.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 April 2010 09:07 (fifteen years ago)

this vocal mix of of "way u make me feel" is actually really good

goon with the wind (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 April 2010 09:17 (fifteen years ago)

so...everyone needs to have copped the ikonika album now, it's out. this is my absolute favourite on it, it's like being in a shoot 'em up computer game.

i kno there was a lot of talk abt how dubsteppy this britney track was a t the time, but it really does sound more like ikonika 2me than anything that was around at the time

Yeah, this is fantastic. "Take Me Higher" is really hitting the spot right now.

Number None, Sunday, 9 May 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'm fairly impressed with Guido's album, too. However, and I'm surprised given the strength of the productions already, but the "Way U Make Me Feel" vocal version makes me wish the album had more vocals.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 10 May 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this is gorgeous stuff, he's got a great feel for melody, space and texture. I'd heard almost all of it before through his various mixes, but it's great to have all the individual tracks in one place.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 May 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

fucking hell "tango"!!!!! this album is amazing

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

I really don't like the vocals on the Guido album. Have been loving the rest though, some of the prettiest electronic music I've heard in ages.

okay anyway the guido album is of course lovely lovely lovely -- is joker putting out an album or?

I heard that Joker had deleted a load of stuff he was working on and started again. Now he's a producer that could definitely do with a load of vocalists on his album.

Matt DC, Monday, 17 May 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

no i dont want to hear any vocalists on his album. hes one producer whose tracks are so well thought out and executed i dont think he even needs them. tron is just perfect.

Love the Guido album you guys. Thanks!

European Bob (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still enjoying this album but I wish he put as much effort into his beats as his melodies, leaves a lot of tracks here sounding half-finished IMO.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

I don't entirely disagree with that but this will still likely be a top ten album of the year for me

i'm gonna need a +1 so me & a friend can kick you in the balls (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 22 July 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

it's probably my fave album of the year, easily top 3

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

Nice! What are the other two? I was doing good earlier in the year with keeping up with new albums, but I'm totally slipping now

elephant rob, Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

probably big boi or badu or lcd, but in this vein, james blake's 'cmyk' ep has really grown on me a lot. and i was super impressed with the baths record on first listen, but haven't felt like going back to it much.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Thursday, 5 August 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

kinda liking cinnamon chasers; are they considered dubstep or chillwave or wtf?

Would anyone object to the coining of the term "sidestep" to refer to post-dubstep music?

If not, I'm coining it now.
