love her. No thread on her. Drake talks about her a lot. She pops up on that Young Money "Bedrock" shit, which is a late entry for song of the year for me 2009. Think she's going to be huge?

― some dude, Friday, 1 January 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
When she's good, she's pretty enjoyable, imo.
The Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape is pretty solid, esp. the title track, although that's as much due to the Sasha sample as anything else.

Honestly, I'm not sure how she'll sustain over proper album-length stuff, but as a female Wayne-equivalent for mixtapes and remix purposes, I'm fine with it.
― Alex in Montreal, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)
"equivalent" is probably not the right word
― some dude, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
no, it isn't. by a long shot.
i just meant, if she sticks to her female sub-wayne shtick for the next while, i'll be fine with it.

I have NO IDEA. Been trying to figure this out - Lex told me it was Sasha and the internet seems to confirm this but other than that google is no help whatsoever.
But seriously that "hackle mi body" loop is wondrous.

man i was saying this to sarge the other day but equivalent aint THAT far off, she's an 09 wayne clone to the t - can ride a beat just fine but way too many pee pee puns and annoying ass vocal inflections for my taste
― k3vin k., Friday, 1 January 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)
xp: naw, mine doesn't have any of those
not to say all the other verses are great, but Gudda Gudda's verse completely stalls "Bedrock" in it's tracks
― art crut (The Reverend), Friday, 1 January 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)
She blew up a long time ago around here but I guess this is her "base" - she's definitely about to takover the pop world in 2010 and I'm excited for that she's awesome. Love her mixtapes but she's definitely improving, all of her recent guest spots steal the show. Excited to hear the "up owt my face" remix with Mimi
― The Brainwasher, Friday, 1 January 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
i enjoy her verses - i mean she is totally a wayne clone right down to sports references and stuff, but she can flow really well & i def enjoy her crazy wacko 98 different voices a verse schtick
idk if she's gonna blow up per se but "i get crazy" is pretty cool. i could see her having a real hit next year, i think being part of young money is a good look for her because she's so much better than all those dudes. def more than a token chick thing
i like her schtick on this

i <3 nicki. she's obviously v wayne-influenced but i think she's a lot more than just a wayne clone...this is what i wrote on the jukebox a while back:
I love her creative wordplay and commitment to quotability, and the fact that she’s raunchy but too surrealist and weird to box herself into just smutty ho-rap. Really versatile, too: she can handle everything from “Beam Me Up Scotty”, which wouldn’t sound out of place in a dancehall mix, to her touchingly vulnerable verse on the “Best I Ever Had” remix (”It’s so amazing…I figured out this world is ours for the taking”).
i'd add that she seems to have really strong musical instincts - she adapts herself to different beats really well. and she's improving all the time - as great as "beam me up scotty" was this time last year, i couldn't have imagined her pulling something like the "sweet dreams" remix off then.
i like her various voices - rev said elsewhere that it sometimes grates when there's a visual accompaniment b/c she often pulls stupid faces to go with them, she needs to cut that out. but they usually serve her well - like on "itty bitty piggy", when she cranks up the intensity and threatening vibe on that "i'm the wolf, where is little red riding hood" line, and on "saxon" when she bends her voice to the dubstep beat (much better than snoop or eve's excursions into dubstep imo).
i'm looking forward to her album dropping - tinged with a bit of trepidation, because her wacky instincts need to be balanced just right not to grate. and i wouldn't exactly mind if she dropped the babytalk either.

yeah, i dunno, some of my favorite rappers ever are of the 'wacky'/'animated' variety, but i don't feel like she really owns her schtick or pulls it off that well -- seeing her in the 5 Star video (anyone have the hilarious gif from that that they can post btw?) is like watching someone from a terrible sketch comedy troupe or something, like she's being funny on purpose but i'm still laughing at her more than with her.

― Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
her interviews depress me because she comes off pretty humble and self-effacing for a rapper (especially a female rapper, considering how psycho most of the big ones have been historically), and i agree with a lot of what she says about how rap shouldn't take itself too seriously, i just really can't stand her idea of fun.

― Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)
damn, rich four four went extremely hard (in a post about mariah)
Nicki Minaj, whose catchphrases, self-fellating comparisons, and Family Guy approach to referencing (it doesn’t matter if it’s smart or applicable, so long as it’s a reference!) make her an ideal collaborator for this project. Minaj doesn’t only shit on the notion of artistry, she does so on the entire notion of communication. (I’ll say a lot more about this scourge on pop music when her album comes out, as I like her less each day that goes by. For now, my assessment of Minaj is that she is a geyser of unclever nonsense, and as such, a human waste of time.)
― hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
"family guy approach to referencing" is exactly the right way to describe the young money era
― hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
always loathed family guy so yeah, i would agree. 'unclever' wrt this stuff is a nicely precise turn of phrase too, moreso than stoopid or whatever etc.
otoh the artistry/communication line seems flawed in the sense that minaj is plainly an ultimate representation of the culture around her rather than some sort of lurid solo maverick (whatever some might feel) - ie clearly a communication is being made, even if it is shitty in comparison to what we as oldsters hold dear.
(stranger still is running with that angle whilst at the same time writing off mariah's memoirs in opposition to her not keeping up with the times like she did on e=mc2; if mariah had managed to pull a more collaborative album off successfully in 2010 how would the artistry and communication involved therein been any more valid than minaj's? would the "creative energy" sparked off by working with drake really have been something to savour?)
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)
i'm with lex, awesome song. and i don't know, i'm all for taking young money to court for next-level dumb shit but i kind of feel like you guys are missing the point for being all "swinging from a vine mango LOL" one a song like this tbh.

― hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 02:03 (fifteen years ago)
it's just a total mess, altho the bridge is nice
i don't really think the "you're missing the point by paying attention to the lyrics!" argument applies to this single at all considering it's barely catchy and mostly totally unpleasant to listen to (and sean garrett is involved, who woulda thunk?!) -- that argument applies to, say, "every girl"
― hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'll concede to having missed the point... INDEX FINGER
― Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 07:29 (fifteen years ago)
"massive attack" is way more pleasant to listen to than "every girl" (and i like "every girl" fine) - it could use a touch less garrett vocals, but it's no more a mess than "i'm that chick" or "bird flu" or any number of stop-start drum-heavy tracks. and coming up with something like this is a huge relief considering it could've been something like "spotlight".
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 09:43 (fifteen years ago)
'Bird Flu' felt so much more natural than this, which feels clumsy and half-formed.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not sure if i LIKE this record yet, but i was kind of expecting some kind of generic cash moneyish thing probably about sex: the fact that it's weird and massive-drummed and abrasive and aggressive are all making it !!! to me. also: sounds really terrible on PC speakers, massive on headphones, i only wish i led a life that would involve hearing it on a massive soundsystem somewhere this week
― thomp, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)
also the 'mango' line is followed by an off-mic voice going "mango?" as if to be, like, really? i kind of lol'd at this
― thomp, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)
well, the video is somehow more messy & half-realized than the song is
http://videos.onsmash.com/v/qsexlwwAJJZjNLqe
the bridge on this joint is pretty good -- i kinda wish they had used that beat for the beat and nicki singing as the chorus
― hipster puddy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)
ok, kinda great...like the goofed-out kid version of "Hard" or something. Did she just say it wouldn't be "proper" to shoot someone with a rocket launcher? a+
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 1 April 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)
"the bridge on this joint is pretty good -- i kinda wish they had used that beat for the beat and nicki singing as the chorus"
yes exactly. she has such a good voice and so much to offer in this direction (that's largely gone unexplored)--it's kinda baffling they didn't have her singing a hook. like where was drake when they were recording this? maybe that'll be the next single in the pipeline though.
also lex ur crazy. no way in the world this is "pleasant" to listen to, in any sense of the word. interesting, mayyyyybe.
but yeah this mostly sucks. i'd rather listen to the last 45 seconds or whatever looped for 3 minutes than the song itself.
― Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 1 April 2010 03:53 (fifteen years ago)
the stop-start clunkiness of the song is exacerbated by the radio edit too
― 2 guys 1 jag (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 1 April 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)
the radio edit is o_0 - you can't say "jumbo" any more??
still disagree it's a mess, the stop-start beat and the weird explosions and shots and shit going off everywhere really suit the song. it's meant to be disorientating!
i really like the video too (and how is that confused...it's just situating minaj's pink-wigged barbie steez in middle east/jungle settings) - makes it totally clear that her angle is less "rap gaga" as "new missy". i don't find her humour any more senseless than some of missy's lyrics tbh.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 1 April 2010 09:13 (fifteen years ago)

tbh her schtick comes across to me way better when the whole song/video/style is all hers and she's not just grafting it onto some generic Yo Gotti or Mariah song. i don't know if i like it per se, but i respect that that's her single instead of something more like what she's been featured on.

otm
― k$h (The Reverend), Friday, 2 April 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
see i think whatever momentum she's developed has been exactly because she's been this ludicrous force of nature affectation that's been popping up everywhere and bouncing off everything stealing scenes, so the solo cut respect aspect imo bears little meaning if it only turns out to be a mistranslation - obviously i'm leaning more on the video than the song now - of that antic appeal. (ie her guest slots are more "all her" than this video is basically.)
― r|t|c, Friday, 2 April 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)
actually it's not just the video, the song itself is pretty aimless anyway. but then otoh i'm not sure what an accurate minaj solo song would even be like tbh.

I kinda feel like right now Nicki, as far as her visual aesthetic goes, is kind of at the level of those first Gaga videos, where she has all these crazy ideas and doesn't have the budget to pull them off without it looking cheap and tacky.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 3 April 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
did "Just Dance" have any crazy ideas? i thoguht it was just generic party video with hey there's a lightening bolt on my cheek lol
Nicki's video budget now is about as big as it'll ever get probably, don't think money's holding her back
― fuckshitpop (some dude), Saturday, 3 April 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
I say what's wrong with cheap and tacky if it is all in good fun. Most female rappers (as talented as they all are) have to take themselves so serious because of anal rap fans who wish rap music was stuck in 1994 or have to sex it up for those same rap fans to call them sluts and hos.
I love Nicki because she as close to Missy as we are going to get now. I mean yeah I wish someone like Jean Grae would be equally as popular as Nicki to balance things out but it seems like the US can only take one big female rap star at a time.
Plus Massive Attack rocks due to the fact that Nicki is trying something new on her first official single.
― lilsoulbrother, Monday, 5 April 2010 02:30 (fifteen years ago)
i dont think the quota for female rap stars is really whats keeping jean grae from mass appeal
― The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Monday, 5 April 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)
Well yeah duh I know that. There are multiple factors to that but still in a perfect world Jean Grae should be as popular as Nicki so in order to have different female perspectives in hip hop. But since hip hop fans generally don't like females in general it's hard for either type of female rappers to have full acceptance.

thing about nikki is theres a bunch of things about her that u mention that make me want to give a shit -- like, im rooting for her, objectively -- but aesthetically the music really isnt doing it for me. i dont like the rap shes taking cues from as it is -- havent been feeling lil wayne tracks for a couple years
― The BoyBoy Big HOO$ (deej), Monday, 5 April 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)
yeah one on hand i think it was good for her to get out of nyc rap circles, but on the other hand i agree that being around wayne/young money has been a detriment to her as a rapper qua rapper (as a potential pop star or personality or w/e might be a different story) -- like, i'm not sure if i'll ever like a nicki verse more than her one on drought 3
― jihad mane (J0rdan S.), Monday, 5 April 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)
Well no one said you had to love Nicki to not be sympathetic to the rock and the hard place female rappers go through. Or a matter of fact black female artists go through as a whole. I think between this and Erykah Badu's Window Seat Video I'm finding it increasingly annoying how a black women need to limit themselves to be acceptable. If you stray artistically a little bit you get lambasted for it. Or in Nicki's and Erykah's case a long mile and you really hear the complaining. I say whether you like them or not, it should be encouraged that they take these risks even if they fail.
I totally disagree with this statement. I felt like if Nicki stayed in NYC her name wouldn't get out of the city. NYC hip hop isn't as dominant as it once was so how could she be a potential pop star with a region that has long been declining in popularity. Also who knows whether the Young Money style would last another year. I frankly don't care because I'm enjoying it right now. I think its comical, fun, and the crew seems to be having fun with it. If it wasn't for Young Money I wouldn't be listen to hip hop again honestly. After my "back packer" phase and having to suffer through the 50 Cent's domination, I needed something ridiculous to pull me back in. However, I do think Nicki has potential to break out of the Young Money mold, just her timing has to be right. But time will tell for that.
― lilsoulbrother, Monday, 5 April 2010 03:31 (fifteen years ago)

but then otoh i'm not sure what an accurate minaj solo song would even be like tbh.
this is kinda key! i disagree that she's just a "force of affectation"; obv it's hard to separate her image from her on-record presence but the latter is a lot more varied than you're all crediting her for - i find her pretty chameleonic, her persona's taken a lot of twists and turns over the past year, and it's increasingly obvious that this flux is intentional, and she's going to keep on doing it. i found "massive attack" kinda surprising actually - both more weird (disorientating beat where one could've maybe expected autotune barf) and less weird (no trace of cutesiness, "wacky" voices kept to a minimum) than i'd been anticipating. and we already know she can pull off weird dubstep beats ("saxon") and dancehall queen vibes ("beam me up scotty'). right now i literally have no idea where she plans on going from here, and that makes her career really compelling to follow. she has a real sense of event, too - sometimes you get a bit sick of these amazing gucci mane verses and tracks just dribbling out on to the internet.
in terms of the visuals the "massive attack" video is a pretty obvious continuation of the brash, bewigged image she's been pushing more and more, right? don't think she looks any more out of place in it than she ever has done. i'm really enjoying it actually - it's striking, imaginative, kinda unprecedented in (female) hip-hop, missy apart (and she was always a huge unreplicable exception). actually nicki generally is pretty unprecedented.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 5 April 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)
and i'll just say again - i'm lukewarm-to-cold on the records she gets the most criticism for ("lil freak", "up out my face", "bedrock"), but in the same timeframe she's also done really stellar guest spots on cassie's "fuck u silly", mya's "ponytail", lloyd's "take it off"...
went back to her "feel free" remix yesterday, that one's such an all-timer for me!

the two tracks that keep springing to mind for me are usher's "lil freak" and omarion's "i get it in". the former, cuz it's like a less try-hard, desperate take on it. the latter, cuz it comes off at first at being completely generic, but that actually allows for a lot more compelling odd touches, like mmts's backing vox for one, and most obviously in the way that backdrop allows weird character rappers like gucci and nicki to be really playful.

bottoms up and monster both feel like steps in the right direction to mei just really need this girl to get like 20% more substance and i dunno maybe the same amount of style?I was watching a BET tv-doc about female rappers and Nikki D basically said all props to nicki for being a success but she isn't saying much of anything and that's kind of where I'm still at.
― Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 September 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago)
i have no idea what forks is talking about
anyway this is a bit rich coming from a magazine that laps up the jizz of people like kaws, but it's still a nice gesture & a pretty cover

― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 September 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago)
Jordan, u seriously don't follow me? I like Nicki's style and she's got nice flow but her raps are fucking lamentable, she hasn't seemed capable of a live performance onstage (she's been dubbed in the five or six appearances I've seen televised) and while recent singles suggest she's fucking about in a direction that's more pleasing to me she's still lyrically garbage
― Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 September 2010 22:42 (fourteen years ago)
idk man
the whole "she's not saying anything" argument doesn't mean much to me -- she raps about flossing & i think she can do it pretty well -- she can flow like a motherfucker, my problem is that i just can't get past the robin williams thing
― J0rdan S., Monday, 20 September 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago)
she IS pretty hairy
― Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 September 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago)
for nicki style is substance
― /\/K/\/\, Monday, 20 September 2010 23:03 (fourteen years ago)
then again, some might say her schtick is pretty played out, particularly when done in this pseudo-ironic, tongue-in-cheek style
― /\/K/\/\, Monday, 20 September 2010 23:04 (fourteen years ago)
a+ cover
wtf does "she isn't saying much of anything" even mean?! she isn't being deep'n'meaningful? she has a limited set of themes? i mean hell0 welcome to most rappers we love. how precisely are you defining "content" here?
her raps are fucking lamentable
this though is just flat-out wrong, and has never actually been right. she has a couple of horrible singles and a few blah guest spots in the debit column but a whooooole load of greatness on the other side. wtf do you even mean here? give me an example of how her lyrics or whatever it is you're referring to is lamentable. not "your love" or "check it out" which everyone hates.
for me, she had to win me over style-wise. the voices, the barbie schtick, the cartoonish shit - i'm on board with it for the most part now, but it was her raps that made me a fan in the first place.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:13 (fourteen years ago)
i'm defining content as storytelling/making a decent metaphor/doing anything more than stringing together a series of barely related words just because they happen to rhyme and fit the syllable count
just looked over thread and most of the lyrics you're calling exemplary (say the "keys to the benz" bit on bottoms up) are exactly what i'd cite as garbage, so I just think we're gonna have to agree to disagree... though i'm amused that you're all like WTF GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE (except for these horrible songs)
― Muscus ex Craneo Humano (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:30 (fourteen years ago)
she does this and always has done, idk what nicki songs you've been listening to but i can prob guess the ones you haven't
my favourite nicki lyrics are probably either "itty bitty piggy" or "keys under palm trees"
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:45 (fourteen years ago)
the first time I paid attention to her was when she gets to that "rim rim rim" line in Bottoms Up. I don't have a problem with her. complaining about her "content" in the context of modern pop is sorta um waht? I agree with lex on that point
― Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

― i feed these skreets (tpp), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:55 (fourteen years ago)
i listened to beam me up scotty about twice and then put it away so yeah, neither of those songs made much impact on me. I've probably heard ten or eleven singles and guest spots above and beyond that.

― i feed these skreets (tpp), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

i honestly don't understand the voices thing -- it's like different for the sake of being different -- it's like digging asher roth raps about going to penn state
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:14 (fourteen years ago)
it's funny!
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:15 (fourteen years ago)
or like the seligh bells blown out speaker annihilation aesthetic -- i don't see what it adds to the music at all -- it's distracting & fucks up what is obv real talent
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago)
right but it's funny like the rest of young money are clowns funny
the voices appeal to me because they're funny and liven up her delivery. it's all about energy and persona for me... she'd still be a good emcee without them and a lot her stuff before she started using all the voices is actuallly my fave material of hers, but yeah I don't find them to be an obstacle or anything, they're entertaining - don't get the asher comparison it's not like she's the first rapper to use funny voices/rap in a comical persona or something
― synth pattern boldness (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
the rest of young money is just boring, I'm laughing AT them moreso than anything else
fucks up what is obv real talent
yeah this is maybe true. i dunno the other young money people are just obviously wack to anyone rap nerd or not. i know loads of ppl who don't give a shit about rap who are suddenly talking about nicki. don't expect to hear them telling me how much they lock mack maine or whoever in this eternity xp
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:19 (fourteen years ago)
i can't remember the last rapper (esp a pop rapper of her stature) to rap in literally 10+ different voices in one song
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago)
well yeah obv she takes it to another level (which is part of her appeal - the wackiness, WHICH VOICE WILL SHE USE NEXT OMG)
― synth pattern boldness (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:21 (fourteen years ago)
honestly i think it's dope when she dips into the voices thing sometimes, but it's really overkill -- it's like dabbling in some fetish porn or something & all of a sudden your watching some chick dressed like little red riding hood drinking the piss of a fox
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:24 (fourteen years ago)
she's like playing dress-up with every new voice and persona (she makes distinctions between Nicki the Ninja, Roman Zolanski, etc.) - she's just a genuinely fun and entertaining figure who has obvious technical talent, if she didn't use the voices she'd still be good but they set her a part - I guess whether that's in a good or bad way is up to you
― synth pattern boldness (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 21 September 2010 00:25 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i mean it's quite clear she's trying to carve a niche out for herlef that isn't just like smut rap or whatever. whether that's the best route for her i dunno but she's doing pretty good imo

I like to think of myself as a Young Money-ologist so I'll field this one.
She no longer goes by Nicki Lewinski (she felt it was inappropriate after she garnered so many young fans) but she used to because she felt Monica Lewinsky could have been very powerful if she had been smarter. Monica Lewinsky could have exploited her close relationship with the President and made things happen for herself.

First listen: this song is awesome, best thing she's put out in the last year. Nice to see some different voice-pastiches getting thrown into her Batman toolbelt here - particularly, I don't think I've heard the thing she does around 1:55 forward. It feels (to me) like she's verging into a wide set of real-life character impressions, like part of that could be Any Girl's Mom, and then the part that's Any Girl Practicing R&B Singing In Front Of The Mirror...I dunno. There's potential there.
I wish she would drop the candy-colored wig thing for just a little while - I love the look but I'm kind of into her dialing it down as this flattened-makeup, no-eyebrows thing she's doing in parts of this.

i like "hiss" a lot in general. annoying but typical that it's being reported as a diss track when it's pretty much meg's repudiation of all the heinous vitriol she received during the whole shooting/trial saga, the handful of lines suggesting specific 'critics' aside. of course mrs. goofy's embarrassing/pathetic behavior has now made it a 'nicki minaj diss' in the public eye but oh well, what probably would have just been a strong statement track (like previous single "cobra") is now on its way to becoming an actual hit from the looks of it
