still not sure exactly how the correction system works - i've made several which seem to have had 0 impact on anything - but last.fm keeps autocorrecting the uk funky producer(s) delerious to a christian rock band called delirious ;_;

if everyone could vote for delerious as correct that might stop it doing this and would be wonderful. i don't want fucking christian rock bands on my profile.

Another Very High! This is kind of unexpected as last time I looked at my neighbours they were all Medium.

My top two artists are more the result of me having a major fad of listening to nothing but them and then not listening to them for ages than them being my favourite music ever, but still, the Gasman is a Planet Mu electronic dude closer to the label's old IDM than its new dubstep styles, and Deep Turtle are a bunch of hyperactive Finnish dudes who were maybe a little bit Cardiacs and a little bit Mr Bungle.

It's strange how things have changed though - used to be (pre-Internet) MTV and The Box and VH1 or whatever only showed cut versions of rap songs so if you wanted to hear Snoop swear you'd have to buy the record. Now just about everything you find on video sites & spotify is uncensored and uncut and you have to go out of your way to find clean radio edits.

onimo I love that all of your library photos are in black and white.

Well most of them are from the olden days :)

When I was nine I think I mostly listened to my Dad's Blondie and Who records plus a load of John Lennon (he was killed that year and his songs were everywhere). Madness were just starting to take over the playgrounds - we ended up huge gangs of mini-nutty boys wandering around. Bad Manners were just as popular for a while.

The Great Rock and Roll Swindle came out round about then as well and led to a wee Pistols revival that my Dad wouldn't let me join in :)

Have any of you had issues with scrobbling from an iPod? On my old computer I had no problem scrobbling tracks from my iPod, but since switching to my new MacBook Pro it actually scrobbles about one out of every 12-15 tries. Reading the forums I see that many, many, many people have had (or are having) the same problem. I've tried every solution I've come across in the forums, but absolutely nothing has worked. Kind of annoying that I can't track the plays on my iPod like I used to be able to do. If it matters, I do manually manage my iPod because my iTunes library is much much larger than my iPod. Every time I go into 'Diagnostics' on the client, it is switched back to "iTunes Automatically Manages" no matter how many times I change it. If I try to force a scrobble, it just says there are no tracks to scrobble - which obviously isn't true.

Enough rambling. Any of you had any success at getting this to work?

How Underground/Mainstream are you?

http://crosbow.peterpedia.org/lastfm

Weekly top artists
You are 86.9% underground.

You are 1% mainstream.

Overall top artists
You are 74.7% underground.

You are 3% mainstream.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 8 March 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

I went from about 80% underground to 0% this week by listening to White Stripes the new Gorillaz album.

overall
You are 0% underground.
You are 22% mainstream.

dunno how many fans a band needs to be considered mainstream but I don't think many of my top lol80s goths would traditionally fall into that category

Puzzling inconsequential thing: the last.fm compatibility thing rates me "very low" with a friend I swap music recommendations with, which I guess is only slightly improbable, but we have two Top 15 artists in common and it's not even listing any music we have in common

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 13 March 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Your musical compatibility with xxxxxyyyyyzzzz is High

Music you have in common includes Ayatollah and Leo Sayer."

haha okay, based off of me playing Spiritualized right now that underground thing for recent tracks currently says:

You are 42.4% underground.
You are 5% mainstream.

Meanwhile, for total artists:

You are 0% underground.
You are 27% mainstream.

Wonder what happened to the other 73%...

Apparently only 5 of the bands I've listened to over the past 6 months are sufficiently metal to have a logo. This is not surprising, but the fact that Black Moth Super Rainbow is one of them may be:
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/6689/bandlogostiledsinkv.jpg

And I don't even know what the logo between BoC and Unwound on my overall is... it's a, uh, skull-flower, so I thought maybe it would be Skullflower, but I'm not aware of them using anything similar:
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/3483/bandlogostiledsink.jpg

(ps scott's suggestion to listen to Killdozer radio on the pigfuck thread = A+)

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 26 March 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

That logo thing may have started off as a metal thing, i dunno, but it seems to cover all sorts of stuff. You can add logos to it I think, so i assume users are doing so all the time and adding to its database.

http://fxdteam.com/lastcloud/i.php?i=trailofgybe-_-7day-_-red-_-

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 26 March 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

Heh, I didn't really mean that the Smiths or the Magnetic Fields were metal. But anything that reduces 6 months of my corny indie listening to Voivod and Godflesh probably does skew kinda metal...

(though I was just considering adding them for a bunch of bands but drew a blank on a definitive logo because they have different typography on every album, so I concede it's not easy for most bands)

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 26 March 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

sofatruck, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

How do they compute compatibility?
Mine seems to change daily with some people. Like with onimo for instance, one day its very high next day its low then its high then medium and so on. Is it now all based on recent plays rather than overall chart? Also it used to show different results for when the other person visited you but now its the same.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if it had gone recent-only, given how I've looked at various profiles (including people I used to be highly compatible with) who have some bands in common with me in their top 15 artists, and the compatibility meter comes up with "very low" and doesn't even list any bands

shame if it has, though

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i've had the "very low" thing and no bands listed even when we share a top 20 artist o_0

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, the first time I saw that I listened to the band my friend had just been listening to (had never heard of them, wanted to check out where dude was at now he was apparently 100% last.fm incompatible with me), and after listening to 2 tracks the compat-o-meter leapt up to "Medium" and only listed that band! So definitely some over-weighting of recent stuff at the very least.

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 7 April 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

They mostly grayed out the "Play" buttons and darkened some others. Also, you can never tell what OS somebody is using anymore, just what program (iTunes/Winamp/Foobar). Nothing drastic.

i've been having computer issues for the past week - got the hard drive replaced, reinstalled last.fm, and suddenly it won't scrobble my ipod. no error messages, it just won't scrobble anything, and i can't even force it with the diagnostic tool thing. which sucks! so many plays while i was laptopless unscrobbled.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 23 May 2010 08:32 (fifteen years ago)

Sometimes the last.fm client only scrobbles my iPod the *second* time I plug it in; it saves those scrobbles in some kind of buffer I guess, but doesn't actually send them. Also lately I've had to have the last.fm client open, instead of just in the background, in order for it to scrobble. I say this in hopes your issues are something relatively minor like this.

Euler, Sunday, 23 May 2010 08:35 (fifteen years ago)

done!

maybe it's already hidden in the topic somewhere, but I've been having fun lately with the Scrobbling Timeline: http://playground.last.fm/demo/timeline - the cumulative option being especially nice. The friend comparison bit is excellent for saddo hipster "I liked them first" debates. (Dunno why it only has limited dropdowns for artists and comparisons, but you can fiddle with the sharing link it gives you to go beyond those.)

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

@lex: I have a Christian name one letter off from a somewhat famous musician which gets autocorrected to his name. ARGH

i think it's your top artists + the only available friends to compare to are those who've also played that artist - which is nice to know in itself!

I use the calendar function more than anything else. I often add gigs and I sign up for ones that others have added. It's a very useful at-a-glance guide to what's coming up in my city.

I like to look at the charts of my near neighbours (people who have a close match with my listening habits) and picking out artists they like that I haven't heard.
I find the related artists thing much more useful than similar things on e.g. spotify or pandora as it seems to branch off more rather than just have a group of 7-10 artists all listed under each other.

embrace the flopping? no thanks (onimo), Friday, 23 July 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

'loved tracks' is one of the more valuable features for me, mostly as a bookmark for great new- to-me tracks and occasionally to register new enthusiasm for a familiar track. as more listening is coming from external (last, pandora, rhapsody etc) its a great reference.
but I can't say looking at what Friends listen to is particularly enlightening.
its more about listening to friends/neighbor's stations than digging through charts, theyre usually less cohesive than the artist stations which can be good or bad depending on your mood. could have used the upcoming features when i went to more shows, glad its there for when i do.

I especially hate the ones who click on everyone who subscribes ,then the subscriber visits their page to see who it is, then that person replies back with a bunch of spam and the line "thanks for visiting my page". Some stupid trustafarian jam band guy was notorious for doing it.

Mormons come out of the sky and they stand there (Abbbottt), Monday, 20 September 2010 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

ilx_onimo's super-eclectic score is

752/1000

what could it mean????

pissky in the jar (onimo), Monday, 20 September 2010 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

tiledsink's super-eclectic score is
771/1000

"The most similar artists for my profile are The Fall (5), Labradford (5), Squarepusher (5), Blamstrain (4), Belong (4), Flying Saucer Attack (4), Ilkae (4), Wire (4), This Heat (4), Pere Ubu (4)", apparently

I was going to say that I liked the word "super-eclectic" as it has simultaneously put both a Belly song and a Stereolab song in my head, but I guess neither of those are eclectic, so, eh

patapon pataphysics (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 20 September 2010 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

prince is actually probably #2 or #3, if you factor in "Prince & the Revolution" plays as well

Someone asked if it was possible to have the little red bar 100% full – looks like it is with me and this random guy who asked for a friend req*

I have a couple people, but I guess it's not very hard to have top rankings belong to My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, Kate Bush, Pavement, Boards of Canada.... all very stock indie bandz (but obviously worthy of repeat listens!)

while i'm here, i'm having a really weird last.fm issue atm.

yesterday i played this track for the first time: http://www.last.fm/music/Buju+Banton/_/Murder+(feat.+Wayne+Wonder)

nothing unusual about any of the tags. it showed up in "recently listened tracks" on my front page - but didn't move to /tracks, didn't show up in my charts or library (eg it should be listed here - http://www.last.fm/user/lexpretend/library/music/buju+banton - but isn't). manually adding it to my library hasn't worked. i'm not having this issue with any other track (and don't think i've had it before). wtffff?
