i thought the void records search party reissue was legit. oh well.
also interesting stuff on guerssen, though i'm not sure if these came out earlier on vinyl and the CDs are just coming out now - Schibbinz (cool, mellow garage folk-rock) and William Nowik "Pan Symphony in E Minor" (supposedly proggy/psychy super rarity, samples sound good).
and isolation ward anthology on LTM! samples of that sound pretty awesome too, dark postpunk with female vocals.

Oh wow, I never heard Raymilland before. Totally buying that.
saw this in other music's update, with typically bullshit review:
THE BEAUTIFUL LOSERS Nobody Knows the Heaven (Lion Productions)
label says:
To set the scene: it’s 1974, it’s Paris, two young guys in their bed-sit (one of whom is French music maven/famous producer Jay Alanski) are dreaming of counter-culture, and their internal versions of California and New York. The result is this album, a child begotten of Marc Bolan, Baudelaire, and Lautréamont; a fascinating record, subtle and engaging as it is scarce; the re-creation of a parallel pop universe which one Michael Moorcock wouldn’t have renounced. Somehow, the duo get their record out into the world on Monde Melody’s one-off "Silk" imprint (a tribute to Marc Bolan). And what twisted songs (in English) they managed to squeeze into a fifty-minute slab of vinyl. The music drips with deep nostalgia for the decadent "beautiful people" who lived and breathed and then found a home in the songs of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, pervaded throughout with a kind of psychedelic sadness. All of this is expressed by means of long jagged acid guitar runs (or in acoustic strums) supported by Moroccan percussion (bongos?) and heavy bass lines from Christophe J. A post-quaalude album, as band leader Jay Alanski has said. If the LP had been released in 1971, everyone would point to T-Rex as an influence, and call it "glam folk"; fast forward to today and it’s hard not to think "loner," and draw comparisons with the music of Devendra Banhart, albeit recorded 35 years ago! We’re now several decades further on in the world’s slow self-destruction, but this sole recording by the Beautiful Losers has lost nothing of its freshness and superb arrogance. Blessed be the listener who is going to discover such a hidden treasure!

still might enjoy that grong grong reissue best this year though. so great. and the dvd with that is just completely amazing. just the fact that a band not around that long would amass so much footage in 1983 and 1984...and its all so awesome too!

It came out in '09, but I'm not sure it was mentioned in the other thread — Universal finally did a Jorge Ben box, Salve Jorge!, with all of his Philips albums ('63-'75) and two discs of rarities. It's really expensive and based on what I've heard the mastering seems kinda squashed. A pity.

This was mentioned in passing on some other thread but figured I'd post here as it's really blown me away. Like an alternate history if Cabaret Voltaire, the Human League, Soft Cell and others had never hit the big time in the '80s, and were instead doomed to record on four-tracks and release their classics unheard. Or at least that's how I romanticize it in my head...

hey dudes this is from the krautrockII-list:
Just to pass on the news that Groenland Records will release a 5-LP vinyl box set on 10 May, with the first three albums plus NEU! 86 (an updated version of NEU! 4 plus additional new tracks) and a maxi-single featuring an updated edited version of their live rehearsals.
The box includes a download code, so you'll get to listen to all this stuff on your morning commute.
A 36-page book includes NEU! photos from Anton Corbijn and Peter Lindbergh. A major new 2,500 word essay by Stephen Iliffe, plus tributes from other writers and musicians and rounding out the package: A Neu! T-shirt and a stencil of the Neu! logo.
― DISASTÜR ZÜN RHINE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 12 March 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
The updated version of Neu! 4 will be without what Rother calls "the commercial crap", but with newly found unreleased stuff.
Personally, I LOVE the commercial crap.

The Adventures In Modern Recording reissue mentioned upthread is recommended, if only for the 7 Trevor Horn demos at the end. The missing link between Yes and New Pop! Great to finally hear "We Can Fly From Here" on CD, nearly 30 years after the Drama tour. The demo of "Videotheque" is the real jewel though. There's also a hilarious comment re David van Day in the sleeve notes too.
― Jeff W, Monday, 15 March 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
That Buggles reissue sounds really interesting. I've never heard anything by them apart from the hit but I love a bit of 80's new pop. The reviews on Amazon make it sound really great and the artwork looks really cool.
Great to see The Dollar album finally get reissued too.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 15 March 2010 16:35 (sixteen years ago)
Cherry Pop, who are responsible for the Dollar reissues among others, have really done a great job of making a lot of lost 80s albums available again. I absolutely love "The Dollar Album" and had no idea they had actually made such a great full album, not only the occasional great single. This one and "Adventures In Modern Recording", which is also re-released this year, really show what a great year 1982 was for Trevor Horn (I mean, "Lexicon Of Love" for me being his absolute number one masterpiece)
Cherry Pop also reissued Hazell Dean's "Heart First" this week. And have also recently reissued Bomb The Bass' "Into The Dragon".
Their website at http://www.cherryred.co.uk/cherrypop/ is well worth following for those of us who love 80s pop (including subscribing the Facebook fansite too)

I'm, excuse the language, fucking wetting myself at the thought of that Neu! box set.
Found this Rother quote;"I was in the studio today editing one track and I've been transferring music from all the analog tapes to the computer. I also stumbled across some old NEU! music that I'd forgotten because Klaus and I split the tapes and he didn't have all the material in Düsseldorf when he released that version of NEU! 4. This is all quite interesting and another piece of work for the archivist."

Loving the Method Actors CD. I can't believe something this good flew under the radar for so long. Of course now I'm wondering if there was anything as good on the missing 8 tracks from their 17 track double album, Little Figures.

Glad you dig it. Have to say it was hard to chose, but we definitely felt like a single CD distillation of the singles and LP made more sense than multiple CDs. The selection decision was a back and forth between Vic and myself and I think we came up with something representative. Maybe we'll post the rest as freebies.

Yeah, worth the expense (picked it up at Portland's finest Exiled Records for $24). Possibly even better than the Chrissy Zebby Tembo release. For some reason, I think the Buzzcocks would've dug Zam-rock.

The Wicked Pickett! I was trying to find all his albums but stalled with the last few. This would solve my dilemma, hopefully I can sell the ones I have for a decent price.
The selection decision was a back and forth between Vic and myself and I think we came up with something representative. Maybe we'll post the rest as freebies.
Heck yeah! I'm sure plenty of people would appreciate that. Double albums were pretty rare around that time, at least for indie/post-punk. I'm surprised it didn't get more attention like Minutemen/Husker Du did a few years later. I guess The Suburbs didn't really make waves with Credit In Heaven.

Over in the mybloodyvalentine forums, guys are saying they spoke to Kevin Shields and that he had promised the reissues sometime around the end of this summer.

Cheap Trick - One On One (1982)/Next Position Please (1983) [Apr 6]Georgie Fame - Mod Classics 1964-66George Jackson - In Memphis 1972-77
King Crimson - Lizard (1970)This album originally suffered from a muddy mix, which Steve Wilson reportedly corrected in both stereo and 5.1. He also did In the Court... and Red with more coming for the 40th Anniversary reissues. I'm confused, as I've seen at least two other sets of reissues in the past few years. Lizard is the only one I hadn't gotten yet.

Just ordered "7" and "Absolutely" by Madness. "7" is my favourite Madness album, sort of the album where they balanced perfectly between the nuttiness and punkiness of the first two albums and the more sophisticated (but slightly overproduced) style of the rest of their albums.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 30 April 2010 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

It always bugged me
1) that "The Bottom Line" faded out on the "Gonna take you to part 2" so I cassetted it with the 12" version
2) that more people don't hear "Life is a rollercoaster" Ronan Keating and go "That's a total nick off the remix of e=MC2"

I saw the BAD at FYE, but had already ordered it from Deepdiscount for $6 less. Can't wait! I get flashbacks to listening to KUNI in 1985 with DJ Bob Dorr saying the words "Big Audio Dynamite" in his low, buttery voice.
Love the Madness reissues. I think Absolutely is arguably as good as 7. Finally got Squeeze - Argybargy 2CD in the mail last weekend. Tons of bonus cuts and a really nice live show that sounds great.

xpost Jam Science seems like one that's just never gonna come out. Some weird combo of rights hell and no one gives enough of a shit abt Shriekback. A shame, such an incredible record with some of the best processed-guitar sounds ever captured. All but two of its tracks have appeared on different compilations, and years ago (like 8 or 10 years ago) you could order a 'special band remaster' of it from the band's website, which I did. This was a CD-R with most of the tracks in fine sound except the two tracks which had never appeared on any CD, which were taken from vinyl sources (adequately but not excellently).
― International Harvester Of Eyes (Jon Lewis), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i plumped for this, along with their version of oil and gold, and a splendid 3 track cd-r of new material, one track which was then recorded by barrys son in the veils.
best option going really.

Jon Lewis OTM as usual re: Shriekback's "Jam Science". Of course, these days it's easy enough to find a rip if you're interested but I, too, would love a proper remaster. Pair it with "Care" while you're at it.
Meanwhile, Dream Syndicate's "Medicine Show" has a 6/21 release date according to AmazonUK.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 30 April 2010 17:00 (sixteen years ago)
wish i had ordered their 'remaster' of oil and gold in addition to JS, because I got one track from it off limewire and it did sound punchier than the Island CD. Last time I looked I couldn't find a way to order these sub rosa items from Shriek HQ anymore.

As mentioned before. Apparently this was scheduled for re-issue in 2006, but I'm pretty darn sure it has been released this year. Whether that is instead of or in addition to 2006, I'm not sure:
"Well, there's this 10-year old singer from Elma, Washington. He's really cool. His mom calls him Travisbut his real name is Human Skab. Picture this: the Skab zips around the living room shooting toy guns.He hits the family piano with his fists. He tries real hard to play guitar. He makes up songs about terrorismand radiation and throwing rocks at windows. Cool!" -- Bruce Pavitt, "Sub Pop" zine, 1987

mentioned above, but here are the details of that Medicine Show reissue:The 2010 version of "Medicine Show" ships on June 15
After a 20-year wait, the Dream Syndicate's 2nd album "Medicine Show" finally returns to CD and this new version is an update worthy of the wait.
The 2010 digipack version of the 1984 classic features a sparkling, powerful sound, mastered from the original tapes as well as an expanded booklet with revelatory liner notes by David Fricke never seen before photos from the archives of Laura Levine.
And if that wasn't enough, this new version includes the entire "This Is Not The New Dream Syndicate.....Live" -including the lengthy workout of "John Coltrane Stereo Blues" which didn't make the cut on the original 1991 reissue.
From Steve:
"I've made over 20 studio albums in the last quarter century and "Medicine Show" sounds unlike any of the others. Even though each of them occupies its own sonic space, they all follow some kind of logical trajectory. "Medicine Show" is the odd man out. Not only does it not remind me of any of MY other records, I can't even think of anything else that sounds quite like it. I still play most of the songs live on a regular basis but the record itself is beautiful, unattainable, right and wrong in all the best ways.
Karl wanted to make a big, panoramic rock record to justify our move to a major label and the plethora of attention we had received in the mere nine months that had passed since the release of "The Days of Wine and Roses." I wanted to make a "beautiful loser," button-pushing, over-the-top emotional catharsis in the tradition of most of my all-time favorite records (i.e.. "Big Star 3rd," Tonight's The Night," "Plastic Ono Band," etc.). We both got our way-- and in ways that neither of us could have predicted. I think it was this improbable collision of desires and personality that gives "Medicine Show" its character.
But the other part of the record's sound and mood is the time it took to make it. Try these numbers on for size:
The Days of Wine and Roses (recording, overdubs and mixing): 3 days, 8 hours a day
Medicine Show (recording, overdubs and mixing): 5-plus months, 7 days a week, 14 hours a day
Sandy Pearlman drove us to the limit and beyond, and you can hear the discipline, defiance, cracks-in-the-armor, mania, psychoses and the final graduation from all of the above in these tracks. I hear the laughs, the fights, the late nights, the booze, the Tenderloin, the Mission District, Sandy's ever-present baseball cap, the Clown Alley burger runs, late nights watching Dr. Gene Scott, the perilously high 24th- floor efficiency apartments at the Fox Plaza and every one of the days and days and nights and nights when I listen to this record. And I wouldn't change a thing.
It would all make a good book. And, in fact, it probably will someday."
― tylerw, Friday, 18 June 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)
kind of confusing -- it's a double disc? "This Is Not The New Dream Syndicate.....Live"?

though i dig this record, i always kind of wanted it to be better. i remember searching high and low for it for a while, and when I finally found it, was a little disappointed. maybe this re-ish will get me more into it ...

i got the outside world cd/dvd set in silver cardboard with cool remixes etc, and the normal cd of a secret wish
so there will be a lot of doubling up methinks, but for the 20 minute cassette versions alone, i'm stumping up the cash for this ..

So annoyed that Reckless doesn't have Medicine Show in yet. It's not like it's an import.
That Petrol Emotion albums were reissued nearly a decade ago and quickly went out of print. I'd been searching for copies for years, but they were just way to expensive.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 18 June 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)
Everybody really hated Medicine Show when it came out, didn't they? I'd liked the debut EP and LP, but remember that one being a real snooze -- like they were trying go heavy metal, but couldn't pull it off, with or without Pearlman theoretcially beefing up Precoda. Pretty sure Wynn's songs were just in one ear, out the other. Haven't heard it in a quarter century though; it's possible I'd think differently now.
"This Is Not The New Dream Syndicate.....Live"?
And ha, I remember this, too. Recorded on the Medicine Show tour, right? And even duller, iirc.
― xhuxk, Friday, 18 June 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
Last year I ripped all my Propaganda material and I gotta say - I don't think I need anymore remixes / alt versions!! The stuff on "Outside World" seems like all I need (though I have the 3" CD singles).
Now where's the deluxe reissue of Scritti's "Cupid & Psyche"? That was my summer record for 1985.

xp - My first impression was like a lot of people's, disappointment that Dream Syndicate didn't remain Velvet Underground acolytes and leading light of the Paisley Underground. However, it shouldn't have been THAT much of a surprise, given their close link to True West, who also evolved from VU worship to Television to Neil Young, and the whole Americana/roots movement in the 80s. Medicine Show grew on me and I've been wanting to hear it again ever since I lost my tape 20 years ago. I really don't think there's any metal element to it.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 18 June 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
I think I was 17 when Medicine Show came out and I was a huge fan of the band at the time, had the Enigma EP and the debut. I eagerly dove in to it, and it crushed me with mediocrity. Pretty sure I traded it in within a year or two. In retrospect I think Kendra Smith's absence was the real dealbreaker for me. But I saw Wynn recently and thought he was great, so maybe this would benefit from another listen. A remaster certainly couldn't hurt.

Win's "Freaky Trigger" is being reissued by Cherry Red soon as well, with what appears to be a ton of bonus tracks. For those who don't know, this was the second (and last) album by ex-Fire Engine Davy Henderson, who went on to Nectarine No 9 and more recently, Sexual Objects. There's a possibility that their forst album, "Uh, Tears Baby" will be reissued too. Neither has been on CD for more than about two decades, and it's glorious stuff.

Cherry Red (through its Esoteric Records label) will also reissue the first two Aphrodite's Child albums. Both excellent late 60s psych pop albums that deserve to be available again.
― Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 19 June 2010 10:41 (fifteen years ago)
Cherry Red will be sure to include pops, clicks, jumps, early fades and the occasional wrong speed track on all their reissues.

I asked Davy about doing the Win CDs when we put out the Fire Engines CD and he wasn't interested. At the time it seemed like he thought that entire experiment was a mistake. I tried to convince him it was totally awesome and people were loving those kinds of sounds. In any case, I didn't push it because the material was owned by larger labels and we try to avoid working with larger labels because it's usually a big hassle. I love Cherry Red, then and now, I just wish there stuff came out with a bit more hoopla and attention.
― dan selzer, Saturday, 19 June 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)
X-Post. I believe this varies from Cherry Red label to Cherry Red Label. My Cherry Pop CDs (and I have a number of them now) all sound excellent. However, I have a couple of John Miles reissues by Lemon Records that are simply just a not exactly new vinyl record has been recorded into CD.
This is not Cherry Red only btw. It can be obviously heard on the Edsel reissue of the first two Thompson Twins albums that they couldn't find the original tapes and had to do with recording vinyl records instead.

Finally got Medicine Show a couple days ago, and enjoyed it a lot -- all the songs came back to me. I'd say not quite the classic as Days of Wine and Roses, but maybe a minor classic. I hear some Gun Club influence, but the tunes are stickier than anything after Fire Of Love.

A-ha's Deluxe Edition of "Hunting High & Low" will finally be released next week, along with a Deluxe edition of IMO their best album, "Scoundrel Days".
The extra material on "Hunting High & Low" seems more interesting though, including the original version of "Take On Me", excellent non-album b-side "Driftwood" and a lot of other titles that I presume are from the aborted sessions with Tony Mansfield and John Ratcliffe.

They are surely being listed as forthcoming issues in the homepage of Platekompaniet, Norway's biggest record store chain. It may be Norway only, but that would seem odd with such a big international name as a-ha.

Released here today. Some of the unreleased songs from the pre-"Hunting High & Low" era are surprisingly good, even with "unfinished" production and all.
The "Scoundrel Days" extras are less interesting, but the album sounds magnificent. The intro to "October" is fantastic.

Lou Bond's Lou Bond on Light in the Attic. Originally on Stax imprint We Produce in 1974. Kind of a demented Memphis supper-club soul singer in a vaguely Al Green mode, with weird but sumptuous string/horn arrangements in back, with various degrees of stream-of-consciousness poetry and social commentary. Very strange and beautiful stuff, with covers of Jimmy Webb and the master stroke, Carly Simon's "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." Big Star's Third ain't got nothin' on it.

I had a bunch of credit from selling CDs, and used it on some reissues lately.
Catherine Wheel - Ferment. Among the six bonus tracks are Mission of Burma's "...Revolver" and Husker Du, "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely." Nice surprises.
A Flock Of Seagulls - Listen. Their second album from 1983. "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" and "(It's Not Me) Talking" were not as iconic as "I Ran," but overall it's surprising how they venture into chilly post-punk territory. Really pretty damn good!
R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction. The first R.E.M. album I bought, and still one of my favorites. The package is disappointing though, as the liner notes are limited to a skimpy entry from Peter Buck, nothing else. Huge folded up poster takes up much of the space in an awkwardly sized box. The Athen Demos are interesting, with unheard track "Throw Those Trolls Away," and early version of "Hyena" but not of lasting interest.
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)
TV21 - Snakes And Ladders Almost Complete: 1980-82. Features their 1981 album, A Thin Red Line and singles. The Jam mixed with Teardrop Explodes is pretty accurate, and I'm loving it more than I expected. I'm amazed I never heard raves about them before given my keen interest of 1979-83 post-punk. My favorite find of the year so far.

Yeah, it's a little frustrating that one of the few remaining reggae reissue labels is still putting out Scratch stuff instead of, say, a best-of Jazzbo Ujama digital stuff. I think if PS had waited to launch Maximum Pressure until later in the 00s it would have taken off. A sequel to Firehouse Revolution would also be appreciated.

I kept confusing them in my memory with The Rain Parade. I may have heard some during college, but not sure. Reviews of these albums are extremely dismissive in Allmusic and Trouser Press. The gist is, pretty, jangly music influenced by The Smiths and Aztec Camera, but lacking decent songs, hooks, personality. Anyone have a different take on that?

Bruce Springsteen - The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge of Town Story [3CD, 3Blu-ray] Nov 16
"Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble.” But the music that got left behind was substantial.
This extraordinary deluxe package comprises nearly six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. It comes with an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen on the album and never-before-seen photographs.
The Deluxe Package also features The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' a documentary directed by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978, including home rehearsals and studio sessions with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.
In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of Darkness on the Edge of Town in its entirety from Asbury Park. The special performance in Asbury Park was shot in HD without an audience and successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original album.
The Deluxe Package also includes Darkness on the Edge of Town, digitally remastered for the first time, as well as the 2 CD set The Promise: The Lost Sessions from Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The two discs contain a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became." Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Broken Hearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. The Promise is simply a great listening experience."

there are troubles with the China records era of the Art of Noise material.lost master tapes and suchlike, so the chances of proper re-releases of that stuff is somewhat unlikely.

Personally I think 2010 has been a really excellent year for the Cherry Red family. Not that they were bad before that either, but things really took off this year. Highlighs include "The Dollar Album" by Dollar, "Listen" by A Flock of Seagulls", Tony Banks' "A Curious Feeling", the first two albums by Five Star and a big part of Camel's back catalogue.

And gotta add Salvo's fine take on Madness' 80s catalogue as well.
