Is Burzum's a concept album about being lonely in jail?

Doran, Thursday, 7 January 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

I should add that I'm not going to believe that's the real artwork until I see it, in real life.

We're just getting the Cobra Starship over here - they have a song a-listed on Radio One apparently :/

Yeah, it's a bit too good to be true I guess.

a lot of the well staged/shot photo covers are really spoiled by the type. true of the (similar) Foals and Para One covers imo. a lot of the time the font is just too decorative (for the sake of it), others just needlessly big (for my taste).

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

it just reminds me of every abstract geometry/symmetry-based cover - all much of a muchness. i don't actually mind the whole 'looks like old pelican cover' thing itself tho.

there's no originality to be had from purely photographic covers. fine with that as long as it's a good photo.

tbh if something looks faded/aged in that way people will love it (now). applies to a fair bit of stuff on the graphic design threads where the execution and type actually seems again pretty poor. reasons for this are interesting tho.

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

pretty sure it's helvetica steve.

seriously though: fonts are one of those things that be used wrongly. like there is no artistic defence for a lot of the typography on this page. it's just amateurish. it's often the easiest thing to criticize about a bad design, which is why it keeps being mentioned on this thread. the same is not usually true of, e.g. the choice of photo.

caek, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

that can be used wrongly

caek, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

Well, photos are more subjectively bad or good. Typography is objectively bad or good in every instance. (And if you don't know better, it's your fault. Not the designer's.)

I guess my problem with the Ratatat cover is that the arrow of parrots is pointing away from the viewer. It would be better if the logo was front-and-center up at the top and the two rows of parrots were cascading down to join together as one.

I think the image is okay, but once again the title/lettering is killing it. Like, I really like the way the bionic parts are rendered and how the lips stick out over them, but the drippy letters and the brackets and everything just get in the way. I guess Xtina in 2010 doesn't have a recognizable enough face that you could just leave it as the face, but there's something underconfident about doing it this way.

Aping Gaga if anything, I think.

In fact, I think I put it in the great covers thread a few weeks ago.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

Really? I think the Age of Adz cover is just awful. Bad fonts, ugly colors, dull image, and bears no relation to the record inside.

As for Muse? Well, they're a taste-free zone as ever. But at least their aesthetic (or lack thereof) is utterly consistent.

ursaminorjim, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:34 (fifteen years ago)

So, those who like the Sufjan cover - what do you like about it?

ursaminorjim, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

I still haven't heard The Age of Adz. It would probably ruin things if I did.

Faux-aging is kind of gimmick, but this one's done really well. It actually looks like some kind of private press lp from 1971 from some dudes who worshipped Funkadelic and Arthur C. Clarke.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 10:37 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

I ain't that kind of player I just foul a lot (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

I think the Sufjan Stevens cover is otherwise okay, but the "3D" effects in the letters "ADS" look like they belong to a different aesthetic.

Was going to say, should I have heard of Mike Posner?

also simple isn't bad, who cares how long it took?

50.bison (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

i think the problem with the kings of leon is it looks like a band member threw it together: iphone photo + display typeface that is standard install on microsoft word for mac.

there is also the unpleasant clash that they've aged the image and border (looks like they've done this following a "50 top tips to age images in the gimp" and these days the effect is almost like sepiatoning a photo in its playedoutness, but it could be worse), but they've forgot to age the crisp, white type, so looks completely out of place, like sand in eyes/vagina.

sorry i mentioned fonts, dan.

caek, Monday, 4 October 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

hate The Soof but like the cover - looks like The Fall circa Cerebral Caustic or something

hate Wavves even more than The Soof but I love that cover - like Royal Trux without nuance or the slightest bit of sophistication or elegance

hate kings of leon but i dig that cover - looks like 70s private press

what's that one in the middle of all of these that looks like a bad Robt Williams painting?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 4 October 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

what's that one in the middle of all of these that looks like a bad Robt Williams painting?

of Montreal.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 October 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

caek was right about the Kings of Leon cover. I comprehend what they were going for, but the boring typeface choice and the way they neglected to age it in any way is all wrong. It could look like a private press '70s lp with a little more tinkering. That's what I was getting at with the "five minutes" thing.

It's like someone had the idea, went on flickr and found the first old-looking picture with palm trees in it, yellowed it, put some shading on a border and added text. BANG. Album cover ready.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 October 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

the fact they didn't age the type looks like a genuine mistake more than anything.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 October 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

another problem with the kings of leon cover is the main image has really terrible compression artifacts and noise (the border and text is fine so it's not a problem with the jpg on this thread). that's not an attempt at a private press aesthetic. that's what happens when you take design input from a band member with an iphone.

font is quaint gothic aka desdemona btw

On the Watt cover, which is mostly rendered awful by the use of Comic Sans: the cover of his last one is no better - a pretty photo of a sunset ruined by text set in Verdana. I know that's the font he's used on his Hootpage for the last million years, but it's NOT FOR PRINT.

I think comic sans is so universally reviled that the conscious usage of it as your album cover font is meant to be ironic and/or tongue in cheek. so A+++ mike watt, that is in fact an awesome album cover and fuiud.

i almost feel like the most offensive thing about the grey oceans cover is the black borders.

I actually think this is good.

While I'm disagreeing, Pitchfork's feature includes MGMT's album and I personally think it's one of the best covers of the year. I'd go as far as buying the vinyl version for a couple of dollats only to look at it regardless of how awful its inner contents are.

On the Fact list I'd disagree with the Gorillaz one, not precisely good but I like the diorama thing, the typography not so much.

Mmmm... wrote 'dollats' instead of 'dollars'. Google image search tells me this is a 'dollat':

lol this is on Phil Anselmo's label, who'da thought he'd have poor taste in sleeve art

NB this is quite possibly a really good sludgy metal record, based on the split they did a while back with Thou who have some of the best metal art in the game

I ignored this for the longest time because of the artwork. The artist does pretty cool stuff (http://www.christianoldham.com/3.html) I guess this one it's just not for me.

Ugh.

I kind of really like that Massive Attack cover? Same with the Jams Murphy.

Okay, so that's actually a big nautical chain she's lying on, but that's NOT what it looks like at first glance.

That is amazing. Her Loreal contract will no doubt be under review after this dirty protest.

Neil S, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

That Games cover actually intrigues me a bit, in that nearly all the flags I know there seem to be of notable disputed/defunct/potential-separatist entities (Northern Cyprus, Taiwan, Corsica, South Vietnam, the GDR, Kosovo, um the United Suvadive Republic)... except that there are regular Turkish, Mongolian and Czech* flags there as well.

*) OK I guess it can be seen as the flag of the defunct Czechoslovakia
