source: they're playing in the AB in Brussels in April. Announcement.

Contains: "Their tenth album will be released in March 2010. True to tradition, everyone is behaving superfluously secretive about it, right up until the very last minute."

StanM, Saturday, 9 January 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

Hooray! Haven't really cared for their last three but I think I will always be hopeful that they can make me love them again.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Saturday, 9 January 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

i doubt it

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Saturday, 9 January 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

'Quaristice' was superb, looking forward to this.

craigboney (Mister Craig), Saturday, 9 January 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

I am cipating this one.

Leee, Saturday, 9 January 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, I forgot Quaristice even existed. I kinda lost interest after Confield.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Saturday, 9 January 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

Untilted is a contender for my favorite Autechre album, period! I've loved almost every step of their career, but Quaristice felt a bit too..hmm..uneven to me. It was good, but I didn't care much for the leftovers feel of it. Untilted, though, is endlessly replayable and I for one don't really want them to 'go back' to any previous sound.

abcfsk, Saturday, 9 January 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

I expect they will continue to be great; looking forward to this!

Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 10 January 2010 06:13 (fifteen years ago)

I for one don't really want them to 'go back' to any previous sound.

Oh I don't want them to go back. I just hope they go in a direction that interests me again, whatever that might be.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Sunday, 10 January 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not casting aspersions on anyone in particular, but I know personally I didn't get into Untilted or Quaristice at first because I wasn't willing to invest any time in getting to know them. So they sounded like lame versions of Autechre songs I'd already heard. They're not. Quaristice is uneven, yeah, but both of those albums have killer killer tracks.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

In all seriousness, I recognize that some people can process stuff faster than I can. (One of the reasons I'm not a critic.) Just a personal report.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

I think that's a fair point. I definitely put a lot of unrewarded effort into Draft 7.30, perhaps that unfairly reflected onto how I dealt with Untilted. And a big problem with Quaristice was, double albums can be hard at the best of times, and what with the alternate versions LP and EPs - it was just too much! I should go back and reconsider. I probably say that on all ae threads...

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Sunday, 10 January 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

x-post

yeah, draft 7.30 sucks.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

I like Quaristice a lot.

twice boiled cabbage is death, Sunday, 10 January 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

Both Untilted and Draft 7.30 is really funky, playful albums, to a much larger degree than any of their other stuff. Autechre jamming.

abcfsk, Sunday, 10 January 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

are*** (started out with just 'Draft 7.30 is..')

abcfsk, Sunday, 10 January 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

Sigh.

StanM, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

so anyway i've preordered already.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

just received an email from warp:

http://bleep.com/index.php?page=release_details&releaseid=23072

Autechre (Warp)

Autechre will release their new album ‘Oversteps’ on March 22nd on Warp Records.

The album will be available on CD, and deluxe vinyl edition - both including a free super high quality download version.

Made in The Designers Republic.

(THIS ITEM WILL BE SHIPPED FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 22ND)

djmartian, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

Are 24 bit wav files the SACD of the online world?

Interesting to see the ressurrected TDR doing graphic design duties, but it looks kind of boring and a definite departure from the previous style.

mh, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

look how quickly the info spreads on twitter, from the warp email going out on 12:47, and then gets cascaded via re-tweets

fucking dope, would buy

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Thursday, 14 January 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

I just heard a rumor that one of the guys in Autechre is autistic and makes all the raw material, and the other guy just edits it into something presentable. autistic + tech = Autechre?

p@@@nts, Monday, 22 February 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

I heard that half of Autechre is an automobile and the other half is a man who edits automobile noises into musical structures

mh, Monday, 22 February 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

I heard that one of the guys is australian and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

anyway, it's all previewable on bleep

and a little bird tells me that those that pre-ordered it from them can now download their digital copies.

koogs, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

this is really great though i'd say that about nearly anything they release

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

At the risk of jumping the gun... a few tracks in and this is really sounding like the ever-anticipated or feared but never expected "return". pt2ph8 is well Amber.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

nice, special offer on their back catalogue as well: http://bleep.com/index.php?page=artist_details&artistid=71

StanM, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

xp I think that's definitely what they *wanted* it to be, but I'm not sure how successful it is. There's not much substance to a lot of it and it remains quite vapidly pretty throughout.

"Know(1)" is definitely the highlight for me.

Turangalila, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

Meh, I'd love to preorder a physical copy, but I've had some shipping issues from the bleep store lately. I had an order that I made around Jan 1 that never arrived, and they shipped it again around the end of January and I still haven't seen it.

Gripes aside, those audio samples sound great.

mh, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

chimes all the way through this thing.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah so i did jump the gun; still trying to tease some feelings out of this but overall it feels much more like late period ae - less choons, more sound design/'tone poems'. but not as epic as confield.

also, via warp: "12-hour Radio Broadcast from Autechre.ws Tuesday 2nd March: 6PM - 6AM GMT. This will be epic."

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

This sounds nothing like late period ae.. it's a total change from the last four albums, and definitely ALL about choons.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone listening to the radio show? Streaming here: http://autechre.ws/

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

ehh. i'm gonna try and detect some tunes on the album instead.

do you see anything below the radio widget tho? I get:

thanks for posting the radio show, this is great.

oversteps hasn't really clicked with me yet, and i'm def no hater of later ae (confield on i suppose), but hearing them play this kind of stuff really makes me wish they'd give some danceable beats a shot again one of these days. been rockin that old lego feet thing lately and there's some fuckin jams on there.

i'm gonna try and detect some tunes on the album instead.

How about "known1"? The tune seems pretty hard to miss there.

This doesn't even sound like the same band that did the last few albums to me but I quite like it all the same. Very pleasant.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

anyone managed to download the whole stream via the torrent link that i posted up thread? opened up what i have so far on a wave editor and seems to be full of many, intermittent silences where the stream was buffering.... guess, i'll have to edit them out and hope the stitching still holds it all together

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Wednesday, 3 March 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

ah yes, if you copy the _Underscore pattern of part1 for the other 3 parts the extraction will work. if you're using Unrarx, just copy the file name on the error message. It will tell you what file name it expects.

Did anyone manage to capture the actual stream itself? Is that possible? Or are things like this usually just recorded to a giant WAV and recompressed?

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I recorded the last 5 hours as 4GB WAV! couple of points where the stream dropped off but to my surprise (I'd gone to sleep ) when opened up in an editor, after silences removed and audio being stitched together, there's nothing missing - so guess there's a buffer built into the streams.

I don't know enough about what quality the actual stream was transmitted at, but at least I can covert the WAV into a decent bitrate 320 kbps MP3.

I'm putting my own recording up when I reach these segments. The ones up so far should be downloading to give you 224kbps MP3s.

their track on the earth remix album basically sounds like a cover too

original bgm, Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

so this came out properly on monday. i downloaded it from bleep. so far it's pretty rad. reminds me of LP5, but maybe less "gimmicky". by gimmicky, i mean there's less to differentiate the different tracks, e.g. on LP5 there was the one that sped up and slowed down within a bar (fold4,wrap5), the one that sounded like someone turning the volume up and down (vose in), the one with no beat-just melody (melve), the really pretty one (rae), the one with the string quartet (arch carrier) etc. on oversteps the tracks kind of blend into one, but maybe that's because i've only recently heard it. it's going to be fun properly exploring it.

dog latin, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

That's promising, LP5 is my favourite Autechre. I'm sure I'll end up buying this - I like Quaristice a lot ("fun to explore" fits that one perfectly actually) so I've got high hopes.

Vinyl turned up in the post at ours yesterday. Yr usual awesome Designers Republic kind of thing (though one corner of the really sturdy thick box got mashed in the mail which is annoying). 2 records, and a 3rd sleeve that holds nothing but a poster!

ABBAcab (Trayce), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

The CD packaging is impeccable, 4-panel gatefold, with a limoncello-colored gradient fade towards the disk tray. The recording sounds very elegant, probably the most superficially-spacious autechre record I've ever heard. Already dropped for the 24-bit .wavs, a $9.99 cd, and I wonder what I'll do when I encounter the $40 vinyl. The album is good, and it puts most of their previous material in a more satisfying light. Kind of annoyed at the endless repetition-pattern of Treale, and the quality of the chimes in O=0, but otherwise an engaging record. Pretty ambivalent towards Known(1), pt2ph8 is f*ckin' golden.

Palpatean Mists (Lowell N. Behold'n), Thursday, 25 March 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

I've been listening to this on repeat and i can safely say this is the first thing they've done since EP7 that is solid gold. Glad to have you back Autechre.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 25 March 2010 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting to hear about people being big fans of Untilted. It wasn't a bad album, but to me it was veering way too close into an oblivious clatter of sound. I'm pleased Autechre have gone back to working with melodies again, something they've always been really good at but somehow left off of their last few offerings. I think on Oversteps they're doing some pretty complex things with these melodies, whereas on Draft and Untilted the emphasis was mostly textural/rhythmic. There seems to be a few rock and jazz influences too, which I haven't really noticed before with them.

dog latin, Thursday, 25 March 2010 12:46 (fifteen years ago)

The CD packaging is impeccable, 4-panel gatefold, with a limoncello-colored gradient fade towards the disk tray. The recording sounds very elegant, probably the most superficially-spacious autechre record I've ever heard.

Agree with all this. Picked this up yesterday (also $9.99) and I'm really enjoying it, one spin through.

the real one sounds like a big departure. known(1) (track 3) sounds like a digital harpsichord + banjo. the Altered:Carbon leak (fooled me) has cutup vocals on track 3.

There's also a various WATMMer-authored fake collection that's pretty remarkable. Some of it's indiscernible from middle-later period Autechre.

The vinyl edition of Oversteps is indeed lovely lovely.

I take it only those purchased through Bleep get the free download? My copy has no coupon of any kind that I can see. Which is a shame, of course.

I picked up a couple of the leaks out of curiosity and they are nothing like Oversteps, or much good even

Easily achieved by actually buying the CD/vinyl in a physical shop. ;-)

Oh hush. Last time I bought an Ae album unheard, it turned out to be Draft 7.30.

Which is awesome.

Olivier Messiaen Control (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 26 March 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

The only Ae I've heard is LP5/EP7/Confield. Had Tre Repetae for a bit but deleted it. But the previous three are so up my street, I should investigate their 00-10s stuff.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 26 March 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

confield/draft are probably the best of the last decade but oversteps is lovely

i don't quite see how one can have radically different opinions of any of these albums when they all derive from a fairly singular sensibility, slight narcissism of sd imo.....

nakhchivan, Friday, 26 March 2010 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Hmm don't know how you can square something like Leterel with some of the beat freak outs on Confield. Could definitely see their split into more inscrutable music bothering some previous fans.
Or maybe you're only talking about LP5 onwards.

Davek (davek_00), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

So this sounds a lot like Chiastic so far -- yay!

Daleks in NYC (Leee), Friday, 26 March 2010 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta say, while I'm a big Ae fan, I can only just about tolerate (not so much enjoy) Confield through Untilted. Everything else is amazing. My faves are def LP5 and EP7, but Oversteps has really got a hold on me. A lot of it is quite catchy, which is more than one can say of Draft and Untilted.

the sound isn't like a guitar, but it's played like one, errr... if you see what i mean?

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 26 March 2010 11:20 (fifteen years ago)

redfall has some maybe guitar-like wanky jazz noodling on it. bit too wanky for my tastes.

yeah i think that's it. i like that one.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 26 March 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

They do this "12 notes in search of a melody" thing from time to time, where it seems like they've just bashed out something random on a keyboard, and sometimes the notes fall beautifully (Draun Quarter, Cichli, Gelk), but sometimes it sounds just too aimless for my tastes.

the big pink suede panda bear hurts (ledge), Friday, 26 March 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

man, i have to listen to gelk again - that's from a peel session and it's really beautiful if i remember correctly?

i wonder about this sometimes, and whether Ae are having us on. They claim that there is always method to their madness and that nothing is random, rather the output of complex algorithmic chain reactions. But yeah, sometimes it sounds like a cat jumping around on an out of tune piano.

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 26 March 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

gelk + gaekwed both on peel sesh 2 and both a+++++ imo

i've got the impression that they create generative patterns where the melodies and the percussion sounds are results of a sort of 'patch' designed on software like Max/MSP. Where a sound or sounds are given parameters of activity in which they can generate indeterminate patterns, giving it a random feel. The parameters could be open, but possibly strict in a harmonic assignment. I believe there is a lot of this sort of action on the new one.

I'm with you ledge on doubting this record but I'm only 2 odd listens in. I think I might be standing by my initial reaction which was this is more of a pure atmospheres album than a pure moods album.

When I look back on Tri-Repetae++ the only tracks I listen to are #2 and #3 because those are the ones with the most endearing emotion in the industrial sounds

I saw them in Vienna, at the Flex which is a renowned dance club with an incredible sound system. Russell Haswell came on first and did ten minutes of white noise. Ae were as danceable as I've ever seen them. I wouldn't call it funky exactly, but it was jittery and jumpy mixed in with the expected harshness. I dunno, this isn't usually my area of interest but I found it unexpectedly listenable.

Thank you, anagram. That sounds great, and completely unlike what my friend saw on March 12 (? - approx.) in Birmingham. From my friend's email:

Still feeling completely brain damaged after standing directly in front of the speakers during this for 80 minutes a few nights ago. Not such a wise idea in retrospect.

("this" = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iEv9d4PrT8)

The sound was seriously bad, so muddy...bass was just utterly fuck off loud the whole time but the set was pretty much just one completely monolithic, grey arhythmic thud that had no real transitions or changes, no melodic parts, depth or feeling at all particularly. Purportedly the very rough, distorted and shitty mix is deliberate to prevent taping (*?!) The only reason I'd like to hear a recording now is so I can hear what I couldn't at the gig! One great thing about Autechre of course is that it's never a wise idea to have any preconceptions about them, but I do think that aiming for pure physicality of sound really sold themselves short. It's difficult to explain how perverse I thought it was at the time.

I don't need a bonghit. (ctrl-s), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

sonderangerbot, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

kinda ambivalent towards this album. sometimes it sounds lovely, and then at other times really dull. keep returning to it, out of some notion that it will somehow 'click' and reveal a kind of genius, but that's unrealistic. pt2ph8 is nice enough, and ilanders has got that slow, twisted churn. the production seems pretty novel for an autechre album (big, spacious, polished). getting a lot of polished stone and glass surfaces from it

original bgm, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

you should, because it's the best thing they've done since EP7.

I like the idea of these alternate albums. it does totally remind me of the dub tradition and the way you might get one side and then a dub side.

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I definitely will. I always seem to be running a few releases behind with autechre because I'm typically unsure about how I feel about a new one until I've spent some time with it.

but move of ten really clicked right off. but then I tend to find their EPs more digestible in general.
