Just finally getting it going here...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

I've lately sort of returned to this genre after many years away from it, occupied with other things. In the last two weeks I bought 09 albums from White Rainbow, Emeralds, and Mountains, along with Klaus Shulze's first album and a few other things along those lines. I feel born again.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Monday, 11 January 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

A healthy start. Anything Adam Forkner does always turns out well.

yeah I bought that '09 White Rainbow record in Arcata right after xmas and listened to it on the impossibly gorgeous drive up the coast and through the forest to Grant's Pass. it fit right in.

The CD that accompanies the (fantastic) new book by Graham Lambkin is off to a promising start.. we're at about a minute and a half in and it's all been droning choir so far. loving t.

Joint Custody (ian), Monday, 11 January 2010 07:27 (fifteen years ago)

the entire cd is a loop of the droning choir. it's very soothing and endlessly listenable. the track is only fifteen minutes long. put it twice on each side of a 60 minute cassette and set it to auto-flip.

Joint Custody (ian), Monday, 11 January 2010 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

Really enjoying the Sundog Peacehouse tape on Digitalis. All of which is available free on their website: http://sundogpeacehouse.com/music/

Blissout drones of the highest order.

From the label: "Sundog Peacehouse are Chris Mucci, Sal Farina and Austin Redwood and will soon be taking over their native Pittsburgh by lulling everyone into a codeine coma. Shimmering walls of heavily-processed vocals, guitars and samples ease you down into emerald green pools of total bliss. Pure waves of spiralling sonics drench you and hold you close. there is something so unbelievably comforting about this music"

Barnaby, Hardly, Monday, 11 January 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)

In the last two weeks I bought 09 albums from White Rainbow, Emeralds, and Mountains

I picked up the Emeralds one (which is predictably awesome). Still need to get White Rainbow into my hands, been anticipating that one for a while... not sure how I missed it last year.

scott seward, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

and more psych/drone/freak than noise anyway.

scott seward, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Time-Lag's reish of the Stephen David Heitkotter album is going to blow away a good chunk of new releases this year..

ramadaan muhammad asalaamica rasoul allah supana watallah (jk), Monday, 11 January 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

I tuned out of MV/EE for a while, but it looks like this Willie Lane dude plays with them on occasion, this 7" on Cord-Art is in a similar vein as the more simple, cosmic-sounding COM releases. and i thought i recognised the name, and then I remember it's cause he got a shout in the the latest Graham Lambkin CD. not the one with the book, which is rather hypnotic, yes.

just have a feeling that people will be clamoring to put out any/all unreleased/live/etc stuff. cuz that's what happens.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

when i go, there's gonna be A LOT of unreleased material -- talking about shopping lists, unfinished marketing reports, rare e-vites ... the archives, you know?

tylerw, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

I just spent like 15 seconds looking for the second disc of the new Skullflower album to put back in its case, before I realised it was still playing. I think this is a compliment. It is totally consuming and blown out. It just finished now and I feel altered

Am loving the White Rainbow record. The more ambient stretches are beautiful, something about it kind of makes me think of a synthier FSA or something. Do I need to go and check out Yume Bitsu?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 23 January 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

i bought a yume bitsu album once! i think it was even a double album. didn't like it much.

Anyone heard the new Major Stars yet?

I spoke with Sadhu Sadhu's Johnny Miller, a few days ago. Was part of an awesome show with Plastic Crimewave Sound, Dark Fog, and assorted others. He promised an LP, this year. His solo record is pretty fantastic, too. Anybody else familiar with this guy (also of Cloud Temple)?

lovin the ichiyanagi/ranta/kosugi improvisation 75 reissue on phoenix

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 24 January 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

The final Yellow Swans album Going Places = major traet. Reminds me of prime Flying Saucer Attack without really sounding like it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 January 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

Do you guys remember Psychic Ills? What ever happened to them?

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Psychic Ills were touring a few months ago, weren't they? I think that they're still active.

winnebago taco, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

my estimation of the yellow swans disc has gone down several notches since i got it. when i first played it loud it sounded cool to me, but then i played it more thinking i was gonna write it up for my noise column and i was really underwhelmed. it never really goes anywhere exciting. its minimal in a lazy way. its like they arbitrarily just end the songs at a certain point cuz, um, they have to end eventually. definite shoegaze buzz and i can hear the fsa-ness of the sounds, but in the end, there are a zillion beedroom noize dudes who could do this kind of thing in their sleep. i ended up not writing about it. wrote about - among other things - a guy who calls himself Pus Drainer, who puts out way deeper, darker, and more psychedelic electronoize. and you won't be reading about him on Dusted website anytime soon.

scott seward, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

that would be "bedroom". although i have heard some good "bee room" noise. and "bead room" noise has possibilities.

scott seward, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

Mmm bee rooms. It's true that the album is one of many in the vein, but it's done very nicely to my ears, as if after all the 'are we chaotic or are we droney and nice' stuff they'd done in the past they decided to end on a reasonable fusion of the two.

Now this Pus Drainer feller sounds worthy.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Woah, the new Yellow Swans on Type is blowing my mind this morning.

Barnaby, Hardly, Monday, 1 February 2010 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

I was extremely excited about the Grouper/Roy Montgomery split, though it proved pretty impossible to get on record. Does anyone know about new Roy Montgomery material?

HeckleNJekyll, Monday, 1 February 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

I would love new Roy Montgomery! The track on that split seems to be a live version of an old track, which is a bit disappointing, but I didn't even know he was playing live any more, so that's good news. Seconding the request for more info.

Seems that Grouper/Montgomery split pretty much sold out on preorders from her mailing list. Would've liked one myself (not heard it - boomkat has mp3/flac version for sale which I may buy later). Still wish I'd managed to pick up the Grouper/City Center split 7".

(On a side grumble, Boomkat has it tagged as "dark ambient / drone / metal". Is post-Sunn doom's co-optation of the word "drone" now so complete that we have to pretend all previous forms of music known as "drone" are metal-related?)

canna kirk (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 1 February 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone else heard the new Steve Gunn LP on Three Lobed? A lot better than the CD that came out on Digitalis awhile back, if you ask me. Serious jams.

the heitkotter reissue is out:

http://www.time-lagrecords.com/shop/products-page/catalog/

HEITKOTTER, STEPHEN DAVID ~ HEITKOTTER ~ lp (TIME-LAG 052)

fully licensed legit deluxe reissue of this completely unique slab of outsider private press psychedelia. long whispered about by the most inner circle of obsessive psych collectors, but up till now heard only by a lucky few. a true legend for sure, and rightfully so, as the bizarre story surrounding the lp is nearly as twisted as the music itself. ex-road runners drummer stephen david heitkotter recorded and pressed the lp in california sometime before 1971 as a demo only edition of no more then two dozen copies in blank white covers, then distributed it only to a handful of local san joaquin radio stations before the pressing plant destroyed the masters due to non-payment. within months of his failed attempt at radio stardom stephen was committed to the state mental ward, and that was that… but what an album he left behind… deeply damaged outsider/real people westcoast basement loner acid-garage-blues from a genuinely insane person, recorded at the very edge of oblivion. the sound of a last gasp at the teetering edge of the darkest void. a murky disjointed trip wobbling between acid-scorched un-reality and pure all-encompasing blankness… full electric band setting, but whether this was a purely solo endeavor or an actual band recording will remain a mystery forever. those close to stephen at the time swear he was already too far gone to assemble even a jam session, so the solo theory seems likely, making the musical deconstruction meltdown that much more disturbing. semi-tight playing disintegrates into meandering sonic smear at every turn, then somehow resolidifies and churns onward while bent deadpan vocals funnel garbled surrealisms from nowhere to nowhere. the scarily hyper-real yet ultra-weird otherworldly presence is as thick as it comes, and only enhanced by the raw/crude/muffled recording fidelity… not recommended for the weak of heart… co-released with earmonger records. mastered from the best possible original copy and pressed on 180gm audiophile vinyl. exact reproduction labels, including some wild hand embellishment from the man himself. heavy blank white 60s style art paper covers with hand stamped title. heavy insert with extensive liner notes. one time vinyl only limited edition of 1000 copies. no cd, no repress.

Soukesian, Friday, 5 February 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

Re: Heitkotter. Not sure if that's an essential purchase for all, or whatever, but it's definitely an essential listen. Totally fried record. Just...gone. Don't know how else to describe it. Very demo-sounding, damaged, random shit. Often very like a (sometimes remarkably) less professional "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet." Freak music, for sure.

winnebago taco, Saturday, 6 February 2010 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

not sure if it was mentioned on the previous thread or not, but the twinkranes album is very very good. brings cave to mind, though a bit heavier perhaps..

jerusalem & the starbaskets - battle of the orchids LP is out now. i haven't heard it yet, but if it's in any way a progression from 'the howling' it will be one of the LPs of the year.

The new Jonas Reinhardt disc on Kranky might as well be on the beardo disco thread as well -- though not much in the way of full-on drumming or disco pulse, it's definitely as close a tribute to late seventies Ash Ra Tempel as has come out yet and could easily be an alternate world soundtrack to the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series.

winnebago taco, Saturday, 20 February 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Same opinion here... I like the Inca Ore/Grouper split just fine, but the Grouper side is leaps and bounds awesomer to my ears.

Really enjoyed an in-store I saw by William Nowik, whose "Pan Symphony in E Minor" (private press from from 1974) was just reissued. He is the real deal -- spent several years in Afghanistan during the war, playing in places where you have to check your machine gun at the door. He definitely follows his muse.

He was a rip. He explained that he had been convicted by a jury of peers for his poor wah-wah playing on that '74 record, and that this show was his penance. He played barefoot on a rug, with more effects boxes splayed out in front of him than I'd ever seen. He also made effective use of an analog tape loop. Played great slide. And wah-wah. He also told some neat stories about his years in Afghanistan.

Thus Sang Freud, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Wet Hair is what happened after Raccoo-oo-oon broke up, if I'm not mistaken.

winnebago taco, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

yah two of the dudes. I have heard some records but haven't seen them live.
I saw Raccooooooon once and they were really good, the recordings were a let down. Then they broke up.

Trip Maker, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

Rene Hell was frigging brilliant opening the show last night.
Wet Hair were a little underwhelming, but I bought a few things from them since homeboy has a sweet psych drone underground diy label.
Plastic Crimewave played, too, and they were actually the hit of the night.
Got a new Yonker's thing from them, something "golden" something, can't remember the title. It's from '77. Excited.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Lovely Gold...? Crimewave can put on a hell of a show, for sure.

winnebago taco, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

Sure, that sounds right. Haven't listened to it yet. Feeling a little worse for the wear after the monday night psych-out, tbh.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Folks I don't make these claims lightly, but Ojos Rojos are outright RULING my world right now. Amazing show last night with them, Quarter After + Matt Tow, Chief Nowhere (amazing!), and Federale (brilliant!)

Ojos Rojos are from Claremont and are the answer to this equation: ( Loop x Bailter Space ) / Ride

haha what you're not taken by this glowing review?? (bolding is mine)

YES!!! Finally!! Angus and Bon Scott would def label this knockout collab as grade A T-N-T!!! Here's how it went down: The Machines were kicking it Brooklyn style last January for some jam time with Burning Sess Core, and the Tovinator had a solo slot in Glasslands on Super Bowl Sunday. Seeing how we both were worked up from the Pitts power plays and amazing Puck and Queen B quality time, Thurston added fuel to the fire and suggested that Conrad hit the stage with Tovah. Seeing how Tony only had his pajamas and an rusty old auto harp in tow, the aural jam scape was destined to be stripped down and tense. So here are the results!! Tovah on tin can 'voice,' tapes, and the sheet metal/spring 'mailbox' sculpture and Tony on unprocessed auto harp. No drone sound in sight, just a clanging, echoed, tangled sharp barbed nasty JAM. Super duper, like nothing else in either discography. Could be seen as a celebration in real time to the STEELERS, with STEEL and STRINGS. Amazing!!!! Edition of 200 in super weird covers, hand numbered.

That I actually read AFTER I was warned away from it, which just confirmed my opinion. I'll have to look out for the thing with Palestine.

Hey, does the Ramleh reissue "Hole in the Heart" go in this thread or noise? Cause it's pretty dronin', sometimes it sounds like A.R. Kane through heaps of distortion, other times it's definitely noise. It's really nice!

Listened to the new Carlton Melton album this morning - good and raw but I found it dificult to maintain attention over like 73 minutes, tho I realise this is slightly missing the point of a band honouring the fire of Hawkwind and Amon Duul or whoever

Carlton Melton has a 73-minute album? Isn't their new release a split?

bug holocaust (sleeve), Saturday, 15 May 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

I am excited for this new Daniel Higgs album - I saw him live a couple of months ago (in a depressingly empty room in D.C.) and the new songs (some of which I recognize by title on the tracklisting of "Say God") were awesome. Has anyone heard it? How does it compare to his other stuff?

Becky Facelift, Monday, 17 May 2010 14:51 (fifteen years ago)

Just ordered a copy, last night. Haven't heard it, though.

winnebago taco, Monday, 17 May 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

its not good imo. i saw him perform the stuff live and had to move to the back to try to escape it

am0n, Monday, 17 May 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

Ha... give me some context, though - do you like his other stuff? Lungfish?

Becky Facelift, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

o yeah lungfish and his other solo stuff and zomes i like. this was just... him with some pocket accordion (?) thing on his lap and he was saying "holy bible time" over and over for 20 min. there were a couple cool moments on the album but otherswise its mostly voice

am0n, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like you saw him around the same time so you'll probably be into it. this one's just not for me

am0n, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

Not at all! When I saw him he just had a banjo, and he mixed his longer, dronier numbers with some short fragments (the centerpiece was "Hoofprints of the Cieling of Your Mind," and that one included him opening the window of the venue to the Adams Morgan street (it was more of a restaurant then a place to see music) and conversing with various passersby). There were just a handful of people in the crowd (various D.C. legends and a couple of nerdy beard-os) and the show had a nicely informal feel to it.

But some of his solo releases are too distorted and formless for me. I half want the guy to make an album full of two minute pop songs, since he's got an incredible gift for rhythm and melody!

Becky Facelift, Monday, 17 May 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

i don't know what that instrument is, its like a wooden box that you open and close and it makes a drone

heard some new Social Registry stuff

search - Zs "New Slaves" - dunno how to describe this, groovy repetition that occasionally explodes into wild scree.
destroy - Psychic Ills "Catopric" - I may be done with these dudes, tired of waiting for them to make songs again and not just fuck w. some oscillators and play bongos over it. big fan of "Dins" but they've flopped since then imo

dmr, Friday, 21 May 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

"groovy" probably a stupid word to describe Zs but the opening track is like, chiming overtones and drum patterns and then you get to the title track and there's some harsh violin scrape and wild noise

I've been highly grokking Get Tree Behind Me Satan and Cokmok by Vluba. I think the former was released or re-released this year, but it might've been '09. The latter emerged in '07 or so, but what the hell...

Re. Cokmok via Ruralfaune: Vluba's parallel project, the TFCAOV recording is on astral silence. A silence certainly so silently as the sound of the edges of the planet. For this occasion they went to record it to a cave/cavern placed under the "Invisible Mountain" that they constructed and adapted as study of recording several years before the session i last about six night and in the seventh one, under a brilliant moon it was born "cokmok"... This is one of seven magic squares of the planetary geniuses. listening no clothes, no lights, no words and with incenses

Twilight of the Century is a collaboration between Century Plants (Eric Hardiman and Ray Hare of Albany) and rise set twilight (Linda Aubry Bullock and Michael T. Bullock of Boston).

These two shows celebrate the release of Linda Aubry Bullock's new Sedimental CD, Ray of Dark, a project featuring the members of Twilight of the Century.

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Extremely lovely if not entirely new -- I think it was released last year -- but Brad Rose's solo Space Dive tape on Digitalis is really, really nice. It's almost his...I hate to say minimal synth album, but it's all overdriven beautiful synth/keyboard/who knows what else murk which has this great half-whispered singing from him. All very lush.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 June 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

I hadn't checked my mailbox at the radio station in forever. It's rare that I get anything in it, but it happens on occasion.
There was a package from Last Visible Dog sitting in it this week, it's probalby been sitting there since September.
I'm listening to this Crows of the World vol. 2 comp, another in the long line of psych drone noise comps based around a common theme that is really meaningless, and it sounds really nice on this muggy June evening. Haven't listened to much stuff like this in quite a while. The Ashtray Navigations track features some heavy "guitar anti-heroics and 9v battery squeal." Nice contributions from RST, Shelter Death and Renato Rinaldi. There was a full-length from RR in the envelope, too. I wonder if anyone at the station will play this stuff?!

Trip Maker, Friday, 4 June 2010 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I always felt bad that LVD sent stuff to my station... there used to be shows that would play the more out-there stuff, but since I started playing more straight-up psych, the noise guy went metal, and there is no "arcana"/experimental show anymore, well, it just wound up sitting on the shelf.

How about some 'weird synth shit' inspired by Goblin and John Carpenter soundtracks? Or something with "Beach" in the title? Now that would be cutting fucking edge, my friend.

And thank you for being so desperate to be heard / liked / invited to the cool table that you'll give away your music for 'free.' Way to set precedent. Way to make it even harder for dilettante idiots web-wide to have an even harder time discerning what's real from what's mimicry. Well done.

the June issue of the Wire magazine had references to "hypnagogic pop" in several articles, that read so awkwardly, it made me wonder if it was edited in, or there was some editorial missive that went out to all the writers to "please use this term that we coined whenever appropriate" ...

Weird Ribs again. Sorry to offend you, if you're not interested don't listen. But obviously this thread is here because some people have an interest so I'm sharing. It's free because it's a hobby and I don't have the name for myself required to sell some records.
I'm more interested in ambient/field recording and noise, but I slot nicely into the area too, so folk interested in the 'hypnagogic' most likely would be interested in this. Just as folk from electronica or noise boards etc share an interest too.

scott, whose gear was that?

markers, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

Jack Callahan. awesome percussionist. he played as a percussion duo with a friend and then played with a horn section and electric bass. very cool. very improv.

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

noise nomads played that night too and he was working majik with his tibetan prayer bowl. it was just a really good night for interesting sounds.

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

sounds super dope!

markers, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

i have a punk show coming up next friday. great metal show in october.

i didn't go see the sunburned/major stars/rangda show the other night. i watched the kids so that maria could go. she had fun. she really liked wayne & kate. so much music coming up around here. TOO much almost.

we all had a great time at the vetiver show that my brother put on in hudson a couple weeks ago. maria and rufus and cyrus and i all went. out friend nina violet opened up and ARP also played. dug arp's action. posted this on the wdyll thread, but there was a picture in this sunday's new york times of me and my brother in law andy at the vetiver show. making me ilx beardo of the month, i believe.

i'm in the middle in the shorts. all wet. it was raining like crazy outside. love that space in hudson. my brother played there with rangda last week. and i love my brother's space in hudson too! so crazy and huge. across from the train station. so many records...

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Fursaxa was one of my favorite sets at ATP. Tara is now playing as a trio with Mary Lattimore and Helena Espvall. The set was transfixing and sounded great on the beefy sound system in a decent size room.

FRESH MEAT (MFB), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 03:01 (fifteen years ago)

Currently really enjoying the new album by Arp, The Soft Wave.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Sunday, 12 September 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Everything I've heard so far by Outer Spacist has had a positive effect on my ganglia. They're kinda in the Black Angels-ish vein. Recommended.

Last night's show here at UCI was a great West Coast treat -- expanded lineup of the Faraday Trippers opening, then Robedoor, the Grey and Eternal Tapestry finishing it off. Surprised I'm awake and at work, really.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 November 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

The Greys, not the Grey (but the Grey sounds like a good bandname...)

Everything I've heard from Rene Hell so far has been really great. Porcelain Opera cd on type is some of the best stuff I've heard this year. Listening to the Rene Hell/Three Legged Race lp right now. I have a couple more coming in the mail. This guy really needs a dedicated thread. I'm pretty sure there are a few Rene Hell supporters on ilm.

Manuel Göttschlong (van smack), Friday, 17 December 2010 03:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yup. Friendly guy and good live sets as well.
