An early nomination for single of the year would be Echo by Girl's Can't Catch. Huge drums and an even bigger chorus, I'm kinda shocked how addicted to it I am.

So did Dr. Luke do the alleged song stealing for Kesha since I think he's credited as a writer? In the NY Times profile of her she says she used to sing country and wants to return to that at some point.

I don't feel like the similarities are great enough to call either comparison "song stealing." If anything it's groove-stealing or riff-stealing. Luke definitely works from a tight formula that is not unlike what a lot of other pop songwriters are drawing from, but since most of the similarities have to do with the backing track he produced, I guess he'd be culpable in the supposed theft.

Hearing the second Ke$ha single "Blah Blah Blah" with 30H!3 on the bridge makes me think that perhaps she should be grouped with them and Cobra Starship etc. more than Lady Gaga.

"Blah Blah Blah" is basically a companion piece to "Starstrukk".

Since this is the de facto chart-geek thread, I thought I'd mention this letter I just sent to the New Yorker:

John Seabrook writes in Talk of the Town (Feb. 1) that four singles from Lady Gaga's first album "have gone to No. 1 on the Billboard chart--a remarkable, first-ever feat for a debut effort." This is somewhat misleading. Billboard publishes a wide range of charts, and the one for which Lady Gaga set the record is the Mainstream Top 40, a chart that monitors airplay on only a few dozen radio stations and has existed for less than 20 years. While Gaga's sudden success is certainly impressive, her performance on the older, better-known, and more-comprehensive Hot 100 chart is not quite as exceptional: there, two songs from her debut album have reached No. 1, which puts her behind eight artists, including Paula Abdul, George Michael, and Mariah Carey, who share the record of four.

Can't say I'm surprised at the omission, though. Journalists do this all the time when talking about Billboard. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a song or album is said to have topped "the charts," when it's usually only the Hot 100 or Billboard 200 that's being referred to. I get that not everyone is an expert about this stuff and so it probably seems pedantic to specify an actual chart, but it just seems sloppy otherwise. Even just saying "the Billboard album chart" would be fine -- in that case, it's implied that it's the general comprehensive chart and not one of the genre-specific ones.

People don't take "#1" as seriously as they used to (back in my day etc etc); I think the Destiny's Child album "#1s" was particular egregious - they've only had four #1 Billboard hit songs and there were 16 songs on that album, you figure it out.

I hope that Shinedown song "If You Only Knew" with its melodramatic croaking vocals listing off the time with a kind of when I need you now in the middle of the night theme does not rise higher up the pop chart. Iyaz "Replay" may be formulaic r'n'b but I like that formula better than Shinedown's.

I keep trying to find fun pop-rock songs in the charts but I am not succeeding. Roscoe Dash/Soulja Boy is way more vibrant to me than Train or Shinedown. Although I can see "All The Way Turnted Up" being annoying after awhile in its repetition

ok, so i heard this r&b/hip hop song on the radio today, and i could have sworn, there was a cocteau twins sample in the background, or atleast something that sounded extremely similar to them. the "sample" was that vocalizing "ooh oooh ahhh ahh" babbling thing that elizabeth fraser does alot or atleast a dead ringer for that. the singer was female, im pretty sure, but there was a lot of autotuning going on too, so i cant be 100% sure, or maybe there were multiple singers. has anyone else heard this or know who it is? i don't think it's a huge song yet cause it's the first time i've heard it on the radio, and through various means, i do listen to a decent amount of mainstream radio so i know most of the biggest hits. thanks.

They have released two singles so far: "Tokyo" and "I Wish". They also released a buzz track ("Bedroom Viber") in-between. The song I posted above will be 3rd single (comes out in May). If it doesn't flop I'd say it's likely their album will be out this summer.

Hey I said "maybe"....I'm still looking -- saw a lame Adam Lambert video this morning and some other mediocre one yesterday by someone whose name I have forgotten.

While some decent pop-rock has made the charts over the years, I still think the failure of Album-Oriented Rock programmers like Lee Abrams way back in the late '70s and early '80s to give punk/alternative/indie whatever a chance on the many stations they control, has made the kind of pop-rock many of us are looking for more the exception than the rule--while bombastic "heartland" versions of many other genres of rock dominate and proliferate.

i think removed from the immediate saturation that occurred when it became a hit, it's easy to take that song on its own merits, which is a dope, minimal beat that is really catchy -- the verses have a good flow & pacing, hook is good enough.

I'm more or less agnostic abt xtina's wailing but that is a fun song and that fucking beat is crazy

the xtina holler is an amazing thing.

for me it's not so much the wail as the sickly organ/horn fart backing it up that makes the intro unlistenable for me. don't really hear anything crazy in the beat either, it's all kinda on the nose and lacking any element of surprise or creativity.

the horn chords at the beginning are really cool imo

well it depends -- out here in columbia, mo we have two pop stations that i find to be very unimaginative even by pop radio standards & they play a lot of music that i want to 'know' about but not that i necessarily wanna hear all the time & we don't have a rap/r&b station so i don't fuck with the radio

when i'm in miami i'm pretty much radio 24/7 but i'm never there for more than 3-4 weeks at a time so i don't get sick of it & kinda savor having 4 good radio stations

Yeah, I drive less than I used to, so I've been feeling less tuned into pop music in the last year or two. Occasionally I'll listen to clips on iTunes from their most-downloaded chart if there are a bunch of songs I don't recognize.

Popjustice is pretty good for, well, pop. If it wasn't for PJ I'd never have known about Sabrina Washington's comeback single after her stint in the jungle with Ant and Dec.

I watch a lot of MTV Hits and MTV Jams and Fuse etc. Also listen to the radio, albeit not nearly as much as when I had a long daily commute. Plus singles jukebox, blogs, charts, etc.

i occasionally listen to the radio, and i do pay quite a bit of attn to billboard charts and what people are buying on itunes. i lurk a few pop music forums because i find the obsessed fandom to be an interesting phenomenon. if i'm up super-late which is often the case over the summer, i will watch mtv or vh1.

Luckily, we do have a decent enough rap & R&B station, which is nice. But, still, I want to move away from listening to the radio. Hearing the same songs again and again can get O_O. Also, in general, I prefer to choose what I'm listening to rather than having someone else choosing it for me. At least that's how I feel being someone who's listened to the same four radio stations forever.

I was going to ask for some recommendations as well because I have basically been listening to the same stuff over and over this year. I have maybe listened to 3 new albums this year? Marina & the Diamonds - really liked, Ida Corr - really liked, Robyn - eh. It's been ages since I listened to the radio, it goes in waves and once I hear everyone talking about a song I don't recognize (haven't heard OMG yet) I start feeling senile and old and listen again until I get bored of the repetition of top 40 radio, and repeat cycle.

i guess i'm spoiled, in the Baltimore/D.C. area I get 3 hip hop/R&B stations, a really good classic rock station and a couple OK contemporary rock stations...I only really defer to the pop station if none of the above are playing anything good and I don't wanna put in a CD.

I mean, I hear the "Tik Tok" similarity, but I didn't notice it until pointed out to me, whereas I started hearing "Holiday" like halfway through my first time hearing it.

as much because it makes me feel old as going o_0 at your unfamiliarity with madonna. obv i was only one year old when "holiday" came out but it's more the realisation that there have been precious few reasons to pay attention to madonna at all in the past decade and it's natural that people who came of age in the 00s wouldn't see her as relevant

that doesn't change the fact that YOU NEED TO BRUSH UP ON HER DISCOGRAPHY~~~
