Anyone here into them or bands of their ilk?

ewehorn, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't understand the fuss.

fields of salmon, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunno who the Ratpure are. The Rapture I like though. Warmed over Gang of Four... I'm a sucker for it.

Yancey, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Rapture better when they were warmed over the Cure and I don't even like the Cure.

Jack Cole, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

them and the liars and radio 4 and !!! and so on are taking quite a page from post-punk history in redoing "do the du"...but i've always thought factory and go4 and pil deserved some due. so i do like it. i'm just conflicted.

sorry for the doo doo, m.

msp, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"House Of Jealous Lovers" is the only Rapture track I know. It is much much more discofied than Gang of 4 or ACR ever were, which is one reason I like it so much - so no conflict for me.

Tom, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they played at optimo here in glasgow last night and if it wasn't for the fact that i'd seen the boredoms the night before it would easily have been the best band i've seen all year. truly mindblowing 21st century no wave disco rock. for once, believe the hype!

stirmonster, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, they're good and all, but i CAN NOT stand the fact that they play for about 15 minutes. argh.

cybele, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

!!! are mediocre funk. Why are you calling them postpunk?

And believe the hype? Since when did The Rapture have hype?

Yancey, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to like the Rapture more, but the vocals aren't the right form of "wacky" for me. I could do without the screaming too. The EP released last year was a bit sloppy too too.

Andy K, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rapture are more discofied. ..

yeah. ..but considering that ESG, liquid liquid, new order, shriekback, etc all served as dance (post-punk dance in my opinion) leads to some pretty serious comparitives. i was ineffectively trying to convey that whole scene, which encompasses quite a few bands.

i'm not saying don't listen. especially live, i think the rapture are fuckin amazing. so are the liars. no wave funk punk indeed!! hot damn!

!!! is post-punk solely due to the fact that the members are quite literally former (and continuing) members of punk bands and play with punk bands. were the slits not punk then? guilty by association at least.

m.

msp, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"!!! is post-punk solely due to the fact that the members are quite literally former (and continuing) members of punk bands and play with punk bands."

So you mean post-punk in a very literal way then? Does that make Wings post-British Invasion or something?

Yancey, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Rapture are boring, soft, "dance/punk" music that is neither.

The Ratpure, on the other hand, totally kick ass.

Nick A., Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The EP released last year was a bit sloppy too.

A bit?!? I thought it highlighted just how important it is for Gang of Four-style post-punk to be tight, otherwise it just sounds like a big ugly mess. I did like that song "Out Of The Races And Onto The Tracks" though.

Dave M., Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Alienation' is a great song. But I think they're massively over- hyped. Some of their songs sound like Sonic Youth being put through a blender.

D., Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Rapture are boring, soft, "dance/punk" music that is neither.

They were on the radio today. My housemate asked when did I star listening to Blur?

brg30, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Rapture are boring, soft, "dance/punk" music that is neither.

They were on the radio today. My housemate asked when did I start listening to Blur?

brg30, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both "House Of Jealous Lovers" and "Olio" are fabulastic. That's all I've heard but it's enough to be impressed.

Tim, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new single remake of "House of Jealous Lovers" (w/ Morgan Geist dub) roxxx me like a hurricane.

Douglas, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

massively over-hyped? as compared to what? The Strokes? blimey.

i think The Rapture are pretty damn fine. So for that matter are numbers (from the one cut i've heard). Give me re-fried post punk anyday.

Andrew, Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(w/ Morgan Geist dub)

YEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!

Andy K, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love them obv.

The original question asked 'or of that ilk' and some of the, erm, 'ilk' turned up in the LCD Soundsystem thread (or the wildbuch one - erm can't find it Tom started it last week), y'know the one.

Where was I? Oh yes, well obviously LCD are of that ilk, but who else? Are they getting, erm, 'ilked' with the electroclash folks? If so I can feel a 3hour lecture of my record buying in the early 80s coming on. While I've repeatedly commented that the Gang Of Four and the Human league were on the same lable and played gigs together because they were both part of the same thing - thats not the same as saying they are the same thing.

Another contradiction, The Rapture don't feel old, but are clearly - whats the word, not avoiding the 'i' word, its just not the right one. Lets just say I wouldn't be surprised in there is a copy of 'Contort Yourself' and 'Anthrax' in their record collections. Some (most) electroclash feels old to me - though i need a different word there as I am not meaning that pejoratively. Even my beloved Detroit Cobras and The Dirtbomns feel old in the sense Im grasping for here.

So name that ilk folks! Already sought down radio 4 (um not sure) and Erase Errata (umm, not for me thanks).

Alexander Blair, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Next to those Gang of Four records are the first five Cure albums, you know...

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well nobody's perfect.

Tom, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boom boom!

Nicole, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Five?

Not counting the US and UK versions of the first album seperately and not counting that thing with the frog on it that came with Faith (erm, Carnage Visor?), I would say there are only four cure albums in there (ie not The Top). I just checked on Allmusic and its definately four. One of the reviews mentions 'angular' so its defintely post- punk.

Later period Cure there may be a debate but surely only the most churlishly would deny the impact and power of those four?

Alexander Blair, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

_Three Imaginary Boys_/_Boys Don't Cry_
_Seventeen Seconds_
_Faith_
_Pornography_
_Japanese Whispers_

Last one may be debatable, but the seeds are there.

Dan Perry, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What Dan said (grr, another Cure debate to come in too late on -- and I would count "Carnage Visors," but I would).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
I'm reviving this because "Olio" is just fantastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Rapture are kinda like Interpol for me in the sense that, well, yeah some of these songs are really nice, but only because they remind me so much of other songs by earlier bands that I like even more. Which is a slight blessing but moreso a brick wall than anything else. :-/

The Rat-Pure on the other hand are fucking amazing. Ditto to what everyone above has said about them.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm anxious to hear the album, which apparently does not have "House of Jealous Lovers" on it. (way to keep that mystique going, guys!)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a little lost on the appeal of "House of Jealous Lovers". I'm trying to find "Olio" now...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Olio" is way better than "House of Jealous Lovers", particularly the acid-inflected dance version.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

which apparently does not have "House of Jealous Lovers" on it.

if this is true their label can go fuck themselves

I do think however that it is being included on a DFA compilation.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry in a likes-the-Cure-soundalike better shockah!

ESOJ, I gathered that the album is closer to "Olio" in nature so they decided not to disrupt its sound. I do hope there's a comp soon, though.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the Rapture last week & once again they've seemed to make another quantum leap from the previous time I saw them (which would be a mere five months ago, in this case). There seems to be plenty more where the Olio remix and House of Jealous Lovers came from, so here's hoping that the album does indeed come out in April, as has been reported. If you can listen to the last two singles and pinpoint exactly where they're ripping all of their ideas from, then I suppose you can do the same thing for "Screamadelica" (I'll spot you George Michael for free). If you need "Jealous Lovers" on CD and can't wait for the DFA 12" comp, there's a promo CD version (same tracks) that the band's been flogging. Happy hunting...

R. Lim, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't Olio over four years old now?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

RATPURE!

dave q, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I thought the story was that the Ratpure were languishing on SubPop and DFA saved them and produced the HOJL 12", which is why Olio sounds nothing like how they sound now. Or something.

So anyone ever heard the pre-Rapture project the Calculators?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

HAVE YOU, Aaron W?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I want a copy (CDR even!) of the Insound tour support CD. Anyone want to make a trade for something?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe, Andy K!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, "Olio" was first on Mirror, and that version is better than the 12"... the love here confuses me, unless yalls talking about the original version.

I have not heard the Calculators, but I'm guessing it's not too great, since Mirror, by and large, blows. But spill it, Aaron!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

If you check the Rapture site on dfarecords.com, you'll see the old news update from August 2002 that says that both "House of Jealous Lovers" and "Olio" will be on the full length when it comes out.. so's you know...

tinobeat (tinobeat), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both the original and the remix are great, Yanc3y.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Calculators. No they're good... in my past life when I ran a label I put out a 10" by them. Sounded a bit like the Faint in a good sort of way. Anyway, drummer split to join keyboardist/guitarist (who had already quit the Calculators by the time I put out the 10") to form the Ratpure. I think there were like 300-400 of those 10"s sold... I have three left.

I like the Morgan Geist remix of HOJL the best (does anyone else???).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Morgan Geist remix of HOJL the best (does anyone else???).

Maybe, Aaron W!

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

to quote a great (fictional) T shirt I saw in Chunklet fanzine: "Gang of 4 Is Not A Genre, A$$holes!"

roger adultery, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ratpure are touring in the next couple months! Yay.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Gang of 4 Is Not A Genre, A$$holes!"

ehheh genius!
rapture however r dud

schnell schnell, Friday, 7 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

they stayed at my house once, but weren't very nice.

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Ratpure are touring in the next couple months! Yay.

That time is now. revive? reviews?

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

god the new album is so good

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

they were excellent (tight, fun, funny) live and seem like nice guys, too. we all went to the same post-show bar and my friend gave the singer an aaliyah pin (how cute). the final encore was louie louie which was fitting as they came across as a total party band...there are some nice surprises in their set that i don't want to spoil...i'm definitely looking forward to the album now.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

judging by the show i bet jess is OTM.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not quite the disco/nu-wave album we (?) had all hoped for - a bit of the old skronk, check the "careering" vocal grab on the title track fer instance - but "i need your love" and the re-recorded "olio" and the last-few songs are total mope-pop-disco genius. also, it DOES have "hojl".

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrrrr I want it I want it I want it!

I Need Your Love was on a Jockey Slut free CD, it is fucking great. They are playing here in July.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I just "got" them the other day. I now want said album. It must be great.

Re:The Ratpure. gaz started a thread about this the other day. But I'm not going to tell you how to find it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 8 May 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rapture recordings I've heard have been pretty lackluster (I haven't heard much, though). I did see them back in December at the Bowery and really enjoyed the show. Of course they followed the completely obnoxious LCD Soundsystem (i think that's the name), so they may have benefitted from the "concurrence to shit" correlation.

Will (will), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure it's not as much fun as starring in Old School, Will, but both the Rapture and LCD Soundsystem are great...

(and my feelings on the rapture album are well documented)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the new litmus test for all music = is it better than starring in Old School?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit music sucks!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, I'm always willing to give a band another listen. They just rubbed me the wrong way that night. And easy on the name, I've been WF since 1976 (and Pops before that). Damn you Roxbury Bros.!!

Will (will), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotcha, Will. Sorry about the name. It's just that J1mmy Fall0n trashed this place a few months ago.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 8 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the album so much.

u+k - has anyone got the cat's cradle show from a couple of months ago that's floating around on slsk?? the few tracks i've managed to grab are fantastic...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 8 May 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a feature on the Rapture in this weeks SF Bay Area Guardian (along an article on Richard Thompson, the British folk scene, and that Texas funk comp.... good week)

they're playing next Tuesday the 13th at American Music Hall. i can't wait

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 9 May 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course they had to come to my town the week before finals. Fuck!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 9 May 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm digging on Echoes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too! I've been even downloading it with a crap snail dial up connection.

So far I have "I need your love", "heaven", "olio" and "hojl", and almost have "open up your heart".

I didn't expect it to be quite so rocky. Still loving it though. Are there other electronic songs besides Olio and I Need Your Love.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have the tracklisting with me. Damn it. I love the one with the cowbell solo in the middle. Brilliant.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! i'm just having my first listen Echoes right now, i'm a sucker for the Gang Of Four/PIL thing, i like it when the singers voice does the crossing betwien Tom Velrain and John Lydon.

rexJr., Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

when I first heard "House of..." I was annoyed. Im totalling loving it now though. I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel like I'm very late to the party, but this new ILK is pleasing me very much and I am hoping it is because it is the right direction for music to go in and not just because I have a developed a nostalgic fondness for the very early 80s music this resembles. Not nostalgia for being there, nostalgia for just not being there (I mean I was listening to music then but I was under 10 so it wasn't in the same way as being a teenager).

Anyway yeah - I saw the Ratpure at Optimo a few weeks ago and it was a blast, and I love the LCD soundsystem mix of Le Tigre that RJG put on a tape for me, and some of the Radio 4 I heard was good. It's all just so invigorating.

Does this ILK have name or not?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

do you mean ilk without capital letters?

It's being called "punk-funk" as far as I can see. I like the Le Tigre remix too. I think you're still early enough to the party in some sense N, if the Rapture are to get as big as I reckon they will.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk-funk is fair enough. Yes - ILK=ilk. I just liked the look of it in caps.

What other tracks should I look out for?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Give It Up" by LCD Soundsystem quite alot.

I also am quite into the Playgroup album (called Playgroup) which is slightly older than the Rapture et al. I know some others here aren't into that but it's very cheap at this point and I think worth a purchase. It's a bit more funk in places than punk but it does have a pretty broad smattering of everything.

Best tracks which fit the "punkfunk" thing off that IMO: Overflow, Make It Happen. My favourite Rapture track is "I Need Your Love", also recommended is the DFA mix of Metro Area, I forget which track they've done but it's good, probably easy enough to download somewhere.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan: Download Sister Savior next. You'll love it.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Killing" is total jeep music

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, Blount. That's what I said in my DFA thread a while ago...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"open up your heart" is the stunner -- totally reminiscent of bowie's "five years".

mosurock (mosurock), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

went to the show last night. super fun. they played all the hits and a bunch of new tracks. did a couple of all synth/ dance beat tracks. one was nearly a Cure cover. i wish the guitarist/ singer would stop doing that stupid, super high pitched falsetto like he does on "the pop song" from _out of the races_. it's 10 times more annoying live than on disc.

i never want to go to a show again. ever. why does "that one guy" always have to be standing next to me. you know the one that dances like he has epilepsy and falls all over everyone. and there were just way too many angled hair cuts and leg warmers.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

if there's a guy dancing like a dipshit then you just have to show him up.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Jason, your audience description made it sound like you actually went BACK IN TIME to 1983!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

1. I love that the title of this thread is RATPURE.
2. DOes anyone have the tracklisting for Echoes?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

if there's a guy dancing like a dipshit then you just have to show him up.

i showed him an elbow in the back a few times. and his girlfriend showed her grinding backside to my frontside a few times too. i mostly didn't like it.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"mostly"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Did her backside get shown the cock a few times too?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. here's the tracklist of the promo copy which is on soulseek

1-Olio
2-Heaven
3-Open up your heart
4-I need your love
5-The coming of spring
6-House of jealous lovers
7-Echoes
8-Killing
9-Sister saviour
10-Love is all
11-Infatuanition

Both great tunes, it was worth the wait.

Sami (Sami), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Got the Out Of The Races... EP today for a quid in Croydon. Please tell me they've got better since then (note: did like HOJL).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of this is a bit Pixies, anyone agree?

Also I'm thinking the boldness of having a 4/4 house tune and such rocky stuff on one album is seriously deserving of praise.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yr so spot on about the variety on D-d-don't stop ronan.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i like it more every time i listen to it. on headphones today was a revelation. "killing" is indeed total booming in yr jeep music. (could have done with a few more horn-stylee synth/sample horn stabs.) am really amazed they have reigned in that inevitable indie desire to freak out all over the shop enough to make an album which actually grooves for something like 80% of the time.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention, "Killing" shows some Nelly influence with a spacy feel. yessir i do like it.

rexJr., Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

like it more every time i listen to it.
I agree. i think its one of thoughs albums that the more you listen to it, the more you dig it. well at least fr me, it sounded OK on first listen but better on the second.

rexJr., Wednesday, 14 May 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe how much i like this.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This is amazingly good music.

xnelio (xnelio), Thursday, 15 May 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

haha sterling it doesn't count if both are fucking shit!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it more and more with each listen as well. I hear the Robert Smith in his voice. It makes me move my pelvis more and more with each listen as well. Like the red haired nerd from Revenge of the Nerds, Pointdexter.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I never expected to like this album as much as I have. And I'll add Richard Hell and Marc Almond to the list of dudes we think the singer sounds like.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 15 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second that. I was a little skeptical, but I got it last night (though I haven't listened all the way through yet) and it's WAY better than I thought it would be.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 15 May 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

2 cds still in the mail from amazon, but I fell in love with them live; I understand the beatboxy vers of Olio is the recorded one?

And wow is the guy's voice HIGH. I like it, it manages to be the goth-indie squeal to a Mayfield falsetto (that sounds like overpraise, but I think you get meh) It was pretty shocking, b/c I'd only heard HOJL and the 'rock' vers of Olio that was on gabba.net and those two are like the BOTTOM of his register!

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Admittedly I'm taken aback by the level of praise. Love the patch in the middle but the remainder seems like "eh not bad"/avg. indie rock to me. I've probably listened to the whole thing about a dozen times now. I'm finding the guy's voice less and less tolerable.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope to hear the album today and actually see the band perform tomorrow. And then I shall report.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

His voice makes the group! See, this is how you work the itinerant tuneless yelp correctly.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact, the entirety of _Echoes_ is what The Beta Band SHOULD have sounded like.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They did a stellar job sequencing the tracks. Assuming this is the track order of the real release.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not that tuneless! One song (dunno which yet) did the whole leading-tone-in-a-minor-key trick and he (and the bass player, who also sings a fair amt) hit it every time. (but I get what you mean, Dan)

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

When's it out over here?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 May 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(Yeah, I was talking more about vocal quality than the actual notes he's hitting.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I had the "Races" EP, and liked half of the tracks, then went off them. Then I heard the "old" version of Olio and thought "meh". Then I heard the "new" version of Olio...can't wait for the album. The last song on the aforementioned EP ("Caravan"?) is also great.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 15 May 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers for the Sister Saviour recommendation Yancey, it's excellent.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, Ronan. It's my fave on there by far.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it's got that swirly club feel to it, I could almost imagine it being played out. I also look forward to seeing who'll do the remixes when they release more singles. I'd love to see Jacques or someone get a hold of Sister Saviour.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

sister saviour = "jeopardy" by the greg kihn band

mosurock (mosurock), Thursday, 15 May 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The new record's OK. I like the old "Olio" better tho.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of this is a bit Pixies, anyone agree?

Yes, track 2. Some of it's a bit Minutemen, too.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the best part is that i have a feeling their best record is still to come.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That's so very true, jess. And I don't have that feeling very often. It's a good feeling.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i keep wondering how much of this is murphy and goldworthy. it's pretty well-known that the rapture and dfa spent a lot of time on this record, and jim & tim spent a lot of time trying to convince the rapture to go in more of a dance direction. obviously their prodding worked. live they are still much closer to out of the races (which i loved then and i love now, h8rs step off!) than "hojl," so i think there might be two bands at work here -- the rapture (sorry, ratpure) studio act, which combines dance and rock convincingly, stressing each equally, and the rapture the live act, which doesn't stray too far from the gang of four template.

i would not be surprised, actually, if they never make another record. since they hooked up with dfa almost two years ago they've really been sheltered and coddled by jim & tim -- tons of studio time, lots of off days, etc. -- and once echoes drops (sometime in 2k7, at this rate) they'll be in a spotlight that they've managed to court yet avoid at the same time. i dunno if they'll be able to handle it. i hope they can, though. they're sweet guys and an amazing band...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

another point: a friend proposed that the dfa is courting this early factory records vibe in that they're trying to stay out of the limelight but at the same time trying to bring the attention to themselves without looking like they want it. standard-issue p.r. for sure. he suggested that once the rapture, juan maclean and lcd soundsystem records drop (a couple of which perhaps on a major label, say some who are in the know) the dfa will no longer be able to maintain this air of mystery and they'll become just another pair of studio heads and the dfa as we know it will die.

i dunno if i believe that, but it's interesting to think about. that once the dfa becomes THE DFA they'll effectively cease to exist. i dunno.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard lcd soundsystem besides "give it up" and "losing my edge"?

They're not too far away from exploding are they? It certanly isn't a scene that will stay in any one incarnation for very long.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i was talking to matos about what the reception to the rapture will be once echoes drops, and i maintain that the glossy reviews will not be great, just cuz they generally aren't friendly to dance music, just like the mainstream u.s. scene isn't. for the rapture i think it'll be a big in nyc, la and europe situation. elsewhere they won't do shit.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jockey Slut and Muzik over here are creaming themselves non stop about all the DFA stuff, partly because they're dying to promote a big new trend for dance music I suppose which might be irritating except that in fairness they're not going about it in the annoying "this is the new dance music" way which less informed stuff inevitably will once it breaks big.

But they are doing the whole creating terms like "disco pogo" and using "punkfunk" on every page almost in an effort to make it seem a huge event. I think they're anxious to be more up to speed with this than they were with electroclash.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

...the dfa will no longer be able to maintain this air of mystery and they'll become just another pair of studio heads and the dfa as we know it will die.

I think that depends wholly on the quality and fabric of the records they decide to drop, but it's an interesting thought.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Wilson had this great quote at the SXSW talk about how not seeking publicity was fantastic until the novelty wore off (circa about 1981-82 or so). It'd prolly be reasonable to assume that DFA is gonna hit the same sort of wall, but hey, they can deal with it when it happens.

I was pretty impressed by how well the Ratpure pulled off the sound of the record when they played live. Obviously, I can see why jim & tim love working with them... they seem pretty malleable, and I don't mean that in a bad sort of way.

The guy at the merch table said late summer for a release date, btw, and even that sounded kind of tentative. I do wonder what the delay is? Seems like it'd be a perfect summer record. Is their international distribution REALLY that hard to sort out?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There are deals afoot, Aaron. The date's gone from late May to June to now August, from what I've heard. But yeah, some majors are not only courting the Rapture but the DFA as a whole, which would obviously be tough. It's hard to see how the DFA's current inconspicuous approach would mesh with the demands of the likes of Iovine, Davis, etc.

And yeah, the Rapture does seem malleable in a good way. We need more bands who don't respect their own sound and style as much as they should (see my Calla thread).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the unwritten law against releasing indie rock records while school's out must be remembered also

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Trevor Jackson just dying to release all this stuff on Output in the UK and get the kudos though?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

very true blount. as odd as it sounds, cmj still matters in some worlds!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Weird that they'd want to go that route, Yanc3y. Bet they must be getting some phat deals coming their way though.

The thing that worries me... if Alan McGee taught us anything, it's that once you make your deal with the major, you're gonna sell loads more records but it's basically all over.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's sort of what Roc-a-fella and No Limit did, brought their own marketing/pr methods to daddy major.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i love Musik

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 15 May 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I just checked this thread and apparently nobody has mentioned it, so I will...to my surprise, because I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Thom Yorke as a vocal influence/touchstone here. "Open Up Your Heart" may indeed have the whole Bowie "Five Years" thing going but vocally it reminds me of nothing so much as a variant of "Karma Police"/"Rabbit In Your Headlights"...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Rapture backlash begins... now!

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(And "Infatuation" as well...though that one's got enough Cure-circa-The Top all over it to make poor Dan die of delight if he hasn't already. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe no one's mentioned Screamadelica (well, one guy did but it wasn't in the same way) as a point of reference for this album--it's basically an American version of that album only actually really good beyond a couple of tracks. then again, I don't hear it being the full-on masterwork a lot of you guys do, though I do enjoy it a lot.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

He sounds like Buckley (J) to me on Open Up Your Heart.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 16 May 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Frightening thought, Freg. I'll stick with Thom. ;-)

Screamadelica? I dunno, that doesn't actually strike me as a point of comparison...could you spell that out a bit more, M.? I can't put my finger on why that wouldn't be something I'd suggest, so I'd want to know more about why you do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No I don't see the Screamadelica thing either really, and I don't mind Screamadelica.

I have a third person I think he sounds like on Open Up Your Heart, WILL OLDHAM!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 May 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with the Thom York influence on "Open Up Your Heart". And "Heaven" does too remind me of The Pixies circa Surfer Rosa.
He remineds me of Tom Velraine mostly and on the track "Echoes" he sounds like Tom Velraine trieng to imitate John Lydon.

rexJr., Friday, 16 May 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparantly, the Rapture will be signed to either EMI or Universal by the end of next week. Echoes is due around September, and they might yet monkey around with the tracklisting. So don't go making any hasty judgements yet.

Jason J, Friday, 16 May 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

those fuckers! maybe it'll get some promotional muscle behind it at least

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Universal

NoOne (ystrickler), Friday, 16 May 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Not exactly a new development. A major-label deal's been in the works for over a year... that's why they've had no proper high-profile releases, save for the limited-edition vinyl that came out on Output.

I heard that EMI were still in the running, and this was from somebody who really should know. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Jason J, Friday, 16 May 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Screamadelica comparisons: similar groove-orientation, as Jess noted, that gives the dance/rock crossover a strong grounding; the style-grafting is both very conscious but sounds really natural; "I Need Your Love" seems like the ideal of what Primal Scream were aiming for, indie vox/gtr + dirty house groove, I love it; "Open Up Your Heart" reminds me of "Movin' on Up" drained of euphoria (which is why it's a NOW Screamadelica rather than a '91 one); "HOJL" = "Loaded," the brill fusion "we" didn't quite know we were waiting for but knew immediately upon contact "we" had been.

obv a some of this is fairly tenuous but the mood of the record strikes me as very similar to what PS were aiming for. I like about four or five songs on the PS album a lot but it seems to lose direction a lot, and this doesn't.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha typo negative! no, wait, typo positive because I made so goddamned many!)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm...I'm listening to it again now, M., and I'm terribly intrigued by your comparisons but I really can't hear them. They don't sound like, for lack of a better word, natural connections between the songs you describe (and to be fair you say it's tenuous and all). Ultimately I disagree with you in terms of mood. Screamadelica struck me a big messy party with lots of happy drugs but also (whisper it) a greater range and absolutely no angst at all, which I think is crucial. There's no connection between Bobby Gillespie's stoned and zoned celebrations and the Ratpure guy's nervous, wound up fear and release, at least that I can sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't mention the "except all tense and angsty" part upthread, did I? fuck, I meant to. ah well.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(and no, I don't actually expect you to believe that. it's true though)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No, maybe you did! Still, yeah, I don't know. The album sounds so much more obsessively structured and 'clean,' for lack of a better word, than Screamadelica. The song that would most leap to mind is "Don't Fight It, Feel It."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(Er, maybe you did say that upthread rather than expect me to believe it...or something).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I double checked, and I didn't. not a big deal except I could have made my point a lot clearer--probably one of those things I've said alout so much that I figure it'll just make its way into what I type...without my actually having to type it. (kinda like this fucking book!) but I must say, one thing I'm noticing w/a lot of nu-postpunk that I don't think gets remarked on near enough is how close they are in lots of ways to Madchester/indie-dance, only brittler, w/the E-ffect drained out. the Out Hud album is like that a bit, obviously the Rapture strikes me that way...maybe it's just the rock-dance thing that automatically sets those associations off, but I do hear some of it in there.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 16 May 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(don't forget the new !!! single, matos, which is as great as you said...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 May 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A Rapture story: Not too long ago I was at a warehouse style (huge space but not really a warehouse) party....the party is progressing normally, the dj is playing NYC sleaze electro, various substances are being taken openly, there's a koi pond next to where I'm standing...the crowd is fairly young-ish and fucked up but well behaved. There's a line to get in going down several flights of stairs. Everyone is playing it cool and doing more socializing than dancing. Fuck, the wait for the bathroom is long. It's late. All of a sudden HOJL is dropped by the dj and the place just goes nuts. The floor is literally bouncing. I'm standing there completely awe-struck. It's like the song is the catalyst for this surge of energy, people are jumping up and down. It's some weird synergistic musical experience.

The police showed up soon thereafter kicking everyone out. So that tune both made the party and ended it. I ended up losing my friends and cabbing it home alone, but I must have had a smile on my face the whole way.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 17 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No you don't. You evil man.

Okay, so last night -- them headlining, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (grand as always) and the Modern Units (keep an eye out...their own hype is kicking in and is very well deserved, they might have actually had more people there for them last night!) opening. Very good show, varied, which I liked -- a number of the old songs, about half the new album. "Sister Saviour," "I Need Your Love," "Killing," "Heaven," a couple of other newies and The Two Singles What Made Their Name. "HOJL" closed the main set and was major hysteria and hip action and more, and I like the way the guy sings to the side of the mic (and how the bass feller provides good harmony squeals). The fellow what plays keyboards, sax and cowbell (and damn good cowbell at that in terms of throwing himself bodily into the performance) was kewl too. Encore was a blast in that they started with their cover of the Psych Furs' "Dumb Waiters" (why the hell hasn't some emo band covered "All of this and Nothing" by now, I still have to ask) and THEN...an irony-free fist-pumping rock out cover of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part Two." Dude.

And! Mr. Matos might well have been onto something! The song playing over the PA before the band took the stage: "Higher Than the Sun." CONSPIRACY?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 May 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Rapture at Coachella a few weeks back and thought they were just okay (and I do like their stuff). Within an hour of their show, I was over at the dance tent watching Felix da Housecat and he dropped HOJL and it was better than watching the Rapture play it. Strange. There must be a Baudrillardian word for this.

The Ratpure were signed by Gary Gersh's label through Ratpure Records.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

to be nitpicky about it, the rapture will be signed by mercury records (u.k.) with strummer (gary gersh's new endeavor) as the north american partner.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

whad I miss? It's called Strummer? no fucking way. thataway to preserve Joe's legacy- name a major label after him.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My latest Guitar Center spam was a postcard with "SAVINGS CALLING" on it, done exactly like the London Calling album cover. Talk about preserving a legacy... (still better than BADII's take on it)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what legacy? The guy was on majors practically his whole career (that's not a value judgement, just saying that claiming him for something he never claimed for himself is capital-D DUMB).

but maybe I should just get in my jag-you-wahr and jet the fuck outta here.

hstencil, Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Claiming I claimed something for Joe Strummer about something to do with what class of label his records appeared on is Capital F FUCKING RETARDED.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 22 May 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Meaning I just think it's silly that Gary Gersh thought, "Oh gee, I'll do something really nice for Joe, I'll name my label after him." The label could be major, indie, bedroom, world-dominant, with a major distribution deal, or without, I would still think it's silly, esp. so close to his death.

And Joe Strummer's legacy is the music he made with the Clash, his politics, and his late-period stuff w/ the Mescaleros.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 22 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

So I saw 'em last night here in Mtl. Great show. They were terrific--really high energy, very smiley, mr. dancer/saxophone&cowbell fancy-pantser very endearing. Sounds like they played more or less the same set as everywhere else, with a couple minor changes ("Louie Louie" instead of "Rock & Roll Part 2"). The crowd was very excitable and dancy, I was jumping up and down at the front of the stage. A wicked night out, one of the best concerts I've been to in a while (part of this must be attributed to a lot of friends being there & me getting some great news early in the night). Erlend Oye opened, and he was very winning.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone gotten a different/longer versh of 'HOJL' with an alternate intro? 'Cause my mp3 ROCKS.

s1utsky, what next-Anita Baker album covers?

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that now?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Universal, October 14.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

dfa vinyl release on sept.8, god willing. trevor jackson did the artwork - it's sick, especially for the output/dfa stuff.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky, it was a bad joke. Very bad. Every time I tried to download the band I had to put up with tracks from Anita Baker's Rapture LP. And Justin and Kylie live at the Brits.

I still wanna know about the alternate 'HOJL' I downloaded though. Hopefully, it's the album version but probably not.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

was it the Geist rmx?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. The mp3 was subtitled 'Another version' and I have the 12" too.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

On a DFA related note, I just flipped over to CITV and the kid leads on 'Wilmot' are accidentally crossing 'Losing My Edge' with the Streets.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Cosmos (Tom Middleton) remix of HoJL now, it's sort of boompty chicago style, pretty cool.

Looks like this is the cover:

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called Echoes and their faces are echoing!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a pretty good cover, all things considered.

better daft punk/trevor jackson stylee than more distressed photocopy font.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What was that fake-broken-typewriter font called again?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, flightatdusk. I don't have the sampler for one thing.

That cover is cool, lots better than the Playgroup one too. It's got the 'moved-on-up-ness' of Discovery's cover in relation to Homework's-and mo' props for using their actual faces.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 4 August 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
I caught the band at Fopp on Earlham St. last night. They were an hour late but it was more or less worth it. They played 'Out Of The Races', 'Sister Saviour' and 'HOJL' then signed copies of the single (me: the 12", the 7" and a poster the staff gave me for free). For the first time in ever, I actually got nevous-chatty talking to a band. WTF up with that? I even forgot to ask them about the damn mp3! They are all pretty cool though, I would've tried to blag my way to the boat party tonight but the queue etc.

Trevor Jackson was also there and I told him I found an old Brotherhood 12" in a quid bin. "Always sad when they end up there", he said, probably fuming inside. I told him I'd been listening to Playgroup a lot over the weekend (I was trying to figure out where that duff reggae number fit into the scheme of things and I was mostly listening to 'Bring It On', 'Medicine Man' and 'Too Much'). "You're a madman", he told me before leaving.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The reggae one is fucking great dude!

I saw the Rapture at Tribal Gathering's big acid house warehouse thing in Manchester on Saturday and they blew my mind. They were in a small backroom with graffiti everywhere and sweat dripping off the roof playing to a crowd which was really jumped up, not least after the DJ before them played Go and then Hardtrance Experience.

Anyway they really gave it everything and seemed to enjoy it so much, the singer was screaming and then stage dived, it really felt like a seminal moment of the year, I enjoyed them as much as anything else this year, and I am firmly a dance fan.

Sister Saviour is a dementedly good record.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone else feel sad to be letting them go?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Go where? The stratosphere?

I would've been at Tribal too, but I couldn't afford to return to a place I semi-hate, spiritually and financially.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah go big, leave the muso zone.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

They can handle it. They were working the crowd just so back in May when I saw them, bring on the bigger venues and let all enjoy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it was cool having them as the little secret but god can they handle it. They are going to be so popular, I am now convinced.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Barima, i was there last nite too! it rocked. so much better than the glastonbury gig, not an outdoors band at all! look, i even wrote about it in my group blog...it's all in your mind

they should be on top of the pops, daytime radio 1, radio 2, the works, let nothing hold them back!

also got tickets to the gig at Heaven on sept.30th...

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh fuck i mean it's all in your mind

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing is, we need a band like the Rapture to be popular in the hope that pop will pay attention to an entire genre besides hip hop and r'n'b (as far as I could tell for example, dancehall blowing up this year actually amounts to Sean Paul and 'Diwali' blowing up) and because I want the DFA to achieve their 'engagement with pop culture' dreams.

Pete, I was hoping to find out if anyone here would go but I found out too late for a message. I was the only black person there if that helps. And yeah, they are grebt indoors.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh damn.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the last pink single was a bit dfa, a tiny bit. er was it?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounded like the Fantasma-era Cornelius record Beck desperately wanted to make (cf. 'Milk and Honey' and in the same way the meat of that rekkid wanted to do Prince).

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 28 August 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

barima, i think i saw you talking to luke at the signing table. i was in a black top/white earrings, standing with trevor for much of the event.
if you describe how the mp3 sounds a bit more, i might be able to i.d. it for you.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i have three distinct versions:

the echoes version
the insound version
the 12" a-side single version

(then the mixes:)
the 12" b-side morgan geist mix
the musik disco punk version
the playgroup dj kicks version
the colette no 4 version

i think i know the version that barima is talking about though... it's the insound tour support EP version.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 28 August 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Was the Cosmos one for the UK release or something? The Geist mix is magic.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 August 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

how different are the non-remix versions?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the last pink single was a bit dfa

Heh, DFA's the label, innit?

hstencil, Thursday, 28 August 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get it!

The non-remix version I heard had tinnier higher pitched percussion after the "shakedooooown" part, that's as much difference as I noted.

I am enjoying the Cosmos remix alot, it's not better than the original and there's not alot of point to remixing HOTJL but it's still cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 August 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey lauren, think I remember you too. I'm away from the mp3 right now, people, but gygax seems to be closest to an ID. Basically, this version is 5.58 mins long, the guitar riffs that sound a little like rave synth stabs form the intro then carry on as a drumbeat (actual, not programmed) comes in 4 or 8 bars later (can't really remember) then the other elements (cowbell, bass riff etc) come in-I think the new intro and a slightly different mix are what makes this a new one. I think the housey breakbeat is either fairly muted or doesn't appear b/c I can't fully remember it being there.

I wasn't so into the remixes-I think Geist just about covered it all, though Middleton gave a good stab.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 29 August 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney supposedly recorded something w/James Murphy but "her label wouldn't let her release it" though that's probably completely made up

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's true - britney did go into the studio with james and tim for an afternoon.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

barima-

that is the version from the insound tour support EP.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard the ends remix of "killing"? that and alabama sunshine are my two current rapture favorites.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

who is "the rapture"?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one who thinks "Like I Love You" is the bizzaro HOJL?

fcussen (Burger), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i say we start calling them the ratpure anyway.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Saturday, 30 August 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard the ends remix of "killing"?

When you say the ends, are you refferring to "are you really from the ends" ends?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Saturday, 30 August 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yup.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mystery solved.

I'm gonna give the 'Killing' rmx another listen. There was some potential buffness there, but why it ain't on vinyl anyway mystifies.

Barima (Barima), Saturday, 30 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh. Anyone from the States managed to register on the UK site (to hear the full tracks)?

It's stuck on "processing" permanenty.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 31 August 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Gang of Four - Check.
A Certain Ration - Check.
One Step Beyond - Hang on, who put that in here?

mark grout, Monday, 1 September 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't for the life of me like the Rapture. I sort of assumed I would (but they are postpunky! but they have foxy percussion!), that I was just waiting for my love for them to kick in, a few more listens to HOJL and 'out of the races...' and it would All Make Sense. Caught them at Reading and blamed my lack of interest on the fact that I ws half-asleep at the time; caught them at the FOPP instore and realised that no, really, they just do not appeal. Except 'I need your love', is it called? With the keyboards: yes.

They just seem to have so many songs based on the same, rather staid, four-four tempo, with negligible verses above and fairly basic rhythms below. I guess it doesn't help that I think the singer's weak (perhaps there are two? the yelpy one and the one I barely notice?) and am not too fond of the DFA's production. But I'm left still feeling like I'm missing out on something: I should by rights like them and yet I can't work out what's likeable about them at all.

cis (cis), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

have you heard the album yet?

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(if not, reserve judgement.)

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But, but, I don't want to get the album if I'm not going to like it!

cis (cis), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Then wait patiently.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ok i heard the album and i think the programming is cheesy the vocals are slightly forced and one song sounds just like a david bowie song other then that its pretty good

chaki (chaki), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't really liked them that much on record, or at least not compared to how much I like them in a hyped up club gig setting. I've got a ticket to see them again next month yay. I haven't heard the new album yet.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But the Bowie song is great, chaki!!

I'm relatively young, so this is the first time I've ever really had the "if I wanted ______ I'd just listen to ______". I mean, I like the new album, but I never feel the need to listen to it beyond "House of Jealous Lovers", "Killing" and "Open Up Your Heart" when i'm really in the mood. The feeling's new to me, so I don't quite know how to articulate it yet, but... Dude, it's just like gang of 4 (or whatever)!!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That being said, I think HOJL is the best/most important indie single of the decade so far. There was a local gig in my small town where my brother's dancey math punk band played after some shitty local punk/hardcore bands, and they picked the music played in between sets (which is to say my brother played the dance-punk stuff i recommended him - james chance, radio 4, lcd soundsystem, etc.) The first time HOJL came on most of them reacted "what is this thump thump shit?" until the guitar/vocals came in. The CD cycled a couple times that night and by the end they were all dancing and singing along -- all these punk/emo/hardcore kids. Point being: it really did change some minds, and as someone who's been trying to start a disco band with all the wrong people for years now, that means a lot to me.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

N was it a small club?

Cos I saw them in a tiny room at Tribal Gathering and they were the best rock act I've ever seen in my life, in whatever sense they're a rock act. It was psychotic, they looked the part more than anyone I've ever seen, felt like the beginning of an era.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it was at Optimo (sub club). So not tiny, but the shape and nature of the place made it feel smaller. I worry that it won't be nearly as good at the QMU.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

LCD Soundsystem a month or so later was even better, if anything.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 1 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to leave like now so I'm only going to say: Cher.

E (ebb), Monday, 1 September 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

As in, I'd just giddily downloaded all of Echoes and then talked to a friend who'd just seen them and he was all "Cher." Of all the comparisons, it's the faintest, but it sticks, somehow, and it's not Sonny-and-Cher Cher or Mask Cher or even asspants Cher but autotuned "Do you buh-leeee-uvvvvv in life after love" Cher that I imagine covering "Olio" or "Sister Savior" or "I Need Your Love" while the band backs her, kinda like when Puffy and Sting did the VMAs that one year, except reverse.

E. (ebb), Monday, 1 September 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone posted the video yet?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 5 September 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nice video.

hstencil, Friday, 5 September 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect I may have been wrong about them. Granted, they were a load of horrible cacophonous squawking at Glasto, but on first listening the album is GREBT*.

Well, the first half of the album, at any rate. I don't know about the 2nd half, because I haven't been able to stop playing I Need Your Love. Also, I really didn't expect Open Up Your Heart... it's gorgeous.

*This sentence was bought to you by the Campaign For The Rehabilitation of Past-It ILX Slang

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt I knew you'd see sense.

I am kind of burnt out on the album cos I played it to death when I got it. That said I'd go and see them live in a second. Many many more times. Are you sure they didn't fall victim to the Sunday Glasto effect Matt?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard em but I love the name.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 8 September 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

did this hit stores today or what?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that video is like genetically engineered to fit the ratpure to a t; you could reconstitute the band cargo-cult style just from looking at it.

etc, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

u.k. release was today. u.s. cd release is october 21, but dfa is putting out the vinyl on sept. 30th.
i just heard the blackstrobe remix of 'sister saviour.' it is totally radical.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to this four times today. it still sounds good, if less flattening than in that first week or so.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i could listen to the same album 4 times in one day(altho i've come close with Kish Kash lately), but i just wanna add that i listened to 'Sister Saviour' whilst coming back from the FAP last night and it was one of THOSE moments - great great track

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to other stuff in between each time.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think i could listen to the same album 4 times in one day

Back when I still obsessed over music, I once put Rumours on ALL DAY LONG (until the stereo passed out).

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

black strobe mix of sister saviour!! why do you mock me!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine them turning the opening guitars into Black Strobe trademark French chime noises like in the Number One remix.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

When maxinquaye first came out i don't think it came off my turntable for about 2 weeks.

Listening to Echoes more and more now too - i think it's improving with each listen. HOJL now no longer sounds like the central track - the quieter moments. Open up your heart, colour of spring and Infatuation anre now really the stand out tracks for me.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant The Coming of Spring, of course!

colin o'hara (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What was that fake-broken-typewriter font called again?

Trixie.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i see shades of b3ta in the HOJL video: the kittens in the kitten factory, the duck-skull-head man shooting lasers beams at tanks from his eyes

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan, you're not far off the mark. they've turned it into a massive industro-synth track. the vocals are there, but that's about it.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

eh...it takes a lot to redeem indie-screech vocals for me, and that beat just isn't doing it...the cowbells are a nice touch, though.

I'd say that that the vox handicap their chances of mainstread success, but Jack White made that awful school of singing safe for radio, so who knows.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

manstread = mainstream

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If the album is at a special introducory price I might buy it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't universal going cheap across the board now?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 September 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't know they were on universal. and I don't know if that means it's gonna be under ten bucks (Which this would need to be).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 15 September 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

you can get it for 9 pounds inc shipping from www.cdwow.com

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Anthony, unplug yer ears! The painful screech of The Rapture is about 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more appealing than the testicleless whine of Limp Bizkit.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 September 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

my copy of this turned up in the mail today and it's a "special edition". what's different to the regular version? is it just a different coloured cover like the Pulp special edition?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm... Bits of it I really like but I'm not convinced overall. Is it a dancefloor-filling-set or is it an artistic statement because it appears to be trying to be both at certain stages and not fully managing to emerge on the other side as either.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Have heard the album, or most of it: they would be fantastic, except the singer is useless. He even ruins my enjoyment of I Need Your Love, which you wouldn't think possible - this perfect intro, and then that ungodly yowl, and ugh. I envy everyone who isn't hyper-sensitive to tuneless yelpy vocals.

cis (cis), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but if they had a "good singer" on I Need Your Love it wouldn't be too far off regular house music.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

...and what's wrong with that?

cis (cis), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

come on who likes house music!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You do, Ronan.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

so nobody knows the answer to my question then?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

They do, they're just not telling you.

cis (cis), Monday, 15 September 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I know I do! I checked.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 September 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm seeing them on the 30th at Heaven. now i just need a hot date to accompany me...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 September 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the special edition should have a code or something that allows you to access special stuff on the website: remixes, different versions of tracks, a bunch of dv live footage, yadda yadda. except the microsite's not finished yet, because people are lazy.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 15 September 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I envy everyone who isn't hyper-sensitive to tuneless yelpy vocals.

This has made my day.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 September 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"Open Up Your Heart" should be elsewhere on the album. Or on another album. I like it, but not in between "Heaven" and "I Need Your Love"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 15 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it! I played it twice in a row, which I never do. Singer isn't so great, but it doesn't really bother me.

their "Silent Morning" is not as good as the freestyle track of the same name by Noel.

is "Heaven" as good as the Talking Heads track by the same name?

is the album as good as the gogogoairheart album?

*cough*

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a different Heaven but it's also quite good. They already had a ballad on the album.

My friend who has the gogogoairheart album says there's only one good song! I've only heard one song from it but I agree that there is at least one good song

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If I don't, I might go to a bar that's playing all Smiths/Morrissey records all night long. Those are my choices.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

RATPURE!!!!

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc you should go see them, it probably would be a lot more fun than listening to Smiths records all night long (whaddaya depressed or something?). Plus they're playing with VHS or Beta?, old Louisville friends of mine who are fun and disco-y, if you like that sorta thing.

chopped liver, Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I think you're right. I've been in a dancey mood lately. Only as of right now, I know people who are going to the Smiths thing (it's at Club Foot), and I don't know anyone who's going to the Rapture. Time to make some phone calls, maybe.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Go see them, definitely dude, it's a wild night out. Really I cannot recommend it enough.

I can't find that Black Strobe remix of Sister Saviour on Slsk but I try on.

Ok, I'm slow obv. Because see, I'm kinda short so I'm usually the one grousing; I projected onto jess' statement.

Anyway, I was thinking of going to that Chicago show tonight but I've already been in that shithole (the Metro) once this week, and I realized I've only heard "House of Jealous Lovers" and I only really wanted to hang out for Tommie Sunshine's dj set afterwards anyway. Plus I have no $$.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

is the album as good as the gogogoairheart album?

there are no DFA tracks on the gogogo so obviously nearly every track on the rapture album blows the exittheuxa out of the water. taken on it's own terms, however, i think the gogogo album is great. they just lack a deadly-efficient dance moves. i have friends who claim "dancepunk" and like the rapture but think "beat connection" is just plain stupid; i'd probably recommend the gogogo album to those friends.

Fabtabulous! Echoes is an absolute dance-rock classic!

"Open Up Your Heart" still sucks, though.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i still like "open up your heart".

i really feel like this album is one of the few hypehypehyped albums (wilco, interpol (never liked that one), etc) of the past few years thats survived some time for me.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

HOJL = single of the decade.

The album's flawed but it's still pretty fabulous. From the new songs I've heard, the next one probably isn't going to be as good and they'll probably never come close to matching HOJL, but it'll still be a damn fun album.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody say something about gogogo airheart? I like the rapture but gogogo does kick their asses, a lot bit. I don't think this is a thread about gogogo airheart kicking rapture ass though.

Brandon Biondo (twinkiebots), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

judging by the live shows the new one will be alot better, at least that's my opinion. each show I've seen over the last year has been a little better and more developed.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

question: i really like Echoes, but is any of their earlier stuff worth getting? was the dfa production thing important to Echoes?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

was the dfa production thing important to Echoes?

Yes, BUT the DFA also did the Sub Pop EP and that sounds little like Echoes does.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out of the races and on to the tracks" (the track itself) is definately worth getting.

Also i Love "open up your heart" but i couldnt care less about "Sister Saviour"

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you have to hurt me like this? Does it give you pleasure?

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The early Mirror EP is pretty good. Not dissimilar to a good Gogogoairheart record.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody else on here likes Gogogoairheart!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i think.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one, Tim.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the last song on the subpop ep is pretty good too, i have no idea what it's called, it reminds me of thin white rope meets ramblin' jack elliot with missy elliot beatboxing over it.

gogogoairheart is fine, i take it adaml has an aversion to the search function (as do a few of the other Scots on ILX).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

From my friend Mike (a conversation he had at a party last week):
---

Me: Yeah, I use to play drums about ten years ago in Detroit--.

Dude: What was your band?

Me: I was in the Catfish. Not that alternative band, but an old school punk band. We never put out a record or played outside of the city.

Dude: That’s what I do, play drums.

Me: What’s your band?

Dude: The Rapture.

Me: No Really, what’s your band?

Dude: The Rapture.

Me: You’re in The Rapture?

Dude: Yeah.

Me: Okay, be honest with me. How much do you hate “House of Jealous Lovers?”

Dude: No, I like that song.

Me: Come on, is there part of you that’s all, “Goddamn, this song again,” when you’re playing out?

Dude: No, no, I like playing that live. Like, I look forward to it.

Ask and ye shall receive.

For Immediate Release: 23/05/11

New York, NY: The Rapture have announced the release details for their long awaited third album ‘InThe Grace Of Your Love’ on September 5th in the UK & September 6th in the US through DFA Records.

The release of ‘In The Grace Of Your Love’ marks the dawn of a new chapter in the bands history and a welcome return to DFA Records family, having re-signed with the label that released some of their most acclaimed early singles, and whose founders James Murphy & Tim Goldsworthy produced their debut album ‘Echoes’.

Together with French producer Phillipe Zdar (Phoenix, Beastie Boys, Chromeo) they have crafted and shaped a bold & euphoric album that sounds definitively & distinctly like The Rapture and no one else. Here through the course of its eleven tracks, you can immerse yourself as waves of lyrical optimism & introspection crash between angular guitars & pulsing synthesizers, pounding drums & into sweet rhythmical lullabies. This is the sound of The Rapture re-engaged and revitalized with a voice as clear as they ever had.

The full tracklisting is as follows:

In The Grace Of Your Love

1) Sail Away

2) Miss You

3) Blue Bird

4) Come Back to Me

5) In the Grace of Your Love

6) Never Gonna Die Again

7) Roller Coaster

8) Children

9) Can You Find a Way?

10) How Deep Is Your Love?

11) It Takes Time to Be a Man

In The Grace Of Your Love was recorded at Motorbass, Paris and Gary's Electric in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Methods are detailed for isolating highly pure populations of spermatogonial stem cells from primary cultures of testis cells prepared from 22- to 24-day-old rats. The procedure is based on the principle that testicular somatic cells bind tightly to plastic and collagen matrices when cultured in serum-containing medium, whereas spermatogonia and spermatocytes do not bind to plastic or collagen when cultured in serum-containing medium. The collagen-non-binding testis cells obtained using these procedures are thus approx. 97% pure spermatogenic cells. Stem spermatogonia are then easily isolated from the purified spermatogenic population during a short incubation step in culture on laminin matrix. The spermatogenic cells that bind to laminin are more than 90% undifferentiated, type A spermatogonia and are greatly enriched in genetically modifiable stem cells that can develop into functional spermatozoa. This method does not require flow cytometry and can also be applied to obtain enriched cultures of mouse spermatogonial stem cells. The isolated spermatogonia provide a highly potent and effective source of stem cells that have been used to initiate in vitro and in vivo culture studies on spermatogenesis.

Brilliant read, thx. Never cared that much about Rapture but the codependency childhood story really resonates. Glad to see he made it to the other side

yeah same. loved some of their singles but not really a fan of the albums. that was an awesome interview though. cool to see a musician so into being a Dad. also the stuff re: James Murphy matches up with what I've heard about him.

Cool to hear that these guys have reunited since that interview. Pretty much with frogbs that their best moments are excellent, even if the albums are patchy

saw them last night. still one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Like most bands, they should never play a space larger than where I saw them last night. They were amazing, the crowd lost their shit, the various phases/sounds they've played with blended great, and even stuff that I like the least on the albums sounded totally killer live and loud. Amazing energy, great show.

the Ratpure at Caesar Chavez Student Center -- or the Rapture at Cesar Chavez Student Center?

I was in grad school there at the time, did not see this.
