when beyonce dies tomorrow it's def gonna be from natural causes and not because one of her back up dancers hit her with a night stick

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

Taylor Swift, whom I adore, is insufferable in these industry shindigs.

I liked the fascist backup dancers

Mordy, Monday, 1 February 2010 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not watching this, but I am curious: Will they enlist Kanye to hand off best _______ of the year to Taylor Swift, complete w/ tear-soaked apology and validation of her greatness? That is a calculated media event I would like to see!

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Monday, 1 February 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

we don't need no fascist grammy thang.

Blue Fucks Like Ben Nelson (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 February 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

kanye is banned from show. that's what all the stormtroopers are for.

scott seward, Monday, 1 February 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Monday, 1 February 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

Your demographic, old man.

Why is Pink in a sling twisting around in the air? This is insane.

Mordy, Monday, 1 February 2010 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

ok so clearly she needs to develop a whole touring aerial show out of all this stuff. it's like the only thing she does anymore.

overcame a quite frankly ridiculous name for a white country band to become a song i dig a lot.

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 1 February 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

If I were Lady Antebellum I'd sue the sound engineer. This should blast like classic Fleetwood Mac, yet it sounds muffled.

Blue Fucks Like Ben Nelson (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 February 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

how have we not had a 1,500-post thread about the cultural signifiers bound up in "lady antebellum"?

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 1 February 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

most of their songs are about false memories, so the name makes sense.

Blue Fucks Like Ben Nelson (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 February 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

beautiful song but you need an extremely different rhythm section if you want to sound like classic fleetwood mac. nothing the sound engineer can do about that.

Hard Rock Performance: AC/DC for "War Machine", over Alice In Chains, Linkin Park, Metallica and Nickelback.

A really good choice; it's one of the best songs on Black Ice and all the other nominated tracks sucked.

worst lip-sync (?) ever was Jamie Foxx "Blame It"*

*hard to tell cuz i heard him sing a couple lines and it sounded awful so either the producers turned him off or he just gave up and decided to lip-sync it... also t-pain wasn't even holding his mic to his mouth during his parts.

how hard is it to sing a song with 1 note and is vocoded to death?

Btw it is kind of amazing how pompous and bombastic "Earth Song" is and how it manages to be fucking fantastic regardless.

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

I can get behind the pompous spectacle part, but the only moment I thought was anywhere close to fantastic was Maxwell. It's hard to dislike Taylor Swift since she's so cute and earnest. But as she warbles off key I can't not be bugged by the thought of all southern, religious right-wingers holding her as an example of the good girl next door. Maybe I'll like her better when she grows up and breaks free of that role.

I used to completely ignore the Grammys since it was just a grotesque spectacle that merely focused on artists economic impact on the industry rather than the music. Now that I can DVR and skip through the painful stuff, I figured anything that at least pretends to be about music can't be all bad. But speaking of industry giants, I don't get how AC/DC, one of the biggest selling bands in the history of music, were shut out from getting their award on-screen, let alone not performing.

this is otm in a bunch of ways & it was SO great to watch Smokey really going for it - I don't care whether he succeeds or not, he's one of the greatest artists of the 20th century imo but I always feel like he went completely adrift at some point & I like to imagine that he's going to sort of rise from sleep one day and go "you know what I want to do again? outshine fucking everyboy"

yo capn save-a-swift i'm just asking for "tolerably." every time she tries to sing i think "why does no one help that poor girl."

it was funny a couple years back when she was doing her "look y'all i've got an acoustic guitar and i'm covering beyoncé" schtick but at this point a little goddamn respect for the audience wouldn't be too much to ask. she's got a team of professionals and someone needs to get on that.

i can't really tell what taylor's deal is, tbh. i mean, obviously in the studio she's autotuned up the wazoo (true: her wazoo is actually autotuned), but if you read her bio it's all, she went this place that place and another place to sing for people. she was supposedly some local karaoke star. so yeah, how can she not get at least on key?

velko, Monday, 1 February 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

I would guess that Swift's problem has more to do with singing before an audience. I haven't heard her records & so can't vouch for whether they're Melodyning her on every note but presumably one tries to avoid signing people who won't be able to deliver the goods live, like, ever.

The idea that people are being nitpicking perfectionists about Swift's singing is lol central, it's hardly muso posturing to say "hey, that was the wrong note...that one too, immediately after it...hey wait that was a whole verse of the wrong notes"

i wish she sang better live too, not arguing there. but dan to say she doesn't deserve album of the year (lol like anyone 'deserves' this humor me here) because she can't sing live is retarded - i've got issues with her singing voice too, even on record a little, but it's def not a minus and her songwriting and personality and the production have always been the major (at least critical) selling points. it's an award for album of the year, and since it's not a live album it has nothing to do with her singing live

wtf lebron, that chick doesn't need a gatorade bath (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)
