step in the name of love

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

approve of concept

first thought was "feelin on yo booty" which i just loooove, then i noticed kellz' features were here too so now i can't decide between that and "laundromat", with "go getta" as a surprise third contender

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

"i'm a flirt" is gonna win this

i'm voting for 'feelin on yo booty'

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Fiesta" (Remix) (with Jay-Z and Boo & Gotti)
"Step in the Name of Love"
"Thoia Thoing"

one of these IMO

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

i would've voted for 'step in the name of love' but i like the remix so better -- "thoia thoing" is dope yeah

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

i have a spot for his big, sappy ballads - "u saved me" & "world's greatest" etc

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

actually i change my mind, i believe i can fly

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

"happy people" is also amazing -- it would be nice if half of these songs just didn't exist

my favorite feature is "we thuggin"

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

The "Step in the Name of Love" single and video were for the remix tho, right?

poll is worthless cuz OP confuses "Ignition" with "Ignition (remix)", two very distinct and different songs imo.

my challops "ignition" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "ignition (remix)"

yeah i love love love the original "Ignition" but if I made that the option and not the remix I think it would just confuse matters and a lot of people would vote for it thinking of the remix

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Step in the Name of Love (Remix) is too damn good, but driving around Chicago the summer Trapped was coming out, waiting for WGCI to play the next part, and listening to people call in and talk about it is for sure one of my favorite music experiences of the decade. So I dunno.

maciej recognizing trill, Monday, 1 February 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah same here -- kinda bitter about the direction "Trapped" took both artistically and in terms of public reception, but for a minute it was so exciting

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

*food* stains, *dirty* drawes!

jordan otm about "the world's greatest" btw

there was a great soca remix of "i'm a flirt" but it's not on youtube ;_;

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

"Laundromat" is so perfect that I honestly have no idea if it could be improved if the female parts were sung by a decent vocalist (or even someone who didn't pronounce the title like "laundrymat")

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

starting to get optimistic that this will get more votes than R. KELLY 2003 POLL or R. KELLY 2007 POLL :)

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

I think my second-tier gut picks are "Thoia Thoing" and, umm, "The World's Greatest"

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

If it's the remix, then "In the Kitchen," hands down. But I love about 90% of the songs in this poll.

talrose, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

Was the Neva Like This Remix of "So Sexy" every released as a proper single? Because that might be second place.

talrose, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

it was! i totally forgot about that and should've made it an option. really i should've had an 'other' option anyway.

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

i would say either/or with the "In the Kitchen" original and remix, but then i love them both

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

R. Kelly's the type of artist that could make half of his albums singles, yet his albums are usually about 25% garbage, unfortunately. (50% incredible, 25% good, 25% terrible).

For instance, of all the tracks on Double Up, I have no idea why the horrendous "Rock Star" was released as a single.

talrose, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:51 (fifteen years ago)

yeah..."Hook It Up" would've been such an awesome single

I don't wear white jeans like the tight boys (some dude), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, it's usually less than that. More like 15% of the album ends up being terrible.

talrose, Monday, 1 February 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

On Unfinished Business, both "Feelin' On Your Stereo" and "Pretty Girls" could have been singles.

i have a spot for his big, sappy ballads - "u saved me" & "world's greatest" etc

cosign, these are my favorites. I Wish Remix (to all the homies that we lost) is my favorite FAVORITE, some of the saddest best stuff ever ("Why'd you have to get hit?/Where was I? What time was it?") & "U Saved Me" the first time I heard it on the radio fucked me up so bad I almost had to pull over. I think "the World's Greatest" is such a wonderful song & that probably gets my vote here.

nah, I'd top-ten Snake

"like two gorillas in the JUUUUUUUUUUNGLE.... making love"

see also cockfarmer fanbases (sic), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)

Am I the only one who loves "Snake"?

No. But I wouldn't top 10 it. To wit:

"In the Kitchen (Remix)"
"Happy People"
"Step In the Name of Love (Remix)"
"I'm a Flirt (Remix)"
"So Sexy (Neva Like This Remix)"
"I Wish"
"Feelin' On Yo Booty (Remix)''
"Laundromat"
"U Saved Me"
"Trapped In the Closet"

And album tracks would make the list even wilder: "Sex Planet," "The Zoo," "Real Talk," "Leave a Message," "I Love the DJ," "Happy Summertime," "Chocolate Factory," "Imagine That," "Be My #2," "Bangin' the Headboard," "I Like Love."

"Contagious" (The Isley Brothers featuring R. Kelly & Chante Moore)

yeah i really apologize for this -- i LOVE "Woman's Threat" and kept looking at the list of TP2 singles on wiki thinking "that's really short, I know that album had a ton of singles" but since that stuff is kinda on the borderline w/ the 90s i didn't think of that song in particular being missing

sicker than your vag (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

btw the list at the top of this thread will be exhibit A if any of you the-dream stans ever gets out of line enough to suggest that little homey has even half as many jams as his idol

sicker than your vag (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

Naw, he doesn't. He is a lot more focused than his idol, though.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

not sure if i want to agree or parse the meaning of "focused" here

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

I think it just means The-Dream is never going to do something like "Trapped In The Closet"...?

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

you're saying it doesn't take focus to write an intricately plotted 22-part story song?

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really see it as a "song" as much as a "cry for help" but I don't want to have that argument again.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

fair enough I just don't think that's a good example to point out of him not being "focused"

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Probably; I have never seen/heard the whole thing so I should have left it alone.

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

oh god I gave up somewhere after the first 12 chapters, after being pretty excited about the first 5, whole thing kinda depressing to think about now

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, that was vague. I just meant he has a higher jam-to-nonjam ratio, but of course R. Kelly's inconsistent prolifacy is part of his appeal. To interpret the word "focused" differently, R.'s compositions tend to be more focused than Terius', but the latter's compulsively sprawling arrangements are part of his own appeal, so no real value judgements to be drawn.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

Depends if we're talking about as songwriters or performers, I think. The-Dream's solo material is pretty consistent but his stuff as a writer varies pretty wildly.

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

if love king is as good as 'love/hate' & 'love vs money' & he actually stops making solo albums, you could make a good argument that his discography is 'better' than kelly's

he won't have the sheer number of songs, but yeah he also won't have the sheer number of stinkbombs, provided that dream doesn't make that album w/ kanye

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, yes, in practice i agree with you al, but i'm talking rigid semantic argument here -- nerd shit with rules, like... or else my #1 vote in p&j would've been "Gucci Mane - Mix CD That I Made So I Could Listen in My Car" cuz that's really my favorite album of 09 and the one i listened to most

big hoos state of mind (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not saying a cherrypicked R. Kelly mix is a better album than The-Dream's albums -- I'm saying he has like 50 songs that are on par with or better than anything on his albums

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

i thought j0rdan invoking the ghost of kanye present was a dig @ wotm but maybe it wasnt

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

no there were rumors about a full-on dream/kanye collab album. that said besides "let me see the booty," "walkin on the moon" is my least favorite song on LVM, tho i still like it a lot

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

I mean I get that The-Dream is on some level a more album-oriented artist than R. (although it's definitely arguable that Chocolate Factory or Twelve Play is better than his albums, it's not like every album he's made is a poorly sequenced mess), but I don't think the hit-to-miss ratio is actually that different.

PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

Those strings, and the intro in general... too good.

That version of "4th Quarter" was actually pretty sweet.

i think missy is probably the correct answer

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

half her top-tier singles were in the 90s tho...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

i love her post- miss... e singles

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

are her albums too good to be considered a singles artist of the decade or does it not matter?

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

her under construction singles are awesome, it's after that it gets a little dodgy (though i don't reeeaally mind "pass that dutch").

beyoncé? rihanna?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

hate so many beyonce singles, rihanna is up there

also chris brown

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

chris might be top 5 for me

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

missy and chris brown imo shouldn't be in the conversation because each only really had hits in 1/2 of the decade. usher's 00s catalog is kinda short, long breaks in between. kells had consistent classics and quality cuts throughout the whole 10 years. t.i. and luda are arguable, although luda has had loooong fallow periods.

Robert Altbro (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i think t.i. > luda

& usher def has the 'quality' over 'quantity' thing

this is funny to me because i hate the first 3 sasha fierce singles but love the last 5 (including "halo" and "sweet dreams" and "video phone").

Robert Altbro (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:07 (fifteen years ago)

as is obvious at this point i only find "single ladies" and "ego" redeemable -- i like "video phone" a lot and wish they would've released it earlier & i don't like the rmx as much

vincent gallogina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:12 (fifteen years ago)

gaga's part on "video phone," bad as it is, doesn't take up as much of its runtime as kanye's horrible droning "ego" verse, and i don't really let either ruin the song for me

Battlestar Homoremixica (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:14 (fifteen years ago)

anyway "sweet dreams" is pretty killer imo, don't know what you could have against that even given your tedder vendetta getting in the way of "halo"

Battlestar Homoremixica (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:14 (fifteen years ago)

i've never heard the kanye remix, even when i made the poll about kanye's guest verses -- everyone spoke so ill of it that i decided to not even see what the fuss was about

vincent gallogina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:15 (fifteen years ago)

haha, yeah idk, i just kind of dislike the melody in the chorus idk. i have no real defensible reason.

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:34 (fifteen years ago)

i totally agree (not counting "No Air"), but it's Chinatown for me as far as people thinking he's some kind of amazing singles artist -- iirc even Dom was some kind of crazy CB booster

Battlestar Homoremixica (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:38 (fifteen years ago)

not really one to listen to lyrics but that part on 'u saved me' where he claims god saved the dude from cancer really grates on me

jesus is radric (The Reverend), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

i forgot about "no air too, & i think he's really key to that song

vincent gallogina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

ugh the idea of CB's singles catalog standing up the R. Kelly list on this thread. sickening.

Battlestar Homoremixica (some dude), Monday, 8 February 2010 07:53 (fifteen years ago)

just for the record, i would not put the breezy collection in the top 5, most likely the outer reaches of the top 10

More Poll Fail:

"Bump n' Grind" is a song written, produced and performed by R&B musician R. Kelly. It was the second single released from his first solo album 12 Play in 1994. The track became Kelly's only number one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (temporarily interrupting the six-week run of Ace of Base's "The Sign") as a solo artist, and it also spent twelve weeks at number one on the U.S. Hot R&B Songs chart, becoming the longest-running number-one U.S. R&B single at that time. The song also reached number eight in the UK charts, following the massive success of his previous single, "She's Got That Vibe" (which was actually a re-release).

The song is featured in the movies Without A Paddle and The Wackness.

In 2008, it was featured in "Grand Theft Auto IV's" fictional Soul/R&B radio station The Vibe 98.8.
