Press guff just now sent around:
The 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival celebrates its fifth anniversary this year at Chicago’s Union Park, on Friday, July 16 - Sunday, July 18. This three-day event will once again showcase a variety of cutting-edge, global performers on three stages in one of the most comfortable and positive festival environments in the country, all brought to fans at a fraction of the price of any other nationally renowned music festival. In previous years, the Pitchfork Music Festival has provided attendees the opportunity to see performances by some of the world’s most innovative and flourishing young acts, often acting as a barometer for what will be popular in the coming years. Over the years artists including Animal Collective, Girl Talk, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird, Owen Pallett, The National, The Antlers, Yeasayer, amongst many others, have been invited to perform at burgeoning moments in their careers. The festival has also presented a diverse mix of internationally renowned and beloved acts, such as The Flaming Lips, The Jesus Lizard, Spoon, Yoko Ono, Public Enemy, Sonic Youth, Tortoise, Dinosaur Jr., Cat Power, Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo, Slint, Os Mutantes and Iron & Wine. An independently run, consistently sold-out event, the Pitchfork Music Festival attracts 50,000 fans of all ages from 45 states and 11 countries. In addition to presenting an outstanding musical line-up at a reasonable price, the festival also offers a vast array of other activities for attendees to enjoy. With 50 individual vendors, as well as specialty fairs, the fest not only supports local businesses and the local economy, but also promotes the Chicago arts community as a whole. Tickets for the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival will be on sale Friday, February 5th, with single-day tickets for $40 and three-day passes for $90. The first round of bands will be announced on Friday, February 5th as well. Two-day passes will not be available for purchase. This year, Friday’s performances will begin earlier to present fans with a longer first day of music. Tickets can be purchased at www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com.

At least five good reasons there not to go. Thanks for convincing me Ned!

Ned, I'm confused by your interest here.
― Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 5 February 2010 13:35 (sixteen years ago)
(Also by the fact that you're up at the ass-crack of dawn.)
so is Modest Mouse going to do the usual Friday night thing where they play a "classic album" in full? I'd vote for "The Lonesome Crowded West" but it'll probably be "Moon and Antarctica" huh.
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 5 February 2010 13:36 (sixteen years ago)
The fact that Friday is a longer day of music makes me think that that might not happen this year.
― Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 5 February 2010 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
I'm on the PR list for this thing and figured others would be interested, so why not share.
I regularly get up by 5:30 on weekdays so I can be at my job around 7, since I'm responsible for opening the library in the morning. And there ya go.

that can't be the full list of performers, tho. if it is, it is a very weak lineup.

LCD were great tonight. Way better as a band than I'd expected.
My other favorite today was Delorean. Big rave pop sound, went over well with the crowd.
Small stage stuff I caught was mediocre to terrible. But Panda Bear was worst of all - epic, jazz-odyssey levels of pointless self-indulgence.
― The Amy Misto Family Knife (Plasmon), Sunday, 18 July 2010 06:41 (fifteen years ago)
Girls are on now. Not really feeling this, though in some sense I think this is exactly the kind of thing that in principle I like -- singer sounds good, instrumentation works, but the songs are just kind of lying there. Crowd looks bored apart from a few stalwarts at the very front. Lead singer used to be in a band with Matt Fishbeck apparently!
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 18 July 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, here's what I think is the hit, "Lust for Life." I mean, I've heard this. Catchy! But not funny enough.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
Wait, finally they have my attention with what I take to be a cover of "Kill Surf City," but no, it is a song somewhat of their own composition called "Big Bad Mean Motherfucker."
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 18 July 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
Beach House substantially more interesting.

― markers, Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)
the schedule says they were supposed to start playing at 6:15. i think P4k's just replaying their performance from earlier right now. they were playing what looked like some prerecorded stuff not too long ago and then this just started up
― markers, Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)
It's amazing how badly they shit the bed with this stream (not just in terms of how they could have monetized it and turned it into repeat traffic, but in terms of how much better they could have made it for their visitors!).
― Becky Facelift, Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)
i'm just kinda grateful that i'm able to see anything that's going on, really. that being said, though, i think it also would've been cool if they were streaming every performance from every stage, maybe each on a different page? i understand that that would probably be way more expensive to do, though, and maybe they also wanted to save some stuff just for the people who actually paid to see the shows
― markers, Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

― some dude, Saturday, July 17, 2010 8:22 PM (Yesterday)
as an aside, I gotta say that I'm with some dude on this one. there are very few, if any, cases where a website in 2010 should automatically start playing sound the moment you navigate to it. I understand that they'd want to draw attention to the stream and make it really easy for people to watch/listen to, but I think that could be accomplished just by either setting it up on a separate page that would've taken the place of the P4k main page for the weekend or something
― markers, Sunday, 18 July 2010 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

original thought was that Big Boi has a little more leeway in bargaining over what they can show of his performance than the bands whose careers are heavily dependent on Pitchfork do, but I guess they're just doing as they did with Panda Bear and showing the big screen stream?

― markers, Monday, 19 July 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)
you know, maybe they're not streaming it because Pavement's gonna put out a live tour DVD and they knew someone would inevitably capture the stream of this show and put it up on Vimeo or YouTube and that would maybe impact sales or something? no idea. they could be allowing other people to film this for all I know. it's difficult for them to prevent people from doing that anyway, with so many people owning smartphones and stuff

Pavement kind of really ruled, actually. Damn, I am definitely going to have to go to that Pritzker Pavilion show in Chicago now. damn as if I am not spending enough $$ on live music this summer. but Pavement were that good. None of the Malkmus indifference/superciliousness I had been led to expect. none at all actually. just some really great jamming from the whole 5 piece. very nice

On the other hand, I can totally understand why they feel frustrated. Being expected to revel in their lazy shenanigans was annoying way back in the olden days of yore, so why should it be any less annoying today? I guess it's one of those "Fool me once" situations.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
What's really funny is the different reactions to the same show. What some people call "half-assed" some people called "wonderful."
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)
Wasn't 'wonderfully half-assed' the whole point of the band? (Signed, Never Really a Fan)
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)
Totes. Which is why I think she's missing the point. I'm also not sure why she thought a reunion show would somehow not focus on the band's most popular songs.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
I mean, I think Pavement fandom is reasonably meritocratic -- a lot of their most popular songs are their best! Did she really want them to play "Nothing Ever Happens" instead of "Frontwards?"
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
I went to this shindig and also felt a little ambivalent about Pavement's performance, although I sorta feel like it had nothing to do with the band's performance or song selection and more with the fact that in hindsight they probably aren't the best band to close out a festival, even if they've influenced half of the other bands there. I didn't go to any of the other nights but I would kind of assume that the dance party of LCD and/or the anthems of Modest Mouse would have probably been more feel-good and unifying than Pavement's irony and sarcasm.
That said, I was further to the back of the crowd so maybe I was just around more people that didn't care all that much. You could see that the people up front were really into it. I was surprised that they didn't play "Rattled by the Rush" or "Summer Babe" but someone did tell me that Pitchfork gets fined something like $10,000 for every minute they go over 10 pm.
I did like Bob's comment about missing the vuvuzela with the aside about Diego Forlan scoring another goal. Soccer humor!

I heard that they mentioned my friend's festival. Something like "Everyone should go see Psychedelic Horseshit and Times New Viking at Bitchfest," which is pretty hilarious.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah Malkmus definitely said that before leaving the stage. You friends with Rotten Milk? He was my mover last summer.
― stingy, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)
Mile is a bro, but I've known C00per and the rest of the Cave dudes for years.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
Milk, duuuuuh
Bitchpork was dope, too.

Moodles OTM. I have seen both great and terrible Pavement shows and am largely ambivalent about them as a live band as a result. I don't think I've ever seen a band perform with more contempt/disregard for their audience (with the possible exception of those noise rock dudes who opened for Pavement on the Terror Twilight tour whose name I am blanking on - difference being they were great that night and Pavement sucked)

You've never seen the Magnetic Fields???
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 23:27 (fifteen years ago)
I have - I didn't detect any contempt tho, seemed very workmanlike for the most part, except for the number where Merritt went upstairs to sing a song from the opera seat/balcony. They were totally boring tho
― Major Lolzer (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)
the other three magnetic fields do not have contempt for their audience...stephin does though!
― iago g., Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)
True, and I don't think it's real contempt, I think it's shtick -- but it stings!
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
yes, he is a lovable curmudgeon

Shakey, wasn't that US Maple? It was pretty funny watching them empty out the El Rey during their set, but I loved 'em.

I saw them on this tour and US Maple opened for them - is that who you mean?

Did anyone else see Michael Showalter? Dude self-destructed like I've never seen.
― Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 23 July 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)
I like that guy! What happened?
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2010 04:37 (fifteen years ago)
You could hear Broken Social Scene from the main stage as he came out and it just instantly put him in a bad mood. He talked about other times he's done comedy near/after bands and how horribly it's gone and he threatened to just dj from his laptop the whole time, which was kind of funny but he lost interest in it pretty quickly. Then he did start one joke about asking a girl to join the mile-high club, saying she should join him in the bathroom after about 15 minutes because he's going to take a huge shit first. It was pretty funny, but it just sort of petered out without a punch line (I don't know his stand-up, so I don't know if that's his style or not). Then he mentioned reading her text message where she called him a hipster, to which he replied "I'm not a hipster you stupid bitch." Someone in the audience laughing got his attention and he said "Oh, you think you're not one? I bet you're a vegan. I fucking hate you." It wasn't bold confrontation of the audience (who were pretty supportive, even as it became clear we weren't going to get a real show), it was just a mean-spirited guy losing his shit. After that it was maybe 15 minutes or so of little more than him spacing out or talking about how bad the show was going. He left us with a story of seeing a play where the actor forgot his line and said it's good for an audience to see someone waste their time at least once. We'll never forget it.

And Eugene Mirman won a lot of esteem from me for coming on after that, to the same background of Broken Social Scene and a smaller audience, and still putting on a real show.
― Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 23 July 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xB9xBxBFaQLooks like I got some details wrong, and that's not the worst of it, but it'll give you an idea
― Fellini.Kuti, Friday, 23 July 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)
I like Eugene Mirman even more! I wish I could find video of his Pitchfork set.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 23 July 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)
yep. they were awesome. crowd was VERY antagonistic but they ate it up and spit it back.
― Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 July 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)
Showalter set sounds kinda funny to me and I'm not really a fan (I did like the Michael & Michael show tho)
― Moshy Star (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)
the whole comedians in a tent at a festival telling jokes with bands playing off in the background thing is deeply weird and wrongheaded, the sooner people stop trying to do it the better
― some dude, Friday, 23 July 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
they should just pay a bunch of comedians to walk around a festival telling jokes
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 23 July 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
tbh I like BSS and still wouldn't want to put on a comedy show while they were playing "World Sick" in the background
― markers, Friday, 23 July 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)
so do they not have like a big archive of video on p4k.tv or am i just dumb
