I kind of assume this is meant to be a gag (I think I'd be a bit more surprised if it was serious?) but the music is FUN, genuinely good times! It's certainly more balanced than Eminem's last album.

Yeah that first Zef video I saw was obv shot with some pretty nice equipment, which really helps the appeal. If it was shot w a shitty webcam wonder if it would have blown up like it did. They may be playing characters but if those people are actually making the music then really how fake is it? Not that it probably matters anyways.... The beats are pretty badass tho!

Vanilla Ice, I watched TMNT 2 the other day for the first time in a looong while and actually like it a little (particularly Vanilla is here with the New Jack groove). So, the story behind this video and song (or part of the story -- there's so much going on!) is that this kid was being coerced into a form of ritual circumcision by his community. It's culturally mandatory within his ethnic group, so much so that if you are a young man and you do not participate, you are completely ostracized. It's hardcore.

The thinking, and this is communicated pretty bluntly, is that if you don't participate, you're gay, you're effeminate, you're not a real man. You never mature from being a boy to being a man.

The kid is hetero. And he struggled with all of this in real life, with what it meant for his personal and cultural identity. And he came to a point where he was like, you know what, fuck you all. The fact that I won't allow you to slice my penis with an unsterilized knife and risk infection or worse doesn't mean "I'm gay," as you say. If that's what being a man is, I don't want to be a man. I'll be an "evil boy for life." But, yeah, I am a real man, even if I don't participate in this tradition which I now reject, at the risk of being totally ostracized from my community.

Yeah, I've only ever seen him break character in an interview once, and it was basically to holler at an idiot interviewer who insisted on a yes/no answer to "is it a joke?"

Regardless of whether or not he is fronting, it is extremely socially irresponsible as he is something of a mouthpiece for SA. Having seen the glee with which assholes run with this kind of stuff, I find it really gross.

Went to this event last night: http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2012/11/die_antwoord_meltdown_november_13_2012.php - weird to see Ninja and Yo-Landi out of character for so long and just talking about how they put all this together. Boing Boing interviewer was terrible though - felt like all she (and the audience) knew about South African culture was what they saw in District 9.
