I like Morrison better musically, and also deem him a bit cooler.

But Kurt Cobain was much more needed at the time. Jim Morrison arrived at a time that would have been a golden age of music regardless of his existence or not, and a lot better music than The Doors existed at the time anyway. Kurt Cobain arrived on the scene at a time when music was about to be strangled by hair metal, rap, bad mantra-dance and sour FM synths and bad sampling synths. 1987-1991 was a horrible time for music, and grunge at least brought a positive change in the right direction.

Because if *anyone* is fit to judge what is cool...

Overall, I gotta go with Morrison simply because he has more of a track record to go on, and definitely went out on a two-release high: Morrison Hotel & LA Woman. IMHO those records are in a photo-finish with the first two Doors LPs for their best work.

Considering the questions: Morrison was a brilliant writer, but all indications are that he was a total fucking prick. In some ways that adds up to not particularly cool in my book. Cobain may have been a lesser writer (though he had potential for greatness) but seems to have been a pretty OK guy. Ergo, reasonably cool.

Morrison was certainly a technically better singer, but his vocals don't get me in the gut like Cobain's. Way prefer Nirvana to the Doors - more raw emotion, less flabby twiddle-dee-dee and NOISIER.
