Okay let's do this thing. There seems to about eight people interested so far.
Stake your claim to titles here (of course it doesn't matter if two ILXors want to cover the same song.)
Once we've gotten the list together we can then discuss timings etc:
So, first off I plant my flag in 'Boiling Boy', it was the first Wire V2 song I heard (the Peel session version) loved it unreservedly then felt a bit let down by the proper album version, although the one on IBTABA was better. Had to wait ages for it be released on Coatings.

i will definitely be involved, but will need to confer with my musical compadre as to what song to do

and what would you do if this ended up with a series of gently ironic nouvelle vague type pastoral tropicalia pink flag covers?
― nakhchivan, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)
He would shrug and say "What a well-made world."
On the other thread Sean C. suggested I do "Ambitious," which I'm more than fine with -- if someone else does the music.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 February 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

(Not a slam on Sean of course!
Well I never!
More meaning that my own musical abilities are immeasurable in their nonexistence.)
Oh okay then. But hey, you have my permission to do any song you like.
― Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 13 February 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)
Already done 'Ex Lion Tamer', 'Silk Skin Paws' and C. Newman's 'Alone' with band.
'Ahead' has been taken... Maybe 'A Serious of Snakes'... Will get back on this.

Anyone going to take 'Mary Is A Dyke' or 'NYC'?

I'm thinking me and Rob might do one - I'd like to do "Kidney Bingoes" or "King of Ur & Queen of Um" but I need to skim some tracks and decide, so thats just a tentative one for me so far.

'Our Swimmer' pls
I could try that Pato, but a). High beam switch in current car is foot operated, not on a stalk b). Like I mentioned upthread, don't get hung up if more than one person wants to do a particular track, the difference in interpretation would be just as interesting.
To answer Trayce, any Wire song is fair game. Heck if you wanted to do version of a Colin Newman/Duet Emmo/Mzui/Dome/8Time or any other solo configuration go right ahead.
Also, what do you all think would be a fair deadline? (which will of course be broken) One month? Two?
Hopefully before the titles for the next U2 album are leaked!
So for anyone who might be speeding ahead, send files or rapidshare/ftp links to my PM addy. Best quality files possible would be great, WAV/FLAC/AIFF/SHN whatever.
If MP3 then please ensure it's as close to 320kbps as you can get. Don't forget to include any details you might want for the artwork/text.

Hey Wire songs are really easy to work out, I never realised! The last thing a did for a tribute record was by Moondog, that was a bitch. Doing something different with a Wire song that's still good rather than a slavish cover version, not so easy.

― You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
The eternal question! But I do think we should publicize it a bit because why not?
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 March 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)
Couple o questions re. submitting the stuff:
1) Are 24-bit files OK, or should it be 16-bit?
2) Do you want the files mastered in any sort of way? Bus limiting/multiband/et al?

16 bit files are preferable, but I can convert if needs be. Feel free to master your mix, I wasn't planning to master the whole collection, but I will polish any tracks up a little if I think they really require it, which will obviously become clearer when all the tracks come in, so-far the quality has been great.

When we are ready, I'll create an FTP partition and put the details here, maybe some kind mod could also post them at the top of this thread when the time comes. I can also say with some degree of impunity that LJ might be insane, his cover sounds like Peter Hammill and Mayo Thompson bashing each other with over amplified bass guitars.

Anyway, if it comes to the final deadline and I'm not there, go-head. If I do make it, hey.

what is the deadline? mixing has been somewhere between lol and ;_;
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 15 April 2010 12:48 (fifteen years ago)
For submissions it was agreed the deadline would be the end of this week, then I'll need a little while to formailse the text/tracklist and the sequencing then finish the artwork, plus I'm away from work most of next week, so if you push into the middle of next week, it's probably no biggie.
Any later than that and it might get a little sticky if we want to make this available as soon as possible.

xp
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 20 April 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)
XP - I guess it's a little late for strategic planning and focus groups, but I'd be very interested to hear both versions, I'm sure everyone else would too. As I said upthread, I am on holiday until the end of the week so I guess everyone has until Saturday.
BTW, some people have submitted band names and some not so when I lay out the tracklisting text I was intending to format it like this:
1. Bandname - Song Title (ILXHandle)
as well as
1. ILXHandle - Song Title
for those without a bandname.
Is this cool with everyone? I know it's a little clunky, but it being an ILX team effort I though peeps might like to know which ILXor was behind each track.

I've sent it again to your gmail address in case you don't have it handy.

Okay Paul n/p.
Whew, well unless there's any surprise late entries I think we may be there.
I'll do an final update to the list later on this eve, then I'll post the actual tracklist -with the real names- on Sunday evening, then we are looking pretty good for the whole thing to be made available the middle/end of next week.

This is the final list, 19 tracks! Well done everybody!
StaggerLee, as a quick note, there is a little bit of clicking on your file, I know it's kinda LoFi and that's cool but doesn't sound like it's a file transfer glitchy sound, more like it's in the original recording. Can you check the file and see? I actually don't mind it at-all because it sounds like vinyl crackles.

Yeah, it's a fault/feature of the broken-and-breaking-down equipment I was working with. Ancient, not-very-well-taken-care-of Tascam 424 for the bed tracks, then played through a lousy stereo while I sing a live vocal into two microphones plugged into a really ancient Sony reel-to-reel 2-track. But the reel-to-reel had issues keeping the tape in the track, so I had to add tension by running the tape around a pencil before it hit the machine heads, which caused speed issues and the occasional click before devolving into a gimmick at the end.
Wish I'd redone the mix/vox a few more times - there's almost no bass and the drums are horrendously loud etc. but the reel-to-reel (being all but defunct anyway) is now at the recycling depot.

*deep breath* I'm on the case for putting this up in a couple of hours, my laptop at home has tanked so I am including temporary artwork for the tracklisting which I will replace with the real thing until early next week, when I can get my paws on photoshop again.
One mod type question, I'm sticking it up on a partition of my works FTP, that's okay isn't it?
You wont need an FTP client program to grab it, just the link.

that would be tight. i had suggested upthread an idea that i will alter slightly. (potentially) beat the-dream to his release date and do Love Viking: An ILX tribute to the-dream
― stupidfruityswagaliciousexpialidocious (m bison), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
that's pretty funny. maybe i can do a monologue admonishing mr. the-dream for rogue hyphenation.
― bette ghent (get bent), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
it is some odd hyphenizing, i'm wondering if there is some 60's girl group called the dream and he threw it in there to avoid BMI/ASCAP confusion or something

Facebook fan page like Pre-interpreted U2?

hey maresnest -
a couple of the mp3 files you have on the FTP site were converted at the wrong sample rate - 48000Hz instead of 44100Hz. sounds like a supernerdy point here but some mp3 players (like the one in my car!) are going to obey this value and play the tracks at a noticeably slower speed.
the ones that need fixing are "boiling boy" and "strange"
I uploaded a new version of mine here, or you can just reconvert if you likehttp://www.mediafire.com/?j2znngblcjf

― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)
Can you sue someone for misrepresenting a work, i.e. claiming it's a cover and attributing credit to the original band when it doesn't really bear much relation at all?

like an anti-matter Elastica
Gotta say, I feel a bit weird, breaking up the flow of everyone's excellent covers with my 8-minute nouveau-splurge bedroom-art-attack. Makes me nervous when people are all 'this is great!' about the whole thing.
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)
Like you intentionally spoiled the song?
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)
Spoiled?! That's harsh. Gave my own spin on it, yes.
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:31 (fifteen years ago)
Right, this I gotta hear
― Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)
XP: Sorry LJ, I wasn't suggesting you did, just wondering why you might be nervous about CN checking it out. Unless I'm reading you wrong.
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)
You are mental tho' :)
Nooo, I'm not nervous about CN checking it out, just nervous at the blanket praise given to the comp. As if I've somehow thrown a big stinking weed among the roses.
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)
I'm sure it's the scented rose in the bumgut of Satan
― Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)
I can only assume that MaresNest sequenced mine after the prettiest, most radio-friendly song on the whole comp out of some sense of gleeful anarchism
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:43 (fifteen years ago)
I pussied out a bit by not thinking too hard about the sequencing, I knew Ken's was first, Meower last, the multiples had to be far apart and yours and mine (being long assed) needed to be apart too, nowt beyond that.
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)
(that said, 'prettiest' even as meant in that sense is challenged by Sean, n/a, Elvis T and MaresNest...there's a lot of pretty, also a lot of kickass)
Hey - the sequencing's pretty good IMO! I'm not fussed at all; it doesn't seem too worked-out but it works, which is optimal. It works especially well as a double-album; each disc has a nice flow to it. ESOJ/S' one is quite long as well, btw ;-)
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)
Please to put working link to download in first post of thread, I've scrolled up and down through these 500+ messages and found two expired YouSendIt links.

Is that young Mr Grace? Heh!
Now, can we at least talk about the next one yet?
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I have a challenge for people here.
A Disco Inferno tribute album.

*then recovers and does quick google search for sound effects library cd torrent sites*
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
i'm in.
― EGOT Schiele (get bent), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
I'm quite serious, BTW. I would be VERY interested to hear how people would redo those songs/arrangements.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
And if you're willing to coordinate, MaresNest, start up the thread...
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
Bagsy It's A Kid's World
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
That could be very interesting!
Although I take it a No Line On The Horizon-style (hell, ILX Has A Bucket-style) original compositions project isn't on anyone's mind? Maybe the challenge could be to do the DI one in a matter of days.
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
I'm more than willing
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
I hear you LJ, but I'm wondering (like I did last time) who is in the frame for upcoming releases.
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
Good on ya, MaresNest. Start the thread.
I'm in for "Love Stepping Out."
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
Can't we just...create? Ah fine, I'm down for this. Something off 'Technicolour', not sure what yet (Working For A Nuclear Free City are about to release an album with looooads of tracks, not that anyone except Ned and I actually care)
― Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
(*cares)
Another ILX Bucket comp *is* a very good idea, but I almost want to defer to Mark G to coordinate that! If he's willing.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)
No reason we can't have more than one going!
― Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 May 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
Yep, here goes then!
― double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
Once again, n/a's contribution has attacked me many months hence and blown my little mind. Dude, you're a hero. Although I gotta reiterate that this compilation is rock-solid from start to finish.

Reasons I don't want to do this:
1) I had a fantastic time doing this, it was like christmas every time a track arrived, and barring a few technicalities (i.e. a couple of tracks that were too long) I was able to incorporate everything I received into the final tracklisting, and every track was wonderful. It's not that 'you shouldn't revisit, next time would not be as good' it's more that someone else should have that kind of fun.
2) I was going to contribute a track last time, but ran out of time and/or inspiration, I forget which. Also, I would be either biased towards (or against) my track's placement (or lack of it), etc. Someone else needs to make that kind of decision.
3) Thesedays, I have less of an ILX presence. Having said that, if someone does kick Vol4 off, they'd better let me know. I missed out on the U2 and the Wire comps, but hey.
So, it's up for grabs.
Hmm, I might repost that message on a dedicated thread.

Hah, my friend Tyler just played "Ambitious" by Paul and Ned (and credited it from the album 12SBU on the playlist! I don't think he even knows that this thread exists. Congrats! Also, Tyler's show is awesome, tune it:

Haha this is a vision.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 March 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
It was beautiful in the context of the show too. I have no idea how he got the song, but Tyler is a gem, so it was perhaps one of those things that was meant to be. He just played Medicine by the way.
― grandavis, Monday, 12 March 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)
It's been a little while since Bowie & seeing as it was popular and fun, might anybody be interested in another shot at an ILX Wire Comp? I'm happy to curate.

I really wish I had been able to do this - went thru a breakup right in the middle of the damn thing - but in a way I'm glad I didnt because now I would have done "silk skin paws" instead of "kidney bingos" and I really want to do a cover of it anyway, just listening to the track again now, damn.
