Pitchfork reports:

The new album's title? Forgiveness Rock Record.

It's out May 4th. New song, "World Sick," available if you give BSS your email address or stream it from the above P4k link.

kshighway (ksh), Friday, 19 February 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

What a great title!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously what the hell is wrong with you that you think that is a great title.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that is a ghastly title.

I don't know, dudes, I mean, Forgiveness Rock Record. It's just brilliant!!

kshighway (ksh), Friday, 19 February 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

this isn't meant as a diss -- genuinely curious -- why do people like this band?

tylerw, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

like is there a song I'm missing that is amazing?

You Forgot It In People is a massively over-hyped, over-rated indie rock record with one great song: "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl"

Seriously what the hell is wrong with you that you think that is a great t (ksh), Friday, 19 February 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

another great title

Mr. Que, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

YFIIP has many songs perfect to hear when you put yr itunes on random and then to be forgotten as soon as they finish.

80085 (a hoy hoy), Friday, 19 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

stop it they are the greatest band ever

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 19 February 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

Let's just say they polarize people. Between people with good taste and people who like grunge jam bands.

Brio, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

I love the muddy, layered sound of both albums. It is a cliche, but it really rewards repeated listening. I can totally see how that isn't everyone's thing though. Plus they usually put on a hell of a live show.

sofatruck, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

"World Sick" is really good.

Seriously what the hell is wrong with you that you think that is a great t (ksh), Friday, 19 February 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

You Forgot It is a fine fine record. The self-titled follow-up is perhaps the most overproduced record of all time, and that may be understating the case.

My favorite song of theirs remains New Country, which you'll find as track 3 here.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 19 February 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

"cause = time" is the classic song

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 February 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

word. and good songs that when given room to breathe live kicked ass, and in acoustic sets for radio turned out to be kind of awesome folk-rock.

YFIIP is wonderful in that it's front-to-back amazing and also sort of a grab bag. like changing dials on a radio.

New Country is def. one of their best tunes and the Fast Mix of Major Label Debut should have/could have been an actual hit. but for my money, their shining moment is the off-kilter summertime jam 7/4 (Shoreline) - those horns!

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 19 February 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

This first single has really lowered my expectations for this album.

sofatruck, Thursday, 4 March 2010 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

It would have for me, but I don't think it's actually the first single? It's sort of just a promo taste to give the general vibe perhaps? I mean, if it's intended to be the lead single, it's a disappointment, but otherwise it's just a solid album track.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 4 March 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

I still want to believe that they have (at least) another Shoreline in them.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 4 March 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

A couple new songs have been released. Assuming that this first batch of songs is to represent the "sound" of the new album, I'm not expecting to be a big fan.

It's interesting–iff you read some of the older interviews–how much the band tried to explain away the messy production of the previous album. There was obviously a great deal of disappointment with Dave Newfeld. But comparing what I've heard so far, though, Newfeld has got John McEntire beat. I'm just really bored by these songs.

Benjamin-, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

I hated them at first, but they're growing on me.

Simon H., Wednesday, 24 March 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

I remember reading those interviews and laughing because the band was apologizing for a lot of the things that endeared me to that record!

akm, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

It reminded me of something that sounds really overproduced.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

dave newfeld was always clearly approx 75% of what was great about broken social scene. low expectations for this one.

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

Sounding even more like a band that almost exists to sell merch to casual hipsters. "I heard them in Gap and I bought their t-shirt immediately!"

Broken Social Scene - LP 4

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 05:34 (fifteen years ago)

I am scared of growing up. Scared that one day, I will find the buzzbands of 2k9-2k11 to be ‘dated.’ One day I will turn my back on them, searching for something more authentic. Something more ‘now.’

Making so many memories, riding chillwaves, visiting Pavilions, cherrypicking from the hypemachine. But one day, I will get a new computer, and I won’t migrate these mp3s with me.

ksh, Friday, 26 March 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

This band started to decline with the introduction of Lisa Lobsinger

http://guttersnipemedia.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/363px-lisa_lobsinger.jpg

The last couple times I saw this band, she was the replacement for Feist, Emily Haines, and Amy Millan. That picture sums it up. Awful! Completely lifeless. Yet, she continues to remain in the band.

When I was really into this band, you'd see Feist running around the stage, switching up instruments. Having fun. These dudes are old now.

Benjamin-, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 14:40 (fifteen years ago)

She was in the audience the first time I saw them... knew her because she worked at a local record shop in Calgary. I knew all these only because my friend had a crush on her.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard Feel Good Lost since 2005, but do you think that one's worthwhile too?

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

i barely even remember what it sounded like -- it was all instrumental i think? maybe ambient in parts? *shrugs*

ksh, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

ya it's just really pretty "ambient" instrumental jams. i tend to start my broken social scene calendar on yfip but fgl is nice, a friend of mine put it on one night, def some solid moments of transcendental beauty contained on that record.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 12 April 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

velko, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

I'd say

Sweetest Kill
Art House Director
Ungrateful Little Father
All to All
World Sick

all count as at least being "pretty good." I don't think there's as much glut as there was on the s/t (IE "Bandwitch," etc.).

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah there are some decent tunes here... its growing on me. But that Lisa Lobsinger comment up thread is OTM, "All to All" sucks.

sofatruck, Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

also I think McEntire's production is kind of a step up tbh - I'd love to hear what he'd have done with the s/t material

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)

"Romance to the Grave" is a neat tune, too. Not so keen on "Water in Hell," though I get that people dig its Pavement-y vibe. (I hear Spiral Stairs makes some cameos on this one?)

Simon H., Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

Not a big fan of Ungreatful Little Father. Other than World Sick, I think the Kevin Drew songs are kind of weak. Also, he comes off abrasive or maybe cynical on this album. Do you hear that at all?

Benjamin-, Thursday, 15 April 2010 05:52 (fifteen years ago)

this band only has one good song, the one where the girl sings with the robot voice about other girls putting on makeup. if you conform to gender roles, you are a robot! whoooaaaaa so many layers

love this post

ksh, Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

It's not that bad. I like a few of the songs, but I am still very surprised that it has received such positive reviews. It is just sort of there. There is nothing extraordinary, beautiful or surprising about this album. I understand that plenty of people on this board would say the same thing about their previous albums, but this one just seems totally lifeless.

But it interests me for some reason. I keep listening to it, even just to figure out what they were thinking. For instance, the song "Chase Scene." It sounds nothing like BSS, which could potentially be a good thing, but it's not. It just sounds like they were stoned and were like, "hey doesn't wah pedal this sound funny. It like a car chase scene in a 70s movie."

Benjamin-, Sunday, 9 May 2010 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

I think I said it on the other BSS thread but I think the music on "Chase Scene" sounds like Tortoise.

"Nothing surprising" is about right. I mean, it's Broken Social Scene, no mistake. I'd like to survey all the people who are stoked on the newest Spoon and New Pornographers albums, but are left cold by BSS because it fails to differentiate itself from their other stuff. I don't mean that in a snide way--some bands just seem able to get away with making versions of the same album over and over. Others don't. I'm liable to come down on either side of the fence depending on the day or the band. I don't know the secret.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Sunday, 9 May 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

Benjamin, this

It's not that bad. I like a few of the songs, but I am still very surprised that it has received such positive reviews. It is just sort of there.

uhh, songwriting?

Cosmo Vitelli, Sunday, 9 May 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah but the quality of BSS's songwriting on the new one is not so far removed from their last.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Sunday, 9 May 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

their last album was a mess. the only time it broke through the haze is when they let the pieces breathe by clearing the dense production tricks and layers (e.g., the song hotel, i think, tho i can't really recall).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 May 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)
