Pantha du Prince - Black Noise (I hope the year is full of albums I unexpectedly like this much)
Marina & the Diamonds - streaming Family Jewels or individual tracks until CD arrives
Tokyo Jihen - Sports (yet another disappointing album-length release from Shiina Ringo (with or without the boys), which makes four in a row)
Ghada Shbeir - Qawaleb (Composed by Sayed Darwish - historically important music, but still somewhat difficult for me to get into despite Shbeir's fresh approach to preserving this sort of material)
Ahmed el Hifnawi - Memories of the Beach (generic-looking packaging does not hint at how good this is (though the percussion seems a bit too bland on first listen); Al Hifnawi was Oum Kalthoum's main violinist and he was awesome)
Ahamd el Hefnawi & The Oum Koulthoum Orchestra - The Grand Melodies of Om Kalsoum (haven't heard all of this yet--and more on all this Arab stuff likely later on appropriate threads)

it's good but if you haven't heard the debut definitely pick that up first. the new one's more folky and miserable. i'm kind of bummed at the lack of garage boogie, but the title track kind of makes up for it.

don't get Bat for Lashes at all. i mean, she's cute an all but that record is just...zzzzzzzzzzzzz. (Bjork minus marbles--not to mention any tangible sense of song dynamics whatsoever--maybe?)

the not-loved one (Ioannis), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

I'm can't speak to the Bjork comparisons since I've never listened to her much at all, but to my ears BFL's songs have plenty of dynamics. Definitely a lot less snoozeworthy than the new Vampire Weekend, to pick a recent example.

There are a few Bjorkisms but there are way more Tori Amosisms. Also, I think her strongest songs are on Fur & Gold ("Trophy", "What's A Girl To Do", "Bat's Mouth"). I like the way Two Suns works as an album and strongly disagree that there is no sense of song dynamics (IMO it's pretty willful revisionism to say that "Sleep Alone", "Moon and Moon" and "Two Planets" all occupy the same dynamic space).

twice boiled cabbage is death, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

but does anyone have any tips on other drummers who play with that loose second-line funk sound like Zigaboo and Smokey Johnson?

i have to scavenge to get my second-line drumming fix. like, shannon powell on leroy jones "bourbon street parade" (from mo' cream from the crop), herlin riley on "happy feet blues" (wynton marsalis live at the village vanguard), herlin on shamarr allen's record, and gerald french "when my dreamboat comes home" (from mark braud's record "hot sausage rag"). also jason marsalis on john ellis records (check out "happy" from one foot in the swamp).

all that stuff is more jazz-oriented, though. if you're talking about backbeat funk, do you like stanton moore? he's a zigaboo disciple obv, and i like their older records when they were strictly retro. i also like maceo parker's "southern exposure" a lot, which has mostly new orleans musicans. russell batiste plays drums on a few tracks, and rebirth is on there too.

where did you get the o.g. version of "ain't my fault"? i love it, but hadn't heard it until i got it off this blog.

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i should have clarified, re: BfL, that the dynamics within any particular track didn't do much for me; which is, right, not to say that they all sound the same (and probably wouldn't matter if they did--hell i'm a Motorhead fan!). sorry, but one snooze-worthy track after another, vaguely different s-w track just isn't going to cut it for me. i mean, at least bjork is a genuine weirdo when it comes to song construction, album sequencing, etc. (never cared much for Tory either tho.)

xps

van smack, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for the tips, man! I think I actually did sort of mean backbeat funk, but I'm always up for the more jazz-oriented side. I saw Shannon Powell kick some major ass at Preservation Hall a couple years ago when he did a great tribute to Smokey.

Yeah I've always heard a lot of talk about Stanton but every time I've given Galactic a shot they haven't really done anything for me, but it's all been the more fusion/electronic stuff. I'll have to check out the early stuff.

I actually found the Smokey Record at the Tower Records(RIP) on Decatur a couple years back after striking out at Louisiana Music Factory. They play the title track and "Did You Heard What I Saw" on WWOZ all the time and I bought it for a coworker (who I ripped it from, of course) as a congrats present when his wife gave birth.

I listened to The Verve's "Urban Hymns" this morning. I've owned it for like 7 years but I never really got into it til this morning, and it's weird that I liked it so much because this is totally not the type of thing I've been listening to recently.

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Thursday, 4 March 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

My husband dislikes the album but I think it's fucking ace.

lee renaldo - ambient loop for vancouver

Just pulled this off my shelf and tossed it into the eBay pile, I mean, I <3 me some Lee Ranaldo but that shit is boring...

nah it's fine but take heed of ambient and loop in titles i'd say

nakhchivan, Thursday, 4 March 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

Point taken. I like plenty of loop-based ambient stuff, but maybe I'm looking for more evolution/progression in the loops than Lee's giving me on that release (e.g., Basinski's Disintegration Loops series).

It's not meant to be a "zing" at all, just thinking out loud as to why I may not like the Lee record as much as I ought to.

Unless you are LOLing at my characterization of Basinski's stuff as having evolution/progression, which I totally get.

Bunches of Motorhead, just got an older live 2cd called Everything Louder than Everything Else.
Daturah - I got both of their albums off of emusic. They are a 'postrock' group kind of like Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai. I like them quite a bit more than those two groups, as they will let it rip at points more than later Mogwai and their music is often quite melodic.
Pylon - Never had their two older records, got them both as mp3s. They were a cool group with a good sound and kind of funky at times.
Miles Davis -Bitches Brew & In A Silent Way - these get a few plays every year.
80s Genesis & Phil Collins - I hadn't really listened to these since the 80s much, certain tunes are pretty good. The self-titled LP is pretty good front to back. It's weird going back and hearing those old analog drum boxes on these tunes after hearing those sounds used in so much hip hop and techno.
John Fox - Metamatic - got interested in this one from that BBC documentary on synth pop, it's quite a good record. There are some good songs on the follow up The Garden, but the production isn't as good.

Saw this guy on Wednesday night at SXSW and his new shit blew my mind. Possibly the best show I've seen in 8 years of attending the Austin-based fest. New album's gonna be insanely good. Not to mention, the man behind the music is one of the most humble musicians I've ever witnessed (he stuck around for 45 minutes after the show at the foot of the stage, expressing his gratitudes to any person who walked up to say "thanks, you just put on the best show I've seen in quite some time," which, not kidding, was about half the crowd -- shit was insanely good).

Good lord, "Brother Rapp"> "Ain't It Funky Now" is AMAZING on this. After hearing "Brother Rapp" on this recording, I immediately tracked down the album/single version of it, which sounds absolutely limp compared to the intensity captured during this performance in Paris. I mean, it makes you GRIT YOUR TEETH. Amazing.

Then there's the transition into "Ain't It Funky Now", which reminds me of the tricks that Can were doing around the same time with extreme dynamic and tempo shifts. I was searching for ILX thoughts about this song/album and found found this nice quote from Ken Vandermark in The Wire:

"It's the only album where the band run him over. It's got Bootsy Collins his brother Catfish Collins, it was the group he picked up, I think, in Cleveland to replace the JBs because Maceo (Parker) and all those guys quit or were fired or whatever happened. The thing starts with the MC and everyone screaming and the band's in this mid tempo groove which is really happening and they cut into this blistering piece "Brother Rapp". James Brown says "Brother's gotta rap, brothers gotta rap, hit me!" and it jumps. You can hear James Brown on top of the band that are just kicking, saying "Hang On!".

"A friend of mine found a video of the concert and they are doing this "Brother Rapp" tune, and it cuts into another piece at a completely unrelated tempo. It sounds like it must have been a splice but they did this live. Friends of mine were trying to figure out how he did this because it just kind comes out of nowhere, like the group get dropped down into this thing 100 per cent solid. On the video, we watched it over and over and over again, and the only cue is he makes this hand signal a few bars before the change. It's one of the most extraordinary moments in music. It's incredible. Yeah, you should buy that record."

Thanks to unperson for linking to that video a few weeks ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0fn-xyaGHE

The transition is a little after 3:40.

I've held off buying Blue Record because I'm keeping an eye out in the used bins for a copy of the 2xCD Relapse special edition with the live disc. But it's a great album -- I've listened elsewhere and it doesn't disappoint.

Unless you are dead set about getting it used, try B3st Buy. The ones around here only stocked that version upon release and I still see a 2-disc copy around there.

To be topical:

Kaki King - Junior
Ratt - Out of the Cellar
Clutch - Clutch
Nine Inch Nails - Broken

ilxor: didn't even know there was a two disc edition. thanks for the heads up! (it is a great record.)

jon: how's the Kaki King?

ksh, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

I think the Kaki King is fantastic, still early days but I can see it certainly being one of my favorites. Seek out "Hallucinations from My Poisonous German Streets" and "Sunnyside" for a really good taste of what it has going on.

Hey thanks, that's good advice! As much as I prefer to support my locally grown record stores (lolindie), I will swing by Best Buy tomorrow and see if I can find a copy. I'm not set on finding it used; I just thought it was completely out of print.

Didn't find the Baroness 2xCD, but I did get pitched on DirecTV twice in the time it took me to make it over to the CD racks. A good reminder, among many, why I'll continue to shop at local record stores...

Whatcha listening to 2010, ksh?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

right now I'm listening to "I'm With You" by Avril Lavigne on YouTube

yesterday, it was the new Caribou, which sounded decent enough but I need to dig into it more. besides that, this is the year i've been really "getting into metal" after many years of barely listening to any, which were preceded by many years of heavy Metallica, Tool, and nu-metal listening (along w/ pop & hip-hop singles)

most recently:

Cobalt - Gin
Baroness - Blue Record
High On Fire - Snakes For The Divine
Isis - Panopticon
Isis - Wavering Radiant

ksh, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

oh, and "Blood Mountain"

ksh, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't heard Cobalt, but will attest that the others are all great metal records. Be sure to dig into their back catalogs as you have the time/interest (will especially rep. for Isis' Oceanic, Mastodon's Remission and HOF's entire back catalog).

The Caribou album is great, I've spun it 10+ times in the past week over here (why I forgot about it on my list, who knows) and it's one of my favorite releases of the year. Really great album.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

oh man, check out the Cobalt -- i've been listening to some of the first couple tracks on it again and again. thanks for the tip re: Isis, Mastodon, and HOF. will definitely try to get through all of their back catalogues.

and i'm glad to hear the Caribou is solid. i need to listen to it more for sure.

ksh, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

Your mileage w/ Caribou may vary, of course. I'm a long-time fan, having seen him on pretty much every album tour -- Up in Flames, Milk, Andorra, all great albums and supporting live shows. Really dig how he's carved out his own psych-pop niche within the music world, and each album puts a new twist of some sort on his songwriting.

not as blown away by it as i'd hoped but it's growing on me. it still has the recognizable synths & beats for sure, but seems pretty focused on blending that with strings & spacey '60s free jazz. the whole thing is on his myspace.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Friday, 30 April 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

I recently spun the olde John McLaughlin/Jimi Hendrix jam for the first time in a long time. Despite McLaughlin's own negative comments, its really very good improvised space travel. I wish Jimi's session with Miles Davis & Tony Williams had come off.

Surf's Up/Plastic Ono Band are kind of kindred albums, aren't they? Death of the '60s introspection and paranoia. Both are incredible though.

Not too bad on the ones I bought, I picked those up at an antique barn in Saugatuck. Most of those listed were between 4 and 6 dollars, which may have been high, but outside the U.K. one I haven't really regularly run across any of those. The most expensive one was the Arthur Brown one at 8 bucks. The weird thing was that really common records were running like 10-15 bucks, kind of insane.

Sam500: The new Black Dog project, Music For Real Airports is a fine piece of ambient electronica, albeit one that takes a fairly puzzling public potshot at Eno. Why anyone would choose Music For Airports to raise an eyebrow at, given his work with Coldplay and James is anyone's guess. But this comes across as the gentlemanly ribbing it actually is compared to the song 'Brian Eno' by MGMT.

Slowly getting into Bruce Springsteen. Was turned off of him for years because my introduction was through that E Street Live box. Turns out I'm one of the few people who can't stand his live act.

sofatruck, Thursday, 7 October 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

i can't stand his full-band live act, either. give me his menacing, brooding acoustic side.

white noise - electric storm

miss danilelle steven and her clitoral stimulator (contenderizer), Thursday, 7 October 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)

hey, do you like the PCS stuff, jon /via/ chi? if so, what's a good starting point. i've heard only a little but haven't yet been blown away...

miss danilelle steven and her clitoral stimulator (contenderizer), Thursday, 7 October 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

I've had No Wonderlarnd for awhile now, but its just now sinking in. I honestly think the S/T might be a better starting point though, it grabbed me right away. Nice mix of the biker boogie and more stretched-out stuff.

"i dig this album, and this label. it's trippy."

I dont know why but listening to The Hidden Door evokes a train journey from West Yorkshire to London I experienced as a child in the 70's. The BP do sound a bit like the soundtrack to a 70's Ken Loach film from an alternative multiverse where Ken has forsaken his standard social realism after dropping too much acid.

Just paid for downloads of four classic Willie Rosario albums, which I've been kicking myself for not buying when they were reissued on CD a little while back (now out of print). He's become more and more of a favorite of mine over time, and in a sense deserves to be much better known outside of salsa circles, but then again, he's really more of a salsero's salsero.

When we have our end of year poll in a few weeks, can we think of some cleverer ways to put the nominations out there for everybody to listen to? Something a little more sophisticated and 2011 than "here are the names of the songs, go hunt them down yrselfs"

Yes, that Nachtmystiuma album is fantastic and sure to place very high on my list.

Cunga, the only issue with your suggestion is that not everyone can access Spotify and it kinda gets maddening to see link after link to awesome stuff that is completely useless to you. Also, YouTube embeds completely bog down threads and make them impossible to open after awhile. So what else would give you what you want?
