loujag laid out the rules here: ALL-NEW FREEFORM (SORTA) 1990s ALBUMS POLL: THE BANNS

basically you can vote for anything that didn't place in the original poll: THE 1990s POLL RESULTS - THE ALBUMS

he's not doing nominations, but I thought it'd be helpful to have a thread to just list good albums to suggest and remind people out that came out in the 1990s, were awesome, and missed the previous poll, whether you're definitely going to vote for them or just want to gauge support for them or whatever. I'm gonna get the ball rolling with some classic hip hop LPs:

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt*
Mobb Deep - The Infamous*
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
UGK - Ridin' Dirty*
2Pac - All Eyez On Me*
Big Punisher - Capital Punishment*
Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night*
Common - Resurrection*
The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death
De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate

* no albums by this artist were in the first poll, so anything else by them is up for grabs too (I highly suggest everyone do this when they post too)

Pulp - His N Hers
Pulp - This Is Hardcore

I don't hate Different Class like lj does, but i'm definitely down with trying to get either of these up there in this poll

dora the explaro (some dude), Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Unrepresented on original poll and ought to be represented imo:

Fugazi
Ghostface
Bone Thugs
Photek
Burzum
The Auteurs
Drexciya
Burger/Ink
Pale Saints
Flying Saucer Attack
Basehead
Ice Cube

A lot, basically.

"Fuck Off" to the Buskers (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

The original poll is pretty dire. I would like to lobby for Uncle Tupelo and the Geto Boys.

begs the question, when is enough enough (Euler), Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

oh hi I just mentally crossed Burger/Ink off my giant imaginary shortlist because I thought it would not get votes but if it would then that is cool and hopefully I can find space to get it one myself
also forgot about Drexciya, man so much stuff
not sure there is any way I can vote without either hacking mine down to the very most obvious things or voting for 199 albums and doing none of them any favours but maybe a pretty epic 90s mix cd or three will come out of this

(xpost because ILX wouldn't load)

things I would like to see and believe might actually get some other votes: Polvo*, Stars of the Lid*, Gas*, Unwound*, Don Caballero*, Sun City Girls*

the following bands were all represented in the last one but not with my favourite of their 90s work: Pavement, Stereolab, Autechre, the Orb, Guided by Voices, Magnetic Fields (lol corniest indie list) - but this poll is so hard to vote for that I may have to rule any bands in the last one out just to get a list together

maybe surmounter will vote so I can give some points to Belly* - a weird pick for Best Album votes maybe but that was the first album I was completely obsessed with and I still put it on pretty regularly

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

4 Gang Starr albums in the 90s, all eligible.

maciej recognizing trill, Saturday, 27 February 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

Crackle Box, Saturday, 27 February 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

(xxxp) I might vote for vivadixieetc, and could possibly vote for a Trans Am album but not sure which (Surrender or Futureworld most likely)
but no promises yet as I've got a whole lot of whittling to do if I want to give anything more than 4 points

(xxp) that Boards of Canada made the original btw Crackle Box but I can't see any of the others

oh god every new post is bringing up an artist i'd forgotten about and would like to vote for, may have to stop reading

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 27 February 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

btw if y'all get stuck b/c of too many options just try and limit yourself to the first 8 or 9 that REALLY leap into your head - it's what I'm gonna do in all probability

Fuck. Completely missed this one, keep forgetting it was released in 1999. Definitely one of my favorite records of the 90s.

Moka, Saturday, 27 February 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

don't know about album but the passengers track 'your blue room' would receive voting consideration - easily U2's best song imo

I remember liking that album. I always think of the band when I'm at Amoeba in SF because it's the name of the street that runs just behind.

This object perpetually attempts to sell itself on eBay. (Stevie D), Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

Here's a few things I think would deserve your vote:

Heltah Skeltah - Nocturnal
Meshell Ndegeocello - Peace Beyond Passion
Air Liquide - Nephology
Shakespears Sister - Hormonally Yours
Hardfloor - The Best of Hardfloor (it's a compilation, but all the tunes are from the 90s, and for artists like Hardfloor a comp makes more sense than albums + it also includes some dope remixes they've done for other artists)
Ahlam - Revolt Against Reason
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda
Eve - Ruff Ryders' First Lady
Two Lone Swordsmen - Stay Down
The Coup - Genocide & Juice
The Coup - Steal This Album
Burger/Ink - Las Vegas
The Bionaut - Lush Life Electronica
Various - Blech II: Blechsdöttir (Warp Records comp/mix)
Biosphere - Patashnik
Biosphere - Substrata
Neotropic - 15 Levels of Magnification
Hell - Munich Machine
Prince - Love Symbol
Prince - Emancipation
The Lady of Rage - Necessary Roughness
Cypress Hill - III (Temples of Boom)
Marusha - Raveland
Nonplace Urban Field - Raum für Notizen
Red Snapper - Prince Blimey
Omni Trio - Haunted Science
Various - Metalheadz Presents Platinum Breakz (another comp: again, all the tunes are from the 90s, and it makes more sense to vote for this than any Metalheadz artist albums)
4 Hero - Two Pages
Björk - Debut

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

No Ice Cube on the original poll results!!!?! this is unacceptable.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Geir - you like Woodface, right? Take Dodgy off your list and give their points to Crowded House, please. I have a James Brown CD upstairs which I promise to throw away if you help me out here.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

I'm planning to vote for Woodface, so I'll try to tack on a few extra points for your sake, Ismael.

Radiohead

This is only the second poll to be repeated, after the 1970s one. And I don't think Radiohead did so well in that.

Love that Rain Tree Crow album. When considering my votes I wasn't sure if was '89 or '90 though.

Astley Hunchings (Jon Lewis), Monday, 5 April 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

I have "Amber" on my mental list and was probably gonna vote for something by HNIA but keep being indecisive about which - but I'm going to vote for a whole lot of things and probably everything is getting single-figure votes, so nobody count on me to bump up their favourites

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

Hey Louis, I just noticed a typo in my ballot, I'd written Me’Shell Ndegéocello as "Ndegécello", without the middle "o". I doubt she's gonna make the top 100 or whatever you're gonna roll, but just in case she does...

Various Artists - History of Our World Part I

This is a great selection of tunes, but I only heard it during the 00s, so I spent my d'n'b compilation vote for Platinum Breakz, which was something I was actually listening to back in the day.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 April 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Ack, I don't yet have a d'n'b compilation vote, should probably fix that. I loved this so very much, not that I'd expect anyone else to vote for it:

falling while carrying an owl (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Ah cool, Tuomas, will correct...

william mcgonadal's tay ridge disaster (acoleuthic), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

I think the 90s were probably the decade for various artists compilations, at least when it comes to electronic music. Unless you were a DJ or otherwise had loads of money to spend on singles (and had a working vinyl deck), compilations were the best way to get electronic/dance music, especially during the first half of the decade when electronic albums were still relatively rare. That said, I only included three comps in my poll, even though there were many others I have fond memories of, because I assume 98% of votes will still go to albums, so I didn't want to "waste" too much of my ballot.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 April 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

Another problem, of course, is that there were so many of those comps that the votes will probably be spread too thin. For example, back in 1994 Trance Europe Express 3 was very important record to me, as I discovered a whole bunch of artists by hearing them on that comp (Air Liquide, Alter Ego, Mouse on Mars, µ-ziq, Banco de Gaia...), but I doubt there are too many other ILXors for whom it mattered as much.

some dude, Saturday, 7 August 2010 11:18 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the idea was that the alternate 90s singles poll would be arranged after the 00s poll is over. And it is now. I think Sam/A Hoy Hoy said he could do that, but maybe he can delegate it to you?

Tuomas, Saturday, 7 August 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't somebody saying they were going to do an emocore poll or something like that though? We should really be careful of overlapping polls.
