I remember Randy being interviewed on Jimmy Fallon trying to namedrop this band a couple months back, pushing how innovative they are. Now that I've heard them, I think we can make a good federal case for Randy Jackson being lifetime banned from the music industry.

My favorite part of the Paper Tongues scenario, and pretty much any undeniably shitty music that makes it YouTube, is the comments section, where it is revealed that THERE ARE ACTUALLY PEOPLE WHO LIKE THIS SONG:
no I agree his moves are real talent it makes you watch the whole band unfold. Bands with this many members are cool their synth use, dance ability and rock overtones are pefect don't suppose you could book a better band for a gig This singer is quite possibly, the coolest guy ever. You know this to be true One of the best songs I've heard in a long time. Amazing. unbelievable hook. Brian Johnson skills influence they're all that, song is worth a mil pay em immediately I'll chip in $18 nice, really enjoyed! loving this song 6 hours later: I'm still singing this song. lol This song and video is so addicting! The lead singer is so...bouncy. He's just dancing all over the place. They all just look like they're having fun. Too cool! I was flippin through the channels when I saw this video. I HAD to check them out. & is he jerkin at 3:00-3:04? : ) I'm sold! lol north carolina in da house

Not that they're good as musicians, but Whatever else you say about them, they are just completely unflappable, and both the video and live performance of Under Pressure are weirdly compelling because of it. It is almost completely off the rails, and the combination of self-confidence and inadquate talent, and the gayness of it all, add a very strange twist to the whole rap-rock thing! And I have to admit that strangeness is something I value very highly in music.
In the Under Pressure X-Factor clip I could swear I heard booing in the audience.

Really fucking odd that this thread has 2010 as the year of jedward CONSIDERING ALL THESE VIDEOS ARE FROM 2009. I guess not making F2k meant they were eligible the year they were made?
The point is that we as a country as sick of talent and reality shows and just wanted something pretty lol to kill off the miss pre-teen usa vibes we are stuck with. see also: ratm xmas #1. I know America takes all this 'who can sound most like mariah' shit seriously but it is starting to become the most painful bore over here and needs some lols to spice it up.

how in hell is J&E a better (i.e. funnier) name than Jedward?!
uh, J&E is just an abbreviation i am using in this thread. Jedward just doesn't really make sense, not that Jonward would've been better. I just think if you're going to create portmanteaus for duos (as is increasingly the case) do it properly or not at all, don't bash a square peg into a round hole (i guess you could say it's fitting for them tho).
uk's pop decline is imo much to do with the majors giving up/accepting that they can't 'compete' with what america does best or that the public just aren't interested/don't "need" that now, so have to look at alternatives that can still sell. this actually rules out what the uk has traditionally done best but essentially it's what always happened with hip-hop in the uk. leona and alex burke (and estelle) are obv good singers but aren't going to excite people beyond that in the way us equivalents do (and they're not encouraged to, because 'leave that to the americans'). a british gaga wouldn't really work either because smaller market/less money to throw behind it (fortunately there's people like roisin and alison who make actually better music with the 'art pop' aspect - goldfrapp's biggest hits are their weaker songs tho natch).
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)
JLS are a bit of an anomaly maybe because the US seemed to give up on black boybands themselves (or at least exporting them).
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

you are insane!
anyway as other ppl have said, Jedward aren't 'music' as such, they're light entertainment. but i'm not really sure whether the rise (or resurrection) of light entertainment in the uk in the last 10 years is a cause or effect of the declining quality of chartpop that you describe.

I think the concern over Jedward is seriously overstated. So they jump around enthusiasticaly without any apparent gifts in the singing/dancing dept. Is that really any different to what Girls Aloud do? I mean, the great strengths of GA is their production/songwriting support. When you watch them trying to do it live it's more or less on the same level as Jedward. Except with worse outfits (in this case):

idk, seeing girls aloud jump around enthusiastically is somehow on a different level from seeing jedward do it...

Man, I gotta quit living in the past, because my expectations are just too damn high. Two of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen were Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Commodore in 1978 and then Petty again—with Bob Dylan—at Berkeley, California’s Greek Theatre in ’84. Both shows left me totally drained and in awe of the elevating power of rock ’n’ roll, so that now whenever I hear the words “Tom Petty live” I perk up like Pavlov’s pup at the sound of the bell.Tom Petty spoiled me rotten, I have to say, but now it seems like the party’s over. Not that his show at GM Place last night sucked, because Tom Petty could never suck: his songs are too good and his band too tight. But time is catching up to the 59-year-old rocker, and seriously sapping the spark that once made him brilliant on stage. And would it have killed him to play a few more hits?Petty took to the stage in the casual garb he’s known for—including blue jeans and cowboy boots—and started things off on a winning note with 1991’s “Kings Highway”. It took no time at all for his crack band—lead guitarist Mike Campbell, bassist Ron Blair, keyboardist Benmont Tench, rhythm guitarist/pianist/harmonica player Scott Thurston, and drummer Steve Ferrone—to transform into a well-oiled machine that then headed down the road with the rambling (in a good way) “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. When Petty crooned “let’s roll another joint” the jay-smokers in the crowd took it as their cue to light up, so they were soon in the right frame of mind to enjoy the super-catchy “I Won’t Back Down” from Petty’s first solo (i.e. non-Heartbreakers) album, 1989’s Full Moon Fever.“I’m gonna do this song for all the young lovers out there,” Petty proclaimed while introducing another Fever hit, “Free Fallin’?”. Then he and long-time picker Campbell laid some seriously jangly Rickenbacker action on that gently rocking number before Petty grabbed a pair of maracas and Campbell donned a Sunburst Les Paul for Peter Green’s late-’60s riff-rock classic “Oh Well”.One of the best-received songs of Petty’s two-hour performance was “Breakdown”, the slinky hit from the Heartbreakers’ self-titled ’76 debut. The crowd seemed totally up for a taste of his early work, but Petty refused to linger long there. It would have been great to hear ’70s gems like “American Girl”, “Magnolia”, or “Listen to Her Heart”, but it was not to be. He didn’t play any songs from 1978’s stunning You’re Gonna Get It! and only one from his breakthrough album of ’79, Damn the Torpedoes.Instead of giving the people what they wanted, Petty played half a dozen songs in a row that nobody knew, tracks from his upcoming release, Mojo. The new stuff was impressive—especially the cosmic, grooving “First Flash of Freedom” (which incorporated the use of green lasers) and the pulsating, bass-driven “Running Man’s Bible”—but the audience seemed a little cowed by the overdose of alien material. By the time Petty grabbed a black acoustic guitar and started strumming the familiar chords of the poignant “Learning to Fly”, the crowd was itching for something recognizable, and it celebrated the reconnect by singing joyfully along on the chorus. The ever-thankful Petty rewarded their patience with the quirky pop ditty “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and—apparently picking up on the intense psychic vibes I was sending out—the exhilarating “Refugee”.For a little while there, the party was back on—and raging.

I am CONFUSED re: "I Am America" -- "You stuff your pockets while Rome is burning" -- America = Rome, sure I guess, but historical precedent would suggest that once Rome stops burning, the next order of business is to round up a bunch of christians to be publicly executed. which would I guess mean "the tide is turning", but probably not in the direction she's hoping for

'STOP THE MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO' by Trade Martin
We’ve got “Freedom Of Religion”. . . . , I understand . . . . ,But Ground Zero is one location, where a Mosque shouldn’t stand…..!!!
(Chorus)
We’ve got to stop the Mosque at Ground Zero . . . ,From thumin’ its nose at every victim and hero . . . ,Thousands of Americans died in the attack . . . ,It’s a sacred place, and that’s a cold hard fact . . . ,
There’s a painful memory in our minds . . . ,Our hearts keep breakin’ when we envision that tragic time.
God help us retain the honor and trust . . . ,For all the families…., who have suffered so damn much . . . ,
Many Innocent Americans were killed . . . ,If we let them build it, can't you see . . . ,They'll turn 9-11 to a mockery . . . ,

Wow, that Keane and K'Naan song. I wasn't quite prepared for it. If the drum track were the only horrible thing about it the song would be terrible, but there's so, so much more. The mood of the song is just dreadful. The video is deeply unpleasant indeed. The singing, particularly K'Naan's, causes suffering in alarming and distressing ways. As an effort to earn the honor of this thread's title: well done, Keane and K'Naan!

The intro is so fucking appalling but the rest was actually not too unpleasant given that I really hate Autotune, really really hate that Supergrass song, and am not generally mad keen on lyrics about "pretty girls" "in the club"

I will second the appreciation for "Only God Knows Why," maybe it's because you could sort of sense him wanting to get out of his rap-rock bubble and do an old-school "this rock n roll life is pretty tough" type ballad, like he grew up with, and he actually turns in a pretty good one!
