Whoever said this about James Brown's performance on The TAMI Show might be right, I just saw it and might have to agree. Thoughts?

Moka, Sunday, 7 March 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

I won't say this is actually the greatest ever, but the aural climax that starts building around 4:43 represents a moment that can never be replicated - Bootsy's Rubber Band "I'd Rather Be With You" live in Houston 1976:

I'm also a big fan of that Talking Heads live in Rome film posted upthread but given my predilections I'm more partial to the hard funk of "Crosseyed & Painless".

"that's great rod, but isn't he singing over a backing track?"

Killjoy! Just kidding--I didn't want to believe it, but I listened closely and you're absolutely right. Not that I have some high-minded objection against lip-synching--I used to be Rob Pilatus's vocal coach--but a big part of why I love the clip so much is how seemingly spontaneous everything is (kind of how Greil Marcus describes "Every Picture Tells a Story"), and that's now lost.

Sorry, Clemenza, but look at it this way, the Rod vocal is absolutely live and the charming stuff with the lyric sheet attests...that must be pretty rare to hear that song sung live in 1972. I have a tendency to undermine, I know, and am working on it!

there's one other clip of him on youtube where looks to be about 85. it's funny to see him flapping his gums and doing a little hop for old time's sake, but yeah, I wish there was more footage of him from any era. I have a feeling that his studio records, as punchy as they are, don't capture all the excitement of his live sets.
