YOUR REIGN ON THE TOP WAS SHORT LIKE LEPRACHAUNS

khaled zeppelin (The Reverend), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

this is my favorite rap album ever i think

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

first instinct is "kick in the door" but any excuse to listen to this one again is aight w/ me

k3vin k., Monday, 15 March 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

"kick in the door" v. hard to fuck w/ imo

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

i was gonna poll verses but i thought this would get more votes/discussion + there are more than 50 verses total i think

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

maybe this is challops, but I never really dug this album as a whole. too much melodrama.

khaled zeppelin (The Reverend), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

the first verse of "kick in the door" = best verse

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

that's crazy rev

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno, a lot of it just feels really heavy-handed to me

khaled zeppelin (The Reverend), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

the only joints I really bump are the singles, the premo tracks, and the bone thugs joint

khaled zeppelin (The Reverend), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:18 (fifteen years ago)

hypnotize

hacksaw jim suggban (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

maybe this is challops, but I never really dug this album as a whole. too much melodrama.

I hear you - it's extremely self-conscious to my ears, v. I'm-making-this-album but that doesn't bother me - the rapping is just so incredible, really if all the songs were about random subjects the sheer pyrotechnics would be o_0

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

cut your ears off if you don't bump "you're nobody (til somebody kills you)"

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the rapping on this totally renders everything else moot -- the best argument in rap for style over substance

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

i love the sprawl of the album too, it's incredibly cinematic

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

the only one where the self-consciousness gets to me is "i got a story to tell," and it's mainly in the conceit - all the stuff between the brackets is great

I also don't really like "fuck you tonight" but that's me

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

"fuck you tonight" is a bit long, but it's got a great beat & r is great on it -- such a luxurious song

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ but otherwise "Hypnotize" and "Kick In The Door" for me. Woah consensus taste. Probably helps that they're early on in the record so I've heard them more.

ha just bringing this up cuz 'i love the dough' is one of my favorite jams (& my first introduction to the rene & angela interpretation) but also because doesnt this kinda describe whiney's approach to rap in general?

*gets the power* (deej), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

(i love the dough being the opposite of skeletal obv)

*gets the power* (deej), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

"I Love the Dough" is great. glitzy and perfect for driving music.

I mean the skeletal beats are great too but Biggie could rap over most anything and adapt his style.....

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not sure if i agree w/ whiney -- i probably don't

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

when I first got into Biggie I preferred the Eazy Moe Bee beats from the debut and was disappointed with the more 'cinematic' beats on Life After Death but over time I grew to not only accept the production but really I don't think the album would have worked without it. I like having a strong delineation between both albums -- you go to your Ready to die for your "Machine Gun Funks", and you go to your Life After Death for stuff like "What's Beef?"

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

xp i dont at all imo this is one of those 'biggie could do anything' type LPs, the whole awesomeness of it is how truly broad in scope it really is & im def of the belief that puffy's ambitions helped bring out the best in big (& vice versa)

*gets the power* (deej), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

1st & 2nd LPs are perfect complements to each other

the end of Niggas Bleed still makes me LOL every time

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

strikes me that going back decades a lot of rap dudes had metal/noise/experimental sympathies, and dug the brutalism and minimalism of 80s hip hop, and the twisted eerie dischord that snuck into 90s hip hop tracks, surviving today in waka's nutjob kitchensinkery & variously. i'm only really putting it together that whiney reminds me of that tradition of fandom.

zvookster, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

my showing was cut short cuz of fights in the front row, cops came etc

it was really kind of awesome though, everyone was pretty much screaming out all the words to every song. it felt more like a concert

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

that movie sucked a fucking dick

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

yea it was pretty electric at mine too, some kid in the back kept singing the Duran Duran "Notorious" sample before the movie started...and everybody howled at the "quit leaving those plates of mashed potatoes under your bed" scene.

wasn't a great movie, and excluded a lot of Biggie's more negative qualities but like I'm a sucker for rap biopics, and well BIGGIE man.

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

idk I didn't think it sucked but they sanitized his image a lot and could have invested in actors who looked somewhat like the celebrities they were playing....

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:10 (fourteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure that freestyle was always an accepted term for any impromptu non-narrative rap, and it was only when the battle rap scene got herbie-goes-bananas that ppl started talking abt "actual" freestyles

weren't there lots of media stories abt shootings and gunfire etc at early singleton movies? maybe like boyz n the hood rather than higher learning. guilty lol @ those asshole asians tho

zvookster, Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

definitely were shootings at Boyz in the Hood, and I heard reports as a kid of shootings during New Jack City (not Singleton I know, but...)

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

notorious was unbelievably bad given the possibilities - as a movie on its own terms it's a standard piece of shit

i put off seeing it for so long but eventually succumbed to a tv screening

there needs to be a Big L movie

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)

the bigger problem w/ notorious than 'doesnt show his bad side' or w/e was that it was 10000x less interesting as a story of his life than his actual music which was much richer w/ detail & narrative

i think luda did for real freestyles on rap city a lot -- or at the very least he brought raps in his head that didn't end up on a subsequent album/mixtape

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 20 January 2011 07:05 (fourteen years ago)

second verse of long kiss goodnight is one of the best on the album, such a cool flow

UH-I flaming gats, aiming at, these fucking...
Maniacs put my name in raps--"support them"
Games dat
Like they hustle backwards
I smoke backwards, and Duchees
Ya can't touch me
Try to rush me
Slugs go, touchy-touchy
You're bleeding lovely, with you, spirit above me
or beneath me, your whole life you live sneaky
Now you rest eternally, sleepy, you burn when you creep me
Rest where the worms-n-the weak be
My nine flies, baptize, rap guys
With the holy ghost
I put holes in most, you hold your toast shakey
Slip-n-trying to break me
Look what you made me do, brains blue
My team in the Marine blew, six-coupe
Skiid it out, weeded out, clean it out
The block for distance is, given long kisses bitch

flopson, Friday, 9 March 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

this has prob been posted before but this is big spitting verses from long kiss and you're nobody as a "freestyle"

kick in the door
hypnotize
you're nobody (til somebody kills you)
i got a story to tell
notorious thugs
goin back to cali
somebody's gotta die
fuck you tonight
last day
the world is filled...

Does there exist a Puffy-free version of this album? I'm sure someone somewhere with his computer has taken Sean out with his distorted Pac threats and '97 vocal tics.

N****, is you creepin' or speakin'?
He tells me C-Rock just got hit up at the Beacon

I opens up the door, pitiful
"Is he in critical?"
Retaliation for this one won't be minimal
'Cause I'm a criminal

Way before the rap shit
Bust the gat shit
Puff won't even know what happened

If it's done smoothly
Silencers on the Uzi
Stash in the hooptie
My alibi, any cutie
With a booty

That done fucked Big Pop
Head spinnin', reminiscin' bout my man C-Rock

ten months pass...

inspired to listen to this again after seeing that new doc on netflix.

was never the biggest fan of this album when it came out, despite liking various songs on it quite a bit, and while i still think ready to die is just back to back brilliance, i cant imagine him going any other route at this point in the 90s than he did on LAD. i still have some pernickety issues with the 'softening' of his voice compared to what it used to be, and some of the it was written/the firm-ish lyrical preoccupations, but i guess thats just changing with the times. i actually prefer the big pop/R&B songs over the 'real hip hop' on this weirdly - love the dough and fuck you tonight are all time biggie classics.

if i had to make this a single album, it would prob be: hypnotize, kick in the door, fuck you tonight, love the dough, whats beef, mo money mo problems, notorious thugs, another, ten crack commandments, nasty boy, skys the limit.

candyman, Thursday, 11 March 2021 21:17 (four years ago)

would prob be more boring, but the purist in me does wonder if it would have been better to split it between the club conquering crossover stuff and the portentous, borderline gothic, straight-up rap stuff.
