I hear you - it's extremely self-conscious to my ears, v. I'm-making-this-album but that doesn't bother me - the rapping is just so incredible, really if all the songs were about random subjects the sheer pyrotechnics would be o_0

yeah the rapping on this totally renders everything else moot -- the best argument in rap for style over substance

i love the sprawl of the album too, it's incredibly cinematic

the only one where the self-consciousness gets to me is "i got a story to tell," and it's mainly in the conceit - all the stuff between the brackets is great

I also don't really like "fuck you tonight" but that's me

"fuck you tonight" is a bit long, but it's got a great beat & r is great on it -- such a luxurious song

ha just bringing this up cuz 'i love the dough' is one of my favorite jams (& my first introduction to the rene & angela interpretation) but also because doesnt this kinda describe whiney's approach to rap in general?

"I Love the Dough" is great. glitzy and perfect for driving music.

I mean the skeletal beats are great too but Biggie could rap over most anything and adapt his style.....

i'm not sure if i agree w/ whiney -- i probably don't

when I first got into Biggie I preferred the Eazy Moe Bee beats from the debut and was disappointed with the more 'cinematic' beats on Life After Death but over time I grew to not only accept the production but really I don't think the album would have worked without it. I like having a strong delineation between both albums -- you go to your Ready to die for your "Machine Gun Funks", and you go to your Life After Death for stuff like "What's Beef?"

xp i dont at all imo this is one of those 'biggie could do anything' type LPs, the whole awesomeness of it is how truly broad in scope it really is & im def of the belief that puffy's ambitions helped bring out the best in big (& vice versa)

1st & 2nd LPs are perfect complements to each other

the end of Niggas Bleed still makes me LOL every time

strikes me that going back decades a lot of rap dudes had metal/noise/experimental sympathies, and dug the brutalism and minimalism of 80s hip hop, and the twisted eerie dischord that snuck into 90s hip hop tracks, surviving today in waka's nutjob kitchensinkery & variously. i'm only really putting it together that whiney reminds me of that tradition of fandom.

yea it was pretty electric at mine too, some kid in the back kept singing the Duran Duran "Notorious" sample before the movie started...and everybody howled at the "quit leaving those plates of mashed potatoes under your bed" scene.

wasn't a great movie, and excluded a lot of Biggie's more negative qualities but like I'm a sucker for rap biopics, and well BIGGIE man.

idk I didn't think it sucked but they sanitized his image a lot and could have invested in actors who looked somewhat like the celebrities they were playing....

i'm pretty sure that freestyle was always an accepted term for any impromptu non-narrative rap, and it was only when the battle rap scene got herbie-goes-bananas that ppl started talking abt "actual" freestyles

weren't there lots of media stories abt shootings and gunfire etc at early singleton movies? maybe like boyz n the hood rather than higher learning. guilty lol @ those asshole asians tho

notorious was unbelievably bad given the possibilities - as a movie on its own terms it's a standard piece of shit

inspired to listen to this again after seeing that new doc on netflix.

was never the biggest fan of this album when it came out, despite liking various songs on it quite a bit, and while i still think ready to die is just back to back brilliance, i cant imagine him going any other route at this point in the 90s than he did on LAD. i still have some pernickety issues with the 'softening' of his voice compared to what it used to be, and some of the it was written/the firm-ish lyrical preoccupations, but i guess thats just changing with the times. i actually prefer the big pop/R&B songs over the 'real hip hop' on this weirdly - love the dough and fuck you tonight are all time biggie classics.

if i had to make this a single album, it would prob be: hypnotize, kick in the door, fuck you tonight, love the dough, whats beef, mo money mo problems, notorious thugs, another, ten crack commandments, nasty boy, skys the limit.

would prob be more boring, but the purist in me does wonder if it would have been better to split it between the club conquering crossover stuff and the portentous, borderline gothic, straight-up rap stuff.
