1st in a series of SST polls. Will probably do 1984,85,86,87,88 as separate polls and see if there's any demand for anything after.

Vote for your fave.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

first four years cd is cheating isn't it. it didn't come out back then did it?

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno, but if I didn't include it some fuckwit would complain they couldn't vote for it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna vote for this:

http://home.fnal.gov/~apana/images/jealous.again.jpeg

just cuz i know all the nerd faves will win anyway.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

but if it didnt come out that year then people shouldn't vote for it because skot says so!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

According to Discogs, First Four Years came out on vinyl in 1983.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

019 is... Meat Puppets II?

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, came out in 1984 (yes, I did check, as I am the kind of prick that complains about things missing from polls)

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

Man, when you get to the latter 80s poll Painted Willie is gonna sweep that shit.

Chatbot LeFonque (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

Machine. I'm not a machine.
Won't work. MACHINE

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

"According to Discogs, First Four Years came out on vinyl in 1983."

oh wow that's cool then i'll vote for that. can't beat that with a friggin' stick.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

Voting for nerd fav Damaged.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

010 Stains Stains
011 Würm I'm Dead

what are these dudes like? i think Joe Carducci repped for them in Enter Naomi. as bands, at least, anyway. not necessarily for those albums.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah nerd faves would be damaged, meat puppets, husker du, and anything by minutemen.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I've Heard It Before is my bad day jam.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Going with the first and best Meat Puppets album (really their second EP, lengthwise, but whatever)over Damaged. Wish I still had Wurm though.

Wasn't Black Flag's "Louie Louie" 45 1981? (Or all these all 12"s? Wasn't sure about "TV Party.")

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

The Stains album is good stuff. Kick-ass punk rock.

Dunno about Wurm.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

I really only need Nervous Breakdown.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

Louie Louie was on Posh Boy.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, that makes sense -- my copy is SST, but a later pressing I guess.

xp Actually Metal Circus and What Makes A Man Start Fires might be in the running too. (Have never heard most or maybe any of those early Black Flag EPs in uncompiled form, or First Four Years for that matter, and Everything Went Black was kinda spotty iirc.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

(Uh, actually, scratch that -- I used to own First Four Years, even put it and not Everything Went into my metal book -- thought it was the other way around. But I don't anymore, for some reason.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

Damaged just barely over First Four Years.

circa1916, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

The Wurm thing is just a single. Have only ever heard 'Time Has Come Today' off the b-side, which is just kind of so-so. This was Chuck Dukowski's band before Black Flag and (ahem) SWA.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

Looking forward to the Zoogz Rift vs SWA face-off in the next poll btw.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

I never owned First Four Years. I think I'll have to side with Scott over "Jealous Again" for its danceability.

bamcquern, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

The Wurm EP is sort of metally, slowish hardcore. Not Flipper slow. Big guitars, like a punk dude playing through Dave Chandler's rig, but not as great as that sounds.

Their album is one of the better hardcore kids playing metal albums, along with YDI's "Black Dust." It's probably a little more hard rock-ish, actually, YDI were still pretty evil. But it's good!

DISASTÜR ZÜN RHINE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

In fact the EP is kinda goofy and a bit shit. But I still like the album.

DISASTÜR ZÜN RHINE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

The Punch Line over Damaged and The First Four Years, but just barely. Another SST shame that Kill From the Heart hasn't been reissued. Thank you to eMusic for Paganicons/Pagan Icons.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

"According to Discogs, First Four Years came out on vinyl in 1983."

Oh, yeah, voted for this.

DISASTÜR ZÜN RHINE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Oh okay... the Wurm I used to own and like was the album, not the EP, which I've never heard. (Was the lineup the same on both?)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know! I've only got MP3s of the album, I haven't seen a copy in years.

that stains album rules. but i'm gonna have to say Damaged.

ade or nabisco - i get em confused (stevie), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

that dicks record is aces too. and of course the minutemen. but while i'm a hardcore husker stan, i never rated metal circus.

will be zen arcade versus meat puppets ii deathmatch in the next poll.

ade or nabisco - i get em confused (stevie), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

Goddamn this was a great label, huh? Had to go with Damaged.

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

I used to have the Posh Boy 7" of "louie louie", it fell down the back of the sofa and when I tried to retrieve it, it got snapped in half. Not a happy day.

My vote in the poll...$35 and a six pack to my name.....

dead flower :( (Pashmina), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

Damaged no contest

Get the Flaps Out (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Probably the only poll without a runaway minutemen victory

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

haha, yeah, even I would probably go with 021 here, and I threatened to ban people who didn't vote for Double Nickels in the 80s poll

Religious Embolism (WmC), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

Unique poll, intermingling albums and singles and EPs and compilations...The Punch Line for me, thanks. (Only non-nerd releases I know are the Dicks and S. Trust.)

Half lies and gorilla dust (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't seem much point in leaving out compilations n stuff since it was a label release poll. Does seem like a comp will win this poll though. between damaged and metal circus for 2nd place I reckon.
http://thatswhenireachformyrevolver.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/metal-circus1.jpg has got my vote.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Was the first husker du i bought, Tower had it in glasgow for £8 on import sometime in 1992. The next week I went back into Glasgow and bought all the Husker Du i could find in Missing Records.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

I thought I was going to cast the only vote for Metal Circus--glad it's not so. The first two Black Flag records were pretty great too.

clemenza, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

There's quite a few Husker Du fans on ILM but they're well outnumbered by minutemen fans. Black Flag dont seem to ever win any polls on ILM so it's kinda funny that they will walk this one just cuz its a comp!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'm about to have a nervous breakdown, my head really hurts! If I can't find a way outta here, I'm gonna go berserk cause... I'm crazy and I'm hurt... BAH DAH DAH DAH... head on my shoulders, it's going BERSERRKKKK

lukevalentine, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

so yeah, I voted for Nervous Breakdown. a perfect five minute panic attack

lukevalentine, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

cool thread idea -- i think the results will be more interesting than my old SST poll: your favorite run of SST releases by one band

some dude, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

voting for What Makes A Man Star Fires btw

some dude, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)

xpost. Much more interesting because we will finally be allowed to vote on the genius of Zoogz Rift (when the next poll comes down the pike)!

dlp9001, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

Metal Circus for me.

Dan S, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

Paganicons is a great album, though maybe it feels fresher now because I didn't overplay it then. "I am Right"

Michael Train, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 04:50 (fifteen years ago)

016 Minutemen Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat

cus i'm a nerd

Fellini.Kuti, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 05:25 (fifteen years ago)

Damn, seeing that Metal Circus cover makes me wanna change my vote!

Suggested poll: Best hardrocking non-metal "Metal" album (Metal Circus, Metal Box, Metal Machine Music, Metallic KO, etc.)

Half lies and gorilla dust (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 06:40 (fifteen years ago)

another Damaged nerd (Meat Puppets S/T runner up)

the mighty the mighty BOHANNON (m coleman), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 09:36 (fifteen years ago)

SST 004 for me. My favourite album ever, not just on SST.

But I love loads of the records on this list - in fact I have everything on here, but the standouts are PaganIcons, the Everything Went Black comp, Metal Circus, the Stains (which was deleted mere months after release, a real shame), the first Meat Puppets and the Subhumans CDN.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yes!

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:32 (fifteen years ago)

Re: Everything Went Black, I'm one of those people who heard EWB before Damaged, so when I eventually got to hear the latter I was SO disappointed at the sloppiness of songs like 'Damaged II', which are like razor-sharp attacks in their earlier versions.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:34 (fifteen years ago)

there's a lot more menace and rancour in the Damaged-era "sloppiness" i'd argue

aw beat de holy jasus.. (stevie), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

'Menace' definitely didn't come to mind when I heard Damaged. 'Laziness' maybe...

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

Love the first three Husker albums, but I feel like they were still finding their voice lyrics-wise, where Black Flag and Minutemen were already on some other-level classic.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think there's really much chat on Black Flag on ILM, not compared to the Minutemen at least. And I never really understood why they aren't that loved on ILM. Is it because of Rollins hate?

its great

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

i hate to be the challop in the mustard pot, but is it just me or are there at least 500 hardcore records better than damaged? it really does feel like one of those ten-hardcore-records-you-should-own-even-if-you-don't-listen-to-hardcore kinda things. don't get me wrong, i like it okay, but pre-damaged flag is like god in heaven to me in comparison. plus, rollins really is one of the worst punk singers on earth. which seems funny, cuz you would think that would be a plus! but there is bad and there is bad bad. he looked great though. guess that counts for something.

scott seward, Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

scott seward, Thursday, 18 March 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

i do like damaged but i kinda agree w/you scott...it was a bit of let down to me, especially compared to "group sex" by the circle jerks which i heard around the same time for the first time as well

snorgfaced germans (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 18 March 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

"but is it just me or are there at least 500 hardcore records better than damaged?"

There isn't even one Black Flag record better than Damaged, so no.

I don't like Rollins generally, but this was his one shining moment of greatness (minus Damaged I).

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

for me Damaged is all about Ginns deranged guitar playing - half the time it sounds like he's having a fight with thing.

aztec gamera (zappi), Thursday, 18 March 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ this exactly. it's the best album for rollins, too, but the first time i heard damaged i totally fell in love with the guitar.

I have to admit that as much as I love Black Flag, the various studio releases aren't particularly indispensable. They were just so amazing and ferocious live (holy crap, the five piece version with Dez and Rollins!) that the records are just kinda frustrating to listen to.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 19 March 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

'My War' mustn't be soon after this...unfortunately I think it's considered the runt of the 1984 Husker/Minutemen/Puppets litter, which is a shame - it's a fucked up record as it is, but if they had a proper bassist and a second guitarist/Dez on there, wow. Would have been amazing, easily Flag's best.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

How many you got?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

Off the top of my head, maybe 10 or more out of a published 15 or so (according to the cat numbers on the catalogues themselves). I used them to compile the SST discography I put up on my own site for shits and giggles a few years ago, and which now appears to be all over the interweb.

One day I'll scan and post 'em somewhere. I don't have any of the early ones, though - I think the earliest one I have is from '89? The latest is from '98 - I wrote to SST and Greg (or whoever) sent me one in an SST-logoed envelope. I'm such a geek.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

i'd vote zen arcade over double nickels in a heartbeat, fwiw

ian, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

i would too.

scott seward, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

imo

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

damaged or what makes a man should win

but I'm throwing my vote away on paganicons, that record is so annoying

I love it

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Always had time for early Meat Puppets so I'm going to vote for that to get it off the ground
They were so fucking weird. Or was it the drugs? Or the desert?

Metal Circus or Damaged.

Imagine the latter fart chamber engineered/produced? Home come Metal Circus sounded so 'clean' in comparison? They were both 'Spotified'

That Stains album had some deranged Ginnified guitar.

The Minutemen weren't punk rock enough for me *ducks*

Fer Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

That Stains album had some deranged Ginnified guitar.

tbh i always thought the guitar on their album sounded like it influenced ginn, rather than the other way around.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

Well well well. I really thought Damaged was gonna get the vote here.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

Shame no one voted for the Subhumans or the Stains - they both deserve to be heard a lot more.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

can somebody fill me in on 'metal circus'? i feel like a dork for having not looked deeper into their catalogue after getting 'zen arcade'

facepalm death (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

107 votes is a really good turnout for an ILM poll.

Religious Embolism (WmC), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:08 (fifteen years ago)

wow at the turnout. I thought the first four years would walk it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

wonder if the next one will get a big turn out

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

The only way to find out is to start it.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I had hoped there would be discussion of the results here

Favourite SST Release of... 1984

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

009 Meat Puppets Meat Puppets 1

Honestly shocked, given the turnout, that I'm the only person to vote for this. Have always thought it was their best record.

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

Always had time for early Meat Puppets so I'm going to vote for that to get it off the ground

Though wait a minute; seems they should have had two votes, at least...

xhuxk, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

MacDara, were the "superstore catalogs" just the xerox fliers for merch they'd put in record sleeves? If you're interested, I have some older ones I can scan and email to you. (One from 86 in my copy of SST 060; one from 85 in SST 039; and one from 84 in SST 027.)

FWIW, those catalogs show that The First Four Years was available by 84, but only on cassette. For $6.50!

dad a, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

The ones I have are properly printed, one sheet folded up small, listing the full available catalogue and merch from all the labels - text only. I imagine they started doing them once they opened the actual superstore on Sunset Boulevard (I'm told that place was tiny, like Rough Trade tiny).

The earliest I have from '89 is more like a flier, with images of some of the records out that year. I'd love to see even earlier ones! I could put them up in a Flickr group or something, if there's no objections.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

I've got SST catalogues that are like 8 pages long and magazine-size with a picture of every release in it. Think the newest one is 1989-ish, it's got shite like the Treacherous Jaywalkers. I'm sure I've got multiple copies, I'll have a root around in my records for you.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

That would be even better! Much appreciated, thank you!

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

i had a feeling Husker Du would take this -- they always seem to do way better than conventional wisdom would indicate in ilx polls. Zen Arcade might even give Double Nickels competition.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

xps No problem, I think I've got an SST bumper sticker you can have too if the glue hasn't gone to shit.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of surprising results. I like early Husker's stuff, but pre-1984 they are definitely the third best SST act.

Check out this SST Catalog blurb:

STAINS: Stains. Another classic LP recorded in 1981 and released in 1983. This is the first speed metal ever and it's never been equaled. Tracks include Gang Related Death, Sick And Crazy and nine others. SST 010 (45 RPM EP $6.50)

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah metal circus is my least fave husker thing from that era. i don't even own it anymore. and i pretty much love everything else. up until they sucked.

scott seward, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

'Real World' is still Grade A Husker product imo, but yeah, not mad keen on the rest. Think I voted for What Makes a Man Start Fires?.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

'Real World' and 'It's Not Funny Anymore' are very good tracks, but it's 'Diane' that rates among Husker Du's greatest songs imo, and is largely the reason I voted for "Metal Circus"

Whats with all the littering? (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

xpost Paranoid Time is perfect. I still give The Punch Line the edge over the others--all three members writing, and firing on all cylinders, as on Double Nickels. Husker benefit from Black Flag vote-splitting, and First Four Years is No. 2 if you count votes for the singles it contains.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Paranoid Time-- too perfect to vote for? I dunno what happened there.

The Minutemen were evolving so quickly at the time - to Joy and then The Punch Line is such a leap forward - that Paranoid Time kinda gets lost in the wake. At least that's how I see it.

shakey youre so wrong

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 25 March 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

i got no problems w/ Metal Circus, but i'm really kinda blown away that it got that many votes. had a feeling Damaged and First Four Years would split the vote and something else might sneak into #1, just not by that crazy of a margin.

circa1916, Thursday, 25 March 2010 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

guess i should take into account all of the Black Flag singles that further spread votes around.

circa1916, Thursday, 25 March 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

black flag split vote was always gonna happen.
