It's a German site called "Die schlimmsten Bandfotos aller Zeiten" but the language of ill-advised music promotion is international.

http://www.immerrocknroll.de/bandfoto6.html is the link

"Most disturbing."

Curt, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This is INDEED a disturbing universe.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't they just call it the Website of Bug-Eyed German Musicians?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ on a REALLY BIG bike.....

There's a band on there called Sandwich. SANDWICH? I mean, presumably one of the band members said "Hey, guys! Let's call the band Sandwich!" And I can only assume that his colleagues, rather than say "No, that is truly the most toweringly shit band name we've ever heard, you fool", actually concurred.

It's a sick world.

This looks like something out of the Tenacious D cd cover.

Some of the comments are pretty cute, too: "The Sennheiser House Band -- No facial hair? No audition!!"

briania, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

...although the idea of a Guru Guru all-day lolly is REALLY disturbing.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

They aren't all German, there's some wonderful Irish bands from the 70's in there.

Its rumoured that one of them, Big Tom & The Mainliners, would get a punk audience when playing in the US as people thought the name was a smack reference even though they paly country. Though I don't believe that.

Winkelmann, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Chris - did you pick this up from the Isi list?

Where I was made fun of when i posted it.

Winkelmann, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

this band really are shit - check inside the gatefold, too. quite amusing...

michael, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny, I'm on Isi and somehow missed it. I found it via Kung Fu Grippe and Sharpeworld

"Frisurenwunder" == german for Velvet Underarms.
Hey, when will Pooh's greatest hits be out on SACD?

Holy shietze! Dig Todd Rundgrens band! Check out the feeble Ozzy impersonations.

no matter how you slice it, sandwich is great name for a band.

xxxxp from Simon Napier-Bell's book 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me':

The lead singer had protruding teeth and a high warbly voice. He was generally known around the music business as the singing goat and one TV producer went to enormous lengths to send the whole thing up. Under instructions from Robert (Stigwood, the group's manager) to produce a beautiful artistic image of the group, the director placed his cameras on the singer in close-up profile, then he shot the rest of the group in miniature, in a pool of light in the distance. They were framed by the singer's open mouth, with the goaty teeth protruding over the small background figure like an awning over the tables of a French street cafe.

are there any indie bands who've forgone the oblig staging of (completely unremarkable singer) foremost, other members aligned due to some coefficient of instrument played/stature/idiosyncracy?

nakhchivan, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it had long been standard to deemphasize the charismatic singer/frontman in the photo as a kind of fuck you to celebrity. Maybe that was more true in my college days though.

Me: Mobb Deep. Because it's cold and rainy.
Guy: Ever heard of the Decembrists?
Me: um, yeah I know who they are. They're from Portland.
Guy: Well, I used to manage them.
Me: Really? Why did they fire you?
Guy: Well, I let them go. This is back when they were a jam band.

*jumps into line of fire* i liked the first couple of albums! maybe even the first three! i don't recall. and moonfaced smugness aside i don't suppose i have anything much against them now, although i haven't listened to them in a few years, or their last couple of albums.

also, if you covered over the two on the right in that there photo, i could imagine it being a photo of a band i'd like.

or there last couple of albums at all, i should say.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

"The Crane Wife" is pretty awesome, to my recollection. Other than that they're pretty dire, although I embarrasedly admit I liked their goofier first couple albums a fair bit during the middle of the last decade.

Saw them at a festival last year while they were touring for their last album, the rock opera. It was like watching a high-school production of "The Black Rider" made into a comedy. There was something very Rushmore about it.

Apropos bit from M Perpetua's tumblr thingy today:

But just in recent memory, one thing that comes to mind is how the Decemberists went from being considered a fairly hip band in the early to mid 00s to being deeply uncool right now. But you know, I think the Decemberists were always deeply uncool and just lucked out in their cultural moment, things just went back to a natural balance and they have the modest, unapologetically dorky cult audience they deserve, a la They Might Be Giants. I think something the Decemberists and Arrested Development have in common is that their music and their fans exemplify a stereotype no one wants to be associated with — effete, wimpy, affected, unsexy. Overly “public radio,” you know? The music is weighed down by cultural baggage.

I still think Picaresque is a great album. It bothers me, though, that they made a whole EP about the Táin, without even bothering to find out how to pronounce the title. Also, in Táin stakes, they're no Horslips. But I digress.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

all music is weighted with cultural baggage. I could care less about their fans or their stereotype - the songwriting (especially the lyrics) is just atrocious.

Rotherhithe Crayfish formed in Nethulah, OR in 2005 when frontman Darlin Oberhausen (2nd right) met xylophonist Tré Klimpfner at a half-way house for recovering khat addicts. Their debut album 'Toad/Toad/Nematode' will be available for download exclusively from GlaxoSmithKline in April. Oberhausen relates tales of backwoods chicanery, incest and Pentecostal psychosis in his patented 'choady' drawl while Klimpfner devotes two songs to his cyclothymic goat, Lavinia.

Sirius.B brings to you the finest Absurdist Gypsy Folk Funk Punk that the world has to offer. Their "impressively irreverent, combustible, three-ring circus of sound" (as described by the Mountain Xpress) is formed using an ancient recipe of gypsy melodies, Andean folk instrumentation, and Uzbekistani dance rhythms blended with a solid base created from some elements of American rock.

knives: they fly @ u face!

big ed girlie (Pillbox), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

it's a brilliant turn of phrase, but I dunno, it seems like a lot of work to shout,"omg running at u with knives!" while you're running, especially if you tend to get out of breath easily. I'd suggest simply grunting "omgrrrrargh"and letting your victims figure out what you're saying based on context cues, such as the running and the knives.

In the physical world, it would be manifested by me actually running at them with knives without announcement, rather than yelling it and giving the game away.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

you've really thought out this "murdering Sirius B" thing, haven't you? ;)

on reflection, the girl on the right is the least punchable because (1) the red AIDS awareness ribbon (if that's what it is) on her hat shows that she has at least a passing concern for a greater cause than figuring out how to clean the spit out her melodica (2) her smile isn't goofy/ironic; and (3) she's set slightly apart from the rest of the group, opening up the possibility that she was photoshopped into the frame to meet the band's "one sane-looking person who looks like they don't belong" quota.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

girl on the right gets it bc she plays melodica. I don't need any more reason than that.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

and attention-getting hand gesture.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

"least punchable" really just means "punchable, but slightly less punchable than her extremely punchable friends", so by all means punch away.

I realise that with some of them, the writer is laughing at a different thing/in a different way to what the intention of the artist was, but with others it is pretty clear that the band are meant to be mocking themselves in exactly the same manner that the writer is laughing.

Much of The Crüxshadows' music is based on Greek and Egyptian mythology. Their work includes symbolic references to a number of mythical figures,[49] and many of their lyrics deal with the concept of God.[49] According to the band's singer Rogue, the inspiration for much of The Crüxshadows' material came from a five tiered dream.[50] The primary albums together form a series unofficially called the Angel Cycle.[51] This cycle uses myth, legend, and spiritual elements to address more personal issues that are characterized by their universal significance.[52][53] The lyrics operate as re-invented parables in many cases, and Rogue has openly stated that he intends Cruxshadows to impact people's lives individually through music.[50]

Rogue's spider-like hairstyle may be the most identifiable feature of his appearance, though he is also known for his unique performing style, his impassioned vocals, and the tight and personable relationship he has with his fans.[6][7][8] His stage persona is charismatic and dramatic, which often includes significant audience interaction and mobility allowed by his headset microphone.

It is pretty awkward posing for band shots, so I guess they're trying to highlight the artificiality of the situation by posing extra-awkwardly? Still looks silly, though.

emil.y, Saturday, 31 August 2013 02:15 (eleven years ago)

i think you're right: they are trying to seem savvy, letting the viewer know that they too are aware of how contrived press photos are. i think it backfires though. like, by making a point out of their ability to "see through" the convention of natural-looking posed photos they end up seeming juvenile, because the fact of posed photos being contrived is almost redundant, and no one "really" takes press photos at "face value."

Treeship, Saturday, 31 August 2013 04:34 (eleven years ago)

The pose is more artificial than that, though - the flattening against the wall, the shoulders pushed up and back. Wonder if it also has to do with that twee video thing of people arranged on flat surfaces as if they were Illustrator vector elements or paper dolls. This came up just a second ago on another thread but I already can't remember what it was.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 31 August 2013 05:51 (eleven years ago)

it also looks like they are part of a lineup of crime suspects. or maybe like they are about to face a firing squad. so it could be a whimsical play on the subject of imprisonment by people who (considering these are mostly indie bands) have never really been at risk for going to jail.

emil.y, Saturday, 28 December 2013 12:40 (eleven years ago)

Saw that Charles Shaar Murray recently reposted this advice from Classic Blues magazine on FB:

It seems obvious but... try to look like a band. Lots of bands make that 'five random blokes at a bus stop' photo mistake. You don't have to wear matching outfits just try to find a way of getting the chemistry between you all through the camera lens. One of the greatest bands in that visual sense is The Rolling Stones. Take a look at their 60s shots in particular. There's rarely a bad shot; they look like a band; and they worked with photographers who knew how to use locations well. There's a lot to aspire to there.

Get a proper photographer to do the shoot; not just a mate who owns a camera. Ask to see their work in advance. Pay them.

'Roy Orbison' looks like a Teddy Boy funeral director.

OMG!

Lo, snoball.

Is that Sean Penn as Dylan?

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 29 August 2021 13:57 (three years ago)

Sean Penn is exactly who I thought of when I first saw that photo!

dude on far right pointing looks the most out of place, which is just as inexplicable as the photo itself.

gotta hand it to ice t though. he really genuinely loves attention.

I don't even understand that picture at all.

ALSO why is there always some weird guy with "eccentric" glasses that have transition lenses? What the fuck

Devo posing with Body Count at Riot Fest, iirc

Ah, thanks. I could place Devo obviously b/c of the hats but didn't recognize Body Count because I don't think I've ever seen pics of them? Other than Ice-T

My transition lenses question still stands tho. What's with that.

I dunno, doctor probably told him he should wear transition lenses and still wants to be "eccentric" or "kooky" is my guess.

I’m sorry but Devo always look like morons

calstars, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:10 (three years ago)

It’s a great photo and Devo fucking rule but they do look so worrisomely old.

Like I knew Mark had COVID but they all look like they're 80.

As opposed to 70?

Starmer: "Let the children boogie, let all the children boogie." (Tom D.), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 20:30 (three years ago)

Ha yes, but many 70 year olds don't look as old as they do.

Mothersbaugh is my dad's age, and I guess he looks comparable based on that photo. I don't think he or the other two older guys in the band look particularly elderly, but age obv affects folks differently.

To be fair, one of his many activities is designing eyewear.

I absolutely love the Devo/Body Count photo and I don't understand the inclusion of it in this thread.

Didn't anyone tell the pixies that past a certain age, you're supposed to use your band photos to ooze wisdom and sobriety?
