Liam Gallagher Is The Greatest Frontman In Rock History

So say the readers of Q Magazine, anyway. Having never made it through a whole Oasis song, I'm in no position to judge. Any thoughts?

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

entire british posting contingent to thread

LiveJournal (acoleuthic), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:21 (fifteen years ago)

Well I'm British but I wouldn't agree with this at all. Doesn't he just stand still when he's singing? That's no kind of behaviour for a frontman.

anagram, Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

Neither does LG nowadays. Anyway, when Peter Kay is calling someone a "knobhead"... ah blah blah blah blah etc etc

The only way this "greatest frontman" vote could be even remotely accurate would be if Q readers hadn't listened to any music after 1994 oh wait...

black jeans stained by (snoball), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

I am a britisher over 30, and am drunk sometimes. I have not so much looked at a copy of "Q" for over a decade, possibly 15 years.

Liam Gallagher is not the greatest frontman in Rock History, he is a knob. Oasis are a crock of shit.

The last issue I read was the 100th edition, which co-incidentally I unearthed during some clearing out today. I have no reason to believe that this month's Q contains any significantly different material.

Usain Bolt Cola (Cattle Grind), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:50 (fifteen years ago)

I bought it for a little while when it first started, I don't recall it ever being "thinking man's" in any way whatsoever, it was more like patrick bateman's music magazine.

dead flower :( (Pashmina), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

Q magazine, that is. I used to have the first five issues, which are apparently worth shitloads of money (TO L4YM0RZ) but the roof leaked, and they got all waterlogged.

LiveJournal (acoleuthic), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yes - although how a band can continue after splitting with the songwriter who wrote all of their hits?

black jeans stained by (snoball), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

I witnessed Oasis's Unplugged set that Noel famous sang in place of Liam. While the music still sounded like owlshit, I barely noticed a difference in the quality of vocals. In fact I thought Noel was better.

This apparently=best frontman evar.

not_goodwin, Friday, 26 March 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Immediately after the Earth solidified, Immanuel and God created the various forms of mineral, plant and animal life. Then shortly thereafter they created the first physical bodies for human beings on Earth, which means this happened approximately 5 billion years ago.

LiveJournal (acoleuthic), Friday, 26 March 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

not_goodwin, Friday, 26 March 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, I had the phrasing wrong. The official title bestowed on LG is "Greatest Frontman Of All Time." Don't know if that cuts anyone out who was previously in the running (Bing Crosby, maybe? Frank Sinatra fronted a band at one point before going solo...), but there you go.

My candidate for Greatest (UK-Based) Frontman Of All Time is probably Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. The guy is a fucking showman.

Reference to Q readers not listening to anything post-1994, surely it's the other way around? Whatever his dubious qualities he's the obvious ''rock and roll'' choice esp. amongst the UK contingent. Who else, Chris martin? This is kinda the anti-Mojo poll result.

Anyway this is the same myopic bullshit as when Radiohead won the 1998 Greatest Album Ever poll with their 1997 album.

But y'know, Q and all that. Sorry, Q

Master of Treacle, Friday, 26 March 2010 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

Not getting this at all. He's boring to watch, surely a frontman should deport himself in an exciting "rock and roll" manner like, I dunno, Roger Daltrey or someone.

Agreed, but according to this poll Q readers' knowledge of frontmen goes back as far as Ian Brown or something.

Master of Treacle, Friday, 26 March 2010 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

They've obviously forgotten Ian Brown...

“I’m not too mad about not speaking to Noel. Especially because of the fact he has dumped the Labour Party for them Conservative b*****ds, that’s serious, that’s blood. Liam would never do that, never.”

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 28 July 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

“I don’t blame him for cheating on Patsy Kensit, Pasty Hens**t, she was awful,” Tommy said. “She is awful, she whistles when she talks. But I think Nicole’s pretty genuine and I love her sister as well.”

Mark G, Sunday, 28 July 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

Tommy, who lives in the modest house in Burnage, Manchester, where Liam grew up, was standing in his back garden with blood dripping from his head and back when we first visited him.

A big rock had fallen on him as he was mending a fence. We took him to A&E for treatment but he shrugged off his injury to head for the pub.

Always bemused by the amount of tears over oasis on ilm. Something something the fact of their popularity was also something something ilm ppl hate them. To act as if the popularity then becomes a reason to react against them is absurd.

The reaction to a q list, a fucking q list mind, upthread is ridiculous. A fucking q list!

Heard some shitty old plodding c-list Britpop song on the radio - slightly baffled how I hadn't heard it at the time, but it was really sub-Oasis pish, frontman desperately trying to sound like Liam in his heyday but somehow even more whiney, lyrics excruciating, actually made me slightly pine for the awful cheese of Be Here Now.

Anyway I don't need to tell you what it was.

Liam utterly crucifying 'Rock'n'Roll Star' on the BBC Red Button right now... he sounds fine on his latest LP vocally, but live it's clear he can't sing this anymore.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:08 (eight years ago)

He was always variable..

Mark G, Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:11 (eight years ago)

He's been putting the title track from 'Be Here Now' into his set. 'Rockin' Chair' too, so he's clearly willing to play songs that Noel won't go anywhere these days.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 21:05 (eight years ago)

Does Noel sing songs that Liam used to do? I know he used to (e.g. Cast No Shadow)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 July 2018 01:31 (seven years ago)

I don’t see the point of an Oasis come back since I suppose it would only be for a tour or one off gig, not a new album. If people want to hear Oasis songs live they just have to go to a LG gig. What’s the difference if it’s NG playing the basic chords with heavy distorsion in the back (and the rest of the band, no one cares surely...) ?
And for those who want to hear NG’s Oasis sung songs, same thing, they can go to his gigs, whatever his band’s name is atm.
That would the most useless come back ever imo (except for the bros who would make a mountain of pounds of course!)

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 20 July 2018 05:36 (seven years ago)

It’s not I dunno, GnR for instance where it does make a difference to have Axl AND Slash on stage. Or Morrissey AND Marr, etc.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 20 July 2018 10:16 (seven years ago)

noel and liam ARE morrissey and marr to a lot of middle-aged mods and young people inexplicably trapped in 1995, tho

BIG RICHARD ENERGY (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 20 July 2018 10:20 (seven years ago)

I was listening to the Big Star box set last night, and especially the version of Chris Bell's I Am The Cosmos (which I think is a slightly different mix from the version I know from the Rykodisc Bell collection). The singing sounds like, well, Big Star, but the guitar playing and instrumental passages really reminded me of Oasis. Of course both Bell and the Gallaghers are well known Beatle worshippers, but it brought home to me just how much of a Creation band Oasis actually could be at times - betcha McGee played the Bell song to Noel at some point or other.
