yeah it's great. if you like classic early 90s bay stuff you should check out IMP (Ill Mannered Playaz). Both 'back in the days' and the s/t albums are great.

i never really recognized the distinct memphis sound, and i never really even got into three six mafia that much even though i used to buy every hypnotize minds release i saw in used cd stores. maybe it's because it never had an impact beyond the midwest and the south, so there were never popularized records like houston has records that came out in the 90s and have been sampled and redone and quoted from and interpolated dozens of times in houston and way outside, and the sound was mostly gone by the 2000s. these tapes sound similar to old midwest and south album, kind of... but there are similarities, the creepy nintendo shit and cheap crispness. i'm into it.
i don't even know what this mack 187 is, really. to me it could have been made in 2005 or 2015 because i don't really have any context for it, instrumentals and chants over.... i want someone to listen to it and explain what i'm hearing here.

So this series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TB2enM7afA
led me to search to download that World Renown track (which itself was sampled in something. the "feel the vibe" line. blanking on what sampled it). Only thing I found it on was this Dj Premier compliation: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BN2FCH0/ref=pd_mp3_als_qp_pa
There's 3 volumes of that and they're all really good. Had only heard a few of the cuts before.

1. BDP - South Bronx2. Mantronix - Fresh Is The Word3. Sir Mix-A-Lot - Posse On Broadway ("Loving" may be a little strong for this one. I'm fine with it.)4. Whodini - Five Minutes of Funk5. Rappin' 4 Tay - Playaz Club6. Lootpack - Weededed

Definitely better than mumble rap. That's fast, above 110 bpm? The mix does sound a little off to me. I wonder what the garbage weirdo rates, probably strictly stans for Kanye with the occasional Eminem interlude. I honestly think Kanye is becoming some kind of white nationalist darling.

preemptive apology as i am not spotify savvy, but there was a series of old school hiphop compilation albums from the early 90s called street jams: hiphop from the top and they really gave me an education back in my junior high cassette walkman days.
part onepart twopart threepart four
there was also the slightly more "new school" oriented (i.e. post-run d.m.c.) but equally as great rapmasters series. i had like five of them, but i never knew just how many volumes there were. according to discogs, there were at least nine volumes (!!).

I've been listening to a lot of early hip-hop. (Is the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap still coming out this year?) Anyway, I programmed a brief historical survey - 30 songs from 1979 to 1992 - and I put it in strict chronological order. Within that context, I found a greater appreciation for Run-DMC. It's amazing how many a-holes I run into who are down on Run-DMC, like "why was this so great?" Never believed in that line of thought, but place within their context, it sinks in how radical they may have sounded to many listeners. The production, the beats, the overall sound of "It's Like That" (the original 12" single) is especially stark and minimalist compared to the songs that came before it - those Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa singles were lean in their own ways too, but all the basic musical elements are stripped down even further. Even less movement in melody and even less notes in general. Even compared to earlier Run-DMC recordings like "Here We Go" and "Together Forever" (both live performances), there's a pronounced change in "It's Like That." The single more or less became the blueprint of their debut LP, which came about 6 or 7 months later (it's on there too, albeit in a shorter version), and it's amazing that it became the first hip-hop album to be certified gold - intuitively, I think of bigger selling records (records that are more accessible and more "pop") as being more tuneful and more lush, and yet a lot of the music on that album went in the opposite direction. ("Rock Box" is an exception on that album, and that's basically a blueprint for their next big development.)
― birdistheword, Saturday, 22 August 2020 19:27 (five years ago)
This is a bit later than the stuff you're talking about, but I got way into Raising Hell earlier this year. Absolutely holds up IMO.
― JRN, Saturday, 22 August 2020 19:39 (five years ago)
Yeah, "Raising Hell" is a great album. Their first four LP's (self-titled, King of Rock, Raising Hell, Tougher than Leather) are all really good-to-great. I love hearing them back-to-back because there is a continuous growth from one to the next that I really enjoy hearing in the way it unfolds. (It's frustrating that none of their compilations are in chronological order, because in their case it's not really a perfunctory way of sequencing their music - it actually works in their favor to hear their singles that way.)
― birdistheword, Saturday, 22 August 2020 20:22 (five years ago)
anyone who disputes the classic status of run-dmc in the 80s is on the wrong side of history.
me, i'm still on an organized noize kick.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTYUDZl21-gthis original extended version of "player's ball" is unbelievably good. always been my favorite version and it still somewhat frustrates me that most people still only know it in the unsatisfying reprise on their first album.

so there's a really old black eyed peas b-side called "le rox" that i've been looking for. it pre-dates even their first album. discogs seems to think it's a remix for fallin up but it's 100% not. i used to have that 12" single, but it's been lost to several moves over the years. i liked bep a lot when they first came out for those first two albums and i'm not even joking when i say that's probably their best song. i can't find it anywhere online.

DJ Spinna - More Colors
I posted another Spinna track upthread. Only way I can listen to this album now is on YouTube. There's some other strong tracks on it. Thought the concept on this one was very well executed.

oooh, i love dj spinna!! that's a really good jam.
it might be approaching heresy, but i've always thought his remix for de la soul's "stakes is high" is just as good as the original with the jay dee beat.

i had this original (and superior imo) version of "forth + back" on a mixtape around the same time and those five songs had me convinced that they were the future.

yeah, that's a solid one for any collection i'd say. the main dude in the group (yogi) was one of p diddy's "hitmen" production team and probably had some significant input into some of badboy's 95-97 hits. enough to get his whole crew signed to a rival label. wonder how that went down.

seems like this is kind of forgotten by now because it was an "old" beat by the time it came out and they sort of re-did it again on common's next album. but it still holds up for me. common was one of the only people who could get away with such raps and this was his last hurrah.

i've found some on youtube, but they come and go on there. not everything on them is great, but sometimes they would throw in unreleased stuff or freestyles and to this day those tapes are the only place i remember hearing some of those things.

Skee-Lo — I thought he was good! Very much a cornball, but he was unique. I really liked "Top of the Stairs"; another great riff on Patrice Rushen's "Remind Me" (one of those samples that I don't mind hearing in multiple uses).

About a year ago a local radio station changed format and is now basically Gen-X / older Millenial era hip-hop/soul/funk/r&b. Nothing they play is really obscure in any way but in the past month I've heard "Posse on Broadway", "The Choice Is Yours", "I Wish", "Fantastic Voyage", "Tennessee", "Return of the Mack", "Atomic Dogg", "Country Grammar", "The Way You Move", etc.
Now twice in the last week I've heard this and I can't tell you how excited I am to have it come on while driving my kid to the ortodontist:

i'd like to hear how anyone discovers these things, if it's memories being activated or something coming up on the algorithm... i recall owning a physical copy of piece of mind, which i probably picked up in a thrift store because i bought anything with a cover like that. i would not have ever thought about it again had i not seen it here. the other day, i found a picture of my bedroom that i had uploaded to photobucket in around 2005 that showed a row of cds. i couldn't pick most of them out from their spines.
before about a month ago, i had never heard the cam'ron and mariah original or seen the joseph kahn video taking the "doesn't really matter" near future japan thing to its limits. i'm sure it was somewhere at the bottom of a youtube mariah carey playlist, beside the bone thugs mariah song. and then came the remix with freeway, jim jones, and juelz. i wonder if it does anything for someone that can't plug it into memories of 2003.

presenting this evening's feature: lyfe'n'tyme by the b.u.m.s
how was your 1995? mine was great. i saw the show. coolio was king of the summer, thanks to "gangsta's paradise." there was trouble brewin, but we didn't care because the beat was flames. however, my favorite album of the year was easily lyfe'n'tyme by the b.u.m.s, repping east oakland.
the brothas unda madness:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CC2mVQaI-uM
(the lead single, "elevation (free my mind)" with a sonorously souped up teddy pendergrass loop)
d-wyze and e-vocalist weren't the most impressive emcees, but much like the group home album, they got by on charisma and crack production (but okay, let's be honest - they were definitely better than malachi and lil dap on the mic). they had a decidedly nyc-centric sound at times; probably explains why i was such a big fan. the beats were handled mostly by sway+tech affiliate joe quixxx and remind me a lot of common's resurrection or maybe even gang starr's hard to earn - just that perfect jazzy boombap. jeep beats, i guess, is what they used to call it. kind of a conscious vibe at times, on tunes like "take a look around" or "flex uv a finga" it felt like a real earnest vibe; they genuinely wanted better. they were definitely righteous, too. just check out the spoken word closer "who gives you the right" which opens with the accusatory inquiry: "are you afraid of what can't be bought?" right on.
the album highlight -and one of my favorite songs of the 90s- applies feel good smoked out g-funk vibes to a blackbyrds sample and gives you smokey as the whipped cream. "let the music take your mind" is just pure perfection:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6TIprVmgwU
the album flopped. priority spent a lot of money on it, too. they shot two videos, did a ton of remixes, and even got bay area legend saafir for an incredible b-side appearance. they disappeared. a year later, forgotten and never to be heard from again. i like to think they weren't just talking shit; they took whatever money they could from the label and straight up dipped. whatever the case, the one album they released will forever be a personal classic.
epilogue: ya'll remember mystic? her first appearance is on this album.

another lowkey west coast heavy hitter from 95. this time proper g-funk—
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCtWq5jl0ws
twinz featuring warren g and bo roc — "journey wit me"
warren g was so good in those days on the beats. it's basically like g funk smooth jazz vamps. very wah'd out aquatic sound. he was certainly doing more consistently better stuff than dr dre at the time. he had a hand in several albums and they're all very solid. some questionable sample choices at times, but i really do feel like he's been underrated in hindsight. he never really did "HARD" beats, so i can see why some people were not into it. maybe he should've been working with r+b acts the whole time? anyway, the whole twinz album is great and i don't think it's a coincidence that the best tracks are the mellower ones with r+b hooks. it's been a personal classic to me since it first came out. in the bigger picture, it's probably a solid 3.5 mics.
here's one of the singles and a tie-in, because i know how much ilxors like "free" by deniece williams. you'll either love or hate this one—

the grouch — "over/evaluation" (1998)
growing up the way i did where i did, i figured most music fans of similar preference had a similar path. all across the world, we all knew about the same records and you chose what you chose and all paths would have a similar outline or arc. the theme of that —"everyone will always understand the context of everything i do, physically and emotionally, because their experience exactly and explicitly mirrors my own"— was my basic upbringing. but on my own, i applied it to music fandom with specific value because, well hi i'm posting here.
it's a fundamental flaw in the way i was raised and i've spent my entire life sorting it out. besides the obvious mental health issues it raises, it manifests in the weirdest, most idiosyncratic ways sometimes. in regards to music, it caused me to hear things and understand them as "this is objectively good and emotive music for _______ reasons" and when i encountered people who simply didn't like it and maybe casually passed it off as "yeah whatever" or "not my thing" i took them as actually making vicious insults because they were feeling the same emotive things i felt, but chose to exclude me. almost like damn, "devs made these npcs pricks. this game is gonna be hard af." the implication also being that i was breaching "unauthorized" territory by mentioning things such as "i like independent hiphop."
but i digress. (this will not be the first time you hear this. i apologize.)
that recent pitchfork 90s list made me think about all this stuff for the first time in several years. i was so dysfunctional back then with regards to how i thought about everything around music and i can't help but think my "i like independent hiphop" phase was the genesis of all that. it bred insularity. in one of my favorite songs of the 90s, it's the grouch's entire fucking thesis. and he usually had two or three tracks like this on all of his albums. and those albums were usually 60+ minute affairs, originally released on cassette only, once a year. like his crew living legends you could find the them pretty easily in larger city record shops all up and down the west coast, as long as they did consignment or dealt with one-stop distributors. this track is the closer on his fourth album, fuck the dumb (did i mention anything about insularity in the scene?).
even though outhouse did eventually do vinyl and cds, it was music that was best served by cassette. my car, like most back then, had a cassette player and an am/fm radio and i mean fuck the radio. so the lopey mpc/asr beats and small budget aesthetic were the soundtrack to about 75% of my late high school and early college drive time. i always liked certain songs in that context a lot, but whenever i'd try to put them into a mixtape or (cringe) dj set at the club, instant vibe kill. another thing i internalized and figured i was just wrong about.
but ever since that list, i've had this running thought in my head: i was like the perfect age range for "the 90s pop experience™©" and i had a completely stupid path lol. how did i fuck that up so badly?! for a further video game-esque analogy: i feel like i got so far into an obscure sidequest that i forgot how to get back into the main area for a little while. but goddammit, i figured that sidequest the fuck out. seriously, how did i skip nirvana completely at the time (and even now, i don't like that music) but end up unconditionally loving stuff that they were a clear influence on. something something sound of the era, "music of their youth resonates with dementia patients", etc.
but i digress.
my black and white attitude about music at the time lead me to believe that some things, simply for aesthetic reasons, and even those that i had previously liked, were all bad. "over/evaluation" has many strikes against it. everyone in living legends pretty much did their own beats and wrote their own raps and yeah: it was DIY. the grouch was always my favorite. he had the best beats. like a lot of 90s producer/mcs, his raps were not the most impressive. he was also my favorite in legends because he seemed the most personable. ultimately considering when and where these guys were doing their thing, it all ended up a little self-indulgent. i mean, it's a good "perseverance!" vibe he's conveying in the song, but like any 90s rapper worth anything, he has to mention his genitals within the first verse. and that's probably the most interesting thing he talks about in the entire song. sigh.
so it went for most living legends stuff. they had some larger distribution for a while in the early 2000s and murs (who pretty much made his own name by doing outside collabs) was affiliated with them, so that raised their notoriety for a bit. i tried to revisit whole albums recently and it's mostly pretty boring music. the catalogues are kind of in piecemeal; only one mystik journeymen album is on streaming. they didn't have much to say, were simply proficient at productions, and i get the impression that a lot of them were heavy hallucinogen users or at least 24/7 weed smokers (independent hiphop: difficult mode).
but every once in a while, one of them would capture something quite earnest and remarkable. even this song, with the grouch babbling about his dick and not much else, has a really strong sense to it and i just _like_ the narrator. he's chill. i'm chill. i put it on after a very long drought recently and it was a hair raising moment. this is a really good song —and yeah, the beat is doing a lot of that work— BUT EVEN NOW, go `head and talk about yer dick bro. it's a vibe and i get it! tell me more about doing the dishes lol. idk, it just works here. good summation of indie and self-released music in general: not all great, but worthwhile if you're into it and may occasionally hit on something.
those guys kept going and they're still around. haven't checked them out in the last 20 years. i dunno, i guess i always had the sense back then that i didn't do drugs, i had never been to college, and i didn't know what anything they were talking about was like so i had no business listening to that music in the first place. i thought for sure that there was no way anyone who didn't already like that stuff could take it seriously. it was still an important musical step (+lesson) and i have to think that at least the grouch, much like his east coast counterparts, had impeccably good taste in his samples.
(that's also a donald byrd sample in "over/evaluation" btw)
anyway, thanks for reading if you have. this is probably my "POO" living legends track. i still don't know the main sample, but it has that wonderful time-stretched sp1200 glaze and that's what i'm here for. anyone else ever hear living legends? the folks who introduced them to me were an odd lot; libertarian hiphop types. i also got connected to the sacramento indie hiphop scene of the time through collabs and stuff on legends tapes. there were some weirdoes in that scene.

good track austin, thanks
you might relate to this booming post by tim f on the 77 tracks thread
People on ILM talk a lot about subjectivity, but usually in a high-handed and (TBH) narrowly-conceived way that doesn't really go far enough. It's not merely that people like different things for different reasons. It's also that every interaction we have with music is shaped by every single experience we have ever had that led us to that interaction, that we could have taken a small number of different steps in our life that might lead us to raise up Wet Leg and cast down Dry Cleaning rather than the reverse, and that would still be us, just a marginally different version of us; the terms in which we engage in the act of doing one or the other are really just a roadmap to our current state of being that no one else can precisely follow.Realising this should prompt a certain humility in our taste, not just in the face of all the people who might feel differently, but perhaps more importantly in recognition of all the different versions of ourselves that also might have done so. And the act of critiquing music, increasingly for me at least, is less about asking "what is it in this music that allows me to enjoy it" and more about asking "what is it in this version of me, right now, that allows me to enjoy this music?"

not at all random but I caught the Pharcyde (minus Bootie Brown) yesterday, very joyful, and wow what a jam Runnin' is - those kicks!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwHuEDCM7xs
In Dilla Time, Dan Charnas recounts the story of the attempted subterfuge of Dilla’s first major beat placement. As crafted by the young producer, “Runnin’” feels wholly different from anything else from its era, mainly thanks to its unconventional kick drums, which hit in unexpected places and don’t repeat in a discernible pattern. But Fatlip didn’t think they sounded right. So during the session for the song, when the rest of his Pharcyde cohorts were out of the studio, he moved the kicks to fall in predictable places. When group member Tre returned, he was incensed. He and Fatlip came to blows over it. “All this over a beat?” Dilla thought to himself. But when the dust settled, Tre’s viewpoint won out. “We’re not changing it,” he told Dilla. “That’s your signature.”

Yeah! Surprisingly above average MC and solid production. Love the Chaka interpolation on Don't Nobody.
That article above speculated on some "funded by drug money" lore and digging into the label Fo Life's discog it seems not at all shocking. Their only other full length release, "Stressin" by Bookie is chockfull of Battlecat beats, features Kurupt, E-40, Kool G Rap and Vontel himself. And is mastered by...Bernie Grundman!? lol. unfortunately not streaming but can be heard in full here:

just a random observation about random old rap-why was it that hiphop beats were always getting commandeered for r+b songs? like how was it that these hardcare hiphop heads were having such a delicate ear for samples? i always think of redman's "tonight's da nite" - they even literally pause the record to call him out for the "punk smooth shit" only to have the exact same beat come back on while he swears more freely lol. sure enough, that same isaac hayes sample showed up on a tlc remix a couple years later - and it sounded great!
anyway, always thought it was funny how so much 90s hiphop would go on about its own hardness. but so many of the beats were loops from old slow jams and then would get repurposed and flourish on as r+b hits for the next year or so.
(lol remember when jlo jacked the beatnuts? that was... huh yeah, that happened)
― "another slice of death, please." (Austin), Sunday, 19 November 2023 18:16 (two years ago)
wasn't it the other way around? crate diggers and producers would come across great rnb samples but to some degree couldn't themselves put them to use in that context because of a perceived schism between rap vs. rnb

stopped into the old bucksters just now and you'll never guess what was playing...
anyway—ya'll remember sporty thievz? they were dope! i think "no pigeons" was one of the last true "answer records" to gain any sort of traction. they were one of the groups that i always liked because they were basically picking up on the too $hort/snoop school of not givin a fuck "we don't luv dem hoez" rhyming and jeep beats. i was mostly into backpacker shit at the time, but always checked for them because these dudes could fucking rap circles around most folks. and you knew they were certified because when rawkus did the amadou diallo benfit album (not on streaming, grrrr), they were on it.
besides "no pigeons" i always thought it was funny that the thing they were most known for previously was... basically the same song with a different beat lol—https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdJzbH3nBtcsporty thievz — "cheapskate" (1997)
of course, they got cut short when marlon brando (not to be confused with the hollywood actor) died in a freak car accident. i remember reports at the time saying that he saw the car coming and was only in harm's way to get other people out of there. idk if he "saved someone's life" or whatever, but damn: twenty fucking two. respect.

yeah, these will always be worthwhile imo.
i used to do whole sets on blend tapes like that ― i had an outkast ep produced by havoc, pharcyde produced by dj premier, yvette michele singing over "waterfalls", etc. etc. ofc back then, it was limited to whatever accapellas would show up on singles. i have firm opinions re:the validity of tge fan/dj made blend/remix.

i know next to nothing about mr. bigg. he was from alabama, had a diamond in his eye. "trial time" was a surprise minor sensation of two decades ago now. he sold "poppin my collar" to dj paul. dead almost nine years. i can't say much more. i never heard much apart from "trial time." "traffic king" sounds familiar. i never heard "time served," the celebratory conclusion to "trial time," until earlier tonight. a good use of his voice.

Also coincidentally, I recently listened to a podcast interview with Ski Beatz, where he talked about how crucial Clark Kent was to his early career. Really made it seem like that was the professional connection that made everything possible for him. And Ski is one of my favorite beatmakers ever, so as far as I'm concerned, that alone is a major contribution

Thank you for asking. Andy loves this song. It tells a complete story using only records for the "lyrics and melody." They are scratched in by Norwegian DJ Tommy Tee with perfect flares, matching the ornate craft of the graffiti he is paying respect to. [LONGPOSTING]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztaf9IpaHwco.c. ― “born 2 live” (1994)
been going back to the outer rim of early d.i.t.c. stuff lately and there's a spiritual trilogy i want to talk about. to immediately divert, let me briefly explain the impetus behind this post: youtuber f.d. signifier made quick mention a while back about his “salute to mid-tiers” and he talked about how much he loved busta rhymes in his formative years. of course in hindsight, busta made enjoyable records and was not meant to be very profound, like a lot of mid-tiers. as a schizo-affected mind, i was drawn to a more introspective and reserved mood, so my mid-tier go-to was omar credle. the `trilogy` that i was thinking of consists of the first two albums by organized konfusion and word. . .life, the first album by o.c.
organized was _not_ mid-tier, btw. those first two albums of theirs are as classic as music ―or at least hiphop― gets. they captured a wild moment of post-native tongues euphoria elevating into proper coordination. the first o.c. album finishes the vibe with plenty of soul searching and i have to think of word. . .life as one of the first `adult contempo` hiphop albums. if illmatic was the raw critic’s choice, not really for top 40 airplay, o.c. had a less complex, radio friendlier variation on that vibe. buckwild’s early production is riyl buhloone mindstate’s acid jazz adjacent grooves, or maybe it proposes a more tuneful hard to earn. the album is my favorite of this little sub-scene: a soulful, rainy day hiphop masterpiece. check out this deep cut with his mom on the hook.
by the time jewelz and the equinox came around, the internet and backpack scenes had bloomed, and d.i.t.c. was releasing proper singles. organized konfusion went to the medicine man with their high concept album; a hard-to-follow sound movie that introduced me to apani b fly and still leaves me wondering when interactive albums will become reality*. the beats were fucking sick!
jewelz otoh tried to split the difference: dj premier beats, heavier reliance on d.i.t.c. cohorts, r+b features, and plenty of simple ass rhymes with a ton of charisma. the beats were even better, but o.c. was just too lowkey to really catch on. i like the album still, even if it was kind of a disappointment back then. it wasn’t a blatant sellout, but there was probably no chance of a track like “sabotage” showing up in 97.
looking at o.c.’s streaming profiles these days, he’s kept recording steadily ever since. while skimming that material, i can’t say any of it will change anyone’s mind about o.c., and even as a fan, i lose interest fairly easily. but i have to commend him, as he is one of the few people from that era who has copyright dumped all of his initial material onto platforms. some of it can be a little frustrating because there’s very little info on the provenance, but all those remixes and bonus verses from the original wild pitch “time’s up” 12” are there in one way or another.
and with his old d.i.t.c. crew mate fat joe getting dragged lately on social media for being fake, it's really refreshing to revisit one of the most genuine dudes of the era.
ok+o.c. "fudge pudge" reunion when?
*i mean, how did we skip straight to “VIDEO” games? i have always wanted to play an audio action adventure game. imagine if j-live’s first album was an interactive first person rpg type of game! you’d literally get to experience the birth of hiphop culture, learn about it first hand like an apprentice, and then decide if you want to pursue rapping, dj’ing, or graffiti. like… this is some irl leveling up that i need.[/LONGPOSTING]

these songs are actually hard for me to listen to sometimes
― ok (D-40), Friday, 15 August 2025 18:36 (three months ago)
I think one of the things when people talk about "nostalgia" in music they seldom talk about how much it can be attached to grief and grieving ... it becomes so much more about people being too attached to the past or childhood or buzzfeed posts about ninja turtles or whatever ... an implied 'not living in the present' kind of thing...or thinking the past is better and draining stuff of its charge by just looping it to meaninglessness. that can happen to me w certain rap albums the way the canonization of everything makes you more distant from what you liked about it, at least until you listen to it again.
but when I was young nostalgic rap from young rappers about their even younger selves felt like a very dominant theme ... "back in the day" by ahmad, its the subtext of a lot of songs on biggie's debut, many Scarface songs...theres a lot in here about people dying too young and so on, echoes of what the crack era did, then of course within dance music 'nostalgia' has all these subtexts from the AIDS epidemic. I got real into the fire island pine walk mixes that were going around on mixcloud and in the article in the Times they talk about how for many people certain songs in those mixes were synonymous with a person, for them, that a lot of the subtext of those mixes was about mourning and grief. The early 90s when I was a kid I think was steeped in these kinds of echoes of a real existential darkness but sort of at the margins or slipping through the cracks of popular culture
This wasn't a song I knew at the time but it's such a deeply poignant distillation of this moment ... sometimes the really sad music is too much and other times you need to go to that place
