examples of DISCO-REGGAE

This is sometimes my favourite type of vintage dancing music, but it's not really a genre - more something people have dabbled with throughout the years.

Any good examples?

Susan Cadogan - Shame
Johnny Clarke - None Shall Escape The Judgement
360 Degrees - Money
Abba - Name Of The Game
Belle Epoque - Miss Broadway
Talking Heads - I Get Wild Wild Gravity
Boney M - lots of things. Most obvious is Rivers Of Babylon, but I don't like it much.

Eddy Grant - "Romancing The Stone," "Walking On Sunshine," "Electric Avenue"
Lots of Grace Jones (esp. early '80s)
Linx - first (and maybe only?) album
USA-European Connection - Come Into My Heart"
Stevie Wonder - maybe "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and/or "Master Blaster (Jammin'") (I'd need to doublecheck the disco quotient on these)
Probably some Hot Chocolate songs, too.
some Goombay Dance Band, I think

Also maybe stuff like:

Gibson Brothers "Cuba" (and other tracks on their LPs probably)
Johnny Chingas "Samba"

Though those probably have as much Latin-American in their rhythms as Jamaican. Probably still have at least as much reggae as "Miss Broadway" (which I always thought of as having more a Bo Diddley beat) or "Name Of The Game" (which I never thought of as reggae or disco, really, though that doesn't mean it's not), though.

Also, wouldn't plenty of Soca fit here? Or is the Caribbean influence in that always calypso rather than reggae? (Hard to know where exactly the line is drawn sometimes.)

Thinking lots of British pop-funk stuff from the early '80s (not just Linx, who I mentioned above, but also Junior, the Quick, Imagination, David Grant solo) could fit here as well. (Hot Chocolate obviously a major inspiration for that whole scene.)

village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Stevie, you may be right about Junior and Imagination lacking reggae, though I wouldn't call them "just funk" -- Imagination were more disco I'd say, and Junior obviously had a pop Stevie Wonder thing going on. I definitely remember reggae rhythms on that Linx LP, though, and I'm pretty sure in a couple Quick tracks. Sooner or later I'll put all those LPs out and doublecheck. (Should doublecheck Gibson Bros and Johnny Chingas, too; I may be imagining their Jamaicanisms as well.)

Dog Latin -- Just out of curiosity, if "Name of The Game" counts, how about Ace Of Base? They definitely qualified as Swedish reggae sometimes. Maybe not disco enough though?

Sorry if someone mentioned it (I didn't see it), but the ultimate one for me here is probably Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved." Sick of most of the Marley standards, but this one holds up very well for me. Rhythm track is fantastic. (And though I don't have my BPMs book handy, I'm guessing it's somewhere in the 114-116 range? Maybe even faster... which certainly adds to its disconess.)

Chain Reaction - comprising Bobby Davis, Bruce Ruffin (no relation) and Dave Barker ('Dave' of '...and Ansel Collin')were a strange Philly type soul/ reggae crossover, with great singing - I have two LPs by them, one - Indebted to You - on Gull c 1976 and one a bit later - Chase a Miracle(?). When I got the latter I thought it was a different group of the same name: the first record could have come from Philly, the second unmistakably from JA via NW10...both fine in their own way, though.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Joe Gibbs has some excellent almost entirely disco-based tunes. Bionic Encounter is like a dubbed-out version of "Runaway" by Loleatta Holloway. He also has a version of "I Want Your Love".

Evil Eau (dog latin), Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I was sure I'd posted this before (is there another disco reggae thread?):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1u_h090m-k

The "version" is even better but not on YouTube.

Lidl Monsters (seandalai), Thursday, 28 April 2011 10:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Risco Connection also worth a mention here; is this the version of "It's My House" that jaime mentioned upthread?

Lidl Monsters (seandalai), Thursday, 28 April 2011 10:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Cheers - Not sure about either of these versions as I'm at work. The version of It's My House posted upthread was by Storm IIRC.

The Brentford versh of I Want Your Love is possibly the Joe Gibbs production I mentioned too.

Google album title. First page of results.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 2 May 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Sadly (well not that sadly, but for the purposes of this thread), the "disco" part of the title only refers to where one would hear it, not the music style.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Monday, 2 May 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

probably already said in this thread, but 'discomix' in reggae generally refers to a combination of the original vocal mix plus either the dub mix or the dj version.

Repost from an ID thread for future reference: I made this 40+ song playlist on spotify (it's set to private... although I think you can share it even if it's private?) Inspired by this reggae-disco thing. Some of my favorite are unfortunately not available in there (clout's sunshine baby and steel an skin come to mind) but there's some songs you might enjoy, several which I didn't see mentioned in this thread (will copy the text in a minute), in case you want to take a listen for your own sets/playlists:

Lots of dead youtube embeds itt, but is it really possible no one ever posted Keith Hudson?

Civilisation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIiffl1IQOE

Too Expensive:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1GeeXzMmwE

I suppose it is possible, since despite considering Hudson one of my all-time faves, I'd ignored Too Expensive for years due to its (wildly, infuriatingly wrong!!) rep as a failed crossover--a deranged narrative that you should only take on board if you are literally Richard Branson.

Also, it's maybe not quite disco but "Central Kingston" off From One Extreme to Another is also a massive jam and that album really deserves a legit reissue: the version on streaming sounds like a vinyl rip

rob, Sunday, 5 December 2021 23:51 (two years ago) link

f**k me! those are both ace. 'civilisation' is sooooo good. thanks. i've been on a huge keith hudson tip recently but had skipped over too expensive.

stirmonster, Monday, 6 December 2021 01:01 (two years ago) link

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Monday, 6 December 2021 06:52 (two years ago) link

I should probably take this to a Hudson thread, but both albums are superb imo. If you're expecting polished soul you'll be disappointed, but if you already dig Hudson's shambolic approach, I can't imagine being disappointed.

As annoyed as I am that I bought the critical line on Too Expensive without even listening to it for so long, the lack of a reissue for From One Extreme is a puzzle since Pressure Sounds put out its dub, Nuh Skin Up, ages ago

rob, Monday, 6 December 2021 16:29 (two years ago) link

More reggae-disco than disco-reggae, but I just pulled out "Nightflight to Venus" and I'm def adding "Never Change Lovers in the Middle of the Night" to my playlist:

Yeah that's a classic. I think I put that on my original mix made from suggestions to this thread. I absolutely love it

Atmosfear's Dancing in Outer Space has a couple of moments when it becomes almost reggae - the laser-ska bit between 2:17 and 2:52, and that liquidy dub bit between about 5:25-6:25 which sounds like the dubwise equivalent of paddling a canoe in choppy waters.

I thought I'd posted about it here already, but the Risco Connection comp has been a highlight of my year: https://riscoconnection.bandcamp.com/album/risco-version

shame there's no dub version tbh because the synths are great but the singing is a bit much

That Margino track sounds so much like Yvonne Chaka Chaka's "I'm In Love With a DJ". I assume it's the same producer

agreed, Moka’s Spotify playlist is a complete banger.

Ernest Ranglin’s “Soft Touch” is complete fire.

Great song!

Glad some of you have enjoyed the playlist! I need to do a clean-up and add more… in the meantime I have added some of the great suggestions so far!
