Actually, we really should just start a thread about the "Diva" concept (and whether it's as specifically Gendered in English as in Italian, its relation to Queer Theory, its odd usage as both a term of praise and term of dismissal/insult etc. etc.) but I recognise that this thread is not it.

In its mixed-by-Peter-Rauhoffer form this late classic of the form somehow managed to take the underlying "it's about gay sex" thematic of diva house to new, disconcertingly sordid heights/depths. Tip!

11) Markus Gardeweg - 25 Years
This electro-house obscurity is actually one of the secretly best diva house tunes ever! A falsetto male diva gets all worked up about his man's philandering ways, but the devil's in the detail: turns out their relationship entailed a wasted twenty-five year period WORKING ON THE LAND! No Joke!

12) Beyonce - Ring The Alarm (Freemasons Mix)
The tradition continues! Really I could put any random Freemasons Remix on here (see their brilliant take on Faith Evans' "Mesmerised") but this one is best due to the awesome, commanding intensity of Beyonce's performance, her furious rant slowed down such that it sounds like ominous prophecy. When she sings "She gon' rock them VVS stones if I let you go", she sounds like Stalin pronouncing an immutable law of dialectical materialism.

Please, give generously to this worthy cause: suggest other diva-house classics that can help downtrodden men and women everywhere regain their figure and their self-respect!

I had his album on today. It suffers a bit from being from '94, that new jack swing (?) type production is a bit foreign to my ears on first listen. Good singing though. I'll need to put in a bit of work to appreciate it properly.

Can we switch up this thread a bit and talk / list / debate /reminisce / speculate over male diva house albums?

Not many of these come to mind really but I've been listening to the following and musing over the connections:

1. Carlton - The Call Is Strong - fantastic, the album i've listened to most these past 8 months or so, but more diva house meets proto-trip hop (in the Soul II Soul sense) than a straight diva house album per se.

2. Michael Watford - Michael Watford - Awesome vocals, dude is hella impassioned, and the sound is super smooth and burnished, but it's also very polite and clean in its arrangements? Perhaps a bit too much?

3. Romanthony - Romanworld - love love love this in all its longwinded pretentious glory, but the Lovesexy style single track mastering makes it even more exhausting to listen to than it already would be otherwise, so I don't listen to as much as I should.

What else should I be listening to? Are there Robert Owen albums I absolutely need?

I did get the Jamie Principle album from 1992 or so but it didn't do much for me :-(

Oh yeah and I also have Aaron Carl and Chelonis Jones albums but i'm thinking more actively old school stuff.

Seriously though, Golden Boy is a pretty awesome, and rates very high on the "male diva" meter, even if the music is more Eurodance than house.

Btw Tim, I want to thank you for making me aware of the existence of the Carlton album in the Carlton thread. I'd only heard "Do You Dream" (which I adore) before and didn't know a full album existed, but once you mentioned it I immediately ordered it. It's really quite good, the only problem is that the sound is mastered at a very low level, so I can't play it on my MP3 player even if I turn the volume full.
